Check an extension’s requested permissions before installing it, then reduce its website access to the narrowest scope that still supports the feature you need. In Chrome, limit access to selected sites or activate it only when you select the extension. In Firefox, review permissions in Add-ons Manager and leave optional capabilities disabled until they are needed. A warning describes what an extension could access—not proof that its developer is misusing that access.
What browser-extension permissions actually mean
A browser extension runs with capabilities granted by the browser. A permission prompt describes the information, pages or browser controls the extension can reach if you approve it. It does not establish that the extension is malicious, that it will use every capability, or that it sends data elsewhere.
Google’s Chrome Web Store Help puts the distinction plainly: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Treat the request as a capability disclosure and a decision point. Ask whether the requested access is necessary for the feature you want and whether you can narrow it after installation.

Why all-site access deserves special attention
“Your data on all the websites you visit” is a particularly broad host permission. Google describes it as the ability to read, request or modify data on every page, including account pages. Depending on the extension and the page, that could include content you type, information displayed in a web application, or actions performed in an authenticated session. The permission describes potential reach; it is not evidence that every extension actually collects or transmits those details.

A useful rule is to grant the smallest functional permission: specific sites instead of every site, click-to-activate access instead of permanent access, and optional capabilities only when a feature requires them.
Check an extension before you install it
- Identify the exact feature you need. A tool that formats one web application may need access to that application’s pages. A local utility that does not interact with websites should not need broad page access.
- Read every listed capability. Look beyond website access for requests involving browsing history, tabs, bookmarks, location, clipboard contents, personal files, webcam or other device data.
- Compare scope with purpose. “All websites” is a much wider request than a named list of sites or activation only on the current page. A broad request may be justified by a feature that works across sites, but you should be able to explain why.
- Look for optional access. If a browser lets you decline an additional permission, leave it off until you use the related feature.
- Plan the fallback. If an extension stops working after you narrow access, decide whether that feature is worth expanding the scope or whether you can use the site manually instead.
Store descriptions and permission prompts help you understand capability, but they do not independently prove how a particular developer handles data. Consider the extension’s necessity, its current maintenance and whether its displayed scope makes sense for your use.
Manage permissions in Chrome desktop
Chrome provides controls in the extension manager and a quick site-data control in the toolbar. The labels below refer to Chrome desktop; other editions or mobile browsers may use different menus.
Set a default website scope in Manage extensions
- Open the Chrome menu and choose Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Find the extension and select Details.
- Locate Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit.
- Choose the narrowest available setting: On select, On specific sites or On all sites.
- If you choose a site list, review Allowed sites. Add only the domains the extension needs and remove entries you no longer use.
“On specific sites” is the practical choice when an extension is useful on a known set of services. Do not add a broad parent domain simply because one subsite needs access; include the smallest site scope that still works, where Chrome’s site picker allows that level of control.
Use click-to-activate or current-site access
Open Chrome’s Extensions menu in the toolbar and use the extension’s site-data control. Chrome offers access when you select the extension, on the current site or on all sites.
- When you select the extension: access applies to the current site in the open tab or window. Chrome requires you to select the extension again after that tab or window closes.
- On the current site: grant access for the site you are viewing when you need the extension there.
- On all sites: leave the extension’s website access broad whenever Chrome permits it.
Click-to-activate is useful for an extension you use occasionally. It reduces standing access, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the extension’s other permissions.

Disable or remove an extension
From Extensions > Manage extensions, use the extension’s control to disable it when you want to keep its settings but stop it from running. Choose the remove option when you no longer need it or no longer trust the requested scope. Removing an extension also removes the browser-level permission associated with it, although it does not undo information the extension may already have handled.

Changing host permissions affects sites covered by the extension’s declared host permissions. It does not control an extension that changes lower-level network access through VPN or proxy settings. If an extension requests or uses those controls, a site-by-site host setting alone is not a complete privacy boundary.
Manage optional permissions in Firefox
Firefox separates some additional capabilities as optional permissions. An extension can request one when you first use the related feature, rather than requiring every capability at installation.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Extensions and themes.
- Select Extensions.
- Choose the extension you want to inspect.
- Open Permissions and data and read the listed access.
- Under Optional permissions for added functionality, turn each permission on or off with its toggle.
Leave an optional permission off when you do not use that function. Firefox may prompt you the first time the extension tries to use it; grant it only if the feature and the requested capability match.
These steps describe Firefox’s general desktop workflow. Menus can differ in other browser variants, operating systems and mobile products. Current workflows for Edge, Safari and mobile browsers should not be assumed to match Chrome desktop or Firefox desktop.

