The practical way to manage interest-rate risk in a bond ETF portfolio is to measure the portfolio’s duration, decide how much rate sensitivity the bond allocation is supposed to carry, and then shape that exposure with maturity selection, ladders or—when the objective justifies it—an explicit hedge. Shorter maturities generally produce smaller price moves when yields change; longer maturities generally produce larger moves.
Duration is only an estimate, not a promised result. Credit spreads, defaults, inflation, liquidity, yield-curve changes, reinvestment rates, fund expenses and the price at which an ETF trades can all change the outcome. The process below is designed to make those choices visible rather than turn the portfolio into a bet on one rate forecast.
What interest-rate risk means for a bond ETF
A bond ETF owns a portfolio of bonds, so its net asset value (NAV) changes as the market reprices those bonds. When market yields rise, existing bonds with lower coupons are usually worth less and the ETF’s price tends to fall. When yields fall, those existing cash flows become more attractive and the price tends to rise. The longer the cash flows are pushed into the future, the more sensitive their present value is to a change in rates.

In the convention used by iShares, duration estimates the percentage change in a bond or fund’s price for a one-percentage-point (100-basis-point) change in interest rates. A duration of five implies an approximate 5% price increase if rates fall 1%, or an approximate 5% decrease if rates rise 1%, before considering other effects.

The word “approximate” matters. The estimate assumes a particular type of rate move and a relatively small change. Actual returns can differ because of convexity, embedded options, changing credit spreads, defaults, fund flows, liquidity, fees and the fact that yields at different maturities may not move together. Duration therefore helps you size an exposure; it does not guarantee a result.
The risk can be material even in a high-quality index fund. An iShares guide published October 7, 2025, reported that the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index had declined 8.8% during the specific period from March 2022 through July 2023. That historical, period-specific number is not a forecast of the next drawdown, but it illustrates why a “bond” label does not mean a stable price.
“Bond investors can reduce duration — or interest rate risk — by selecting bonds or bond ETFs with short-term maturities, and they can increase their interest rate risk by selecting bonds or bond ETFs with longer maturities.”

Measure the portfolio you actually own
Start with current fund fact sheets and holdings, not a fund’s name. For every bond ETF, record the characteristics that determine both rate sensitivity and the risks you may be taking to obtain its yield.
- Effective duration: the fund’s current estimate of price sensitivity, including the treatment of callable or otherwise optional bonds where applicable.
- Maturity profile: the distribution of cash flows across short, intermediate and long maturities, rather than only the fund’s average maturity.
- Credit quality and sector mix: Treasury, agency, investment-grade corporate, high-yield, securitized and other exposures can react differently when rates and spreads move.
- Yield measure: identify whether the quoted figure is a 30-day SEC yield, distribution yield or another measure. A yield is not a total-return promise.
- Expense ratio and liquidity: costs and bid-ask spreads affect the return you receive when you trade or hold the ETF.
- Derivatives and options: swaps, futures and embedded options can make the fund’s behavior differ from a simple maturity-weighted bond list.
- Update date: duration and holdings change as prices, yields and the portfolio change, so note when each figure was measured.
For a first approximation, multiply each ETF’s portfolio weight by its duration and add the results:

Estimated portfolio duration = (weight of ETF A × duration of A) + (weight of ETF B × duration of B) + …
Recommended Free Tools
For example, a hypothetical allocation of 40% to a duration-3 ETF and 60% to a duration-7 ETF has an estimated duration of 5.4 years (0.40 × 3 + 0.60 × 7). That arithmetic is an educational illustration, not a suggested allocation. The portfolio’s realized sensitivity can differ because of curve positioning, derivatives, options and changing holdings.
Use a benchmark that matches the job of the allocation. An iShares guide dated October 7, 2025, described the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index as having approximately six years of duration at the time of that guide. Treat that as a dated reference, not a live statistic. A short-term spending reserve should not automatically be compared with a broad intermediate benchmark simply because both are called bond funds.
As an example of why the date belongs beside every number, the iShares iBonds Dec 2034 Term Treasury ETF page reported 6.40 years of effective duration and a 5.09% 30-day SEC yield on October 7, 2026. Those are that fund’s reported characteristics on that date; they are not a yield promise, a permanent duration, or a recommendation to buy it.
Choose the role of the bond sleeve before choosing its duration
Write down what the bond allocation must do when equities or other risk assets are falling. The answer determines how much interim price movement you can accept and when principal will be needed.
| Primary role | Questions to answer | Duration implication |
|---|---|---|
| Near-term spending | When will withdrawals occur, and must the money be available without selling after a rate shock? | Shorter maturities or a deliberately staggered ladder generally reduce price sensitivity for the cash needed soon. |
| Income generation | Is the priority current distributions, long-run total return, or a combination? | Do not choose duration from yield alone. Longer exposure may raise rate sensitivity, while a high yield can also signal credit or liquidity risk. |
| Equity diversification | Should the bond sleeve have meaningful potential to rise when growth slows, or should it simply dampen volatility? | Longer high-quality duration may provide more rate exposure, but it also creates larger losses when yields rise. |
| Capital preservation at a known date | Is the date fixed, and can the investment be held through that date? | Match maturity dates and cash-flow timing, while recognizing that an ETF’s market price before maturity can move. |
| Broad market exposure | Which benchmark, credit mix and maturity profile are you trying to track? | Keep the portfolio’s duration and key-rate exposures close to the chosen benchmark unless a deliberate deviation is part of the plan. |
Your time horizon and tolerance for an interim loss should be explicit. A portfolio that must fund a payment next year has a different capacity for duration risk than one intended to remain invested for decades. No single duration is suitable for every investor or every account.

