Location privacy on a phone has two separate switches: app location permission controls whether an app can read the device’s location, while location sharing controls whether specific people can see it through a service such as Google Location Sharing or Apple Find My. Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Use the steps below to audit both controls. You can limit an app to approximate or temporary access, stop sharing with one person, or disable people-sharing altogether without necessarily disabling every location feature on your phone.
First, separate app access from people-sharing
Start by deciding what you are trying to stop. If a weather, shopping, navigation, social, or fitness app should not read your position, change that app’s permission. If a family member, friend, or contact can see your live position, change the sharing setting in Google Location Sharing or Find My. These are different systems, often with different account and device scopes.
| Control | What it governs | Typical scope | What changing it does not necessarily change |
|---|---|---|---|
| App location permission | Whether one installed app can request device location | One app on one phone | People who already receive your location through a sharing service |
| Android precise-location permission | Whether an allowed app receives precise rather than approximate location | One app, where the option is available | Google’s device-level Location Accuracy setting |
| Google Location Sharing | Whether selected people can see location through supported Google services | A Google account and a particular device; check every signed-in device | Permissions granted to individual apps |
| Find My sharing | Whether selected people can see your location through Apple’s Find My ecosystem | Named people and a chosen sharing duration | Permissions for unrelated apps |
| Device location service | Whether the operating system’s location service is available at all | The whole phone | Sharing records or account settings that may still need to be stopped separately |
For a privacy check, review the app list and the people-sharing list, then consider any whole-device location switch. Google documents app permissions separately from Location Sharing, and Apple documents Find My sharing separately from Location Services (Google’s Android app-permission guide; Google’s Location Sharing guide; Apple’s Find My guide).

Choose the least access that still works
Four questions make the decision clearer:
- Scope: Is access needed by one app, or should a person see you?
- Duration: Should access last only while you use the app, for a temporary sharing period, or indefinitely?
- Precision: Does the task need an exact position, or is an area sufficient?
- Visibility: What information can the recipient see, and in which apps?
A map turn-by-turn session may need location only while the app is open. A local-events app may work with an approximate area. A trusted contact might need a live position for a journey, but not a permanent share. There is no single setting that is right for every app or relationship, so make the choice per app and per recipient.
Android: change location access for one app
Google’s documented route is Settings > Location > App location permissions. Android manufacturers and software versions can rename or rearrange menus; if you cannot find the route, search Settings for Location or App location permissions. Google also documents an app-specific shortcut: touch and hold the app icon, choose App info, open Permissions, then choose Location (Google Android Help).
Use the permission level that matches the task
- Open the app’s Location permission page using either route.
- Review the access choices shown on your phone. Google documents Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or allow when I share, and Don’t allow. The exact choices can vary by Android version, device, and app.
- Select the narrowest option that supports the feature you intend to use. For a feature needed only during active use, choose the while-using option when it is offered.
- If Android shows Use precise location, turn it on only when the app genuinely needs an exact position. Turn it off to provide approximate location instead.
- Return to the app and test the feature. If it fails, reopen this page and select a broader, temporary, or precise option only if the task requires it.
Google describes approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers and precise location as the device’s exact location. That description explains the permission categories; it is not a promise of a fixed accuracy radius in every environment, phone, or app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat each Android choice means
| Choice | Result | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow all the time | The app can access location in the background when Android permits it. | Features that must operate without the app open, if you trust the app and need that behavior. | Broadest ongoing app access. |
| Allow only while using the app | Access is available during active use. | Navigation, nearby search, or check-in features you use interactively. | Background functions may stop when the app is closed. |
| Ask every time or allow when I share | Android asks for permission at the relevant moment, where supported. | Occasional use when you want a prompt before access. | More interruptions; wording and availability vary. |
| Don’t allow | The app cannot use the phone’s location through that permission. | Apps that do not need location or that you do not trust with it. | Location-dependent features will not work. |
Do not confuse precise permission with Location Accuracy
Android’s Use precise location switch is an app-level permission. Google’s Location Accuracy is a separate, device-level setting that helps Android determine location using available signals. Changing Location Accuracy does not replace reviewing each app’s permission, and changing one app’s precise setting does not configure Location Accuracy for the whole phone. See Google’s explanation of the device setting at How Location Accuracy improves location.

Android: manage sharing with people
Google Location Sharing is a people-sharing feature available through supported Google apps and services, including Maps, Messages, Find Hub, Family Link, and Personal Safety. Google says it is off by default until you begin sharing through a supported app or service. Its controls are tied to both your Google account and a particular device, so check every phone or tablet on which that account is signed in (Google’s Location Sharing settings).
Start or review a share
- Open a supported Google app or service that offers Location Sharing.
- Open its account, profile, or location-sharing controls. Menu names differ between apps and Android versions.
- Review the people listed and the sharing details shown for each one. If you are starting a share, select the intended recipient and use the duration or sharing choices the service presents.
- Confirm that you are sharing from the device you intend to use. A second signed-in device may have its own sharing state.
If the named menu is not visible, Google’s device help recommends opening Settings and searching for location services. Do not assume that changing an app’s permission has stopped a person from seeing you; return to the Location Sharing controls and review the recipient list.
What a recipient may see
Google says a recipient may see your name, profile picture, real-time location, and battery status. Depending on the service and circumstances, shared information can also include recent locations, and Maps may show travel mode or travel-related information. The exact presentation depends on the Google service in use, the account, and the device.
Stop sharing with one person
- Open the same Google Location Sharing controls where the share was created.
- Select the individual recipient.
- Choose the control to stop or remove sharing for that person, then confirm if prompted.
- Repeat the check on other devices signed in to the same account.
This stops the people-sharing relationship; it does not automatically revoke location permission from apps on the phone. If an app still has access, manage it separately under Settings > Location > App location permissions.

