Manage GNOME Shell extensions from the Extensions app: check each extension against your installed Shell version, install updates when the app offers them, and disable or remove anything that misbehaves. GNOME does not document a universal, fine-grained permission-prompt system for extensions; the practical control is whether an extension is enabled. On managed computers, administrators can set approved extensions with dconf and lock that policy so unlisted extensions do not load.
What “permissions” mean for a GNOME Shell extension
GNOME Shell extensions add or alter Shell features and are identified by a globally unique identifier (UUID). The official documentation describes controls for installing, enabling, disabling, updating and removing extensions, but it does not describe a per-capability permission dialog comparable to a mobile app’s camera or contacts prompt. Do not assume that an extension is sandboxed or that a listing guarantees safe behavior on every Shell release.
For a personal desktop, treat enabling an extension as granting it the ability to participate in your Shell session. Check who maintains it, read its compatibility information, and decide whether the feature is worth the maintenance risk. Keep a record of the UUID if you administer several machines; the UUID, not the display name, is what GNOME uses in configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Where GNOME stores extensions and why the UUID matters
GNOME supports two installation scopes:
| Scope | Location | Who normally controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Per user | ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid> |
The individual user, through the Extensions app or compatible tools |
| Machine wide | /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid> |
A system administrator or the distribution’s package manager |
These paths and the UUID-based layout are documented in GNOME’s Shell extensions administration guide. A machine-wide installation is visible to users but is not automatically active: newly installed machine-wide extensions are disabled by default. That default prevents an administrator’s installation from unexpectedly changing every user’s session.

Check your GNOME Shell version before changing anything
Compatibility is tied to the GNOME Shell version, not merely to the Linux distribution’s name. Find the installed GNOME version in your desktop’s system-information or settings panel, or in the distribution’s release information. Then open the extension’s detail page and compare its listed supported Shell versions and status. The GNOME Extensions site shows those version indicators on extension pages; its User Themes example also explains that browser management requires integration components.
Write down the exact major version (for example, 44, 45 or 46) before installing or updating. A status that was valid on an older release can change when a maintainer publishes a new extension version. Conversely, an extension may remain listed while having no release that supports your current Shell.
Use the Extensions app for normal desktop management
GNOME’s Extensions app is the primary graphical tool for viewing installed extensions, changing preferences, installing available updates, disabling extensions and removing them. The listing states that the app requires GNOME 3.36 or newer. Distribution packaging can differ, so the app may be supplied by your operating system, installed separately, or unavailable under an older release.
Install or open the app
- Install the package named Extensions (the exact package name is distribution-specific) from your distribution’s software source.
- Open the application launcher and start Extensions.
- Review the installed list. Each entry should show an on/off control and, where supported, a preferences button or menu.
The app’s current GNOME Apps listing records version 50.0 as released on 2026-03-14 UTC. That is release metadata for the management app, not a promise that every distribution ships that version or that all extensions support your Shell.
Update an extension
- Open Extensions and look for an update indicator or an available-update action.
- Read the extension’s supported Shell versions and release notes before confirming. If the new release drops support for your Shell, leave the working version installed or disable the extension rather than forcing an incompatible update.
- Apply the update through the app’s update control and test the feature you rely on.
GNOME documents that the app manages updates, but the official sources do not establish a universal checking schedule or a mandatory restart after every update. Follow any restart or re-login instruction that your distribution or the app actually displays instead of assuming a fixed cadence.
Change preferences without disabling the extension
Select an installed extension and open its preferences when that control is available. Preference panels are supplied by the extension author, so labels and options vary. Save the setting, then exercise the affected Shell feature. If the panel is missing, the extension may not expose preferences, may be incompatible, or may have failed to load.

