If family members use the same Amazon login, treat the account’s purchase history, browsing history, payment options and profile information as potentially visible to anyone who can sign in. For adults who want more separation, the stronger option is to keep separate Amazon accounts and link them through Amazon Family for eligible shared benefits. That still shares some household features, so review Alexa and Amazon Photos settings separately.
First decide whether you need a shared login or shared benefits
A shared login is one account used by multiple people. Its account-level history and settings are unified: Amazon says purchase history and household settings are accessible in Your Account, and its Privacy Notice points to browsing history, payment options and profile information there as well. A setting that removes an item from a recommendation or clears a particular Alexa recording does not create a private account boundary for someone else who can sign in.
Amazon Family is a different arrangement. Adults retain separate accounts while sharing eligible Prime benefits and digital content. It reduces access to each other’s account-level history compared with one shared login, but it is not a promise that every feature or household activity stays private. Linked accounts can share Shopping Lists, compatible Alexa calls and messages, and some Amazon Photos may appear on screen-enabled Echo devices. Payment methods are also part of Family verification and may be authorized for use in the Family context.
Choose the setup that fits your goal
| Question | One shared Amazon login | Separate adult accounts linked through Amazon Family |
|---|---|---|
| Can each adult keep account-level purchase and browsing history separate? | No. People using the same login can potentially view account information, including purchase history. | Yes, separate accounts create an account boundary; Amazon still shares eligible household features. |
| Can eligible Prime benefits or digital content be shared? | They are used under the same account. | Eligible benefits and content can be shared, subject to Amazon’s current eligibility, address and verification requirements. |
| Are payment methods entirely isolated? | No; they are attached to the shared account. | Not necessarily. Amazon’s current U.S. Family process uses payment sharing for household verification, and payment methods associated with an adult account are authorized for use in the Family context. |
| Can Alexa or other household features cross account boundaries? | Alexa activity belongs to the account and its controls. | Some linked-account functions can cross boundaries, including lists, compatible calls and messages, notifications, and photos on compatible Echo screens. |
If the priority is preventing another adult from browsing your orders or account-level history, do not rely on hiding individual items while continuing to share one login. Move to separate adult accounts if eligible benefits can be shared through Family. For a child, teen, or person who needs an account managed by an adult, use the appropriate Amazon household arrangement and check its current eligibility rather than sharing an adult password by default.

Think of the choice as a trade-off between convenience and separation. A single login is simple because shopping, payment methods and account controls all sit in one place, but it also means the account is shared in practice. Separate adult accounts provide a stronger boundary around account-level history, but you must decide whether the Family sharing rules, household verification and Alexa features suit everyone. Neither choice automatically controls every connected device or service.
Set up separate adult accounts with Amazon Family
Amazon’s current U.S. Amazon Family help page says adults can keep separate accounts while sharing eligible benefits and digital content. It allows one other adult, up to four teens subject to the page’s date-dependent teen eligibility, and up to four children in a household. These are household membership limits, not a guarantee that every service or benefit will be available to every member.
- Each adult should use or create an individual Amazon account with a unique password. Do not give the other adult your login if the goal is to separate account history.
- Review Amazon’s current U.S. Amazon Family page for the services and content eligible to share, the account requirements, and any marketplace-specific conditions before linking accounts.
- Follow the Family invitation and verification flow shown by Amazon. For Prime sharing, the U.S. help page lists a same-primary-residential-address requirement and payment verification. Prime Video sharing has a U.S. billing-address requirement.
- Review payment sharing before confirming. The current page describes one-way payment sharing from the organizer to the other adult for newly created Families as a household-verification measure. It also says that two adult accounts sharing digital content through Family Library require payment-method sharing for verification.
- After linking accounts, review Alexa linked-account notifications and any Amazon Photos groups. Family linkage can enable shared features even though each adult has a separate Amazon login.
Amazon’s U.S. page says Families created before September 18, 2026, with two-way payment sharing continue under that arrangement until a member is added or removed; either change triggers a transition to one-way sharing. Because this behavior and eligibility may change, confirm the terms on Amazon’s current page before changing membership. Prime Video Ad Free requires an individual subscription and is not shared through Family.
Payment verification deserves special attention before you accept an invitation. Amazon describes newly created Families as using one-way sharing from the organizer to the other adult, rather than a blanket exchange of both adults’ payment methods. But Amazon also says adult-account payment methods are authorized for use in the Family context, and Family Library digital-content sharing between two adults requires payment-method sharing for verification. Read the on-screen terms for the specific benefit you intend to use; do not assume that separate logins mean payment details are entirely isolated or that every purchase will be charged in the way you expect.
Amazon describes Family as a way to manage shared services, subscriptions and content while maintaining separate accounts. The sharing is limited to eligible benefits, not every Prime service or add-on. For example, Prime Video Ad Free requires an individual subscription and is not shared through Family. Check the current Amazon Family eligibility page for your marketplace and the particular benefit you want to share; requirements can depend on residential address, billing address, payment verification and membership eligibility.
Limit what a shared Amazon login reveals
If you cannot move to separate accounts yet, use the available account controls to reduce history-based personalization and protect an unattended session. These controls have narrower effects than account separation: they do not prevent another person with the shared password from accessing the account itself.

