Amazon privacy controls are split by data type. Use Your Browsing History and recommendation controls for shopping activity, More > Alexa Privacy for voice recordings and Alexa requests, and Amazon’s advertising-preference pages for interest-based ads. Deleting one category does not erase the others, and turning off ad personalization does not remove every advertisement or recommendation.
The menu names below describe Amazon.com and U.S. help pages available in October 2026. Country, device model, Alexa app version, and software updates can change labels or available choices.
Know which Amazon control changes which data
Before changing settings, identify the data you want to review or limit. Amazon treats a product-view record, a recommendation input, an Alexa audio recording, a typed request, and an advertising identifier as separate categories.

Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes the relationship between browsing, cookies, recommendations, and advertising. Its Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs explain voice-history retention and deletion, while the Echo Show advertising help page covers sponsored ads on devices with screens.
Manage Amazon browsing history and recommendations
Review or remove viewed products
- Sign in to the Amazon marketplace you use.
- Open Your Browsing History from your account or the browsing-history link on Amazon’s site.
- Review the products listed as viewed.
- Use the remove or delete control for an individual item you no longer want listed.
This is an account-level shopping control. It addresses the browsing-history list shown by Amazon; it is not the same as clearing the history stored by Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, or another browser. Clear local browser history separately if that is also part of your goal.

Stop a product from influencing recommendations
Amazon documents a separate item-level choice called Use this item for recommendations. On the relevant recommendation-management page, turn that option off for a product you do not want used as a recommendation input. You can also open Improve Your Recommendations to review and manage the information Amazon uses to tailor suggestions.
Removing an item from Your Browsing History and disabling its recommendation use solve different problems. If you want both a cleaner history list and less influence on future suggestions, perform both actions. Amazon’s notice does not promise that clearing the visible history list erases every copy, inference, or downstream recommendation record.

Browse without linking activity to your Amazon account
Amazon states that customers who want to browse without linking browsing history to an account can sign out and block browser cookies. The company’s wording is: “If you want to browse our websites without linking the browsing history to your account, you may do so by signing out of your account and blocking cookies on your browser.” See the Amazon.com Privacy Notice for that guidance.
This is not a consequence-free privacy switch. Amazon warns that rejecting cookies can interfere with the shopping cart, checkout, sign-in, and other services. A practical approach is to use a separate browser profile or private window for occasional unlinked browsing, then allow the cookies required for normal shopping when you need a functioning cart and checkout. A private window does not make activity anonymous to every website or network; it mainly limits what is retained locally after the window closes.

What this setting does not cover
- It does not clear the browser’s own history, cache, downloads, or autofill data.
- It does not change Alexa recordings or requests made from an Echo device.
- It does not opt you out of interest-based advertising.
- It does not remove information held by a third-party service you reached through Amazon.
Review and delete Alexa voice recordings
Open Alexa Privacy
- Open the Alexa mobile app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open Review Alexa History to inspect interactions, or open Manage Your Alexa Data for retention and use controls.
Amazon says that when you speak to Alexa, a recording of what you ask is sent to Amazon’s cloud for processing. The Alexa privacy history can show the audio streamed to the cloud, the transcript, typed requests, and Alexa’s response. It can also help you identify false wakes, when the device activates because it mistakenly detected its wake word. The exact controls can move after an app update, so search the Alexa app for “Alexa Privacy” if the path is different.
Delete a particular interaction
In Review Alexa History, select the date or interaction you want to inspect and use the available delete control. Review the transcript and response before deleting if you need to understand what the device recorded. Deleting an entry from the history view is a request to remove the available Amazon-side voice-history data; it is not a guarantee that every associated record disappears immediately or that a skill developer’s copy is removed.
Choose automatic deletion or no saved recordings
Under Manage Your Alexa Data, Amazon documents these voice-history choices:

The 3-month, 18-month, and 30-day periods are settings described in Amazon’s current Alexa help documentation accessed in October 2026. They are retention rules, not guarantees that every related data type is deleted on the same clock. Amazon says deletion timing can vary by data type and technical process.

Manage use of recordings for improvement
In Manage Your Alexa Data, look for controls governing whether voice recordings may be used to improve Alexa services or develop new features. Turning off that use is different from deleting recordings already stored in your history. If you need both limits, change the improvement-use preference and configure deletion or retention separately.
Understand what can remain after deletion
Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests does not necessarily remove every record associated with an Alexa interaction. It may retain information such as actions taken, products searched for, orders, reminders, preferences, or attachments so related features can continue to work. Deletion can affect personalization and features such as Voice ID.
Information held outside Amazon’s cloud follows a separate path. A third-party skill developer may keep data in its own systems, and an Amazon-side deletion request does not delete that external copy. If an interaction involved a skill, review that skill’s privacy controls or contact its developer for any additional deletion request.
Control Alexa advertising and advertising identifiers
Opt out of Amazon interest-based ads on Alexa
- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy.
- Choose Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Open the advertising or ad-personalization preference and select the available opt-out choice.
This preference limits the use of eligible Alexa information for interest-based advertising. It does not remove ordinary, contextual, or other non-interest-based ads, and it does not automatically disable product recommendations.

