Google Play’s automatic app archiving can reclaim storage by removing the installed parts of apps you rarely use while leaving their icons and app data on your phone. To change the global setting, open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Settings > General, then switch Automatically archive apps on or off. To protect one app, use Settings > Apps > [app] > Manage app if unused and turn that control off. Archived apps can be restored by tapping their dimmed icon or by opening their listing in Google Play.
What automatic app archiving does
Archiving is a storage-management feature for Android apps that you are not using regularly. It is different from uninstalling: Android removes the installed app software, its permissions and temporary files, and stops notifications, but keeps the app’s icon and data so you can reinstall the app later.
Google Play Help describes the behavior this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” The icon normally remains visible on the home screen or in the app list, but it appears faded and carries an archive indicator. Because the software is no longer installed, the app cannot open until it has been restored.
Retaining data does not mean that every kind of content will be available without the app. Google’s documentation confirms that app data is retained, but it does not define how every app handles downloaded files, offline content, caches, accounts or cloud-synchronized information. An app may require a fresh sign-in or a new download after restoration, depending on how that app stores its data.

Decide whether archiving fits your phone
Automatic archiving is useful when storage is tight and you want to keep a collection of apps available without deleting their icons. It is less suitable for apps that must deliver alerts, perform background work or remain immediately usable. Archiving stops notifications, so a messaging, security, travel, health or authentication app may be a poor candidate even if you open it infrequently.
Android distinguishes storage from memory. Storage is the space used for items such as apps, photos and music; memory is the working space used while Android and programs run. Archiving targets storage. It is not a RAM upgrade and should not be presented as a guaranteed way to make a phone faster.
- Use automatic archiving when recovering storage is more important than keeping every rarely used app ready to launch.
- Leave it off when you need predictable notification delivery or when reinstalling apps over a slow or limited connection would be inconvenient.
- Protect individual apps that must stay installed, even if you enable the global feature.
- Do not expect a fixed amount of space or a fixed period of inactivity before an app is archived; Google’s published help does not specify either.
Turn automatic app archiving on or off
The following global path is reported by Android Central’s how-to guide. Google confirms that automatic archiving is an opt-in Play Store feature, but the accessible Google help article does not show this complete menu sequence. Labels and placement can change with Play Store releases, Android versions and device manufacturers.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings, then open General.
- Find Automatically archive apps.
- Switch the setting on to allow Play Store to archive eligible unused apps, or switch it off to stop automatic archiving.
Turning the control on is permission for the feature; it is not a command to archive every app immediately. Google does not publish a universal inactivity threshold or promise that a specific number of apps will be archived. The amount of storage recovered therefore varies by device, app and usage history.
If the global switch is missing
First confirm that you are changing settings in the Play Store rather than the phone’s general Settings app. Then update Google Play Store if an update is offered, restart the phone and look again under Settings > General. If the option still does not appear, your Android version, device hardware, Play Store release or regional configuration may not support the control. Google’s help notes that some archiving functions require Android 15 or later and that some require supporting hardware; it does not provide a universal device list.

Keep one app from being archived automatically
You can exempt an individual app without disabling automatic archiving for everything else. Google documents this as the per-app Manage app if unused control.
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps. On some phones you may need to open an app-management or see-all-apps list first.
- Select the app you want to keep installed.
- Turn off Manage app if unused.
With that control off, Android will not automatically archive the selected app. Manual archiving remains available, so the exemption is not a permanent lock against removing the app’s installed software. If the wording differs, look for the app’s unused-app, pause-app or archiving control; manufacturer interfaces can rename settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich apps should you exempt?
- Apps that must notify you: archiving stops notifications until restoration.
- Apps used for sign-in or verification: keeping the installed copy avoids an urgent reinstall when you need an account code.
- Apps with important offline material: retained data is documented, but Google does not guarantee that every downloaded item will survive an app-specific storage design.
- Apps needed without a connection: restoration requires downloading the software again, so an archived copy may be unusable during travel or an outage.
Manually archive a single app
Manual archiving gives you control over the exact app instead of waiting for automatic management. Google’s documented route is available only on supported devices, and some steps require Android 15 or later.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps and select the app.
- Choose Archive if that action is shown.
- Confirm the action if Android asks.
Afterward, the app icon becomes dimmed and displays an archive indicator. The app’s installed software, permissions and temporary files are removed, and notifications stop. The icon and app data remain so that the app can be reinstalled later.
When Archive is not offered
A missing Archive button does not necessarily mean that the app is malfunctioning. Manual archiving can be limited by Android version, device hardware, app support or the phone maker’s software. Check the Android version in Settings > About phone, install available system updates and verify that the device meets the support requirements. If the control remains unavailable, you can still use ordinary uninstalling or the Play Store’s automatic feature when those options are supported.

