Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader does not present a single, universal companion-approval meter that you can farm to guarantee loyalty. Companions react through conviction-sensitive dialogue, biography and doctrine choices, personal quests, party-presence conditions, recruitment decisions, and character-specific story outcomes. To keep your roster intact, bring the relevant companion to major conversations, complete personal quests, track Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical choices, and treat late Chapter 4 recruitment as conditional and potentially irreversible.

There is no single approval score to manage

Many role-playing games expose companion approval as a number, rank, or progress bar. The available evidence for Rogue Trader does not establish an equivalent universal meter. You should not expect a displayed value such as “Abelard: 72 approval,” nor should you assume that repeating friendly dialogue or selecting one type of gift will secure every companion.

Instead, companion reactions are distributed across several systems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Convictions: your Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical choices can change how characters respond to you and which conversations become available.
  • Biography and doctrines: your Rogue Trader’s background and ideological decisions are part of the reactivity Owlcat designed for companions and non-player characters.
  • Companion-specific quests: personal missions can alter an individual’s story and ending.
  • Party presence: some documented dialogue and conviction choices require the named companion to be in the active party when the scene begins.
  • Recruitment and irreversible decisions: companions join at different points, and some late recruits depend on earlier actions and conviction alignment.

These factors overlap, but none is a reliable substitute for the others. A character may approve of one conviction choice yet still leave because a personal quest was ignored or a later story condition was met. Conversely, a companion who objects to a single decision is not automatically lost.

What Owlcat said about reactivity

In a beta-development feedback post, Owlcat wrote: “One of the most frequent complaints in the survey was the insufficient reactivity of NPCs and companions to the Rogue Trader’s biography, doctrines, and convictions.” That statement describes the development history of the system, not a complete current trigger list or a guarantee that every reaction is visible to the player. Conviction tags were also incomplete or misplaced during development, so older discussions can describe behavior that no longer matches your version.

How convictions affect companion management

Conviction is a long-term ideological path rather than a simple approval rating. Choices award points toward three labels, and those points can unlock dialogue, alter reactions, and support certain story outcomes. You can mix choices, but consistently pursuing a path makes its related options more likely to appear.

Conviction Practical meaning when managing companions How to use it safely
Dogmatic Favors strict Imperial orthodoxy, hierarchy, and obedience. Review the companion reactions and quest consequences before selecting a strongly authoritarian response.
Iconoclast Favors pragmatic compassion, independence, and saving lives where possible. Check whether a compassionate option changes a quest state or conflicts with a companion’s priorities.
Heretical Favors corruption, forbidden power, or rejection of Imperial doctrine. Treat major Heretical choices as high-risk story decisions; they can affect recruitment and later availability.

The labels are useful for planning, but old point totals are not dependable. Owlcat’s Update 1.3 notes, published December 10, 2024, announced a “Major increase in availability of conviction points.” The update increased the values of many Act III and Act IV dialogue choices and projects that grant Dogmatic, Heretical, or Iconoclast points. Choices already selected and projects already completed did not immediately award the new points, because the change was intended to avoid involuntarily shifting an existing character’s conviction. This is why a guide written before Update 1.3 may predict a threshold that your current playthrough reaches earlier or later.

A safe workflow for major companion decisions

Use this routine before a quest conversation, a conviction-tagged response, or a decision that appears to change the status of a companion.

  1. Make a manual save. Save before entering the relevant area or starting the conversation, not after the dialogue has already begun. This gives you a recovery point if the result is different from the description in an older guide.
  2. Read the quest journal. Look for a named companion, a personal quest objective, a warning about a faction, or language indicating that the next step is time-sensitive. A personal quest can matter more than a single approval-style response.
  3. Check the active party. If the dialogue names a companion or offers a conviction choice, add that companion before triggering the scene. Documented choice lists mark party-presence requirements for companions including Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae.
  4. Identify the conviction tag. Decide whether you are deliberately pursuing Dogmatic, Iconoclast, or Heretical progression. Do not rely on an old screenshot or point table; Update 1.3 changed availability and awards in later acts.
  5. Read every response. A line that sounds polite can carry a conviction tag or a faction consequence. If the game shows a conviction icon, treat it as a strategic choice rather than flavor text.
  6. Finish the follow-up. Return to the companion, revisit the quest location, or complete the requested objective. A favorable response in the first conversation does not replace the personal-quest step that determines the eventual outcome.

