Strict invigilation is easier to manage when you remove uncertainty before the exam, rehearse one or two permitted coping techniques, and know exactly how to raise a procedural problem. Confirm the timetable, identity checks, permitted equipment, room or technology requirements, question procedure, and break rules with your school or test provider. During the exam, follow the invigilator’s instructions, use a brief practiced breathing technique if the rules allow it, and ask promptly when something is unclear rather than guessing or improvising.

Anxiety differs from student to student. Ofqual’s England-specific student guidance says “anxiety is not inevitable,” but it does not promise that every candidate will feel calm or perform better with any particular technique. Remote-proctoring research is limited and mixed, so strict supervision should be treated as a preparation and communication issue, not as proof that an exam will go badly.

What strict invigilation changes—and what it does not

Invigilation adds visible rules: you may need to arrive at a precise time, show identification, leave personal items outside the room, keep your workspace in view of a camera, or ask permission before speaking or taking a break. Those requirements can make uncertainty feel more noticeable. They do not change the academic standard of the paper, and they do not mean that every student will become more anxious or perform worse.

People respond differently to supervision. Some find a controlled room reassuring; others worry about being watched, making an accidental rule violation, or losing time while reporting a problem. Treat your reaction as information about what to prepare for, not as a prediction of your result.

Ofqual’s review of remote invigilation describes a 2019 study by Woldeab and Brothen involving 631 psychology undergraduates. Of these, 587 took a traditionally invigilated test at a centre and 44 took the same examination with remote invigilation. Overall performance did not differ between the groups in that study, while students with higher anxiety traits in the remote group reported feeling uncomfortable with the proctor. Ofqual cautions that the available studies use small samples, so the findings cannot establish a universal effect.

Before the exam: remove avoidable uncertainty

Get the rules from the organisation running your exam

Ask your teacher, exams officer, university, or test provider for the current instructions rather than relying on a friend’s experience or an old handbook. In England, Ofqual’s guide to exams and assessments in 2026 (published 15 January 2026) advises students to clarify logistics and authorised equipment with their teacher or exams officer.

  1. Write down the date, start time, reporting time, location, and what happens if you arrive late.
  2. For an online assessment, record the login address supplied by the provider, identity-check steps, supported browser or software, camera and microphone requirements, and the telephone or chat route for technical help.
  3. List every permitted item, such as an approved calculator, formula sheet, pencil, or ruler. Ask whether labels, cases, annotations, or particular models are restricted.
  4. Ask how to signal that you have a question. In a room this might be raising your hand; online it could be a platform button or a spoken request.
  5. Check the rules for toilet visits, water, medication, assistive technology, and planned breaks. Do not assume that a practice-test rule applies to the real assessment.

Ofqual’s 2026 England guide states that phones, watches, and other electronic devices are prohibited in the exam room. It suggests an unlabelled clear bottle of water where the particular exam allows one. These are England-specific examples, not a substitute for your own paper’s instructions; the exam provider’s rule controls.

Use a small logistics checklist

Item to confirm What to record Why it helps
Arrival or login Time, entrance or login process, identity documents, late-arrival policy Prevents a last-minute decision when you are already activated
Workspace Allowed desk, wall, lighting, other people, camera view, prohibited objects Lets you set up once instead of repeatedly checking the room
Materials Exact calculator, stationery, reference sheet, water or medication permissions Stops accidental possession of an unauthorised item
Communication How to ask a question, report a fault, or request help Replaces guessing with a known procedure
Breaks and incidents Whether breaks are allowed, how to request them, and what to do if you become ill Gives you a lawful response to a physical or technical problem

Turn revision into manageable targets

Last-minute rereading can make a large syllabus feel even less controllable. Ofqual’s student coping guide, updated 6 May 2025 for England, recommends planning topics, setting manageable timed targets, practising questions, and checking progress.

  1. Divide the syllabus into specific topics small enough to complete in one sitting.
  2. Set a timed target, such as one concept review or a defined set of problems, rather than “revise everything.”
  3. Attempt an exam-style question immediately after studying the topic.
  4. Mark what you could and could not do, then choose the next target from that evidence.
  5. Keep a short list of unresolved points to ask a teacher about instead of carrying vague worry.

A paper revision planner or simple calendar can hold these targets; it is an organisational aid, not a treatment for anxiety and not an assurance of higher marks.

