On a compatible Fire tablet, turn off Alexa hands-free mode to stop wake-word responses and, in Show Mode, motion detection through the camera. To review or delete stored voice history, use Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or Amazon’s Alexa Privacy Hub. These are separate controls: deleting history does not switch off hands-free Alexa.

Turn off hands-free Alexa

Amazon documents a combined hands-free control for compatible Fire tablets. The most direct route is:

  1. Open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode.
  2. Turn Hands-Free Mode off.

If the menu is unavailable, Amazon also documents shortcuts: outside Show Mode, swipe down to Quick Actions and select the Alexa Hands Free icon; in Show Mode, use the Alexa Microphone/Camera on/off icon. On supported models, pressing and holding Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds is another shortcut. Icon names and shortcut availability can vary by tablet model and software. Amazon’s Fire tablet Alexa FAQ lists these options.

What turning it off does

With hands-free off, the tablet will not respond to the Alexa wake word. In Show Mode, Amazon says the tablet also stops detecting motion in view of its camera until hands-free is turned back on. This documented tablet control combines microphone and camera-related behavior; Amazon’s instructions do not establish a separate camera-only toggle for Fire tablets.

Know when the tablet sends audio

Amazon describes Fire tablet Alexa as using on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. After detection, the tablet streams audio to the cloud for the request, including a fraction of a second of audio from before the wake word. This is different from saying that all ambient speech is continuously sent to the cloud.

Amazon’s “Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet” says: “You’ll always know when Alexa is recording and sending your request to Amazon’s secure cloud because a blue light bar appears on your tablet.” Amazon also says interactions are encrypted in transit; that fact does not mean every downstream privacy concern is resolved.

Review, listen to, or delete Alexa voice history

Use the Alexa app to find stored interactions. Amazon’s documented app paths are:

  • To review Alexa History: open More > Alexa Privacy, then choose Review Alexa History. From there, recordings can be viewed, played, or deleted.
  • To manage how voice recordings are used: open More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data.

You can also use Amazon’s Alexa Privacy Hub to access privacy controls. The Fire tablet help page also documents voice commands to delete the last request or everything said that day; available commands and labels may vary. See Amazon’s Fire tablet Alexa help for the device guidance.

What deleting history does—and does not—remove

Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests may reduce personalization or cause some features to stop working. It may retain other records associated with requests, such as actions taken, products searched for, information shared, and data needed to provide certain functions. Deleting voice history therefore should not be treated as a promise that every record connected with Alexa use has been erased.

Check the settings on your specific tablet

Alexa hands-free is available only on certain Fire tablets, and Amazon says privacy settings can be device-specific. Screen-off behavior may also depend on whether the tablet is connected to power. If a setting or shortcut described here is missing, check the model and its on-device Settings menu rather than assuming the tablet has the same controls as another Fire tablet or an Echo Show.