Restore an archived app
Restoration downloads the app software again while using the retained icon and data. You have several entry points.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Restore from the icon
- Find the faded app icon on the home screen or in the app drawer.
- Tap the icon.
- Approve the reinstall or download prompt if it appears.
- Wait for Google Play to download and install the app, then open it normally.
Restore from Settings
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the archived app.
- Open its App info page and choose the restore or reinstall action shown.
Restore from Google Play
- Open the Play Store and search for the app, or open its existing store listing.
- Tap the install or restore control.
- Allow the download to finish before launching the app.
The Play Store app must be installed, and the archived app must still be available in that store. If the phone lacks enough free storage, Android prompts you to manage storage before reinstalling. Free space may be needed for both the downloaded package and temporary installation files, so deleting or moving other content can be necessary.
If the icon has disappeared
Google notes that a missing icon may indicate that the app was deleted rather than archived. Search the Play Store for the app and check whether its listing offers installation. If the developer has removed the app, it is no longer available through that store and the normal archive-restore route cannot complete.
Automatic archiving, manual archiving and uninstalling compared
| Option | How it starts | What is removed | What remains | How you return to the app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic archiving | Play Store opt-in manages eligible unused apps | Installed software, permissions and temporary files; notifications stop | Icon and app data | Tap the faded icon or use the app’s Settings or Play Store page |
| Per-app exclusion | Turn off Manage app if unused for one app | Nothing immediately; it prevents automatic archiving for that app | The installed app remains available | Use the app normally; manual archiving is still possible |
| Manual archiving | Choose Settings > Apps > [app] > Archive on a supported device | Installed software, permissions and temporary files; notifications stop | Icon and app data | Use the icon, App info page or Play Store listing |
| Uninstalling | You explicitly remove the app | The app installation is removed; retention of app data depends on the uninstall process and app | Not guaranteed to leave an archived icon | Install again from the Play Store if the listing is available |
Archiving and uninstalling therefore should not be treated as identical. Archiving is designed to preserve a recognizable route back to the app, while uninstalling is a deliberate removal action whose retained-data behavior can vary.
Storage expectations and limits
Archiving can free the space occupied by an app’s installed software and temporary files, but neither Google nor the reviewed documentation provides a standard storage-saving figure. App sizes differ, and the amount recovered can change after updates or as an app creates new temporary files. Do not promise a particular number of megabytes or gigabytes.

Because archiving stops notifications and removes permissions, the archived app cannot continue background tasks. This can change how another app behaves if it depends on the archived app, such as a launcher shortcut, share target or authentication helper. Restore the app before troubleshooting a workflow that suddenly lacks that integration.

The setting is enabled, but nothing has been archived
Automatic archiving does not guarantee immediate action. Google does not publish a universal inactivity period or quantity of storage that triggers it. Continue using the phone normally, and protect critical apps with the per-app setting if you cannot risk their removal.
An app still appears installed after you turned the feature on
Only apps that Android and Play Store consider eligible can be archived. The global switch is permission for the feature, not a manual command. If you need to remove one app now, use the manual Archive action when the device offers it.
Notifications stopped
Check whether the app icon is dimmed or marked as archived. An archived app does not send notifications. Tap the icon or restore it from App info or its Play Store page, then allow the installation to finish.

- Confirm that Google Play Store is installed and working.
- Check that the app still has a listing in the store.
- Free enough storage for the download and installation.
- Use a reliable internet connection and retry from the app icon, Settings or Play Store.
The app asks for setup again
Google confirms retention of app data but does not define every app’s treatment of accounts, offline files or downloaded content. Complete any sign-in or in-app download that the restored app requests. If important content was supplied by the app’s cloud service, its availability depends on that service rather than on the Play Store toggle.

The app cannot be found
Look in the app drawer, search Settings under Apps and search Google Play. If no archived entry or store listing exists, the app may have been deleted or may no longer be distributed through that store.
Android and device compatibility
Google’s help pages state that some archiving steps work only on Android 15 and newer, while other steps require supporting hardware. The documentation reviewed does not list every compatible phone or tablet. As a result, two devices with similar Play Store versions can expose different controls.
Before changing a setting, note the Android release under Settings > About phone and install available system updates. If the global toggle, per-app control or manual Archive action is absent, use the controls your device exposes rather than assuming the feature is broken. Device manufacturers can also alter the exact wording or location of app-management screens.

- Check available storage in the phone’s storage settings and identify whether apps are a significant contributor.
- Enable Automatically archive apps in Play Store only if losing notifications and immediate access from rarely used apps is acceptable.
- Immediately exempt apps that handle verification, safety alerts, travel information, health records or other time-sensitive tasks.
- When you deliberately need to reclaim space from one app, use the manual Archive action if your device supports it.
- Before restoring an app, make sure the Play Store can access its listing and that the phone has enough free storage.
- After restoration, open the app and verify sign-in, notifications and any offline content you depend on.
This approach keeps the global feature focused on genuinely infrequent apps while preserving installed access to the services that must remain available.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Automatic archiving is an opt-in Play Store setting reached, according to the reported secondary path, through Profile picture > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps.
- Archiving removes installed software, permissions and temporary files, stops notifications, and keeps the icon and app data.
- Turn off Manage app if unused in an app’s Settings page to exclude it from automatic archiving.
- Manual archiving and some restoration controls depend on Android version and device hardware.
- Restoration requires the Play Store, an available app listing and sufficient free storage.
- Google does not establish a fixed inactivity period or guaranteed storage saving, so avoid relying on a specific number.