Disable an extension
- In Extensions, locate the extension.
- Switch its enable control off.
- Log out and back in only if your distribution or the app requests it; do not treat a restart as universally required.
Disabling is the quickest recovery step after a Shell crash, visual problem, missing panel or unexpected behavior. It leaves the extension installed so you can re-enable it after checking compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRemove an extension
- Open the extension’s menu in Extensions.
- Choose Remove (the exact wording can vary by app version) and confirm.
- Reopen the app and verify that the entry and its preferences are gone.
Removal is appropriate when the maintainer has abandoned support for your Shell or when you no longer need the feature. If the extension is machine-wide, you may need administrator rights or the distribution’s package-management procedure instead of a per-user removal button.
Manage extensions through extensions.gnome.org
The browser-based GNOME Extensions site can install and manage compatible extensions, but it is not self-contained. GNOME’s documentation states that you need both a browser integration extension and a native-host messaging application. Install both components from sources appropriate to your distribution and browser; if either is missing, the site may show an install button that does nothing or report that it cannot communicate with GNOME Shell.
Use the site to inspect an extension’s Shell-version compatibility and status, then use the desktop Extensions app to confirm the resulting enabled state. A listing on the site is not a guarantee that the extension is bug-free, secure for your environment or compatible with every GNOME release.
Understand the GNOME 45 compatibility break
GNOME 45 introduced a broad change that affects extension code. GNOME Shell moved from GJS’s custom import system to standard JavaScript modules. The GNOME 45 developer release notes state that extensions written for earlier versions are incompatible with GNOME 45 and later. The Shell development team further explains the two-way consequence in its 2 September 2023 article: an extension adapted for GNOME 45 will not work on older Shell versions unless the maintainer provides a separate version.
| Extension build | GNOME Shell 44 and earlier | GNOME Shell 45 and later |
|---|---|---|
| Written for the pre-45 import system | Potentially compatible, subject to the versions listed by its maintainer | Incompatible according to GNOME’s release guidance |
| Adapted to standard modules for 45+ | Incompatible unless a separate older-Shell build exists | Potentially compatible, subject to the listing and testing |
| Maintainer publishes both branches | Use the branch matching your Shell | Use the branch matching your Shell |
This is why an extension’s name, age or previous success is not enough. Before a major GNOME upgrade, check every installed extension individually. If a maintainer has not published a build for the target version, plan to disable or remove it before upgrading rather than troubleshooting a broken Shell afterward.

A safe update and upgrade workflow
Before updating one extension
- Note your installed GNOME Shell version.
- Check the extension’s supported versions and latest release date on its listing.
- Read recent maintainer notes for migration warnings or known regressions.
- Identify a fallback for work-critical functions, such as the standard Shell feature the extension replaces.
Before a major GNOME upgrade
- Open Extensions and record every enabled extension and its UUID.
- Visit each listing and confirm support for the target Shell version, not only your current one.
- Disable extensions with no confirmed target-version build.
- Upgrade GNOME through your distribution’s normal process.
- After logging in, recheck the Extensions app and enable extensions one at a time, testing the associated feature after each change.
Enabling one extension at a time isolates failures. It also avoids confusing a broken extension with a distribution packaging issue or a Shell configuration problem.
Recover when an update breaks the Shell
First response: disable the suspect extension
If the desktop remains usable, open Extensions and switch off the extension most recently updated. If the app cannot identify the problem, disable recently changed extensions one by one until the symptom stops. Remove the incompatible release only after you have confirmed that it is the cause.
Inspect loaded extensions with Looking Glass
GNOME documents Looking Glass as a diagnostic interface. Press Alt+F2, enter lg, and choose the Extensions view. The interface can show which extensions are loaded and expose errors that explain why an extension failed. This is a diagnostic tool, not proof that an extension is safe or compatible.

When the graphical session is unusable
- Use a text console or a second desktop session to remove or rename the affected per-user extension directory under
~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid>, then sign in again. Make a backup before changing files. - If the extension is under
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/, do not edit it as a normal user. Ask an administrator to disable or roll back the machine-wide package. - After recovery, install only a release whose listing explicitly supports your Shell version.
These file-level steps are a recovery option when the app cannot start; the Extensions app remains the preferred management interface for normal use.
Deploy machine-wide extensions as an administrator
Administrators can install a shared extension under /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid>. GNOME deliberately disables newly installed machine-wide extensions by default. To establish an enabled default, use a dconf profile and database as described in GNOME’s machine-wide extension guide.