If you cannot determine the consequence, keep the save, choose the option that matches your intended conviction, and watch for the next quest update. Avoid reloading repeatedly to chase an invisible “best” approval result; there is no confirmed universal score that makes one answer optimal for every companion.

Keep companions available when a scene may require them

Active-party requirements are real in some choices

A community-maintained conviction-choice reference explicitly marks several entries with party-presence requirements. Examples include choices involving Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae. The practical rule is simple: if a quest or choice is clearly about a companion, take that companion with you before starting the conversation. Waiting on the Voidship or in the inactive roster may prevent the intended reaction or option from appearing.

This does not prove that every off-party reaction is ignored. The available references do not provide a complete, current database of how every companion responds when absent. Therefore, “the companion must be present” is the safe procedure for scenes where you want their reaction, not a claim that all remote reactions are impossible.

Use the reserve roster deliberately

Keep at least one flexible party slot or a planned rotation schedule. Before leaving the Voidship, review active personal quests and bring the companion whose quest is closest to its next objective. If the party is full, rotate someone out at a safe travel point rather than entering a major dialogue and discovering that the required companion is missing.

Do not dismiss a companion merely because their combat role overlaps with someone else. A character who is not your preferred damage dealer may still be needed for a personal quest, a conviction choice, or a later ending condition.

Recruitment is spread across the campaign

The roster is not assembled in one opening sequence. The companion reference describes recruitment during the prologue and Chapters 1 through 3, alongside optional, secret, and downloadable-content-dependent characters. Because availability is phased, losing track of a recruitment opportunity can leave you with fewer options for later quests and combat roles.

Recruitment category When to plan for it Party-management implication
Prologue companions Join during the opening section. Use them to establish your initial role coverage and begin any personal objectives as soon as they appear.
Chapter 1–3 companions Join during the main campaign’s early and middle acts. Check each new recruit’s quest immediately; their joining level also affects later respec limits.
Optional or secret companions Require exploration, a particular decision, or a less obvious interaction. Keep manual saves before major act transitions and investigate unusual quest results instead of assuming every recruit is automatic.
DLC-dependent companions Availability depends on the installed content and its campaign integration. Do not treat a missing character as evidence that you failed an approval check; verify whether the relevant content is present.

The sources do not establish a complete, current companion-by-companion recruitment table. Platform, edition, and later patches can also change availability. Use the roster you actually have, and record when each character joined so that you can plan their personal quests and respec options.

Spoiler warning: late Chapter 4 recruitment

One or two final companions may be recruitable shortly before the end of Chapter 4. The walkthrough evidence describes this as conditional: the result depends on your conviction and earlier actions, and the opportunity is close to a point of no return. It does not provide a complete decision tree that can be safely reduced to one universal sequence.

Before crossing the Chapter 4 point of no return:

  • Make a separate manual save.
  • Review your current Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical progression.
  • Confirm that prerequisite conversations and quests from earlier acts are complete.
  • Check whether the potential recruit is already available to speak with or has an unresolved objective.
  • Do not assume that a late recruit can be recovered by changing one final dialogue answer.

If obtaining a particular secret companion matters to you, follow a current walkthrough for that character while preserving your own save at each irreversible step. The available evidence supports the timing and conditional nature of the opportunity, not every individual trigger.

Personal quests matter more than a presumed approval bar

Companion quests are not optional flavor if your goal is to keep the party together. The roster reference states that these quests can influence individual endings. They also provide the clearest opportunities to learn what a companion wants, which factions they distrust, and which convictions create friction.

How to manage personal quests

  • Read the objective after every major act. A quest may pause until a later location or event rather than being complete.
  • Bring the owner of the quest. Even when the journal does not explicitly say so, the active-party requirement used by some conviction choices makes this the safest practice.
  • Do not postpone every companion quest to the finale. The later acts contain more conviction-sensitive content, and delaying several personal stories can make it harder to tell which action changed an outcome.
  • Keep the companion alive and available. A character who is dismissed, lost, or unavailable cannot participate in a scene that requires their presence.
  • Record consequential choices. A short note such as “accepted the faction’s demand in Act II” helps you understand a later reaction without relying on a guide’s outdated assumptions.

What is not confirmed

The available material does not establish exact departure thresholds for every companion. There is no verified table saying that a particular character leaves after a fixed number of disliked responses, nor is there evidence that one approval value guarantees loyalty. Treat claims of universal thresholds with caution unless they are tied to a specific character, version, and quest state.

