To stop your Mac from automatically sending diagnostic reports to Apple, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll to Analytics & Improvements, and turn off Share Mac Analytics. To stop analytics being shared with software developers, turn off Share with app developers as a separate step. These switches do not form one master privacy control: iCloud analytics, Siri and Dictation improvement data, and assistive voice feature audio have their own settings.
The instructions below explain what each control covers, how to inspect reports already stored on the Mac, and what Apple says about the information collected and its retention.
Find the analytics controls in macOS
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
- Scroll down to Analytics & Improvements. It may not be visible until you scroll through the Privacy & Security page.
- Review each switch independently rather than assuming one change controls every type of sharing.
Apple’s current Mac privacy guide describes this area as the place to manage diagnostic, usage, Siri and Dictation, iCloud, and assistive voice improvement choices. The wording can differ slightly between macOS releases, but the current settings label is System Settings, not the older “System Preferences.”
If you are helping another Mac user, first confirm which data flow they want to stop. “Mac analytics,” “developer analytics,” “iCloud analytics,” and “voice improvement” are related labels, but they are not interchangeable. A person may want crash diagnostics sent to Apple while declining developer sharing, or may want both disabled while leaving a voice-feature setting unchanged.

What each switch controls
There are several recipients and purposes in Analytics & Improvements. Use this table to decide which choices match your preference.
| Control | Recipient or purpose | Information Apple describes | What turning it off does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share Mac Analytics | Apple’s diagnostic and usage analysis | Crash, freeze, kernel-panic, event, usage, hardware, software, connected-device, and version information | Stops automatic sharing of Mac analytics with Apple |
| Share with app developers | Developers of relevant Apple and third-party apps | Relevant analytics about software and related operation | Stops Apple from sharing the applicable analytics with developers |
| Share iCloud Analytics | Analytics associated with iCloud services | Analytics covered by the iCloud setting, rather than the Mac-only switch | Controls iCloud analytics separately |
| Improve Siri & Dictation | Improvement of Siri and Dictation | Requests, transcripts, and related improvement data; Dictation setup can also ask about audio recordings | Stops participation in this improvement program |
| Improve Assistive Voice Features | Improvement of assistive voice features | Audio or related feature data covered by that control | Stops sharing for this separate voice-feature program |
The table describes separate decisions, not a hierarchy. Turning off Share Mac Analytics does not, by itself, turn off iCloud analytics, developer sharing, Siri and Dictation improvement, or assistive voice feature sharing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Recipient matters as much as data type
Share Mac Analytics is primarily about sending the Mac’s diagnostic and usage information to Apple. Share with app developers addresses a different onward recipient: developers whose software is covered by the applicable analytics. The distinction is useful when troubleshooting. You can permit Apple to receive diagnostics while declining distribution to developers, or make the opposite choice according to your comfort level.
The voice controls also involve a different kind of material. Improve Siri & Dictation concerns requests, transcripts, and related improvement data, while Dictation setup may separately ask about audio recordings. Assistive voice improvements are another program and may involve audio or related feature data. Do not infer the setting for one program from the state of another.
Turn off Mac analytics and developer sharing
Stop automatic reports to Apple
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, then scroll to Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn Share Mac Analytics off.
This changes the preference for future automatic sending. It does not erase analytics files that are already present on the Mac; use Console if you want to inspect what is currently stored.
If the switch is already off, no additional confirmation is required. The setting can be changed again later, so you can temporarily enable it while diagnosing a problem and disable it afterward. Apple describes analytics sharing as opt-in and says the choice can be changed at any time.
Stop sharing with app developers
- Remain in Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn Share with app developers off separately.
This second switch matters if you are comfortable sending diagnostic information to Apple but do not want applicable analytics passed to developers. Conversely, leaving it on while disabling Share Mac Analytics does not recreate the same setting: the controls have different recipients and purposes.
For a work or family Mac, record which switch you changed and why. A later user may see reports in Console and assume a setting was ignored, when the reports are simply local files created before the preference changed. Checking the exact label avoids that misunderstanding.
Change the choice later
Apple says analytics sharing is opt-in and can be changed at any time. Return to the same panel and move the relevant switch; there is no requirement to make all analytics choices together.

