You can manage your own Google Maps reviews, profile identity, visibility settings, and uploaded photos or videos from the Your contributions or Contribute areas. These controls are separate: editing a profile does not make reviews private, restricting profile discovery does not turn a review anonymous, and deleting a Maps upload does not erase copies saved on your devices or in synced storage.

The instructions below cover the documented computer and Android paths. Google can change menu labels between app versions, so use the closest current label if your screen differs. Before changing anything, decide whether you need to edit your own contribution, remove it, change how your profile is presented, limit profile discovery, or report somebody else’s content. Choosing the right control prevents an irreversible deletion or a privacy expectation Google does not support.

Which Google Maps setting do you need?

Google separates reviews, profile settings, identity details, media, and reports. A setting in one group does not automatically change another group. Use this table as a quick decision guide.

Remove a photo or video you uploaded Delete the item from Your contributions Removes the Maps item and its Google Search version Local files and synced copies remain until separately deleted.
Challenge somebody else’s content Report the content Requests Google’s policy review Google, not the reporter, decides whether to remove or reinstate it.

Google’s official review guidance says, “All reviews are public and anyone can find what you add,” and “You’re unable to add an anonymous review.” Read the current Google Maps Help instructions for computers and the Android version if labels in your account differ.

A short decision checklist

  • If the contribution is yours and the information is merely wrong, edit it rather than creating a second review.
  • If you no longer want your own review or upload on Maps, use the delete control for that item.
  • If you want less profile discovery, use the Android restricted-profile setting; do not expect it to hide a review from anyone viewing a listing.
  • If you want a different public name or image, edit the Maps profile. That changes presentation, not contribution history.
  • If another account posted the content, report it. A delete option in your account cannot remove somebody else’s upload.

Prepare before changing a contribution

Sign in to the Google account that actually created the review, photo, or video. People often have multiple accounts on a phone, and Maps will show only the contributions associated with the active account. If an item is missing, tap the account or profile control and check the account address before assuming the contribution was deleted.

For an edit, reread the complete review and decide whether you are changing only a factual detail, the star rating, or the whole description. An edit replaces the existing contribution rather than creating a separate review. If you may need the old wording for your own records, save a copy before submitting the change. For a deletion, make sure you are comfortable with removing the Maps contribution; use editing if you simply need to correct a date, name, or description.

For photos and videos, identify where the original file is stored. Deleting an item from Maps affects the Maps and Search copies, but Google does not use that action as a command to erase your phone gallery, computer folder, Google Photos backup, or Google Drive synchronization. Handle those copies separately only after confirming you still need them.

Edit or delete a Google Maps review

On a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and sign in to the Google account that posted the review.
  2. Select Menu (the three horizontal lines).
  3. Choose Your contributions, then Reviews.
  4. Find the review and open its More menu.
  5. Choose Edit review to change the text, star rating, or other available details, or choose Delete review to remove it.
  6. Confirm the action when Maps asks.

Use the listing’s own review display as a second check after saving. Your contributions is the management view, while the place page is where other visitors encounter the published review. They may not refresh at exactly the same moment.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Maps app with the account that wrote the review.
  2. Tap Contribute. If your app presents contribution actions elsewhere, open your profile from the account or profile control first.
  3. Tap View your profile, then See all reviews.
  4. Tap More beside the review.
  5. Select Edit review or Delete review, make the change, and confirm.

Google documents the Contribute tab and profile access in its Android Contribute help. The exact location of the tab can vary as the app interface changes. Look for the function, not a particular icon position.

What editing changes

An edited review displays an updated post date. That date change is normal and does not mean Maps created a second review. The review remains associated with the same place and profile, and it remains subject to Google’s normal content policies. Changing wording is not a way to bypass moderation. If you alter a review after a business responds, the updated date may make the history look different to readers, so revise it only when the new wording accurately reflects your experience.

Editing can be useful when a business has changed, you misstated a factual detail, your star rating no longer matches the written explanation, or you want to clarify the time period covered. It is not a privacy control. The revised text is still a public Maps contribution.

What deleting a review means

Deleting removes the review you authored from your Maps contribution list and from its normal public display after the change propagates. It does not remove other people’s reviews, photos, or business information. If you are uncertain, edit first; deletion is the wrong choice when you may later need the text or rating.

Why a review may disappear

Google moderates reviews and can remove contributions that violate its policies. Google’s guidance says it does not reinstate reviews removed for policy violations. If your review vanished, check that you are signed in to the account that posted it and consider whether the text, rating, links, incentives, personal information, or other material could have triggered a policy rule before posting again. Reposting substantially identical text may not solve a moderation issue.

Can you make Google Maps reviews private?

No. Google describes Maps reviews as public and does not support anonymous reviews. Anyone who can find the relevant Maps listing may be able to read the review and see the public identity attached to it. A profile restriction changes how people discover your contribution profile; it is not a privacy switch for individual reviews.

That distinction matters when choosing a remedy. Changing your profile picture will not hide an old review. Turning on restricted profile will not convert an existing review into an anonymous entry. Deleting your own review is the direct way to withdraw that review from Maps; reporting is for somebody else’s potentially policy-violating content.