Use maturity exposure as the basic control
Changing maturity is usually the clearest way to change rate sensitivity. Compare actual duration, holdings and risk disclosures on the same date; labels such as “short” or “long” are not substitutes for the current figures.
| Approach | Typical rate sensitivity | What it can help with | Tradeoffs to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-duration bond ETF | Usually lower | Reducing price sensitivity and supporting nearer-term cash needs | Potentially lower income in some markets, reinvestment risk and credit risk if the fund is not Treasury-only |
| Intermediate-duration diversified ETF | Moderate relative to short and long options | Broad bond-market exposure and a balance between income and sensitivity | Benchmark mismatch, credit mix, yield-curve movement and spread movement |
| Long-duration Treasury ETF | Higher | Deliberate exposure to long-term yields and possible diversification behavior during growth shocks | Larger price moves when long yields change, plus inflation and liquidity considerations |
| Floating-rate ETF | Often lower for changes in benchmark rates | Coupons that reset periodically as short-term reference rates change | Credit, spread, liquidity, reset-frequency and benchmark-basis risks |
| Defined-maturity ETF ladder | Varies by rung and design | Spreading maturity dates and planning future cash flows | Market price before maturity, reinvestment, fund expenses and credit exposure |
| Rate-hedged bond ETF | Designed to be substantially lower | Retaining selected underlying credit exposure while hedging part of the rate exposure | Swap carry, fees, counterparty and derivatives risk, and imperfect hedge behavior |
Short and intermediate maturities
Moving part of the portfolio toward short maturities generally reduces the effect of a parallel rise in yields. It can make the price path easier to tolerate for money needed soon, but the protection is not free: bonds mature sooner and must be reinvested, potentially at lower yields. A short corporate ETF still carries spread and default risk, so “short” does not mean “risk-free.”
Intermediate funds occupy the middle ground. They can provide more income or diversification than very short funds while avoiding the largest duration swings of long funds. Their behavior depends on which maturities, sectors and credit ratings the index actually contains.
Long maturities
Long-duration Treasury exposure is a deliberate choice to accept larger price changes in exchange for greater sensitivity to long-term yields. It may perform differently from equities during certain economic shocks, but that diversification behavior is not guaranteed. Inflation expectations, fiscal concerns, liquidity and changes in the long end of the yield curve can all overwhelm a simple “rates down, price up” narrative.
Floating-rate exposure
Floating-rate bonds reset coupons periodically, which can reduce sensitivity to some changes in short-term benchmark rates. They do not eliminate risk. The reset may lag the market, the reference rate may not match the rate you care about, and the issuer’s credit spread and liquidity can dominate the return. Examine reset frequency, benchmark basis and credit quality before treating a floating-rate ETF as a cash substitute.
Build a ladder when cash-flow dates matter
A ladder spreads holdings across selected maturity years instead of allowing the entire bond allocation to mature at one time. Each rung can provide interest and a scheduled principal event, giving you planned opportunities to spend or reinvest.

Defined-maturity iBonds ETFs are one implementation described by iShares. They hold diversified bonds with similar maturity dates, pay regular interest and make a final distribution in the named maturity year. Because the funds trade like shares, their NAV and market price can fluctuate before that year.