Manage iCloud, Siri, Dictation, and assistive voice choices
iCloud analytics
Look for Share iCloud Analytics in the same Analytics & Improvements area. Decide on it independently from Share Mac Analytics. Apple’s privacy settings guide lists iCloud analytics as a distinct control, so disabling Mac analytics should not be treated as an iCloud opt-out.
This separation is important for people who use several Apple devices or iCloud services. Turning off the Mac-only switch does not tell you whether iCloud analytics remains enabled; read the iCloud switch itself and set it to your preference.
Siri and Dictation improvement
To change the Siri and Dictation improvement preference, use the Improve Siri & Dictation switch in Analytics & Improvements. Apple’s dedicated guidance, dated June 2, 2026, explains this setting in Turn Improve Siri & Dictation on or off.
Dictation setup can present a separate question about sharing audio recordings. If you do not want to share those recordings, choose Not Now when the prompt appears. Choosing Not Now addresses that setup prompt; it is still worth checking the Improve Siri & Dictation switch afterward because the audio prompt and the broader improvement preference are distinct choices.
A useful way to review these options is to ask two questions: do you want to contribute requests or transcripts to improvement, and do you want to share audio recordings when Dictation asks? The answers can differ. Set the broader improvement switch and handle the audio prompt separately rather than assuming one answer changes both.

Assistive voice features
If your Mac shows Improve Assistive Voice Features, review it separately. This control concerns assistive voice features and can involve audio or related feature data. Turning off Share Mac Analytics does not automatically answer this choice; set it according to whether you want to contribute data to improving those features.
What Mac analytics reports can contain
Apple says Mac analytics may include details about:
- Crashes, application freezes, and kernel panics.
- Events such as whether waking the Mac succeeded.
- Usage of Apple and third-party software, hardware, and services.
- The Mac’s hardware and software specifications.
- Connected devices.
- Operating-system and application versions.
These categories are diagnostic and operational information, not a transcript of everything you do on the Mac. However, the categories can still reveal details about your device, installed software, connected hardware, and how services operate. If you voluntarily add a description of what happened to a report, Apple advises leaving out personal information.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, a useful description can identify that the Mac froze while waking, note the approximate time, and describe the visible symptom. It should not include names, email addresses, account identifiers, document text, or other personal details. Keeping the description technical gives support staff a clearer symptom without unnecessarily adding identifying material.

Apple describes several privacy protections for generated reports: personal data is either not logged, handled with techniques such as differential privacy, or removed before reports are sent. Those statements are Apple’s description of its handling; they should not be read as a guarantee that every possible report contains no identifying context.
The categories also explain why a report can be useful even when you did not type anything into a feedback form. A crash record, wake event, software version, or connected-device detail can help characterize a failure. If you do not want that automatic contribution, disable Share Mac Analytics and review the other switches independently.

Inspect reports with Console before changing anything
macOS includes the Console app, which lets you see analytics information held on the Mac. Apple says Console can display analytics even when you have not enabled automatic report sending, so inspecting the list is useful when you want to understand what is being generated rather than what is being transmitted.
- Open Console from Applications or with Spotlight.
- In the Console sidebar, select Mac Analytics Data.
- Browse the available reports and open an item to examine its contents.
- To identify a send event, look for a log message whose Process column contains SubmitDiagInfo.
Console is an inspection tool, not a replacement for the switches in System Settings. Finding a report proves that analytics information exists locally; it does not, by itself, prove that the report was transmitted. Conversely, a SubmitDiagInfo message is the clue Apple documents for identifying a send event.
Visibility depends on your account privileges. An administrator can view all reports. A non-administrator can view User Reports only. Therefore, an empty or shorter list in a standard account does not necessarily mean that no system analytics exist.
How long reports remain on the Mac
Apple states: “Your Mac keeps analytics information for one month after it is generated, then deletes the information.” This is the retention period Apple specifies for locally kept analytics information; it is not a promise that every copy held elsewhere follows the same schedule.