Restrict profile discovery on Android

  1. Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Open Location and privacy.
  4. Turn on the switch that restricts your profile, then follow any confirmation shown.

Google documents this Android control in Control who finds your Google Maps contributions. The setting is about the profile boundary Google describes. Do not tell someone that enabling it hides a review from the public; it only narrows profile-level discoverability as Google defines it.

Desktop availability

The cited restriction instructions are Android-specific. Google’s published material does not establish a matching desktop path, so do not assume a computer setting with the same name exists. If you need the restriction, use the current Maps app on Android and verify the switch is still enabled after an app update. A missing switch on a computer does not necessarily mean your account is misconfigured; the documented control may simply not be offered in that interface.

Change the name, picture, or bio shown on Maps

Your Maps profile is the place to control the identity displayed with your contributions. Google says the profile name, picture, and bio appear on the profile. On Android, Maps also allows a custom Maps name and picture instead of using the corresponding Google Account details.

Android procedure

  1. Open Google Maps and tap Contribute.
  2. Tap View your profile.
  3. Choose Edit profile.
  4. Change the available name, picture, or short bio fields.
  5. Save the changes and reopen the profile to confirm the public presentation.

See Google’s View and edit your Google Maps profile instructions for the current Android labels. A custom Maps identity changes how your profile is presented; it does not convert reviews into anonymous posts, because Google still treats reviews as public contributions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an identity deliberately

  • Use a name and image you are comfortable displaying next to every public contribution associated with that Maps profile.
  • Keep the bio short and avoid contact details or information you would not want copied or indexed.
  • Remember that changing the profile identity does not rewrite the historical text of a review or remove the review itself.
  • Review the profile after saving so you can confirm the selected picture and name are the ones Maps is showing.

If your goal is to remove a past review, do not spend time changing profile fields first. Profile editing changes the label readers see; only the review’s own edit or delete command changes that contribution.

Remove photos and videos you uploaded

Delete an item on a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and sign in to the account that uploaded the media.
  2. Select Menu, then Your contributions.
  3. Open Photos.
  4. Find the photo or video, open its More menu, and choose Delete this photo.
  5. Confirm the deletion.

Google’s media instructions are at Add, remove and share photos or videos in Google Maps. This self-service deletion applies to media added through your own account. You cannot use it to remove another person’s upload.

What the deletion does—and does not do

Google says removing the item from Maps also removes its Google Search version. It does not delete the original file from your phone or computer, a copy backed up to Google Photos, or a copy synchronized to Google Drive. Those are separate storage locations with their own deletion controls. If you need the file for personal records, download or preserve it before deleting the Maps contribution.

Removing the Maps item also does not erase screenshots, downloads, quoted descriptions, or copies other people may already have made. The documented effect is removal from Maps and Search, not a guarantee that every derivative copy disappears from the internet.

Android media controls

The Android app exposes your profile and contribution media, but the cited help does not establish one fixed, version-independent sequence for deleting a specific photo or video on every Android release. Open your profile from Contribute, enter your media, and use the item’s available More or delete control. If your labels differ, update Maps and follow the in-app wording rather than assuming the computer path is identical.

Who can delete a media item?

The direct delete command is for media added through your own account. If a different user uploaded a photo or video, you need the report workflow. Do not promise a customer, business owner, or another contributor that you can remove their upload yourself; Google makes the policy decision on reported content.

Report content you did not post

If the problem is somebody else’s review, photo, video, business information, or profile contribution, reporting—not the delete command—is the correct route. You cannot directly remove another account’s content.

  1. Open the offending contribution in Google Maps.
  2. Use the item’s report or policy-feedback option.
  3. Select the reason that best describes the problem and submit the report.
  4. Track the report in the Maps app where Google provides report status.

Google evaluates the report against its contribution policies. Its Report or fix content guidance explains that Google may remove or reinstate content regardless of whether a report is accepted. A report is therefore a request for review, not a guaranteed takedown or an appeal result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reporting is preferable to contacting the author

  • Use reporting for harassment, personal information, prohibited material, manipulation, or other policy concerns.
  • Use your own review controls when you are correcting or withdrawing a contribution you authored.
  • Do not file repeated reports simply because you dislike an opinion; moderation decisions are based on policy, not on whether a review is favorable.
  • Keep the selected reason accurate. A report describes a policy concern; it is not a general request to suppress criticism.

Because Google can reinstate or remove content regardless of the report outcome, save any relevant details for your own records rather than treating the report status as a promise of a permanent result.

Troubleshoot changes that do not appear

The review list still shows the old text

  • Confirm that Maps is signed in to the account that authored the review.
  • Close and reopen Maps or reload the computer page.
  • Check the listing itself after a short delay; contribution lists and public listings can update at different times.
  • If Google removed the review for a policy violation, editing it elsewhere will not restore it.
  • Open the review’s More menu again to verify whether the change was saved or whether Maps is still displaying an edit prompt.

A deleted photo or video is still visible

Google says a media deletion can take several minutes to update. Close and reopen Your contributions if the item remains in the list immediately after deletion. Then check both the Maps listing and Google Search. A local, Google Photos, or Google Drive copy is expected to remain until you delete that separate copy. Seeing the original in your phone gallery is not evidence that the Maps deletion failed.

