To stop sharing your live location with someone in Google Maps, open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select that person, and tap Stop. On a computer, open Google Maps, choose Menu → Location Sharing, and select Stop beside the person. Android also has a device-and-account setting that pauses updates, but pausing is not the same as ending an existing share.
This guide explains exactly what recipients can see, how to review every active share, how to pause or end updates, and how real-time sharing differs from Timeline history, app permissions, and arrival notifications.
What Google Maps location sharing reveals
Location Sharing is an intentional, recipient-by-recipient share. You choose the people who can access it, rather than making your position public to everyone. However, the recipient sees more than a dot on a map.
- Your Google account name and profile photo.
- Your device’s recent location, including updates made while Google apps are not open or actively being used.
- Your battery level and whether the device is charging.
- Arrival or departure events if the recipient creates a notification for a place.
The location shown is the recent device location available to Google. If the phone is offline, has weak positioning, or has location services disabled, the displayed position can become older until a new update is available. A recipient’s access is controlled separately for each person listed in Location sharing.

Who can add arrival and departure alerts
A person who receives your shared location can create an alert for your arrival at, or departure from, a selected place. Google allows up to five arrival or departure notifications per person. When such an alert is added, Google says you receive an email and may also receive a push notification if Maps notifications are enabled. These alerts are an additional notification layer; they do not create a new recipient or change the underlying share.
Understand the four privacy controls
Several Google settings affect location in different ways. Choosing the wrong one can leave an active share in place or fail to remove historical data.

Review everyone who can see your live location
Android, iPhone, and iPad
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Choose Location sharing.
- Review the people listed. Each entry represents a separate sharing relationship.
- Tap a person’s entry to inspect the current share and the available controls.
Use this screen as your primary audit list. A person may remain listed even when an Android pause setting is temporarily preventing fresh updates, because pausing does not remove the share itself.
Computer
- Open Google Maps in a browser.
- Choose Menu (the three horizontal lines).
- Select Location Sharing.
- Select a person to view the relationship or choose Stop beside that person’s entry.
A computer can manage existing Location Sharing controls, but Google says a mobile device is required to initiate real-time sharing. If you need to start a new share and do not see the option on your computer, use the Maps app on a phone or tablet.
Stop sharing with one person
In the Maps app
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Location sharing.
- Select the person whose access should end.
- Tap Stop, then confirm if Maps asks you to do so.
This ends the selected person’s share. It does not stop sharing with anyone else on your list. To remove several people, repeat the process for each entry rather than relying on a general pause switch.

Using Android system settings
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Choose Location services.
- Open Google Location Sharing.
- Select the person.
- Tap Stop.
The Android list is specific to both the device and the signed-in account. If you use more than one Android device or account, check each relevant device-account combination. Ending a share here removes that person rather than merely delaying updates.
Pause location updates on Android without ending shares
Android has a separate switch for a temporary pause:

- Go to Location → Location services → Google Location Sharing.
- Turn off Use Location Sharing.
While the switch is off, Google pauses location updates for the affected device and account. Existing recipient relationships remain configured, so turning the switch back on allows updates to resume. Use this option when you expect to resume sharing later; use the person-specific Stop action when access must end.
This is not a universal account kill switch. It applies to the Android device and account where you changed it, so another Android device-account combination can have a different state. It also does not delete Timeline records or change location permissions granted to other apps.
Manage arrival and departure notifications
Disable notification messages while keeping a share active
If a recipient has created an arrival or departure alert, you can turn off the messages about those alerts without ending the location relationship. Open your Google Account’s Location Sharing settings and disable Allow Location Sharing notifications. The underlying share remains active, but Google no longer sends you the related alert messages through that setting.

End notifications by ending the share
Stopping the underlying share automatically ends its arrival and departure notifications. This is the appropriate choice if the recipient should no longer receive your location at all. Disabling notifications alone does not remove the recipient’s access.
Why you may receive both email and push messages
Google says the sharer receives an email when a recipient adds an arrival or departure notification. A push notification may also appear when Maps notifications are enabled on the device. These are separate delivery channels, so turning off one type of phone notification may not prevent the email.
Timeline is separate from real-time sharing
Timeline is an opt-in history feature that regularly saves precise device locations while enabled, including when Google apps are not being used. Google explicitly describes Timeline and Location Sharing as separate controls: Location Sharing can work while Timeline is off, and turning off Timeline does not end a live share.
Stop saving future Timeline history
Open your Google account activity or Timeline controls and turn off the option that saves location history. The exact account screens can change as Google updates its privacy settings, so follow the labels shown for your account rather than an older screenshot.
Delete existing Timeline data
Use the same activity controls to delete Timeline information that has already been saved. Google provides automatic deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. These intervals govern retained Timeline history; they do not determine how long a live Location Sharing relationship remains active.

