Plan for the pre-load requirement, not just the installed file size. After Update 9.7.0, Destiny 2 occupies about 179–195 GB once installed, but a major update or reinstall can require up to 353 GB of free space on PC storefronts and 235.32 GB on PS4. Check the figure for your platform first, then remove other games or files through the platform’s storage controls. Destiny 2 does not provide a universal in-game tool for selectively deleting individual campaigns, languages, or expansions.

How much storage does Destiny 2 need?

Bungie’s current storage table is tied to Update 9.7.0, released June 9, 2026. It lists both the approximate installed file size and the free space needed to pre-load or install the game. Those are different requirements: the second number is the one to use when you are preparing for a major update or a fresh installation.

The figures below are estimates rather than exact measurements. Bungie says that installed languages can affect some platform totals, and that small updates or hotfixes may not trigger a revision of the published table. Check the official Destiny Platform Storage Requirements table again when a later major release is announced.

Platform Approximate installed file size Free space for pre-load/installation
PlayStation 5 179.23 GB 179.23 GB
PlayStation 4 178.79 GB 235.32 GB
Xbox Series X|S 195.36 GB 195.36 GB
Xbox One 183.94 GB 183.94 GB
Steam 180.90 GB 353.00 GB
Epic Games Store 180.65 GB 352.56 GB
Microsoft Store for PC 181.76 GB 181.76 GB

Do not rank one platform as “better” from these numbers. They describe storage allocation behavior, not graphics, frame rate, or game quality. The unusually large pre-load figures on PS4, Steam, and Epic Games Store are the most important planning issue for a player with a nearly full drive.

Use the installed-size column to understand how much room the finished game is likely to occupy after the operation completes. Use the pre-load column when deciding whether an update or reinstall can start. A drive with 200 GB free might hold the completed PS5 installation, for example, but it is not enough for a Steam or Epic installation that requires roughly 353 GB during setup. Conversely, freeing hundreds of gigabytes is unnecessary if you are only checking the eventual footprint and are not about to update or reinstall.

Why can a Destiny 2 update need more space than the game itself?

A download is the data transferred from Bungie’s servers. Installation is the local process of unpacking, checking, replacing, and arranging that data. A platform can therefore need temporary working room in addition to the space occupied by the finished files. The exact process and amount vary by platform, and Bungie does not describe one identical mechanism for every system.

For Update 9.7.0, Bungie published these download sizes:

Platform Update 9.7.0 download Important qualification
PlayStation 5 27.54 GB Bungie notes that download size can vary with installed languages. A download figure is not the same as the free-space requirement.
PlayStation 4 26.71 GB
Xbox Series X|S 39.29 GB
Xbox One 36.70 GB
Steam 28.40 GB
Epic Games Store 27.18 GB
Microsoft Store for PC 35.80 GB

For example, Steam lists an approximately 180.90 GB installed footprint but a 353.00 GB pre-load requirement. Freeing only 30 GB because that is the displayed download size may still leave the update unable to start. Bungie’s wording is explicit: “The above-listed File Size and Storage Space Needed Requirements are not exact numbers.” Treat the pre-load amount as the planning target and leave additional headroom when possible.

The same distinction applies to a reinstall. The launcher may download a package that is smaller than the temporary space it reserves while it verifies and places files. Do not cancel a process merely because the transferred amount looks close to the final size, and do not assume that pausing the download releases every reserved gigabyte immediately. Let the platform finish or cancel cleanly, then check its storage screen again.

Check the correct requirement before deleting anything

  1. Identify the edition and platform. Use the row for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, Epic Games Store, or Microsoft Store for PC. Do not substitute a console figure for the PC storefront you actually use.
  2. Check free space on the drive where Destiny 2 is installed. On a PC, that may be a different drive from the one holding the launcher. On a console, check the internal drive or the external drive assigned to the game.
  3. Compare free space with the pre-load column. If the available amount is below that number, remove or move files before starting the update. The installed-size column is useful for estimating the final footprint, but it is not the safe update target.
  4. Recheck after every large deletion. Storage totals can change after the platform empties a recycle bin, completes a move, or removes temporary installation data.

Also check whether another download, recording, or system update is using the same drive. A console can reserve space for queued items, while a PC may have a full recycle bin or a launcher cache that is not obvious from the game’s properties page. Finish or cancel unrelated transfers, then refresh the storage display before deciding how much more to remove.

