During a major Bitcoin drop, do not make the first decision about buying or selling. First make the position survivable: stop adding leverage, confirm that essential bills and emergency cash are protected, secure the account or wallet, and follow a written risk limit. Bitcoin’s price can fall sharply, while exchange failures, hacking, withdrawal suspensions, private-key loss and liquidity problems can create separate losses.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned that Bitcoin’s exchange rate “could drastically decline”; its 2014 investor alert records a historical fall of more than 50% in one day. That is a historical warning, not a prediction of the next move. No official source establishes a universal Bitcoin allocation, sell percentage, stop-loss, dollar-cost-averaging schedule or buy-the-dip rule. Your decision should follow your cash needs, time horizon, custody arrangement and prewritten loss limit.
What to do first when Bitcoin is falling
Use this sequence before changing your position. It is designed to prevent a volatile market from turning into a financial, security or operational emergency.
- Stop adding leverage. Do not open new margin positions, perpetual futures or options trades while you are trying to understand your exposure. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says leverage makes a change in the cash price more significant and warns that futures and options speculation is high risk.
- Protect essential liquidity. Keep money for rent or mortgage payments, debt service, taxes, insurance, healthcare and an emergency reserve outside the Bitcoin position. If a total loss would impair any of those obligations, the position is larger than your stated risk capacity.
- Record the actual exposure. List Bitcoin held on each exchange, in each wallet and through any exchange-traded product, along with borrowed amounts, collateral requirements and pending transfers. Include cash that would be needed to meet a margin call.
- Secure access before moving funds. Check the email account, password, multi-factor authentication, withdrawal settings and trusted devices associated with every account. Do not rush a transfer because of a social-media message, a pop-up warning or an alleged support call.
- Separate price risk from custody risk. A Bitcoin price decline affects every form of exposure. An exchange account also carries platform, withdrawal, insolvency and cyber risks; self-custody removes dependence on an exchange but makes you responsible for the private keys and recovery process.
- Pause irreversible actions. Verify the destination address, network and amount on a separate screen before sending. A hardware wallet can help keep private keys away from an internet-connected device, but it cannot reverse a wrong address or protect the market value of Bitcoin.
- Read your written rule. If you did not define what loss, cash need or time horizon would require a reduction before the drop, do not invent a precise percentage in the middle of the panic. First establish the rule, then apply it consistently.
Why a Bitcoin crash creates several kinds of risk
Market-price risk
Bitcoin is a speculative asset with extreme volatility. The SEC’s 2014 alert used the phrase “could drastically decline” and documented a historical one-day decline of more than 50%. The figure describes what had happened by the date of that alert; it does not establish a normal daily range or forecast a future crash.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
A large price move can also change your practical choices. A position that looked affordable at purchase may consume money needed for bills after a fall. If you borrowed to buy it, the lender or trading platform can require additional collateral or close the position while the market is down.
Leverage and liquidation risk
Leverage increases the dollar effect of a given Bitcoin move. The CFTC states that profits and losses related to volatility are amplified in margined futures contracts. Perpetual futures, margin accounts and options therefore add collateral, liquidation, settlement and counterparty questions to the underlying price risk. They are not simple substitutes for selling or guaranteed insurance.
Platform and counterparty risk
An exchange can be hacked, suffer a technical failure, halt withdrawals, become insolvent or provide weaker customer protections than you expected. A price chart may continue updating while access to your balance or the ability to withdraw is impaired. Keeping coins on an exchange is therefore a custody decision, not just a trading convenience.

Cyber and fraud risk
Phishing, malware, compromised email accounts and fake support messages are especially dangerous during a fast drop. Attackers exploit urgency by asking for a recovery phrase, a remote-screen session, a new withdrawal address or a “verification” payment. No legitimate support process needs your wallet recovery phrase.
Operational and key-loss risk
Self-custody changes who can authorize a transaction. You control the private keys, but you also control the recovery process. Losing the recovery information, sending to an incorrect address or allowing someone else to obtain the phrase can produce permanent loss. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin explains that wallets hold private keys rather than the crypto asset itself and that self-custody makes the investor responsible for those keys.
Make the position survivable
Use a loss-capacity test
Ask what would happen if the Bitcoin position went to zero, not merely whether you expect a recovery. The SEC’s 2023 investor guidance says: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” Apply that test to the combined value of coins, derivatives, leveraged loans and Bitcoin-linked products.