iPhone: review an app’s Location Services access
On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then select an app to review the controls shown for it. Apple’s Find My documentation confirms that Find My sharing depends on Location Services being enabled for Find My (Share your location in Find My on iPhone).
Apple’s available choices and labels can vary with iOS version and the app. Use the controls displayed on your phone rather than assuming that every app offers the same options. If an app does not need location, disable its access. If a feature works only during an active session, choose the least persistent option offered. Reopen the app afterward to verify whether the feature still behaves as expected.
Know what disabling Location Services does
Changing one app’s permission affects that app. Turning off the phone’s Location Services affects the operating-system location service more broadly and can prevent location-dependent features from working. Find My sharing is a separate question: Apple’s sharing workflow requires Location Services for Find My, but stopping a person-to-person share still needs to be done in Find My.

Share your location
- Open Find My and select Me.
- Turn on Share My Location.
- Open People, add the person you want to share with, and choose the sharing duration offered by Find My.
- Tell the recipient which contact method you used if Find My asks you to choose one, then verify that the person appears in your People list.
Stop sharing with one person
- In Find My > People, select that person.
- Choose Stop Sharing My Location.
- Confirm the change if iPhone asks you to.
Stop sharing with everyone through Find My
- Open Find My > Me.
- Turn off Share My Location.
Apple says Find My sharing can be visible in Find My, Messages, and Maps in the situations described in its safety guide (Find My and location sharing). Do not assume that ending a share is invisible: someone who previously had access may notice that sharing stopped, and people using earlier operating systems may receive a Messages notification.
Device-wide location, app permissions, and sharing: choose the right action
| Your goal | Action to take | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent one Android app from reading location | Settings > Location > App location permissions, then change that app’s access. | The app no longer has the selected permission; people-sharing lists are unchanged. |
| Give an Android app an area instead of an exact position | Leave the app allowed, but turn off Use precise location when available. | The app still performs its feature with approximate access. |
| Stop a Google account from sharing with one person | Open Google Location Sharing controls and stop sharing for that recipient. | Check each device signed in to the account. |
| Prevent an iPhone app from using location | Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select the app, and change the displayed control. | The app’s location-dependent features may stop; Find My sharing is a separate setting. |
| End one iPhone Find My share | Find My > People > select the person > Stop Sharing My Location. | The person is removed from the active share; they may notice the change. |
| Hide your iPhone location from everyone through Find My | Find My > Me > turn off Share My Location. | Review Messages and Maps situations as well as Find My. |
| Disable location services across a phone | Use the device-wide Location or Location Services control. | Review app permissions and people-sharing services separately; one switch does not erase every account-level share. |
Troubleshoot the common failures
The menu is different from the instructions
Android manufacturers and software versions change labels and menu placement. Search Settings for Location, App location permissions, or location services. On iPhone, use the exact path Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. A managed, supervised, or older device may expose different controls.
An app still asks for location
Reopen its permission page and check whether you selected an option that prompts at use time. If you chose Don’t allow and the app continues to display a request, deny it again or remove the app if you do not need it. An app’s request does not mean that a person can see your location; inspect people-sharing settings separately.
A person can still see your location
Stopping an app permission is not the same as ending a share. In Google Location Sharing, stop the individual recipient and check every signed-in device. In Find My, remove the person under People or turn off Share My Location under Me. Also consider whether the person is seeing a recent location or another sharing service rather than the setting you just changed.

The precise-location switch is missing
Android shows Use precise location only where the device, Android version, and app support that distinction. If it is absent, you can still choose among the permission levels displayed, but do not assume that changing Google’s Location Accuracy setting creates an app-level precise toggle.
Sharing appears to return after you stopped it
Check the account and device scope. Google Location Sharing is device- and account-specific, so another signed-in phone may have its own state. On iPhone, verify both the Find My People list and the Me setting. Also check whether a separate app or service has its own location-sharing feature.
A practical privacy-maintenance routine
- Audit app access: Review Android App location permissions or iPhone Location Services and remove access that no longer serves a purpose.
- Reduce precision: Where Android offers it, use approximate location for apps that do not need an exact position.
- Audit people: Review Google Location Sharing recipients and Find My People, including shares created for a trip or temporary need.
- Check every device: Look at phones and tablets signed in to the same Google account, and confirm which iPhone is sharing through Find My.
- Recheck after updates: Menu labels and available choices can change with Android or iOS updates, so use the current Settings search when a route no longer matches.
- Explain the change: If you end a share with someone, remember that Apple says the person may notice; plan your communication and safety needs accordingly.
The safest workflow is therefore two audits: first decide which apps may access the phone’s location, then inspect every person-to-person sharing service. Treat precise access, background access, temporary sharing, and ongoing sharing as separate decisions rather than one universal location switch.
