On Android, Gemini Live can continue while you use other apps or after you lock the phone only when the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel is enabled. You must unlock the phone to start a Live session. To let an already active conversation continue after locking, enable Gemini on lock screen in Gemini’s settings. Screen sharing and camera sharing follow separate interruption rules, so neither should be treated like ordinary audio.
Google’s Android instruction is explicit: "To use Gemini Live in the background or while your device is locked, Live with Gemini notifications must be on." The controls below explain what that setting does, which permissions are unrelated, and how to recover when Live pauses.
What controls Gemini Live in the background
Three independent choices determine what happens when a Live conversation leaves the foreground:

- Gemini on lock screen: a Gemini setting that determines whether an active session may continue when the phone is locked.
- Sharing mode: audio-only, camera, or full-screen sharing. Camera and screen sharing have stricter stop-and-resume behavior than audio.
These settings do not let you start a new conversation from a locked phone. Starting Live still requires unlocking the device and opening Gemini. They govern an active session after you move away from the app, press the power button, or change the session state.

It helps to treat the controls as separate layers. The notification channel keeps the Live service available outside the foreground. The lock-screen setting decides whether an existing audio conversation remains active after authentication is no longer visible. Sharing controls decide whether Gemini receives the camera view or the entire display. Turning on one layer does not silently turn on the others.
Platform, app, and availability requirements
Android scope
Google documents background and lock-screen controls for Gemini Live in the Gemini mobile app, or Gemini serving as the mobile assistant, on an Android phone or tablet. Live is not available in the Gemini web app or in Gemini within Google Messages. Sign in to Gemini Apps and keep the Google app current before troubleshooting settings.
Google releases feature updates gradually. Your phone may therefore show a different label, location, or set of controls from another Android device even when both are running supported software. Manufacturer skins and Android versions also rearrange notification menus. Use the setting names in this guide as the anchor rather than relying on an identical sequence of screens.

If you are checking a newly configured phone, confirm the basics in this order: the Google app is installed and current, you are signed in to Gemini Apps, and Live is being opened in the mobile app rather than a browser or Google Messages. A missing control can reflect gradual feature availability rather than a mistake in your notification settings.
iPhone and iPad scope
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions cover starting Live and controlling the microphone, but they do not establish that Android’s Live notification channel or lock-screen continuation setting exists on iOS. Do not assume that enabling an Android option will create equivalent background behavior on an Apple device.
Turn on the Live with Gemini notification channel on Android
Enable the channel before you expect Live to remain active outside the Gemini app. If Google notifications are globally disabled, the individual channel cannot work until the parent setting is restored.
- Open the Android Settings app.
- Open Notifications, then App notifications.
- Select Google.
- If the master switch is off, enable All Google Notifications.
- Find the channel named Live with Gemini and turn it on.
Menu names can vary by manufacturer. On some phones, you reach the same controls through Settings → Apps → Google → Notifications. The decisive check is that the Google app’s specific Live with Gemini channel is enabled, not merely that some Google alerts are allowed.

After changing the channel, start a new Live session while the phone is unlocked. A notification may appear while the session is active; that notification is the mechanism Android uses to keep Live available when Gemini is no longer the foreground app.
If you cannot see the channel, open Live once while signed in and then revisit the Google app’s notification page. Labels and channel visibility can depend on the app version and device software. Do not substitute Android’s general notification-access permission for this channel; they are separate controls with separate jobs.

Allow an active conversation to continue after locking
Notification permission and lock-screen continuation are related but separate. In Gemini’s settings, locate Gemini on lock screen and enable it if you want an active Live conversation to continue when the display is locked.
The resulting behavior is state-dependent:
- With Live with Gemini notifications enabled and Gemini on lock screen enabled, an already running Live session can continue after you lock the phone.
- If Gemini on lock screen is disabled, locking the phone puts Live on hold rather than allowing the conversation to continue.
- Regardless of these settings, a locked phone cannot be used to start a new Live session. Unlock it first.
Lock-screen continuation applies to the existing conversation, not to a bypass of the device’s authentication. If the phone is locked before you open Gemini and begin Live, you must authenticate and start the session normally.
For a predictable test, unlock the phone, begin an audio-only Live session, confirm that it is active, and then lock the display. If the conversation stops, check both settings before changing sharing modes. Testing with the camera or screen on can produce a different result because those streams are designed to stop on lock.
Know what Hold, Mute, End, and locking actually do
Several controls can look similar because they all affect the microphone or the visible Live screen. They produce different outcomes.

Mute is not a privacy stop for visuals. Google says camera or screen sharing can continue while the microphone is muted. Use the camera or screen control itself when you need to stop visual sharing, and use End when the entire session should close.
Hold is useful for a temporary break: it preserves the conversation for resumption but turns off the microphone and interrupts visual sharing. Mute is different when you want Gemini to remain in the live conversation while you stay silent. End is final for that session, although the transcript remains available and the previous chat can be reopened in Live mode.
Camera sharing: when it stops and how it resumes
Camera sharing is controlled inside the Live chat. Turning it on sends the camera view to Gemini; turning it off ends that visual stream while leaving the conversation available.
The camera turns off in three documented situations:
- You place Live on hold.
- You leave the Gemini app.
- You lock the screen.
Resuming from Hold automatically turns the camera back on. The other two cases do not: returning to Gemini after leaving the app, or unlocking the phone after a lock, requires you to start camera sharing again manually. This difference explains why an audio conversation may resume while the camera preview remains absent.