- Can you continue paying essential bills without selling at a loss?
- Are taxes and debt payments funded separately?
- Would a withdrawal delay or account freeze leave you unable to access emergency cash?
- Could a lender liquidate the position before you choose to act?
- Would a family member or business partner be able to follow your recovery instructions if you were unavailable?
Official guidance does not provide a universal percentage of a portfolio that belongs in Bitcoin. A suitable size depends on income stability, obligations, other assets, time horizon and tolerance for a complete loss. A number copied from someone else is not a risk plan.
Keep emergency liquidity outside the trade
Emergency cash should not depend on a Bitcoin sale, an exchange withdrawal or a functioning wallet. Separate the reserve before deciding whether to hold, reduce or add to the position. If the reserve is already exposed, restoring liquidity is a stronger priority than trying to predict the bottom.
Write rules before the next drop
A useful rule connects an action to a condition you can observe. Examples include reducing exposure when it exceeds a personal maximum, refusing to borrow against Bitcoin, or requiring a specified amount of cash before any purchase. These are planning examples, not official thresholds. Record the reason, the trigger, the person authorized to act and the account or wallet affected.
Should you sell Bitcoin during a crash?
Selling can be rational when the position is too large, when essential cash is at risk, when debt or collateral creates liquidation pressure, or when the original investment thesis and time horizon have changed. Holding can be rational when the position is small enough to lose, the money is not needed, there is no leverage and the custody arrangement remains secure. Buying can be rational only after those conditions are satisfied and a prewritten plan permits it.
Do not let a decision framework become a disguised prediction. The cited SEC and CFTC guidance identifies risks; it does not tell investors a price at which to sell or buy. Before placing an order, answer these questions in writing:
- What maximum loss can I absorb without affecting essential obligations?
- What event, rather than what emotion, would make me reduce the position?
- How long can the money remain invested?
- What fees, taxes, spreads or transfer delays apply to the chosen route?
- Could I complete the transaction safely if the exchange, phone or email account were compromised?
If you cannot answer the first question, do not add exposure. If you need the money soon, reduce risk according to your plan rather than waiting for a forecast.

Why leverage is particularly dangerous in a drop
With an unleveraged holding, the market value changes while the coins remain in your custody or account. With margin or derivatives, the platform can require collateral, liquidate the position, charge funding or settle a contract while you are unable to choose the timing. A relatively small move in the cash price can therefore produce a much larger loss on your capital.
The CFTC notes that futures and options may be used by hedgers to manage volatility, but describes these instruments as high risk and warns that leverage amplifies losses. Treat any hedge as a specialized strategy requiring knowledge of collateral, expiration or settlement, liquidity and counterparty terms. Do not use a product merely because its description includes the word “hedge.”
Choose custody deliberately
Custody determines who controls the private keys and which failures you must be able to handle. The following comparison uses the distinctions described by the SEC’s custody guidance.

A brokerage wrapper may simplify trading and tax reporting, but it does not make Bitcoin safe. In its September 9, 2024 bulletin, the SEC described spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products as highly volatile and speculative, noted that they involve fees and warned that investors can lose money.
Questions to ask before moving coins
- Who can authorize a withdrawal?
- What happens if the provider is hacked, insolvent or temporarily offline?
- How quickly can you withdraw, and are there stated limits or review delays?
- Where is the recovery information stored, and who could find it?
- What happens if the phone, computer or physical wallet is lost, damaged or stolen?
- Which fees and transfer costs apply, and can you verify them before signing a transaction?
Moving from an exchange to self-custody trades platform dependence for key-management responsibility. Moving into an ETP trades direct-coin operations for a securities account and product structure. Neither move eliminates price risk.
What a hardware wallet can and cannot protect
A hardware wallet is a physical device intended to keep private keys in a dedicated environment. It addresses a custody and device-security problem: reducing the need to expose keys to an ordinary internet-connected computer. It cannot prevent Bitcoin from losing value, guarantee exchange liquidity, recover a phrase that was destroyed, or stop a user from approving a fraudulent transaction.

The SEC’s December 12, 2025 bulletin warns that physical wallet devices can be lost, damaged or stolen, potentially causing permanent loss. The recovery procedure is therefore as important as the device itself.