The menu labels do not match

Google publishes separate computer and Android help pages, and app navigation changes over time. Look for the functional equivalents—Your contributions, Reviews, Photos, View your profile, and an item’s More menu—rather than relying on a particular icon position. The documented pages do not provide a dated app version guarantee.

The restricted-profile switch is missing

That control is documented for Android. Verify that you are using the current Google Maps app, are signed in, and have opened Profile picture > Settings > Location and privacy. A computer browser may not expose the same switch. If the setting is present but the profile still appears publicly, remember that profile restriction is not intended to make reviews private; check the review itself and its public listing display.

You cannot find a contribution

Switch accounts first, then open the relevant category under Your contributions or your profile. Reviews and media are separate lists, so a photo will not appear under Reviews and a review will not appear under Photos. If the item was removed by Google for a policy violation, it may no longer be available for editing or deletion.

Understand the boundaries of each control

Action Applies to Does not do
Edit review Your review’s text and rating It does not make the review private or exempt it from moderation.
Delete review Your own review It does not remove another user’s review.
Restrict profile Profile-level discovery on the documented Android setting It does not make public reviews anonymous.
Edit profile Your Maps name, picture, and bio It does not erase contribution history.
Delete media Your own Maps photo or video and its Search copy It does not erase local or synchronized files.
Report content Another user’s potentially policy-violating contribution It does not guarantee removal; Google makes the moderation decision.

Use the narrowest control that matches the problem. That prevents a common mistake: changing a profile setting when the real need is to edit a review, or deleting a cloud listing while assuming the original file has also been erased.

Practical privacy and account checklist

  1. Identify ownership. Confirm which account posted the review or media before attempting a change.
  2. Choose edit versus delete. Edit when the contribution is still useful; delete only when you want it withdrawn from Maps.
  3. Separate profile from review privacy. A restricted profile and a custom Maps name affect discoverability or presentation, not the public status of reviews.
  4. Check storage copies. Deleting Maps media does not remove files in your gallery, Google Photos, or Google Drive.
  5. Use reporting for others’ content. Select the policy reason that actually fits and wait for Google’s decision.
  6. Allow propagation time. A deleted media item may take several minutes to disappear from contribution lists and public surfaces.
  7. Recheck after app changes. Google can move controls, so use the current Android or computer help path when labels change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I delete a Google Maps review?

On a computer, open Menu > Your contributions > Reviews, open More beside the review, choose Delete review, and confirm. On Android, open Contribute > View your profile > See all reviews, tap More beside the review, choose Delete review, and confirm. You must be signed in to the account that wrote it.

How do I edit my Google Maps review?

Use the same paths as deletion, but select Edit review. You can change the available text, star rating, or other details. Google displays an updated post date after an edit, and the revised review remains public and subject to moderation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make my Google Maps reviews private?

No. Google says all reviews are public and that anonymous reviews cannot be added. Android’s restricted-profile switch limits profile-level discovery; it does not turn individual reviews private.

What does restricted profile do on Google Maps?

On Android, open Profile picture > Settings > Location and privacy and turn on the profile-restriction switch. This is a profile visibility control. Google’s guidance does not describe it as hiding reviews from people who can find the relevant listing.

Can I change the name and picture shown with my Maps contributions?

Yes. On Android, open Contribute > View your profile > Edit profile. Google allows profile name, picture, and bio changes, and also supports a custom Maps name and picture instead of the Google Account details. These fields appear on the profile and do not erase past contributions.

How do I remove a photo I posted on Google Maps?

On a computer, go to Menu > Your contributions > Photos, open More on the item, choose Delete this photo, and confirm. The direct deletion applies to media uploaded through your own account. Android labels can vary, so open your profile media and use the available More or delete control.

Does deleting a Maps photo delete it from my phone or Google Photos?

No. Google says the Maps deletion also removes the Google Search version, but it does not delete the original in your device gallery, a Google Photos backup, or a Google Drive copy. Those locations must be managed separately.

Can I delete somebody else’s Google Maps review or photo?

No. Use the item’s report or policy-feedback option instead. Google reviews the report and may remove or reinstate content regardless of whether the report is accepted, so reporting is not a guaranteed takedown.

Why is my deleted photo still showing?

Google says a media deletion can take several minutes to update. Close and reopen Your contributions, then check the Maps listing and Google Search. A copy in your gallery, Google Photos, or Google Drive is separate and is expected to remain.

Why did my Google Maps review disappear?

Google moderates reviews and may remove contributions that violate its policies. Its guidance says reviews removed for policy violations are not reinstated. First verify that you are using the account that posted the review, then consider whether the content may have violated a policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Manage the contribution itself, not a neighboring setting: edit or delete your own review from Your contributions, use Android’s restricted-profile switch only for profile-level discovery, edit your Maps identity separately, and remove your own photos or videos from the Photos list. Reviews remain public, anonymous reviews are not supported, and deleting Maps media does not erase local or synced copies. For another person’s content, report the policy concern and let Google make the moderation decision.
