If a stock is removed from the NSE’s futures and options (F&O) segment, an open position is not necessarily cancelled immediately. In an ordinary eligibility-based phase-out, existing unexpired contracts may continue to trade until their individual expiries, while new expiry-month contracts stop being issued. The exchange circular for that specific stock sets the schedule. Check it and confirm with the broker holding your position before deciding how to exit or manage it.

What happens to my open F&O position if a stock is removed from F&O?

For an ordinary phase-out, the NSE may allow existing unexpired contracts to trade until expiry. That can include futures and options contracts in expiry months already listed when the phase-out begins. The NSE’s equity-derivatives selection criteria also say that new strikes may be introduced in existing contract months. That does not mean the exchange will issue a fresh expiry month after the phase-out starts.

The practical distinction is between the contract you already hold and a contract that would normally be listed later. If you hold a listed April contract, for example, the exchange notice may permit that April contract to remain available until its stated expiry. It does not follow that a new July expiry will be created after the phase-out. An option strike added within an already permitted month is also not the same thing as adding another expiry month.

There is no single last-trading date that applies to every excluded stock. The relevant NSE circular identifies the security, the contract months that remain available, and when contracts will no longer be available. Read that notice rather than relying on a general announcement, an old article, or another stock’s schedule.

There is an important exception: the NSE says it may compulsorily close all derivative positions in an underlying in specified circumstances, including when it considers continued contracts detrimental to market integrity and safety. So an open contract is not guaranteed to remain tradable until expiry in every case. A compulsory-close-out notice can override the ordinary expectation that an unexpired contract will continue.

“Excluded” therefore describes a change in the security’s eligibility for new F&O listings; it is not, by itself, a statement that your account has already been squared off. The notice and your broker’s implementation determine what you can actually do.

First determine which event applies

A temporary market-wide position limit (MWPL) ban, an ordinary F&O phase-out, and a compulsory close-out are different events. Check the NSE notice or status for the specific stock and ask your broker how it applies to your account.

Event What it means for trading Timing question Where to check
Temporary MWPL ban Clients and trading members should trade only to decrease positions through offsetting trades during the ban. When will the ban be lifted, and does a later notice change the status? NSE position limits and your broker’s position and order controls.
Ordinary eligibility-based phase-out Fresh expiry-month contracts stop being issued; existing unexpired contracts may continue until their individual expiries. The security-specific circular controls the schedule. Which expiry months remain, and on what date will no contracts be available? The NSE exclusion circular for the stock and your broker.
Exceptional compulsory close-out The NSE may require derivative positions in the underlying to be closed; do not assume ordinary expiry treatment applies. What deadline and handling instructions does the exchange or broker specify? The relevant NSE notice and your broker’s instructions.

An MWPL ban is a temporary restriction on increasing positions, not the same as permanently removing a stock from F&O. The NSE’s position-limits information describes the reduction-only restriction during a ban. Do not treat a ban notice alone as proof that the stock has entered a phase-out.

In a ban, an existing long or short position is not automatically cancelled merely because new positions cannot be added. The permitted action is a trade that offsets or reduces the position. If the stock is in an ordinary phase-out instead, the key question is whether your particular expiry remains listed and tradable. If the exchange announces compulsory closure, the key question becomes how and when the broker must carry out that instruction.

How to check and manage the position

  1. Identify the exact contract

From your broker’s account, note the underlying stock, whether the position is a future or an option, the expiry month, and the quantity. If it is an option, include the strike and whether it is a call or put when asking the broker about the contract. These details help distinguish the contract you hold from later expiry months that may no longer be issued.

Record whether the position is long or short as well. A broker needs the complete contract identity to tell you whether an offsetting order is available. Do not assume that an order in the same stock but a different expiry, strike, or option type will reduce the position you intend to manage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Find the stock-specific NSE notice

Look for the NSE circular naming the security and read its effective date, permitted contract months, and stated final availability date. A broad statement that a stock is “excluded” is not enough to determine the status of your particular expiry.

Check the notice’s date and the security name carefully. A circular may list several securities together, but the dates and contract months in that circular apply only as stated there. A later circular can also provide a different schedule for another security. Save or record the notice you relied on so that you can refer to the exact wording when speaking with the broker.