Bungie states that players who do not have enough storage “may need to delete or uninstall some files to reach the minimum storage requirements.” That is a platform-storage remedy, not a promise that Destiny 2 exposes a package-by-package cleanup menu.

Safest ways to remove unused content

Remove other games first

The least risky option is to uninstall a game you no longer play, or move one to compatible external storage. Use the console’s Storage menu or your PC launcher’s installed-games management screen. This leaves Destiny 2’s files and account data untouched and is usually easier to reverse than modifying a live installation.

Delete captures, downloads, and other large files

Review video clips, screenshots, installers, and duplicate personal files. Console captures can consume many gigabytes without appearing in the game list. On Windows, sort the relevant drive by size and check the Recycle Bin after deleting. Avoid deleting folders whose purpose you cannot identify, especially shared system or launcher directories.

Move games instead of deleting them when supported

A compatible external SSD or hard drive can provide capacity without permanently removing a game. Compatibility, required connection standard, and whether a title can run directly from the drive depend on the platform. Bungie does not endorse a particular drive or verify that every external device can run Destiny 2, so consult the current storage documentation for your console or PC before buying. Do not assume that any USB disk supports playing a current-generation game directly.

There is no single Bungie-approved model or fixed price to use as a buying benchmark. Compare the capacity you actually need with your platform’s interface and connection requirements, and confirm whether the drive is intended only for storage or can also run the game. A cheaper high-capacity hard drive may be suitable for moving games on one system, while another system may require faster storage for play; the platform documentation determines that distinction.

Uninstall Destiny 2 only as a last resort

Removing the entire installation frees the space occupied by the game, but reinstalling still requires the platform’s pre-load amount. It is not a way to avoid the large installation requirement; it is useful when the current installation is damaged or when you are not going to play for a long period.

How to uninstall and reinstall Destiny 2 safely

PlayStation 5

Use the PS5 game options and storage controls to delete Destiny 2, then reinstall it from your game library. Bungie’s PlayStation 5 installation guide covers the console-specific process and add-on handling. Some add-ons may be listed separately and may need their own installation.

When you reinstall, sign in with the same PlayStation Network ID used for your Destiny account. Bungie’s guidance explains that using the same account preserves access to the associated characters and progress; deleting local game files does not create a new set of characters.

Xbox Series X|S

Open the Xbox storage or installed-games controls, select Destiny 2, and choose the uninstall option. The official Xbox Series X|S installation guide explains uninstalling, reinstalling, updating, and installing add-ons. Xbox One owners should use the equivalent storage controls on their console; the available menu wording can differ by system software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall through the same Xbox account and verify the required add-ons after the base download completes. As on PlayStation, account-linked characters and progress are not stored solely in the local installation.

PC launchers

Use the launcher’s installed-library management controls to uninstall Destiny 2 from the same drive on which it is installed. Before reinstalling, confirm that the target drive has at least the platform’s listed pre-load space, not merely the approximately 181 GB final footprint. If the launcher offers a library-location choice, select a drive with enough free capacity before beginning the download.

Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store for PC can show different reservation behavior even though their final file sizes are close. Select the storefront row that matches the installation you are actually repairing. Do not use the 353 GB Steam estimate as a universal PC rule, and do not assume the 181.76 GB Microsoft Store figure applies to an Epic or Steam library.

Can you delete a Destiny 2 campaign, language, or expansion?

There is no current, universal in-game storage manager that lets you select individual Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, languages, or expansions and see a guaranteed saving for each item. Bungie’s storage guidance does not publish a cross-platform inventory of removable Destiny packages or per-package space savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means you should not delete a folder simply because its name resembles an old expansion, and you should not assume that removing a language file will free a particular number of gigabytes. A launcher or console may expose separately installable add-ons, but the available components and their sizes depend on the platform and account. If you remove an add-on through the platform’s own interface, record what you changed so you can reinstall the same component later.

  • Do not promise yourself a specific saving for a campaign or expansion unless your platform displays that amount directly.
  • Do not edit Destiny 2’s installation directory manually while the launcher is open.
  • Do not remove files from a shared content, shader, or package folder based only on a filename.
  • Use the platform’s verify, repair, or reinstall function if files are missing after an attempted cleanup.

What to do when an update still reports insufficient space

The free-space number is below the pre-load requirement

Stop the update and remove or move enough files to exceed the pre-load figure. Because Bungie’s values are estimates and installation may need working room, aim for a cushion rather than stopping exactly at the published minimum.