Review browsing history and recommendations
- Sign in to Amazon and open Your Account.
- Open Your Browsing History to review or edit the browsing history associated with that account.
- Open Amazon’s recommendation settings to remove items from recommendations if you do not want them used for personalization.
Removing an item from recommendations is not the same as deleting the account’s order record, and editing browsing history is not a substitute for a separate login. Amazon’s Privacy Notice also describes browsing without linking history to an account: sign out and block cookies in the browser. Amazon warns that blocking cookies may interfere with the cart, checkout and sign-in, so this is not a seamless way to shop privately while remaining signed out.
Recommended Free Tools
These settings address different things. Your Browsing History is the place to review or edit browsing activity tied to the account; recommendation controls affect whether items are used to personalize suggestions. Neither changes who can open Your Account while signed in. If your household is mainly concerned about recommendations revealing an interest, removing items from recommendations may help reduce that personalization, but it should not be presented as hiding the underlying account activity from another person sharing the login.
Sign out on shared or borrowed devices
Amazon recommends signing out from shared computers and using a unique Amazon password. On a device others can access, close the Amazon session when finished rather than leaving the account open. If you think someone else knows the password, change it to a unique password and do not reuse it on other services. A password change helps secure future access; it cannot make past activity private from someone who already saw it.
Signing out matters most on devices that are not exclusively yours: a borrowed computer, a shared tablet or a household browser profile that another person can open. Blocking cookies is a separate choice, not an alternative to signing out. Amazon cautions that cookie blocking can interfere with shopping-cart, checkout and sign-in functionality, so weigh that disruption against the limited goal of browsing without linking history to the account. If a service asks you to sign in again, account-linked activity may once more be associated with the signed-in account.
Manage Alexa recordings and linked-account activity
Alexa has controls separate from Amazon browsing and order settings. In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data to review history and voice-recording controls.
- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy, then Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Review the available controls for voice recordings and interaction history, then delete the items you want removed using the options presented in the app.
Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests deletes those items from its cloud. It does not necessarily erase every record associated with the interaction: attachments, information provided during a request, actions Alexa took, products searched for and other request-related information may remain. Some information is needed for Alexa functions such as reminders or orders. Do not interpret deletion of a recording as deletion of all Amazon account or service records.