Review skill permissions and the advertising ID
For third-party Alexa skills, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Skill Permissions and Ad Preferences. Amazon says you can manage whether an advertising identifier is used for interest-based ads or advertising profiles and can reset the identifier.
Opting out does not make the identifier useless for every purpose. Amazon says an identifier may still support functions such as reducing repeated ads or detecting fraud. Third-party developers and content providers are responsible for honoring the ad preferences that apply to their services, so an opt-out in Amazon’s interface is not a universal command to every independent service.

For advertising choices beyond Alexa, use Your Ads Privacy Choices. Amazon’s country-selection directory is available at https://advertising.amazon.com/legal/ad-preferences. Select your country or marketplace and verify the current options before saving a choice. The available controls and legal terminology can differ by region; do not assume that a U.S. setting has the same scope elsewhere.
Know what happens to ads and recommendations after an opt-out
Amazon says customers may still see ads that are not based on inferred interests and may still receive personalized recommendations. Advertising preference controls regulate a defined use of data; they are not a master switch for every promotional message, home-screen suggestion, or recommendation system.

Manage ads and suggestions on an Echo Show
Devices with a screen have an additional limitation. Amazon’s Echo Show help page states: “You can’t turn off these ads, but you can skip an ad by swiping from right to the left on the screen.” A specific ad can be hidden for 30 days. These sponsored ads remain available even when interest-based advertising is disabled.
- When a sponsored ad appears, swipe from right to left to skip it.
- Use the on-screen option to hide that individual ad when available.
- Expect the hide action to apply for 30 days, not permanently.
- Review the device’s separate home-screen suggestion controls if you want to change non-ad recommendations.
Sponsored ads, interest-based ads, and ordinary home-screen suggestions are different layers. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

A practical privacy cleanup sequence
If you want to review Amazon privacy settings comprehensively, work through the categories rather than searching for one universal switch.
- Start with account browsing. Open Your Browsing History and remove items that should no longer appear.
- Check recommendation inputs. Turn off Use this item for recommendations where appropriate and review Improve Your Recommendations.
- Separate local browser data. Clear the browser history or use its private-browsing controls if local records are part of your concern.
- Review Alexa history. In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History and delete individual interactions you no longer need.
- Set a retention policy. In Manage Your Alexa Data, choose 3 months, 18 months, or not to save recordings, understanding the transcript and typed-request rule for the last option.
- Limit improvement use. Review the setting for using recordings to improve services or develop features.
- Check skill-level controls. Open Manage Skill Permissions and Ad Preferences, review connected skills, and reset or limit the advertising identifier where offered.
- Choose the correct advertising marketplace. Open Your Ads Privacy Choices through Amazon’s country directory and save the choice that matches your location.
- Review screens separately. If you use an Echo Show, configure suggestions and use skip or hide controls for sponsored ads; do not expect all sponsored ads to disappear.
Troubleshooting common privacy-setting problems
The Alexa menu is missing
Amazon changes app labels and device menus over time. Update the Alexa app, confirm that you are signed in to the intended Amazon account, and search within the app for Alexa Privacy, Review Alexa History, or Manage Your Alexa Data. Device software and country settings can expose a different sequence.
An interaction still appears after deletion
Allow for processing time and refresh the history view. Amazon notes that deletion timing varies by data type and technical process. Also check whether you are viewing a related transcript, typed request, or response rather than the audio entry you intended to remove.
Alexa behaves differently after recordings are not saved
Amazon warns that deleting voice data or choosing not to save recordings can affect personalization and features such as Voice ID. Recheck the retention and improvement-use choices if a feature you rely on changes.

Blocking cookies can prevent cart, checkout, sign-in, and other Amazon functions from working. Restore the cookies required by Amazon for normal shopping, or use a separate browser profile for unlinked browsing so that privacy experimentation does not disrupt your main shopping session.
Ads continue after opting out
Continuing ads are expected: Amazon distinguishes interest-based ads from non-interest-based ads, and Echo Show sponsored ads cannot be turned off. Confirm that you changed the preference for the correct country, then use the device’s skip or 30-day hide control for an individual Echo Show ad.
A skill still has information about you
Amazon-side controls do not delete information stored by a skill developer or another service outside Amazon’s cloud. Identify the skill involved and use its own privacy or deletion process where available.
What these controls can and cannot promise
- They can remove items from the visible browsing-history list, change recommendation inputs, delete eligible Alexa history, set automatic voice-data deletion, limit certain recording uses, and opt out of defined interest-based advertising.
- They cannot guarantee immediate removal of every related record, erase a third-party developer’s independent copy, stop every ad, or disable every recommendation.
- They may change functionality. Cookie blocking can disrupt shopping; deleting Alexa data can reduce personalization or affect Voice ID; disabling interest-based ads leaves other advertising and recommendation systems available.
Use the control that matches the data category and keep the scope of each setting in mind. Amazon’s official documentation is the best reference when an app update, device model, or marketplace presents different labels.