Set the default enabled list
- Install the extension in the machine-wide directory and verify its UUID directory name.
- Create or select the system dconf profile and database used by your organization.
- Set the
org.gnome.shell.enabled-extensionskey in the profile’s[org/gnome/shell]section to a list of approved UUIDs. For example:
[org/gnome/shell]
enabled-extensions=['extension-one@example.org','extension-two@example.org']
- Run
dconf updateto compile the database. - Have users start a new session and verify that the approved extensions load.
Replace the illustrative UUIDs in the example with the exact IDs of your installed extensions. GNOME notes that this default-setting procedure cannot enable additional extensions for users who are already logged in; those users must begin a new session before the default is applied.
Lock down extension enablement on managed systems
Defaults are not enforcement. For a controlled workstation, GNOME documents dconf locks in its extension lockdown guide. The relevant paths are:
/org/gnome/shell/enabled-extensions/org/gnome/shell/disabled-extensions/org/gnome/shell/development-tools
Lock the enabled-extension list when users must run only an administrator-approved set. With that list locked, installed extensions not named in it are not loaded. Locking the development-tools key also stops users from opening Looking Glass to disable mandatory extensions. Decide whether to lock the disabled list as well; the correct policy depends on whether users are allowed to turn approved extensions off for troubleshooting.
Test the policy with a non-privileged account before broad deployment. Confirm that the approved UUIDs load, an unlisted extension does not, and the Extensions app communicates the restriction clearly. Keep a documented rollback path: an administrator must remove or revise the lock in the dconf profile if an extension update causes a fleet-wide problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between extensions that do the same job
There is no universal “safest” extension based solely on its presence in the GNOME listing. Compare candidates using the same evidence each time:
| Decision axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit Shell support | The listing names your installed major version and shows a compatible status | Prevents installing a build from the wrong JavaScript module era |
| Maintainer activity | Recent releases, issue responses and notes about GNOME changes | Indicates whether future Shell updates are likely to receive fixes |
| Distribution availability | Whether your distribution packages it or you will use the extension site | Determines update workflow, review process and administrator control |
| Operational necessity | Whether the feature is essential or merely cosmetic | Helps you decide how much compatibility maintenance and recovery work is acceptable |
For managed environments, prefer a small, documented allow-list over giving every user unrestricted installation. For personal systems, keep the same discipline for extensions that alter panels, window behavior or login-critical components.

Common problems and targeted fixes
The app says an extension is incompatible
Confirm the installed Shell major version, then check the listing for a build that names it. Do not install a pre-45 build on GNOME 45 or later, and do not assume a 45+ build runs on an older Shell. If no matching release exists, leave the extension disabled and look for a maintained alternative or a built-in Shell feature.
The browser site cannot install an extension
Verify that both the browser integration extension and native host messaging application are installed. Restart the browser after installing them, then revisit the listing. If your distribution does not package the native host, use the desktop Extensions app instead.
An extension disappeared after a system upgrade
Open Extensions and check whether it is disabled or marked incompatible. A major Shell upgrade may invalidate the old code, especially across the GNOME 45 module transition. Install the maintainer’s version for the new Shell only when the listing confirms support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A machine-wide extension is installed but inactive
That is the documented default for new machine-wide installations. Check the UUID, add it to the administrator’s enabled-extensions list, run dconf update, and start a new user session. If the enabled list is locked, only an administrator can change it.
Users cannot disable a mandatory extension
Inspect the dconf lockdown policy. A locked enabled list prevents unlisted extensions from loading, while locking development tools prevents Looking Glass from being used to disable mandatory extensions. Change the policy centrally rather than editing a user’s files.
Quick Recap
Practical maintenance checklist
- Record the GNOME Shell version and each extension UUID.
- Check compatibility before every major Shell upgrade.
- Use the Extensions app for updates, preferences, disabling and removal.
- Install browser integration and the native host before using extensions.gnome.org.
- Disable a newly updated extension first when behavior changes.
- Use Looking Glass only for diagnosis, and expect it to be unavailable when development tools are locked.
- Keep machine-wide extensions in
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/and manage their enabled defaults with dconf. - Lock dconf keys when policy must be enforced, and test the allow-list with a standard account.
- Evaluate maintainer activity and operational necessity, not just the extension’s name or listing presence.
