Gemini’s Maps answers can use several different kinds of location information, and no single switch controls all of them. A request such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” may be answered from an approximate area, a Home or Work address saved to your Google Account, precise device location granted to an app, or precise data supplied by Google Maps. To manage privacy, review each layer separately: device and app permissions, Google Account addresses, sharing between Google services, and Gemini Apps Activity.

The four location layers you need to understand

Google describes Gemini’s location behavior as a combination of product permissions and account data. These controls affect different data flows, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

Layer What Gemini may use What changing it affects
General area An area inferred from your IP address or your saved Home or Work addresses Approximate place-based answers and directions that can use those addresses
Device or browser permission Precise location supplied by the operating system or browser after permission is granted Whether the relevant app or browser can provide precise device location
Google service sharing Precise location supplied by another Google service, such as Maps Whether a connected Google service can fulfill a Gemini request with its own location data
Gemini Apps Activity Stored prompts, responses and related activity; Google says location is coarsened before storage What remains in your Gemini activity history, not whether a request can receive location in the first place

Google explicitly says Gemini may receive precise location from Google Maps even when the precise-location setting in the Google app is turned off. Treat the Google app setting as one control, not a universal “no precise location” switch.

What Gemini can know about your location

Approximate area from network or account information

Without precise device permission, Gemini can still infer a general area from your IP address. It may also use Home and Work addresses saved in your Google Account. That is enough for questions that refer to a known address or broad area, but it is not the same as a live GPS reading.

Precise location from a device or browser

If you grant location permission to the relevant app or browser, Gemini can process precise device location for a request. Google says that precise location processed with your permission from a device or browser is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity. That statement concerns the precise location signal itself; it does not remove the text of your conversation from history.

Precise location supplied by Maps or another Google service

Gemini Apps may share precise location with another Google service, such as Maps, to fulfill a request. Google says the receiving service handles that data under the Google Privacy Policy. The same help material warns that Maps may provide precise location to Gemini even when the precise-location setting in the Google app is off.

Location words in your chat

A place name that you type, such as a neighborhood, address or city, is part of your prompt. A place name or address included in Gemini’s response can also remain in the conversation. Google’s statement about not storing permission-based precise device location in Gemini Apps Activity does not mean that every location detail appearing as chat text disappears.

How Gemini’s Maps connection works

Google says Gemini can use public information from Maps to discover places and provide details such as addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings and opening hours. It can also provide directions by travel mode and may use your saved Home or Work address or device location when permission allows.

Requirements and availability

  • You must be signed in to a Google Account.
  • Keep Activity must be turned on for the places-and-directions feature.
  • The feature is not available in Gemini Live chats or Gemini in Google Messages, according to Google’s current help information.
  • Additional Maps-in-Gemini capabilities are being released gradually. Eligibility can depend on factors such as being at least 18, using a personal Google Account and asking about a place in English.

Availability and eligibility can change as Google rolls out the feature. If a Maps answer is missing, check the account and activity requirements before assuming that a permission setting is broken.

What the Maps connection cannot do

  • Save Location History through the Gemini Maps connection.
  • Use saved places other than Home or Work.
  • Provide live traffic updates.
  • Add a review to a place.

Gemini can describe public Maps information and give directions, but those limits mean it is not a replacement for every Maps function.

How to review location permissions safely

Exact labels and menu locations vary by operating system, device manufacturer and software version. Use the following as a decision process rather than a universal path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Check the Gemini or Google app permission

  1. Open your device’s system settings and find the app-permission section.
  2. Locate Gemini if it is listed as its own app. On Android, Google says the Gemini mobile app uses the permissions selected for the Google app, which hosts assistant capabilities used by Gemini and Google Assistant.
  3. Review the Location permission and choose the least-privileged option that still supports the feature you want, such as denying location, allowing it only while the app is in use, or allowing precise location where your device offers that separate control.
  4. Save the change, then retry a place query and note whether Gemini asks for permission or falls back to an approximate result.

On Android, changing only a Gemini-specific entry may not be enough because the Google app’s permission selection is the relevant control for Gemini mobile. The wording and available choices differ by Android release.

2. Check Google Maps separately

  1. Open the same system permission area and locate Google Maps.
  2. Review whether Maps can access location and whether precise location is enabled when your device offers that distinction.
  3. Decide whether Maps should retain access for navigation and other Maps functions, even if you do not want Gemini requests to use a live position.
  4. After changing the setting, test a neutral query rather than disclosing a sensitive address in the prompt.

Because Google says another service such as Maps may provide precise location to Gemini, reviewing Maps is essential. Turning off a precise-location setting in the Google app alone is not a complete check.

3. Review device-wide location controls

Your operating system may have a device-wide location switch or a separate precise-location control. If location is disabled at the device level, apps generally cannot obtain a live device position, but account addresses, IP-based area estimates and location text that you type into a chat are separate matters.

4. Review browser permission when using Gemini on the web

Browsers maintain their own site permissions. If you use Gemini in a browser, inspect that site’s location permission in the browser’s privacy or site-settings controls. Google’s published help does not provide one universal path for every browser, so follow the labels shown by your browser and operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage Home and Work addresses

Home and Work are account-level addresses, not temporary device permissions. Google says Gemini can use them for directions even when device location permission is unavailable.

  1. Open your Google Account settings and find the personal-information or address section.
  2. Review the saved Home and Work entries for accuracy and necessity.
  3. Remove or update an address that you no longer want associated with the account.
  4. Remember that deleting an address does not delete old prompts or responses that already contain that address.