The wording varies by browser, but the following categories describe the kinds of capability a prompt may represent. They are possibilities tied to the specific request, not proof that the extension exercises or transmits the data.

A permission name can be technically accurate while still being too broad for your situation. Judge it against the extension’s advertised function and your own exposure: an extension used on financial, health or work accounts deserves more restrictive site access than one used only on public pages.
Compare two extensions that do the same job
When several extensions provide a similar feature, do not choose solely by ratings or a short description. Put their displayed capabilities side by side.

There is no universal safety score in the cited guidance, and a permission list does not establish an individual extension’s actual data practices. Use the comparison to reduce unnecessary capability, not to declare an extension safe or unsafe from one warning alone.

A practical permission decision checklist
Use this short sequence whenever you install an extension, approve a new prompt or compare replacements:
- Need: Do you still need the extension, or has the original problem disappeared?
- Match: Does each requested permission correspond to a feature you will use?
- Scope: Can you select named sites, the current site or click-to-activate access instead of all sites?
- Optionality: Can an optional permission stay off until the first time you need it?
- Sensitivity: Will the extension run on pages containing account, payment, health, employment or confidential information?
- Control: Do you know where to disable, remove or revisit the permission later?
- Change: If a future update asks for more access, will you reassess rather than approve automatically?
If the answer to the scope question is no, decide whether the broader access is essential enough to justify the exposure. If it is not, choose a different extension or use the feature manually.
Review permissions as part of maintenance
Check after updates or new prompts
An extension’s required access can change when its feature set changes. Treat a new permission prompt as a fresh decision: read the capability, identify the new function and narrow or decline it if you do not need that function.

Remove dormant extensions
Unused extensions provide no benefit while remaining part of your browser’s active software. Periodically open Chrome’s extension manager or Firefox’s Add-ons Manager, identify tools you no longer use and disable or remove them.
Recheck site lists
Specific-site access can become broader over time as you add domains for one-off tasks. Remove temporary or obsolete entries so the list continues to represent your current workflow.
Separate permission review from data-retention claims
Narrowing a browser permission limits what the extension can access going forward under that setting. It does not prove what data was previously processed, nor does it erase information a developer may already hold. If that distinction matters, consult the developer’s current privacy documentation and account controls rather than treating the browser toggle as a deletion request.

A 2021 USENIX Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security paper, Understanding Users’ Knowledge about the Privacy and Security of Browser Extensions, reported that 47 of the 50 most-downloaded extensions in the Firefox Web Store requested “Access all data on all websites.” The study retrieved store download counts in August 2020. That is a historical sample, not a current estimate of the entire extension ecosystem and not evidence that each extension in the sample was malicious.
The finding is still useful context: many popular tools have historically requested broad access, so popularity alone is not a reason to approve an all-site permission. Read the scope and decide whether the feature justifies it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The warning means the extension is dangerous.”
Correction: the warning identifies potential capability. Investigate whether the request fits the feature, then limit it where possible.

“A store listing guarantees privacy.”
Correction: a listing and prompt explain declared capability, not every detail of real-world data handling. Consider necessity, scope and the developer’s privacy information.
“Specific sites protect against every kind of network access.”
Correction: Chrome’s host-permission setting does not govern lower-level VPN or proxy changes. Review those requests separately.
“I can approve everything now and fix it later.”
Correction: make the narrow choice at installation or first use, especially before visiting sensitive accounts. Later review is valuable, but it is not a substitute for minimizing initial access.

Can an extension read my passwords?
A website-data permission can expose content on pages where you are signed in, but the prompt alone does not establish exactly what an extension reads or stores. Treat all-site access as capable of reaching sensitive account pages and narrow it unless the feature clearly requires broader coverage.
Should I reject every extension that asks for all-site access?
Not automatically. Some cross-site features may need it. First try selected-site or click-to-activate access; if the feature fails, decide whether its benefit justifies the broader capability.
Does disabling an extension delete data it already collected?
No. Disabling stops the browser from running it under the disabled state, but it does not establish that previously handled data was deleted. Check the developer’s privacy and account controls if deletion is important.
Why did Firefox ask for a permission after installation?
Firefox can treat additional functionality as optional and request that permission when the extension first uses the related feature. You can leave the toggle off until you need that function.