  3. Check whether trading is restricted or a close-out is required

Confirm whether the notice concerns an MWPL ban, an ordinary phase-out, or compulsory closure. For a ban, the NSE says trading should only reduce positions through offsetting trades. If the notice specifies compulsory closure, contact your broker promptly for instructions; ordinary phase-out expectations may not apply.

If the notice is an ordinary phase-out, check every expiry month you hold. The fact that one expiry remains available does not establish that a later expiry is available. If the notice is a ban, ask whether your proposed transaction is clearly reducing the existing position rather than increasing exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Confirm order handling with the broker holding the position

Ask whether your exact contract remains available for trading, what order controls apply, and how the broker will handle any exchange-directed close-out. The reviewed NSE materials do not establish one universal account-level workflow or deadline for forced closure, so do not assume every broker uses the same process.

Ask specifically whether the contract is visible in the order screen, whether only closing or offsetting orders are permitted, and whether the broker expects you to place the order yourself or will act on an exchange instruction. Obtain the answer for the exact underlying, expiry, strike, option type, side, and quantity in your account. Keep the broker’s response and the relevant exchange notice together.

  5. Choose what to do based on the contract and notice

You may consider an offsetting trade to reduce or close an available position, or holding an eligible contract subject to its expiry and the terms of the notice. Whether to close or hold is a decision about your own risk and circumstances, not something the exclusion label alone determines. Do not assume an order will be accepted: verify availability and restrictions with the broker first.

For a long position, an offsetting transaction generally means taking the opposite side of the same contract; for a short position, it generally means taking the opposite side to reduce that short. Confirm the mechanics with the broker rather than using a different expiry or strike and assuming it will offset. The exchange notice does not make a holding decision for you, and this article is not a recommendation to hold until expiry or to exit immediately.

  6. Recheck before acting if the status changes

Exchange notices can set security-specific dates, and a later notice may affect the schedule. Recheck the applicable NSE circular and broker position controls before placing an order, especially if the contract is near expiry or a compulsory close-out is announced.

Recheck after a rejected order, a change in the broker’s contract display, or a new exchange announcement. A previously permitted contract can approach its stated final date, and a temporary ban can be distinct from the phase-out status. Use the latest dated information rather than assuming that yesterday’s order permissions still apply.

How to read the dates in an exclusion circular

Three dates or date categories matter most: the date of the circular, the effective date from which new contract availability changes, and the expiry or final-availability dates for the contracts already listed. The circular may also identify several remaining contract months. Those months are not interchangeable: each has its own expiry and may cease to be available at a different time.

Suppose a notice says February, March, and April contracts may trade until their respective expiries and that no contracts will be available from April 29. A holder of the February contract should not read “April 29” as an instruction to hold until that date; the February contract’s own expiry controls its ordinary trading life. Conversely, a holder of a later month should not assume that the same last date applies unless the notice says so. Ask the broker to map the circular’s wording to the exact contract in your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phrase “no contracts will be available” should also be read in context. It describes the exchange’s stated availability for that security from the named date; it is not proof that every account has already been closed or that a broker will use an identical operational process. If a compulsory close-out is separately announced, follow that notice and the broker’s instructions instead.

Dated examples: why one stock’s schedule cannot be copied to another

NSE circular NSE/FAOP/72950, dated February 23, 2026, named HUDCO, PPLPHARMA, TATATECH, and TORNTPOWER. It said existing February, March, and April 2026 contracts could trade until their respective expiries, with no contracts available in those securities from April 29, 2026. This is a dated example of a security-specific schedule, not a current list of excluded stocks. Read the February 23 circular.

That example shows why a holder must identify the expiry month before acting. A person holding a February contract, a person holding a March contract, and a person holding an April contract all held different contracts even though the underlying security was the same. The notice described their continued availability by reference to their respective expiries, not by one universal account deadline.