Replace catastrophic predictions with workable instructions

Notice thoughts such as “I will definitely fail,” “I will forget everything,” or “If I ask a question, I will be disqualified.” Replace them with a positive but realistic alternative: “I may feel anxious, but I can read one question, answer the part I know, and ask if a procedural detail is unclear.” The aim is not to force optimism. It is to give your attention a specific next action.

Rehearse one or two permitted coping skills

Ofqual’s 2019 anxiety guidance describes diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness. Practise before exam day so the method is familiar rather than an experiment under time pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Slow diaphragmatic breathing: let the breath move low into the abdomen and make the exhale unhurried. Practise sitting still, then while reading a question.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: briefly tense and release muscle groups in a quiet practice session. During an exam, use only a discreet version that does not disturb others or breach the rules.
  • Mindfulness: notice the physical signs of anxiety and return attention to the immediate task—your hands on the desk, the line you are reading, or the instruction you must follow.

Ofqual’s blog gives the coping statement, “If I get anxious, I will try some calm breathing.” You can adapt that format to your own plan. Do not use a phone, timer, audio track, movement, or object in the exam unless the rules or an approved accommodation expressly permit it.

Prepare a remote-proctored workspace without guessing

Online invigilation rules belong to the institution or test provider. Read its setup page and complete any official mock or system check. Confirm the required camera angle, microphone, internet connection, browser, identification, room scan, and what must be removed from the desk.

The Open University, for example, gives institution-specific instructions about clearing a workspace and notifying it in advance about breaks, medication, and medical devices. Those directions illustrate why you should read your provider’s own policy; they are not universal ProctorU or online-exam rules.

  2. Install updates and close unrelated applications only as the provider instructs.
  3. Place permitted materials where the camera can show them if required.
  4. Arrange a backup way to contact technical support, such as a phone number written outside the camera’s permitted area if that is allowed.
  5. Ask in advance how a disconnection, power failure, camera fault, or identity-check problem is logged.

On exam day: follow a predictable routine

Use the earliest reporting time the provider gives you, not the advertised start time. Allow time for travel, security, identity checks, or the online room scan. Eat, drink, and take prescribed medication according to your normal routine unless a clinician has told you otherwise.

  • Carry only the items confirmed as permitted.
  • Put a phone, watch, and other prohibited electronics where the rules require, even if they are switched off.
  • Read the displayed or printed instructions before starting; do not begin early if told to wait.
  • Keep your identification and authorised materials ready for inspection.
  • Remind yourself of the single coping action you have practised and the exact way to ask for help.

What to do when anxiety rises during the exam

A short pause can prevent panic from taking over, provided the pause is allowed by the exam rules. Use this sequence:

  1. Stop and orient. Keep your eyes on the paper or screen and notice that you are in the examination session, not in a future failure scenario.
  2. Slow the exhale. Use your practised breathing method quietly. Do not count with a device or leave your seat unless permitted.
  3. Use your coping statement. For example: “If I get anxious, I will try some calm breathing.”
  4. Read the question again. Identify the command word, the topic, the number of marks, and any required format.
  5. Start with a manageable part. Write a definition, set out known data, or answer an easier question if the paper’s instructions allow you to choose order.
  6. Reassess. If you still cannot work, follow the approved procedure for asking the invigilator rather than inventing your own break or leaving.

Do not speak aloud, move around, use a personal timer, consult an unauthorised object, or take an unscheduled break simply because you feel panicked. Those actions can create a conduct issue even when your intention is only to calm down.

If an instruction or question is unclear

Raise the issue promptly using the stated signal. An invigilator may be able to clarify a procedural matter, such as whether a page is missing or how to record an answer, but normally cannot explain the academic meaning of a question. Ask exactly what is unclear and accept the answer given. Waiting while repeatedly rereading can increase both anxiety and lost time.

If technology fails in a remote exam

Follow the provider’s fault-reporting procedure immediately. Note the time and the message displayed if you can do so without violating the rules. Do not restart the application, change networks, or use another device unless the provider or invigilator tells you to. A documented incident gives the institution information it can use when applying its own disruption policy.

If you become physically unwell

Alert the invigilator as soon as possible. In England, special consideration has defined eligibility for qualifying illness, injury, or unforeseen events that affect an exam; it is not a general remedy for ordinary nerves. The school or exam centre decides whether the circumstances meet the applicable rules.

