Manage Android Enterprise AI in separate layers: device feature policies, enrollment-mode and profile boundaries, and cloud-service settings. Start by recording each device’s Android release, ownership model, enrollment mode, and device policy controller (DPC) or enterprise mobility management (EMM) system. Then check whether that combination exposes controls for Google Assistant, Circle to Search, Gemini Nano-powered apps, or newer AI automation. A setting in Android Enterprise does not automatically configure Gemini features in Google Workspace, and an EMM console may not expose every platform capability.
How Android Enterprise AI management is organized
There is no single “generative AI” switch that governs every assistant, search feature, application, and cloud service. Android Enterprise documentation describes several control surfaces that administrators must keep distinct.
| Control layer | What it can govern | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| On-device Android Enterprise policy | Whether features such as Google Assistant or Circle to Search are available, plus permissions for applications that use Gemini Nano on supported devices. | It does not automatically set policies for cloud AI services in an organization’s Workspace tenant. |
| Enrollment mode and profile scope | Where a policy applies: a work profile, an entire fully managed device, a dedicated device, or a personal profile on a company-owned device. | A policy available in one mode is not necessarily available in another. |
| Application and data controls | Managed applications, work data, and Managed Google Play allow or block lists in managed contexts. | Profile separation alone does not describe every sharing path used by third-party apps, keyboards, assistants, or cloud services. |
| Google Workspace service controls | Cloud data access and Workspace applications’ AI behavior, where those administrator settings are provided. | A Workspace setting does not turn an on-device Android feature on or off. |
What administrators can control on the device
Android’s enterprise AI guidance describes controls to turn Google Assistant or Circle to Search on or off and to set permissions for applications powered by Gemini Nano. Availability depends on the device, Android release, enrollment mode, and the policies implemented by the organization’s DPC or EMM. Treat the documentation as a capability description, not a promise that every console exposes every switch.

Why the management mode changes the answer
A Work Profile is a managed work area on a device that may also contain a personal profile. Fully managed mode applies management to the whole company-owned device. Dedicated-device mode is intended for purpose-specific, locked-down equipment. Company-owned devices with a work profile (often called COPE) combine company ownership with profile separation. The same AI feature can therefore be blocked for a whole device, limited to a work profile, or left available in a personal profile, depending on the policy and Android release.

Inventory the device and enrollment before changing an AI setting
Build a device inventory first. Without these fields, an apparently missing policy may simply be unsupported for that device or profile.
- Record the Android release and API level. Android 15 is API level 35; Android 17 is API level 37. Feature-policy behavior is release-specific, so do not infer support from a different version.
- Record ownership. Mark each device as employee-owned, company-owned, or dedicated-purpose equipment. Ownership affects which profiles and whole-device policies are possible.
- Record the enrollment mode. Identify Work Profile, fully managed, dedicated device, or a company-owned device with a work profile. Confirm the mode in the DPC or EMM rather than relying on a user’s description of the phone.
- Identify the management controller. Note the DPC/EMM product, its Android Enterprise integration level, and the policy template assigned to the device. Android defines platform capabilities; the controller determines which of them are exposed in its administrative console.
- Capture manufacturer, model, region, and user-facing feature state. Assistant, Circle to Search, and Gemini Nano support can vary by hardware, software build, language, or market. Record what the employee actually sees before rollout.
Use this inventory to create a support matrix. A policy should be considered deployable only when the Android release, management mode, device build, and EMM console all support it.
Map each AI feature to its own rule
Google Assistant
Decide whether Assistant is allowed on managed devices or in the managed profile. A device policy can address the on-device feature, but the exact control name and placement are EMM-specific. If employees use Assistant from a personal profile, verify whether the policy is scoped to that profile or only to the work profile; do not assume a work-profile restriction removes a personal-profile feature.

Android 15 enterprise release documentation states that administrators can block Circle to Search on fully managed devices or within an Android Work Profile. This is a documented Android 15 capability, not a universal promise for older releases, every manufacturer build, or every EMM. Check that the enrolled device reports Android 15 and that the console exposes the corresponding restriction.