The drive has room, but the launcher checks another drive

Confirm the installation location in the launcher or console storage settings. A launcher can download to one volume while reserving installation space on another. Freeing space on the wrong drive will not satisfy the check.

The available space changed after deleting files

Empty the platform’s recycle or recently deleted area, finish any pending move operation, and restart the launcher or console. Recheck the storage screen before retrying the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The requirement appears different from Bungie’s table

Bungie says the published numbers are not exact, can vary with installed languages, and may not change for every small update or hotfix. Use the value displayed by your platform for the current operation, then compare it with the official table for context. A later major content release can change both the final footprint and the temporary installation requirement.

The installation fails after space was freed

Use the platform’s built-in repair or verify process, then retry with the game closed. If the installation remains corrupted, uninstall and reinstall through the official platform controls rather than deleting individual files. Keep the account credentials and add-on list available before starting a full reinstall.

Storage planning after Update 9.7.0

Bungie says that, following the June 9, 2026 release of Update 9.7.0, Destiny 2 will no longer receive planned live-service content updates. The Update 9.7.0 support guide also notes that future health or stability hotfixes may still be needed. This reduces the expectation of regular planned content downloads, but it does not make the storage figures permanent: hotfixes, platform changes, installed languages, and later maintenance can alter the amount required.

For a major update or a fresh installation, keep the platform-specific pre-load amount available. For ordinary play, the installed-size figure is a better indication of the space occupied after installation. Keeping additional free capacity avoids having to uninstall something at the exact moment an update is released.

A practical cleanup checklist

  • Record your platform and the current Bungie pre-load figure.
  • Check free space on the exact drive used for Destiny 2.
  • Remove an unused game, large capture library, installer, or personal file before touching Destiny 2.
  • Move another game to a verified compatible external drive if your platform supports that use.
  • Do not manually delete unidentified Destiny 2 folders or assume an expansion has a known removable size.
  • If uninstalling Destiny 2, use the official console or launcher controls and reinstall with the same account.
  • After cleanup, restart the platform or launcher and verify the updated free-space total.
  • Check Bungie’s storage table again when a later major update changes the requirement.

Sources and current figures

The platform estimates and storage caveats come from Bungie Help’s Destiny Platform Storage Requirements. Update 9.7.0’s date, download figures, and content-update status are in Bungie’s Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 Support Guide. Frequently Asked Questions

How much free space should I leave for Destiny 2?

Use Bungie’s pre-load figure for your platform, not only the installed file size: 179.23 GB on PS5, 235.32 GB on PS4, 195.36 GB on Xbox Series X|S, 183.94 GB on Xbox One, 353.00 GB on Steam, 352.56 GB on Epic Games Store, and 181.76 GB through Microsoft Store for PC. Leave a cushion because Bungie describes the figures as estimates.

Why is the Steam requirement almost twice the installed size?

Steam’s current estimate is about 180.90 GB installed but 353.00 GB for pre-load or installation. The platform may need temporary working space while it downloads, verifies, replaces, and arranges files. The download amount alone is not the free-space requirement.

Can I delete an old Destiny 2 expansion to save space?

There is no universal in-game tool or Bungie-published cross-platform list showing removable packages and guaranteed savings. Remove add-ons only through the platform’s own interface, and do not delete folders manually based on their names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will uninstalling Destiny 2 erase my characters?

Bungie’s PlayStation and Xbox installation guidance says to reinstall with the same PSN ID or Xbox Gamertag. Characters and progress associated with that account are not stored solely in the local game files, although you should verify the account before starting a reinstall.

Is an external SSD or hard drive a good solution?

It can add capacity or let you move another game, but compatibility, connection requirements, and whether Destiny 2 can run directly from the drive depend on the platform. Bungie does not endorse a particular model or price. Check the current PlayStation, Xbox, or PC storage documentation before buying.

What if my platform asks for a different amount than Bungie’s table?

Use the amount shown for the current operation, then compare it with Bungie’s table for context. Bungie says estimates can vary with installed languages and that small updates or hotfixes may not change the published figures.

Should I delete files from the Destiny 2 installation folder?

No. Manual deletion can remove shared packages or required files. Use the launcher or console’s uninstall, verify, repair, or add-on controls instead; if the installation is damaged, a full official reinstall is safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check your exact platform’s pre-load requirement first. Free space by removing other games, captures, downloads, or personal files through official storage controls; use external storage only after confirming compatibility. Do not manually delete Destiny 2 packages, and reinstall with the same account if you remove the game.