Build a party around complementary roles

Keeping the party together does not mean taking all companions everywhere. Rotate them according to the task, while preserving the character needed for a quest or dialogue. The roster reference gives several useful role examples:

Companion example Role described in the roster reference How to use that information
Abelard Melee-oriented Warrior Use him to anchor close combat and to satisfy scenes that specifically call for his presence.
Argenta Ranged Soldier Provides sustained ranged pressure while another character controls the front line.
Cassia Support Officer Brings support utility and is explicitly among the companions named in party-presence examples.
Pasqal Distinct technical and combat capabilities Rotate him in when his abilities or a quest conversation are relevant; his presence is also marked for certain choices.
Jae Distinct utility and combat capabilities Keep her available for her own story and for choices that list her as present-party required.

These examples are not a mandatory “best party.” A balanced group normally covers frontline durability, ranged damage, support, and whatever specialized tools the current mission demands. The important management decision is to rotate without abandoning personal quests or entering a marked conversation with the wrong roster.

Respecs help, but they do not erase a companion’s identity

The roster reference describes respec access through the High Factorum on the Voidship Bridge. Respecs can correct an early talent choice or adapt a companion to your current party, but they are limited:

  • The respec level cap is tied to the level at which the companion joined.
  • Key character build choices remain locked.
  • A respec does not change the companion’s story, conviction reactions, personal quest, or recruitment conditions.

Plan around the companion you recruited rather than expecting complete build freedom. If a late recruit joins at a higher level, that character can have a different respec ceiling from someone who joined in the prologue. Use the High Factorum to repair a role mismatch, not to turn every companion into the same class.

Common party-management problems and fixes

“I chose the friendly answer, but the companion still objected.”

Friendly wording is not the same as shared conviction. Check whether the response carried a Dogmatic, Iconoclast, or Heretical tag, and review the companion’s personal quest. A single agreeable line cannot override an incompatible ideological or story decision.

“The expected dialogue option is missing.”

Reload the save made before the conversation, add the named companion to the active party, and re-enter the scene. Party-presence conditions are documented for several choices. If the option remains absent, verify that the relevant quest step and conviction progression have actually been reached.

“An old guide says I should already have enough conviction points.”

Check the guide’s date and act. Update 1.3 changed the availability and value of many later-act conviction awards, while previously completed choices were not retroactively recalculated. Follow the current game’s displayed progression rather than copying historical point totals.

“A companion has not appeared.”

Separate three possibilities: the character is recruited in a later chapter, is optional or secret, or requires downloadable content. The roster is phased, so absence early in the campaign is not automatically a failed approval check. Keep a save before major transitions and verify the character’s recruitment window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I am approaching the end of Chapter 4 and want a secret companion.”

Stop before the point of no return, save separately, and review the relevant conviction and earlier actions. The late opportunity is conditional and close to the campaign’s end; changing one final response may not repair a missed prerequisite.

“I am worried someone will leave.”

There is no confirmed universal departure threshold. The safest protections are to complete personal quests, keep companions available for their scenes, avoid treating conviction choices as cosmetic, and preserve saves before irreversible decisions. This reduces preventable losses without pretending that every outcome can be predicted from one score.

A practical checklist for keeping the roster together

  • Save before major companion conversations and act transitions.
  • Review the quest journal whenever a companion receives a new objective.
  • Bring the named companion into the active party for their quest and for conviction choices that list a presence requirement.
  • Track your intended Dogmatic, Iconoclast, or Heretical direction, especially in Acts III and IV.
  • Do not copy old conviction-point totals without checking the game version; Update 1.3 changed later-act awards.
  • Rotate companions for role coverage, but do not leave a quest owner behind for a scene that may require them.
  • Use the High Factorum for corrective respecs while remembering the joining-level cap and locked build decisions.
  • Before Chapter 4’s point of no return, verify secret-recruitment conditions and create a dedicated save.
  • Treat claims of exact departure thresholds as character- and version-specific unless supported by a current, detailed guide.

Bottom line

Manage companions in Rogue Trader as a network of story conditions, not as a single approval statistic. Keep the right character in the active party for important scenes, pursue personal quests, make conviction choices deliberately, and protect your saves before recruitment and act-transition decisions. That approach keeps the most options open while respecting the game’s character-specific outcomes—and it remains reliable even when an older guide’s approval numbers no longer match the current conviction system.