A later example shows a different schedule. NSE circular NSE/FAOP/73769, dated April 16, 2026, named SAMMAANCAP. It said existing April, May, and June 2026 contracts could trade until their respective expiries, with no contracts available from July 1, 2026. These dates applied to that notice and are not a general rule for other securities. Read the April 16 circular.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two notices should not be blended into a template. The first named four securities and an April 29 availability date; the second named SAMMAANCAP and a July 1 date. If a new notice is issued after these examples, use that newer notice for the named stock and do not present either dated example as a current exclusion list.

Can I still exit my position?

Possibly, but the answer depends on the event type, exact contract, exchange date, and broker controls. During an MWPL ban, the NSE describes trading as limited to decreasing positions through offsetting trades. In an ordinary phase-out, an existing contract may remain tradable until its individual expiry, subject to the notice and normal order availability. Under compulsory closure, the exchange or broker may direct a different process.

Do not interpret “may continue to trade” as a guarantee that every attempted order will execute. It describes permitted contract availability under the ordinary phase-out framework. Your broker may have account-level controls, and the market may not accept an order at the price or time you choose. Confirm the order rules before relying on an exit plan.

What if I want to hold until expiry?

Holding is not automatically required and is not automatically prohibited. An ordinary phase-out may permit an unexpired contract to trade until its stated expiry, but the NSE also reserves the power to compulsorily close derivative positions in specified circumstances. A later notice can therefore change the assumption that the contract will remain open.

If you are considering holding, confirm the expiry month, the notice’s language, and whether the broker will permit the position to remain open. Ask what happens if the exchange announces compulsory closure before expiry. The exclusion itself is not an investment recommendation, and neither holding nor closing removes the need to understand the contract terms and your own risk.

What happens to new contracts and new strikes?

Once an eligibility-based phase-out begins, no fresh expiry-month contracts are issued for the excluded stock. This limits the creation of later contract months even though existing months may remain. The NSE’s criteria state that new strikes may also be introduced in the existing contract months. Thus, “new strikes” and “new expiries” are separate concepts.

A new strike in an existing month does not give you a new later-month contract. Nor does the existence of a strike in the trading interface prove that every expiry month remains available. Always match the underlying, month, strike, call or put designation, and position side to the stock-specific notice.

Can the stock return to F&O?

Re-entry is not immediate. Under the NSE’s stated criteria, an excluded stock is not considered for re-inclusion for one year. It must then meet the eligibility criteria for six consecutive months, and reintroduction remains subject to exchange action and SEBI approval. That possibility does not change the expiry or trading status of a contract you currently hold; use the applicable notice for that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The one-year waiting condition means that a possible future return should not be used as a reason to assume that a current contract will be extended. The six consecutive months of eligibility are an additional condition, and SEBI approval remains part of the process. There is no basis for treating re-entry as automatic or as a timetable for managing today’s open position.

Common operational pitfalls

  • Confusing a ban with an exclusion: An MWPL ban is a temporary reduction-only state. It is not proof that the stock has permanently left the F&O segment.
  • Using another stock’s dates: The HUDCO, PPLPHARMA, TATATECH, and TORNTPOWER example cannot be used to determine SAMMAANCAP’s dates, and neither example supplies a universal schedule.
  • Ignoring the expiry month: “The stock remains tradable” is incomplete. Your specific month, and for options your strike and call-or-put type, must be checked.
  • Assuming cancellation: An ordinary exclusion does not by itself establish that an open position has already been cancelled.
  • Assuming guaranteed expiry trading: The NSE can order compulsory closure in specified exceptional circumstances.
  • Placing an unverified order: Do not presume that an order in a different month or strike will offset the position you hold, or that the broker will accept an order after a restriction takes effect.
  • Relying on a universal broker deadline: The NSE materials do not set one account-level forced-close workflow for every broker. Ask the broker holding your position.
  • Treating re-entry as immediate: The one-year waiting period, six consecutive months of eligibility, exchange action, and SEBI approval all matter.
  • Assuming a dated example is current: The February and April 2026 notices illustrate how schedules work; they are not current exclusion lists for every security.