Choose the right action for your goal
- If a person must stop seeing your current position, stop the share in Maps.
- If you need a temporary Android pause and expect the relationship to continue, turn off Use Location Sharing.
- If you want to prevent future location history, change the Timeline saving control.
- If old history should be removed, delete it through account activity controls or set automatic deletion.
Check device, app, browser, and account location access
Maps Location Sharing is only one route by which location-related information can be obtained. Google’s privacy guidance says apps and websites may receive device location according to phone settings and app or browser permissions. Some Google services may also estimate location from an IP address. These mechanisms are distinct from selecting a recipient in Maps.
Android permissions
Review the phone’s Location permission page and the individual permissions for apps that you do not want using location. Depending on the Android version, you may be able to choose options such as precise or approximate location and whether access is allowed all the time or only while the app is in use. Changing an app permission does not automatically remove a Maps recipient.
iPhone and iPad permissions
Review Location Services in the device’s privacy settings, then inspect each app’s permission. Disabling Maps’ device access can affect the app’s ability to obtain a fresh position, but it is not a substitute for removing a recipient from the Maps Location sharing list.
Browser and IP-based estimates
Websites can request location through browser permission, while services may make a broad estimate from an IP address. A browser permission change can limit a website’s request without changing Google account sharing relationships. Conversely, stopping a Maps share does not revoke location access previously granted to an unrelated website or app.

- Mobile initiation: Google says a mobile device is required to start real-time Maps sharing. Existing shares can be managed on a computer.
- Age and region: Location Sharing availability can differ by country or region and may be restricted for some ages.
- Supervised accounts: Family or supervised accounts can have controls that remove or limit sharing options.
- Google Workspace: An administrator may restrict Location Sharing for a managed account.
- Android device scope: The system-level Google Location Sharing control applies to the specific Android device and account where it is changed.
If a menu is missing, first confirm that you are signed into the intended Google account, update Maps, and check whether the account is supervised or managed. A missing control can be an eligibility or administrator policy rather than an app malfunction.

Troubleshoot common privacy problems
“I turned off Location Sharing, but someone still appears in the list.”
Check whether you used Android’s Use Location Sharing pause switch. That switch pauses updates but leaves the relationships in place. Reopen the Maps Location sharing list and use Stop for each person who should lose access.
“A recipient sees an old location.”
An old position can remain visible as the most recent available device location when the phone is offline, location services are disabled, or updates are paused. An old dot is not proof that a new position is being transmitted. To end access, stop the person-specific share rather than waiting for the displayed location to age out.

“I stopped sharing but still receive an alert.”
Confirm that the correct person’s entry was stopped and that you are using the intended Google account. Google says stopping the underlying share ends its arrival and departure notifications. If messages continue, inspect whether another recipient created a separate alert or whether the message is from a different account or service.
“I disabled Timeline, but someone can still see me.”
Timeline and real-time Location Sharing are independent. Return to Maps → Location sharing and stop the specific recipient. Then review Timeline separately if your goal also includes preventing historical storage.
“The computer does not let me start sharing.”
Use the Maps app on a mobile device to initiate a new real-time share. Google permits management of Location Sharing on a computer, but initiation requires mobile hardware.
“The option is unavailable on a managed account.”
Age, region, supervision, and Google Workspace administrator policies can limit the feature. If the account is managed, the administrator may need to change the policy; reinstalling Maps will not override an account restriction.

Privacy checklist for a complete review
- Open Maps Location sharing on every phone or tablet you use and identify each listed recipient.
- Stop individual shares that are no longer needed.
- On Android, check Settings → Location → Location services → Google Location Sharing for each device-account combination.
- Decide whether a temporary pause or a permanent stop matches your goal.
- Review whether any recipient has added arrival or departure notifications.
- Disable Allow Location Sharing notifications if you want to keep sharing but no longer receive those alert messages.
- Review Timeline saving and delete or automatically delete history if appropriate.
- Audit app, browser, and device location permissions separately from Maps recipients.
- Check supervised-account or Workspace restrictions when controls are missing.
- Repeat the review after changing phones, switching Google accounts, or re-enabling a paused Android setting.