- Assign rungs. Select maturity years that spread principal events across the dates rather than concentrating everything in one year.
- Check the underlying bonds. Review Treasury, agency, corporate or other credit exposure, duration, yield measure, fees and liquidity for each rung.
- Decide what happens at maturity. Specify whether proceeds will fund spending, buy the next rung or return to a broader allocation.
- Recheck the ladder. A fund can trade away from NAV, holdings and yields can change, and your spending schedule can change.
A stated maturity year does not lock in the price you paid, guarantee a yield or guarantee principal at your purchase price. Selling early exposes you to the market price then available. Even when you hold to the fund’s stated maturity, distributions, fees, portfolio changes and the treatment of any remaining assets affect your realized return.
Use an interest-rate hedge only for a defined objective
A rate-hedged bond ETF generally owns an underlying bond portfolio and uses interest-rate swaps to offset much of its exposure to Treasury or other reference rates. The intended result is to retain some credit-spread exposure while reducing sensitivity to the hedged rate. It is not the same as eliminating risk from the bond portfolio.
The hedge has an economic cost. Swap carry can be favorable or unfavorable as market rates and the swap curve change; fund expenses reduce returns; derivatives introduce documentation, valuation and counterparty considerations; and the hedge ratio can be imperfect. A June 30, 2026 product brief cited hedge-duration figures close to zero for its named examples. Those were dated product figures, not a permanent property of every hedged fund.
Before using one, compare the hedged and unhedged funds’ current net yields, effective durations, credit holdings, expenses, swap disclosures and liquidity. Ask what risk you are intentionally retaining. If the answer is corporate-spread risk, a rate hedge may still lose money when spreads widen or issuers deteriorate. If you do not want that credit risk, hedging the Treasury component alone does not solve the portfolio problem.
Account for risks duration does not capture
- Yield-curve risk: rates at two-year, five-year and 30-year maturities can move by different amounts or in opposite directions. A single duration number can hide that key-rate exposure.
- Convexity and options: callable, putable or mortgage-backed bonds can change duration as yields move, so the next price change may not mirror the first estimate.
- Credit-spread risk: corporate and securitized bonds can fall when investors demand more compensation for credit risk even if Treasury yields decline.
- Default and downgrade risk: an issuer can fail to pay or become less creditworthy, producing losses unrelated to the general level of rates.
- Inflation risk: a fixed nominal coupon may buy less in real terms when inflation rises. A high nominal yield does not automatically preserve purchasing power.
- Liquidity and trading-price risk: an ETF can trade above or below NAV, and wide bid-ask spreads can make a needed sale expensive, especially in stressed markets.
- Reinvestment risk: when bonds mature or coupons are paid, the replacement investment may offer a lower yield. Falling rates can therefore create price gains while reducing future income.
- Fund and implementation risk: expenses, sampling, securities lending, derivatives, index rules and portfolio turnover can make returns differ from a simple bond calculation.
A repeatable monitoring and rebalancing process
- Set a written exposure range. Define the duration or maturity profile that fits the bond sleeve’s role, along with the credit and liquidity limits you will not cross.
- Review on a schedule and after major changes. Update duration, holdings, yields, expenses and market prices from current fact sheets rather than relying on an old snapshot.
- Separate rate moves from spread moves. When a fund falls, check whether Treasury yields, the relevant curve segment, credit spreads or the ETF’s trading price explains the change.
- Rebalance for the plan, not the forecast. If one holding has become a larger or smaller part of the intended exposure, adjust according to your policy and tax or transaction constraints instead of trying to predict the next rate decision.
- Revisit cash-flow dates. A change in spending needs can make a previously reasonable duration inappropriate even if market conditions have not changed.
- Document exceptions. If you intentionally add long duration, floating-rate credit or a swap-based hedge, record the purpose, expected behavior and risks that remain.
Use key-rate or maturity-bucket data when the fund provides it. A portfolio can have the same effective duration as a benchmark while concentrating its exposure in a different part of the curve, producing very different results when the curve steepens or flattens.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Relying on yield as a risk score
A higher yield can compensate you for longer duration, lower credit quality, weaker liquidity or other risks. Correct the mistake by reading the duration, credit mix and yield definition together.
Assuming a bond ETF will return to its purchase price quickly
Prices can remain below your purchase price while the fund continues to pay distributions. Correct the assumption by matching the holding period and cash need to the fund’s duration and maturity exposure.
Treating a maturity year as a guarantee
A defined-maturity ETF can make a final distribution in its named year, but the shares are market-traded beforehand and the purchase price is not guaranteed. Correct this by planning whether you can hold through maturity and by modeling the sale alternative.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Hedging rates while ignoring credit
A swap can reduce Treasury-rate sensitivity while leaving corporate spreads, defaults and liquidity risk intact. Correct the mismatch by checking whether the underlying credit exposure is still appropriate.
Using a stale fact sheet
Duration, yield and holdings move with markets. Correct this by recording the date of every figure and refreshing the analysis before a material allocation change.
Putting the decisions together
A sound bond ETF process is sequential: measure each fund, calculate the portfolio’s approximate duration, identify the bond sleeve’s job, choose maturity exposures that fit the time horizon, use a ladder when scheduled cash flows matter, and add a rate hedge only when its costs and remaining risks are acceptable. Then monitor curve exposure, credit, liquidity, reinvestment and trading-price behavior—not just the headline yield.
This approach does not predict interest rates. It makes the portfolio’s response to different rate paths intentional, measurable and easier to revise when your objectives or the funds’ characteristics change.