Use the report’s details and Console’s process messages to understand timing rather than treating the presence of a file as evidence of a recent transmission.
What happens when the Mac is offline
If the Mac cannot connect to the internet, Apple says analytics data is saved and sent when the Mac reconnects. Turning off Share Mac Analytics before reconnection prevents the automatic-sharing preference from remaining enabled for future sends; it does not turn the offline period into a separate analytics category. If you need to know whether a send occurred, check Console for SubmitDiagInfo messages.
This behavior explains why a Mac can accumulate analytics while traveling or disconnected and then communicate soon after going online. If timing matters, change the setting before reconnecting and inspect Console afterward. Existing locally stored data and future automatic sending are separate questions.

Analytics across multiple Apple devices
When you opt in on multiple devices signed in to the same iCloud account, Apple says some usage data about Apple apps may be correlated across those devices through end-to-end encrypted syncing. Apple describes this process as designed so that it does not identify the user to Apple. This explanation applies to the cross-device usage correlation Apple describes; it does not merge the separate switches in Analytics & Improvements into one control.
Review each Mac and each relevant device rather than assuming one change propagates everywhere. The fact that devices share an iCloud account does not turn Share Mac Analytics, Share iCloud Analytics, developer sharing, and voice-improvement choices into a single preference.
Choose settings by the data flow you want
Use the following decision sequence instead of treating analytics as an all-or-nothing feature:
- No automatic Mac diagnostics to Apple: turn off Share Mac Analytics.
- No applicable analytics to software developers: turn off Share with app developers, whether or not you keep Apple sharing enabled.
- No iCloud analytics: turn off Share iCloud Analytics independently.
- No Siri and Dictation improvement contribution: turn off Improve Siri & Dictation and choose Not Now if Dictation asks about sharing audio recordings.
- No assistive voice improvement contribution: turn off Improve Assistive Voice Features.
- Review existing files: use Console’s Mac Analytics Data view and check for SubmitDiagInfo messages when you need to understand transmission activity.
This approach lets you keep one category enabled for troubleshooting or product improvement while declining another category with a different recipient or data type.

You want Apple diagnostics off but are not reviewing voice settings
Turn off Share Mac Analytics. Then deliberately inspect the remaining controls instead of assuming they changed. In particular, check Share iCloud Analytics, Improve Siri & Dictation, and Improve Assistive Voice Features if those data flows matter to you.

You want developer sharing off but Apple diagnostics on
Leave Share Mac Analytics enabled and turn off Share with app developers. These settings address different recipients, so this combination is supported by the separate controls.
You want no voice improvement participation
Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation, choose Not Now if Dictation asks about audio recordings, and turn off Improve Assistive Voice Features. This handles the voice-related choices separately from Mac and iCloud analytics.
You are investigating a past transmission
Open Console, select Mac Analytics Data, and look for SubmitDiagInfo in the Process column. Remember that standard accounts see User Reports only, and that locally retained analytics are deleted after one month according to Apple.
Troubleshooting the settings
Analytics & Improvements is not visible
Open Privacy & Security and scroll farther down the sidebar or page. Apple places Analytics & Improvements below the other privacy categories, so it may not appear in the first view of the window.
You turned off Mac analytics but still see other switches
That is expected. Share Mac Analytics, Share with app developers, Share iCloud Analytics, Improve Siri & Dictation, and Improve Assistive Voice Features are separate controls. Review the specific switch that corresponds to the data flow you want to stop.

You still see reports in Console
Console can display analytics information even when automatic sending is disabled. Existing reports therefore do not prove that the current Share Mac Analytics preference is on. Check the setting in System Settings, then use the Process column to look for SubmitDiagInfo when investigating a send event.
A standard account cannot see every report
Apple limits non-administrator accounts to User Reports in Console. An administrator account is required to view all reports.
You added personal information to a report description
Apple advises not including personal information in descriptions of what happened. For future reports, describe the technical symptom without names, addresses, account identifiers, document contents, or other identifying details.