If you want directions without sharing a live position, an intentionally broad starting point can be less revealing than a full residential address. However, any address you enter in a prompt becomes chat content subject to your activity settings.

Understand Gemini Apps Activity and chat storage

What Apps Activity controls

Gemini Apps Activity is the account-level history for Gemini use. Google says you can review and delete this activity at any time. It is separate from the permission dialog that controls whether an app may obtain location.

What turning off a permission does not do

Revoking location permission prevents the relevant app or device from supplying that permission-based location going forward, subject to the separate Maps and account-data paths described above. It does not erase existing Gemini conversations. If a previous prompt named a city, address or venue, that text can remain until you delete the applicable activity or chat.

How to audit and delete activity

  1. Open your Google Account controls and go to Gemini Apps Activity.
  2. Review entries for prompts and responses that reveal places, addresses, routines or travel plans.
  3. Delete individual entries or use the available deletion controls for a broader period.
  4. Recheck the activity setting after deletion so you know whether future Gemini use will continue to be retained.

Google’s help says users can review and delete activity at any time. The exact buttons and retention choices can change, so read the confirmation text shown in your account.

How Google describes location coarsening

Google says location it processes is coarsened before storage. Its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes a general area that is “larger than 3 sq kilometers” and includes “at least 1000 users”; outside cities, the area is typically larger. These are Google’s published thresholds in its own description, not an independent audit or measurement of every request.

The distinction matters:

  • Precise location processed with permission from a device or browser is described as not being stored in Gemini Apps Activity.
  • Location that is stored is described as being converted to a broader area before storage.
  • Prompt and response text can still contain precise place information that you supplied or that Gemini generated.
  • Another Google service receiving precise location uses it under the Google Privacy Policy, according to Google’s explanation.

Coarsening reduces the precision of stored location metadata; it does not make a detailed address in a chat invisible.

Practical privacy settings by goal

Your goal Controls to review Trade-off
Get nearby places while limiting live location Deny or restrict device location; review Maps permission; avoid entering a full address Results may be broader or require you to provide a starting area
Use “near me” directions with the best location accuracy Allow the needed device or Maps permission; keep the account signed in and Keep Activity on More precise location can be processed by the services involved
Keep Home and Work directions available without GPS Maintain only the necessary account addresses; restrict device location separately Those addresses remain sensitive account data and can be used for directions
Minimize retained Gemini history Review and delete Gemini Apps Activity; avoid placing identifying addresses in prompts Features requiring Keep Activity may not work when activity is off

Use precise prompts without oversharing

A prompt determines how much location detail enters the conversation. Compare the information disclosed in these examples:

  • Broad: “Find a park with a playground in central Manchester.”
  • More revealing: “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.”
  • Most explicit: “Find a park within 10 minutes of 14 Example Street, and tell me whether it is open.”

The second example asks Gemini to use your current position; Google lists a similar example in its help. The third places a full address directly into chat text. If the request is sensitive, provide the smallest area that can answer the question and omit names, apartment numbers and other identifying details.

Troubleshoot a missing or inaccurate Maps answer

Gemini says it cannot use your location

  • Confirm that you are signed in.
  • Check that Keep Activity is on, because Google lists it as a requirement for the places-and-directions feature.
  • Review the Google app permission on Android, not only a separate Gemini entry.
  • Review Google Maps permission and the device-wide location control.
  • Try the request outside Gemini Live and outside Gemini in Google Messages, where the feature is unavailable.

The result is for the wrong area

  • Check whether Gemini is using an IP-derived general area rather than precise location.
  • Verify Home and Work addresses in your Google Account.
  • State a city or neighborhood explicitly instead of saying only “near me.”
  • Check for stale device or Maps permissions after an operating-system update.

You expected traffic, a saved place or a review action

The Maps connection does not support live traffic updates, saved places other than Home or Work, saving Location History or adding reviews. Open Maps directly for functions that Gemini’s connection does not provide.

You revoked permission but still see an old address

Revoking permission does not remove existing chat text. Review Gemini Apps Activity and delete the relevant conversation or activity entry. Also inspect prompts you sent manually, because those can contain location details independent of device permission.

A repeatable privacy check before using “near me”

  1. Decide whether an approximate city or saved Home/Work address is sufficient.
  2. Check the Google app and Google Maps location permissions that apply on your device.
  3. Confirm whether you are using a Gemini surface that supports Maps, rather than Live or Google Messages.
  4. Check the Gemini Apps Activity setting and understand whether the feature requires Keep Activity on.
  5. Phrase the request with the least location detail that still produces a useful answer.
  6. Afterward, inspect and delete the chat or activity entry if it contains sensitive place information.

What Google’s statements do—and do not—establish

Google’s official help pages describe the intended controls and handling for Gemini Apps and Maps. They do not constitute an independent audit of actual data flows, and interface steps can change across platforms and software versions. The safest interpretation is therefore layered: permissions govern some collection paths, account addresses create another path, Maps can supply precise data independently of the Google app’s precise-location setting, and activity controls govern retained Gemini history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off precise location in the Google app stop Gemini from receiving precise location?

No. Google says Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps, even when the Google app’s precise-location setting is off. Review Maps and device permissions separately.

Will deleting Gemini Apps Activity remove every location detail?

It removes the activity entries you delete, but location details may also exist in other Google services or account data, such as Maps or saved Home and Work addresses. A place name typed in a chat is part of that chat and must be deleted through the applicable activity or conversation controls.

Can Gemini save my Location History through Maps?

No. Google’s current Maps-in-Gemini help says the connection cannot save Location History.