When the restriction is profile-scoped, an employee may still encounter the feature outside the managed profile if the device’s ownership and policy permit it. When it is device-scoped on a fully managed device, the expected effect is broader. Test both the work and personal contexts where both exist.
Applications that use Gemini Nano
Android’s AI guidance describes setting permissions for Gemini Nano-powered applications. Manage this as an application or capability decision rather than assuming that one global Gemini switch exists. Identify which managed apps use on-device Gemini Nano, decide whether they may process work data, and apply the permission exposed by the DPC or EMM. The available permission granularity is implementation-dependent; document the exact scope shown in your console.
On-device processing does not by itself answer every data-governance question. Review the app’s permissions, export and sharing functions, keyboard or assistant integrations, and any cloud service it calls. Android’s profile model establishes policy scope, not the behavior of every third-party data path.

Android 17 AI automation policy
Android 17 enterprise documentation adds a release-specific control for AI automation. Administrators can disable AI automation on fully managed devices and on the personal profile of company-owned devices with a work profile by using setNearbyAppStreamingPolicy. The Android 17 framework prevents this automation inside work profiles.

Do not project this rule backward to Android 15 or earlier versions, and do not treat it as the same setting as Gemini Nano application permissions. Confirm that the device is running Android 17 (API level 37), that the DPC supports the policy, and that the intended target is fully managed or the personal profile of a COPE device.
Compare Android Enterprise management modes
| Mode | Typical ownership and scope | AI-policy planning | Privacy implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work Profile | Usually an employee-owned device with a separate managed work area. | Apply controls to the work profile. Android 15 documents Circle to Search blocking in this scope; other controls require capability verification. | The organization manages work apps and data. Personal-profile use remains private within the limits of the documented profile model. |
| Fully managed | Company-owned device managed across the entire device. | Whole-device restrictions can be available, including the documented Android 15 Circle to Search block and the Android 17 AI automation policy. | The organization controls the device configuration; there is no separate unmanaged personal profile by default. |
| Dedicated device | Company-owned equipment assigned to a focused task, such as a kiosk or shared terminal. | Use only policies that the dedicated-device enrollment and EMM expose. The broad Android documentation does not provide a complete per-feature AI matrix for this mode. | Personal use is generally not the design goal; confirm the actual launcher, user, and data configuration. |
| COPE with Work Profile | Company-owned device with separate work and personal profiles. | Keep work-profile restrictions distinct from personal-profile controls. Android 17 specifically documents AI automation disabling for the personal profile through setNearbyAppStreamingPolicy. |
Work data is managed while the personal profile remains separate. Scope and wipe behavior must be tested on the actual build. |
Android Enterprise supports these enrollment families, but the available AI policy set is not identical across them. A console may show a restriction for fully managed devices and omit it for Work Profile enrollment, or vice versa.
Deploy an AI policy safely
Android does not provide one universal administrative-console workflow because menu names and policy coverage come from the DPC or EMM. The following sequence works across providers without pretending that a particular console label is universal.
- Write the rule in plain language. For example: “Block Circle to Search in the work profile,” “Allow Assistant only on fully managed tablets,” or “Deny Gemini Nano permissions to the managed messaging app.” Keep one decision per feature.
- Filter the device group by release and enrollment mode. Separate Android 15 fully managed devices from older releases, and separate Work Profile devices from company-owned fully managed devices. Do not assign a release-specific policy to a mixed group until unsupported members are excluded or handled.
- Open the Android Enterprise device-policy area in the EMM. Search the controller’s restrictions, device-experience, application-permission, or security sections for the exact feature name. If no matching control appears, treat that as an implementation gap to verify with the provider, not as proof that Android lacks the capability.
- Set the narrowest valid scope. Choose work profile rather than whole device when the business requirement concerns only managed data. Choose whole-device scope only when the ownership model and policy require it.
- Save, publish, and assign the policy. Note the target group, Android release, enrollment mode, policy version, and expected user-visible result. A saved draft is not an applied restriction.
- Force or await synchronization according to the controller. Confirm that the device checked in and received the new policy. Record the policy status and timestamp rather than relying on an employee’s immediate observation.
- Test representative devices. Use at least one device for each Android release, ownership type, enrollment mode, manufacturer build, and relevant region. Check the feature in work and personal contexts where both exist.
- Communicate the result. Tell employees what is blocked, where it is blocked, and which profile is affected. Explain that a work-profile restriction does not necessarily change a personal-profile feature.
- Monitor exceptions and rollback. Keep the previous policy version available. If a business-critical function breaks, remove the assignment from the affected test group, verify synchronization, and investigate scope before changing the rule globally.
Keep Workspace AI controls separate
Android’s enterprise AI material discusses Workspace security and cloud controls separately from on-device feature policies. A device restriction for Assistant, Circle to Search, or a Gemini Nano-powered application does not configure Gemini behavior in Google Workspace. Conversely, changing a Workspace service setting does not necessarily hide an Android system feature.