When to seek support or ask about accommodations

Ofqual lists possible signs of high exam anxiety including going blank, difficulty concentrating, catastrophic thoughts, tension, panic, feeling overwhelmed, dizziness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, and stomach discomfort. Occasional nerves are different from symptoms that occur most of the time or stop you from studying, travelling to an exam, or completing assessments.

If anxiety is persistent, disabling, or linked to a diagnosed or suspected condition, speak early with a school counsellor, educational psychologist, campus disability service, clinician, or exam provider. Describe functional effects—such as losing the ability to read, write, remain seated, or process instructions—rather than asking only for a particular adjustment.

Jurisdiction or setting What the cited guidance establishes Important limit
England Ofqual’s access-arrangement and special-consideration systems are governed by exam-specific rules. Discuss needs promptly with the school or college. There is no blanket entitlement based on ordinary exam nerves.
United States The US Department of Justice explains that ADA testing protections can apply to specified high-stakes exams for eligible people with disabilities. Examples may include extended time or a distraction-reduced room, based on an individualised process. Anxiety alone does not automatically establish eligibility; documentation, functional need, deadlines, and the test entity’s procedures matter. The DOJ page cited here was last updated 28 February 2020.
Canada The federal Public Service Commission lists possible individual adjustments for mental-health disabilities, including additional time, extra breaks, flexible scheduling, and individual sessions. This is guidance for federal public-service hiring assessments, not a universal entitlement for every Canadian exam.

Ask about evidence requirements and application deadlines before exam day. Do not promise yourself or another student a separate room, extra time, or rest breaks until the relevant organisation has approved them in writing.

What the evidence says about remote invigilation

Ofqual defines remote invigilation as supervision of an assessment taken at a candidate’s chosen location under controlled conditions. Its review reports student preference figures from Milone et al. (2017): 34% preferred a course using remote invigilation, 23% said they would avoid such a course, and 44% said it would make no difference. These percentages describe that study’s respondents as reported by Ofqual; they are not a current estimate of all students.

The same review’s summary of Woldeab and Brothen (2019) found no overall performance difference between the 587 traditionally invigilated students and the 44 remote-invigilated students, while some higher-trait-anxiety students in the remote group felt uncomfortable with the proctor. The unequal, small groups and the review’s stated limitations mean you should not treat remote supervision as a proven cause of poor performance or distress.

Common situations and a rule-safe response

Situation Response Avoid
You cannot find a permitted calculator or document Tell the exams officer before the start and ask what substitute, if any, is authorised. Borrowing an unapproved item after the exam begins.
You think the invigilator missed your raised hand Use the published signal again and remain seated unless instructed otherwise. Calling across the room or approaching the desk without permission.
A camera or connection stops working Use the provider’s fault channel and follow its recovery instructions. Switching devices or applications without authorisation.
You need medication or a break Use the arrangement approved in advance, or ask the invigilator what the current rules permit. Taking an unapproved break or opening a container without notice.
You suddenly go blank Use the permitted breathing pause, reread the command word, and begin with a manageable part. Assuming the blank feeling proves you have forgotten the entire subject.

Make a one-page personal plan

Write this plan before the week of the exam and keep it with your revision materials:

  1. Rules: the reporting time, permitted equipment, prohibited items, question signal, break policy, and technical-help route.
  2. Triggers: the situations most likely to raise your anxiety, such as room scans, a blank first question, or a camera warning.
  3. Response: one breathing or grounding method, one realistic coping statement, and the first task you will do next.
  4. Support: the person or office to contact about persistent symptoms or an accommodation request, plus the deadline.
  5. Incident record: what to note if illness, technology failure, or an invigilation problem affects the session.

Practise the plan during a timed question under conditions that resemble the real exam. The purpose is familiarity and a clear decision path, not a guarantee that anxiety will disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the exam

If a technical fault, illness, or procedural event materially affected your attempt, report it through the institution’s stated channel as soon as possible and keep any reference number or written response. Describe observable facts—times, messages, instructions, and what work was interrupted—rather than trying to diagnose your own eligibility for special consideration.

For ordinary anxiety, review which preparation steps helped and which rule or uncertainty caused difficulty. Use that information to update the next exam plan. If symptoms continue outside exam periods or interfere with daily life, arrange professional support rather than waiting for another assessment.
