To manage iOS signing reliably, treat the certificate and provisioning profile as separate assets: the certificate identifies who signs the app, while the profile authorizes that identity for a particular app and workflow. For many projects, enable Xcode automatic signing; use manual profiles when the team needs tighter control over certificates, registered devices, or distribution.

Understand what you are managing

A signing setup connects a certificate and its private key to an app’s identifier and capabilities, then uses a provisioning profile appropriate to the way the app will be run or distributed. A certificate is not a profile, and replacing one does not automatically replace the other.

Apple distinguishes development certificates, which belong to individuals, from distribution certificates, which belong to the team. Xcode 11 and later supports unified development and distribution certificates across Apple platforms. The Apple certificates overview describes certificate purposes and account roles.

Choose automatic or manual signing

Approach Best fit Control and trade-off
Automatic signing Common Xcode development and distribution workflows Xcode creates or updates many required signing assets. It is less hands-on, but behavior can depend on matching profiles already cached locally.
Manual signing Teams that need explicit control of profiles, certificates, or registered-device lists You select and maintain the signing assets yourself, which offers control but requires more careful coordination when certificates, capabilities, or devices change.

For a typical Xcode project, open the project, select the app target, choose Signing & Capabilities, select the correct team, and enable Automatically manage signing. Apple’s Xcode distribution guidance covers automatic and manual signing. If Xcode cannot create or update the required distribution certificate, check that the account has the necessary role: Apple limits distribution-certificate creation to the Account Holder or an Admin.

Select a provisioning profile for the distribution route

Profile requirements vary by destination. Before creating or replacing one, identify whether the build is for development, registered-device testing, or App Store Connect.

Profile route What it authorizes Key selections
Development Running and testing an app during development An App ID, one or more development certificates, and registered devices. See Apple’s development profile instructions.
Ad Hoc Distributing a build to selected registered devices outside the App Store The App ID, a distribution certificate, and the devices to include. See Apple’s Ad Hoc profile instructions.
App Store Connect Submitting an app for distribution through App Store Connect An explicit App ID and a distribution certificate. Apple states that an App Store Connect profile contains a single distribution certificate. See Apple’s profile instructions.

Create or replace a certificate and profile

  1. Identify the workflow. Decide whether the signing assets are for development, registered-device testing, or App Store Connect; that determines which profile type and certificate are appropriate.
  2. Confirm the team and permissions. Use the intended Apple Developer team. If creating a distribution certificate, make sure the account is the Account Holder or an Admin.
  3. Choose Xcode automation or manual control. For a standard project, use the target’s Signing & Capabilities settings and automatic signing. For manual signing, manage assets through Apple’s developer account and select the profile and certificate for the target workflow.
  4. For manual development signing, create a development profile by choosing the App ID, development certificate, and registered device or devices.
  5. For manual App Store Connect signing, choose an explicit App ID and distribution certificate. For Ad Hoc distribution, select the App ID, distribution certificate, and registered devices.
  6. After changing signing inputs, regenerate any profile that is expired or invalid, then install or select the updated profile and verify the target’s signing configuration.

Renewal: distinguish certificate expiry from profile validity

There is no single certificate lifetime that should be applied to every current iOS signing workflow. Apple’s current guidance explains certificate roles and profile management, but the cited current pages do not establish a universal validity period for each certificate type. An archived Apple guide described a one-year term for a legacy distribution certificate; that historical period should not be treated as the rule for current certificates. The archived reference is Apple’s archived certificate guide.

A profile can become invalid when it expires, when a relevant certificate is revoked or changed, or when app services or capabilities change. Apple advises regenerating an expired profile or one invalidated by service changes. Use the profile management page to edit, download, or delete profiles; after regeneration, use the new profile in the signing workflow.

Troubleshoot a signing or installation failure

  • Build reports a missing or invalid profile: confirm the profile type matches the destination and that its App ID and capabilities match the app target. Regenerate the profile if it is expired or invalid.
  • A registered-device build will not install: for development or Ad Hoc distribution, check that the device is registered and included in the profile. An App Store Connect profile is not a substitute for a registered-device profile.
  • Signing fails after changing certificates: ensure the selected profile includes the intended certificate, then regenerate and select a profile that matches the updated signing identity.
  • Xcode appears to keep using an old profile: automatic signing may use a locally cached profile if it satisfies the requirements. Check the selected team and target signing settings, then refresh or regenerate the profile as appropriate.
  • You cannot create a distribution certificate: verify that the account role is Account Holder or Admin.

Keep the certificate’s private key available to the authorized signing workflow and restrict access to it as a security measure. A certificate without its corresponding private key cannot serve as the signing identity for a build.