Safer setup and recovery practices
- Obtain the device through a trustworthy channel and inspect packaging and instructions for signs of tampering.
- Initialize it yourself and generate the recovery information on the device or its documented setup flow. Never accept a phrase sent by email, printed on a card by someone else or displayed on a website.
- Write the recovery information accurately and store it offline in a location protected from casual access, fire, water and theft. Do not photograph it or place it in cloud storage.
- Set a strong device PIN and keep it separate from the recovery information. Do not reuse a PIN or password used for email or an exchange.
- Test a small receiving and sending transaction only after checking the address and network on the device display. Keep records of what you tested without recording the recovery phrase.
- Plan for loss or incapacity. A trusted person should know that a recovery process exists, while the phrase itself remains protected from unauthorized access.
Never type a recovery phrase into a website, browser extension, form or support chat. Anyone who obtains it can generally control the associated funds.
Secure exchanges and brokerage accounts
Account security cannot offset an oversized position, but it can reduce avoidable theft and unauthorized withdrawals.
- Use a unique, long password stored in a reputable password manager.
- Turn on the strongest available multi-factor authentication and protect the recovery method for that authentication.
- Secure the email account used for financial alerts with its own unique password and multi-factor authentication.
- Enable withdrawal allowlists, address locks, transaction alerts or time delays when the platform offers them.
- Review active sessions, API keys and connected applications; revoke anything you do not recognize.
- Use a current operating system and browser, screen lock and reputable anti-malware protection. Avoid signing in from shared or public computers.
- Confirm support contacts through the provider’s official application or account page, not through an unsolicited message.
During a crash, a request to “verify” a phrase, install remote-control software or send coins to a safe address is a fraud warning. End the conversation and use an independently located official support route.

They may be operationally simpler for someone who already uses a regulated brokerage account, and the wrapper may make recordkeeping or tax reporting easier. That convenience is not protection from Bitcoin’s price movement. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 bulletin specifically characterized spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs as highly volatile and speculative, with fees and the possibility of financial loss.

A practical crash-day checklist
Use this short checklist when prices are moving too quickly for a long analysis:
- Stop new leverage and cancel unplanned margin or derivatives orders.
- Check that rent, debt, taxes and emergency cash are funded outside Bitcoin.
- Calculate total exposure, including borrowed funds and ETP holdings.
- Read the written position limit and time horizon you set before the crisis.
- Confirm account security, active sessions, withdrawal controls and device updates.
- Do not disclose recovery information or follow unsolicited support instructions.
- Verify every address, network, amount and fee before a transfer.
- Allow a cooling-off period for any action not required by a genuine cash or collateral need.
- Document the reason for the decision and the resulting balance.
After the market stabilizes
Review the plan rather than judging it solely by the next price movement. Measure whether the position stayed within the loss capacity you set, whether emergency liquidity remained available, whether leverage was avoided and whether you could access the chosen custody arrangement. Update passwords, authentication, recovery instructions and beneficiary or incapacity plans if the review reveals a weakness.
Review fees and protections before moving between an exchange, self-custody wallet and ETP. If taxes, debt or a business account are involved, obtain advice appropriate to your jurisdiction; the correct treatment depends on facts that a general Bitcoin checklist cannot determine.

Answers to common crash questions
Should I sell everything?
There is no evidence-based universal sell instruction. A full or partial sale may be appropriate when the position threatens essential obligations, exceeds your written maximum or carries leverage you cannot safely maintain. If none of those conditions applies, follow the plan rather than a headline.
Should I buy the dip?
Only a plan that leaves emergency cash intact, uses no leverage and keeps a potential total loss within your capacity can justify an additional purchase. A falling price alone is not proof that the bottom has arrived.
Does moving Bitcoin to a hardware wallet make it safe?
It can reduce dependence on an exchange and help protect private keys from some online threats. It does not protect against a price decline, user error, stolen recovery information or loss, damage or theft of the device and its recovery materials.
Is self-custody always better than an exchange?
No. Self-custody gives you control of the keys but also makes you responsible for backups, security and recovery. An exchange may be simpler to operate but introduces platform, withdrawal and insolvency exposure. Choose the arrangement whose risks you can manage reliably.