Use two coordinated workstreams:
- Device workstream: Android release, enrollment mode, DPC policy, app permissions, profile scope, and device synchronization.
- Cloud workstream: Workspace service settings, cloud data access, retention or sharing rules, and the organization’s approved AI applications.
Document the owner and change record for each workstream. When a user reports that “AI is still available,” first determine whether they mean an on-device feature, a managed application, or a Workspace service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand Work Profile privacy and data boundaries
Work Profile creates a managed work area separate from personal apps and data. The organization can manage work applications and information, and Android’s user documentation describes remotely wiping work-profile data on a personal device without removing personal data. Android security guidance also describes personal-profile app use as private while allowing Managed Google Play controls for managed contexts.
That separation is a scope boundary, not a guarantee about every possible disclosure. A third-party app may offer sharing, a keyboard may process text, or an assistant may send information to a cloud service according to its own design. Review app permissions, sharing pathways, keyboard policies, assistant settings, and Workspace controls separately. Do not tell employees that profile separation automatically prevents all information from reaching an AI service.
On an employee-owned device, removing the Work Profile removes managed work data and applications while leaving personal data in place, according to Android’s documented behavior. Test the removal and restore process with your organization’s DPC before relying on it for an offboarding procedure.

Troubleshoot common management failures
The Circle to Search policy is missing
- Check that the device is actually on Android 15 (API 35) and enrolled as fully managed or with a Work Profile.
- Confirm that the DPC or EMM version supports the Android restriction and that the device is assigned the correct policy template.
- Verify whether the manufacturer build or region exposes the feature.
- If the console still lacks the setting, ask the provider whether its current Android Enterprise integration surfaces the platform policy.
The policy is assigned but the feature remains visible
- Check the device’s last successful check-in and policy version.
- Test the feature in the profile to which the policy was assigned; a work-profile restriction may not affect a personal profile.
- Look for conflicting policies inherited from a higher-level group.
- Confirm that the user is testing the managed app or managed context rather than an unmanaged copy.
A Gemini Nano permission cannot be changed
- Verify that the application actually uses Gemini Nano on that device and build.
- Check whether the EMM exposes application permissions for the enrollment mode in question.
- Review app-level permissions and cloud calls; an Android AI permission is not a substitute for a complete data-flow review.
Users confuse device AI with Workspace AI
Ask for the exact screen and app. A system search gesture, an on-device assistant, a managed application, and a Workspace web service belong to different control layers. Route the issue to the device-policy owner or Workspace administrator accordingly.
Android 17 automation behaves differently from expectations
Confirm API level 37, policy support in the DPC, and the target profile. The documented Android 17 policy applies to fully managed devices and the personal profile of COPE devices, while the framework prevents automation inside Work Profiles. It is not a general control for every earlier Android release or every profile.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you documented Android release, API level, ownership, enrollment mode, manufacturer build, and region?
- Is the desired result about Assistant, Circle to Search, Gemini Nano application permissions, AI automation, or a Workspace cloud service?
- Does the target policy apply to the whole device, the work profile, or a personal profile on a company-owned device?
- Does the DPC/EMM expose the Android capability for that exact combination?
- Have you tested work and personal contexts separately where both exist?
- Have you reviewed app permissions, keyboard and sharing paths, and Workspace settings instead of relying on profile separation alone?
- Is there a documented rollback and a user message explaining the scope?
The reliable approach is to treat Android Enterprise AI as a version- and mode-dependent policy exercise. Inventory first, assign one rule per feature, keep device and Workspace controls separate, and validate the result on representative enrolled devices before broad deployment.