Before showing another person, a document, or a private location, ask for permission. Google’s Live guidance specifically tells users to respect other people’s privacy and obtain consent before recording or including them in a Live chat.

Check the camera control whenever you return from another app or unlock the device.
Screen sharing: a deliberate stop on hold or lock
Screen sharing exposes the full device screen rather than a single selected app. Gemini requires notifications to be enabled before screen sharing can be used.
Screen sharing stops whenever you put Live on hold or lock the screen. It does not restart automatically when you resume Live or unlock the phone. Open the Live controls and start screen sharing again each time. If the option is unavailable, first verify the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel; this is a prerequisite for the feature.
Because the entire display is shared, close or hide information you do not intend to reveal before starting. Muting the microphone does not stop screen sharing, so treat audio and screen controls as separate privacy decisions.

This fail-closed behavior prevents an old screen view from silently resuming.
Do not confuse Live notifications with notification access
Android exposes another Google permission that sounds similar: notification access for Device assistance. It serves a different purpose.
- Live with Gemini notification channel: keeps Gemini Live available in the background or during lock-screen continuation.
- Google app notification access for Device assistance: lets Gemini read or reply to Android device notifications when you explicitly want that assistant capability.
Device assistance is Android-only, and Google notes that some actions require additional settings or permissions. Grant notification access only when you want Gemini to process notifications. Turning it on is not a substitute for enabling Live with Gemini, and enabling the Live channel does not automatically grant Gemini access to all of your device notifications.
When auditing permissions, ask what you are trying to accomplish. Background conversation requires the Live channel and, for lock continuation, the lock-screen setting. Reading or replying to other apps’ notifications requires Device assistance notification access. Enabling the latter solely to keep Live running grants a broader capability than the Live feature needs.

A troubleshooting sequence for pauses and missing sharing
Check the conditions in this order so that a harmless session state is not mistaken for a permission failure.
Live stops as soon as you leave Gemini
- Return to the Gemini app and confirm that the session is still open rather than ended.
- Open Android Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Google.
- Enable All Google Notifications if necessary, then enable Live with Gemini.
- Start a fresh Live session while unlocked and test by switching to another app.
If the channel is already on but Live still pauses, check for a device-specific battery or background restriction imposed by the phone manufacturer. Google’s documented requirement is the notification channel; OEM power-management behavior can add another layer.
Live pauses whenever the screen locks
Open Gemini’s settings and check Gemini on lock screen. When that setting is off, locking is expected to put Live on hold. Turn it on, keep the Live notification channel enabled, unlock the phone, and begin a new session before testing again.
The session continues, but the camera disappeared
Locking the screen and leaving the Gemini app both turn camera sharing off. Unlock the device or return to Gemini, then activate camera sharing again. Only a session paused with Hold automatically restores the camera when you resume.
Screen sharing disappeared after unlocking
This is expected behavior, not a failed resume. Locking or holding Live stops screen sharing, and Google does not restart it automatically. Start screen sharing again from the Live controls after returning to the session.
The microphone is silent but Live is still open
Check whether you selected Mute or Hold. Both turn off the microphone, but mute leaves Live active while hold pauses it. Tap the corresponding control to resume speaking; ending and reopening the chat is unnecessary unless you intentionally ended the session.
You cannot start Live from the lock screen
That limitation is intentional. Unlock the phone, open Gemini, and start Live there. The lock-screen setting supports continuation of an existing session; it is not an entry point for a new one.
The Live channel is enabled, but screen sharing is unavailable
Confirm that the Google app’s parent notification setting, All Google Notifications, is also enabled. Then start Live from the unlocked phone and look for the screen-sharing control inside that session. A notification-access permission for Device assistance does not replace the Live channel requirement.

On an iPhone or iPad, open the Gemini mobile app and tap Live, or swipe left to reach it. Follow the first-use prompts if this is your first session.

Google’s iOS guidance identifies two basic controls:
- Hold: pauses Live and turns off the microphone.
- End: exits Live and ends the current session.
The available iOS instructions do not document Android’s Live with Gemini notification channel or Gemini on lock screen setting. Therefore, apply the Android background procedure only to Android devices and use the controls visible in the iOS app for an Apple device.
Do not use the presence of a Live button on iOS as proof that every Android behavior is supported there. Google’s platform instructions are separate, and feature availability can change gradually by account and app release.
A practical privacy checklist before every Live session
- Unlock the phone before attempting to start Live.
- Decide whether audio-only, camera, or full-screen sharing is necessary.
- For camera or screen sharing, remove unrelated private information from view and obtain consent from people who may appear.
- Use Mute when you need silence but want the Live session and visual sharing to remain active.
- Use Hold when you want to pause the microphone and temporarily stop camera or screen sharing.
- Use End when the conversation is finished; the transcript is then available in the chat.
- After locking or holding, verify camera and screen status instead of assuming they resumed.
- Keep Device assistance notification access disabled unless you specifically want Gemini to read or reply to Android notifications.
For a meeting or public setting, decide in advance what should happen if you press the power button. Audio may continue when both Android settings allow it, but camera and screen sharing stop. If continuing audio would be inappropriate, use Hold or End rather than relying on the lock screen alone.
What to expect as Google changes Gemini
Google says Gemini features are released gradually, so availability, wording, and menu placement can change by account, device, Android version, and app release. If a control named in this guide is missing, update the Google app, confirm that you are signed in to Gemini Apps, and look for the same setting under the Google app’s notification controls or Gemini’s own settings. A missing Android control does not establish that the equivalent feature exists on iOS, the web app, or Google Messages.

Why does Gemini Live stop when I lock my Android phone?