A practical confirmation checklist

Before placing or cancelling an order, write down the answers to these questions:

  1. What is the exact underlying security named in the latest NSE notice?
  2. Is the event an MWPL ban, an ordinary eligibility-based phase-out, or compulsory close-out?
  3. What are the contract month, quantity, position side, and, for an option, strike and call-or-put type?
  4. Which existing expiry months does the notice permit, and what are their respective expiry dates?
  5. From what date will no contracts be available for that security?
  6. Does the notice permit only reducing trades, or does it describe another close-out process?
  7. Does the broker show the exact contract as available for the order you intend to place?
  8. What will the broker do if the exchange later orders compulsory closure?

If any answer is unclear, pause and contact the broker. The purpose of the checklist is to connect the exchange’s security-specific wording with the exact position in your account, not to substitute a generic rule for the applicable notice.

What not to assume

  • Do not assume every open contract is cancelled as soon as exclusion is announced.
  • Do not assume every contract will remain tradable until expiry; exceptional compulsory closure is possible.
  • Do not treat an MWPL ban as permanent removal from the derivatives segment.
  • Do not infer your contract’s last available date from a circular for a different stock.
  • Do not assume your broker’s close-out process or deadline without confirming it for your account and contract.
  • Do not assume a new strike means a new expiry month has been created.
  • Do not assume a possible future re-entry extends, rolls over, or preserves your current contract.
  • Do not treat the exclusion label as an instruction to hold or exit; it is a status that must be applied to your contract and circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NSE cancel my open futures or options contract immediately when the stock is excluded?

Not necessarily. In an ordinary eligibility-based phase-out, existing unexpired contracts may be permitted to trade until their individual expiries. The stock-specific NSE circular controls the schedule. The exchange can, however, order compulsory closure in specified exceptional circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I still exit an open position?

It may be possible, subject to the event type, the contract’s expiry month, the NSE notice, and your broker’s order controls. During an MWPL ban, trading should reduce positions through offsetting trades. Confirm that the exact contract is available before placing an order.

Is an MWPL ban the same as removing a stock from F&O?

No. An MWPL ban is a temporary reduction-only restriction. An eligibility-based exclusion is a phase-out in which new expiry-month contracts stop being issued while existing unexpired contracts may remain available under the notice.

How do I find the last date for my contract?

Read the latest NSE circular naming the security. Identify the permitted contract months and each contract’s stated expiry or availability language, then ask the broker to apply those dates to your exact position. Do not copy a date from another stock’s notice.

What details should I give my broker?

Provide the underlying stock, future or option designation, expiry month, quantity, and position side. For an option, also provide the strike and whether it is a call or put. Ask whether the contract remains tradable, whether only reducing orders are permitted, and how any compulsory close-out will be handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can NSE add option strikes after the stock begins its phase-out?

The NSE’s selection criteria say new strikes may be introduced in existing contract months. That does not create a new expiry month, and it does not mean every later expiry will be listed.

What if NSE announces compulsory closure?

Do not rely on ordinary phase-out treatment. Read the relevant notice and contact the broker promptly for the account-level instructions and deadline. The reviewed NSE materials do not establish one universal workflow for every broker.

Can the stock come back into F&O?

Possibly, but not immediately. NSE says an excluded stock is not considered for re-inclusion for one year. It must then satisfy the eligibility criteria for six consecutive months, and reintroduction remains subject to exchange action and SEBI approval.

Should I hold the position until expiry?

The exclusion alone does not answer that question. An existing contract may be permitted to trade until expiry in an ordinary phase-out, but compulsory closure is possible. Holding or closing depends on your circumstances, the exact notice, and broker confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the February, March, April, and July 2026 dates universal?

No. Those dates came from specific NSE circulars: one for HUDCO, PPLPHARMA, TATATECH, and TORNTPOWER, and another for SAMMAANCAP. They illustrate security-specific scheduling and should not be used as a current timetable for another stock.

The Bottom Line

An NSE F&O exclusion is not automatically an immediate cancellation, but it is not a promise that every open contract will run to expiry either. First distinguish an MWPL ban, an ordinary eligibility-based phase-out, and an exceptional compulsory close-out. Then identify your exact future or option, read the latest NSE circular for that security, and confirm the permitted order and close-out process with the broker holding your position. Use the notice’s dates—not a generic rule or another stock’s schedule—before deciding whether to reduce, close, or continue holding the position.