That distinction is useful when deciding what to clear. A recording or transcript is one part of an Alexa interaction; the request may also have involved information supplied by the user, a product search or an action Alexa took. Amazon says some associated records can remain after voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests are deleted. The Alexa controls therefore let you manage voice-related history, but they are not a universal erase button for every account record created by using Alexa.
Turn off notifications between linked adults
If adult accounts are linked through Amazon Family, adjust the Alexa notification directions independently. In the Alexa app, go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications Preferences. Turn off Received from Linked Accounts to stop notifications received from linked accounts, and turn off Send to Linked Accounts to stop sending notifications to them. These controls address notifications; they do not disable all Family sharing.
Amazon says linked adults can share Amazon Shopping Lists and use compatible Alexa calls and messages across linked accounts and compatible devices. Payment methods associated with an adult account are authorized for use in the Family context. Alexa Profiles remain associated with the Amazon account on which they were created, so a profile name on a household device should not be assumed to establish a separate Amazon account or private history.
If your concern is specifically an Alexa list or message, do not expect the notification switches to make it private: those switches control whether notifications are received from or sent to linked accounts, not all shared Alexa functions. Likewise, disabling one direction does not disable the other direction; check both preferences if you want to stop notifications both ways. Review which household members can use compatible Alexa devices and which lists are shared as part of your Family setup.
Restrict access to an Amazon Photos group
For a shared Amazon Photos group, the specific access control in Amazon’s instructions is Link sharing. When it is on, people with the link may be able to access group photos. Turn it off to limit access to the owner and people invited to the group.
In the Amazon Photos mobile app
- Open Sharing and select the group.
- Open the group’s information.
- Use the member controls to add, remove or block members as needed.
- Switch off Link sharing to restrict access to the owner and invited people.
On the Amazon Photos website
- Open Sharing and select the group.
- Open Settings.
- In the Privacy tab, switch off Link sharing.
Only the group owner can remove or block members. Turning off Link sharing changes access to that group; it does not change access to other groups or to photos already available through another Amazon service. Amazon also says Amazon Photos may be viewable on Echo devices with screens when adult accounts are linked, so review those devices and the content they display if screen visibility matters.

Use both controls when needed: switching off Link sharing limits access to the owner and invited people, while the owner can separately add, remove or block members. Turning off link access does not remove a person who is already a member, and changing membership does not automatically address other photo groups. If the privacy concern is a photo appearing on a household Echo with a screen, review the linked-account and device context as well as the group’s link setting.

Can another person on your Amazon account see your orders?
If that person has the same login, assume they may be able to view account information, including purchase history. Amazon identifies purchase history as accessible in Your Account. The current source information does not establish that archiving an order hides it from another user of the same login, so do not treat archiving as a privacy control. For a meaningful boundary around order history, use separate adult accounts rather than relying on an unverified order-hiding feature.
Common privacy mistakes to avoid
- Deleting browser history but keeping the shared login: this can affect browsing history or recommendations, but another signed-in user still has access to the account.
- Deleting Alexa recordings and assuming every trace is gone: other interaction records may remain for service functions or associated activity.
- Linking Amazon Family without reviewing payment and Alexa settings: separate adult logins do not mean all household data flows are separate.
- Turning off Photos Link sharing but leaving unwanted members in the group: link access and group membership are distinct controls; use the owner’s member controls as well.
- Shopping while signed out with cookies blocked and expecting normal checkout: Amazon warns that cart, checkout and sign-in functions may not work correctly.
- Assuming every marketplace or device has identical controls: labels and behavior may vary by service, app version, device, account eligibility and marketplace.
- Assuming an Alexa profile is a separate private login: profiles remain associated with the Amazon account on which they were created.
- Assuming Prime sharing includes every add-on: Prime Video Ad Free requires an individual subscription and is not shared through Family.
How to choose the right level of separation
- Use separate adult accounts linked through Amazon Family when adults want distinct account histories but still want to share eligible household benefits. Check current regional requirements and decide whether payment sharing is acceptable.
- Keep one shared account only if shared visibility is acceptable. Use browsing, Alexa and Photos controls to manage specific histories or access paths, but regard the account itself as shared.
- Review each service independently. Amazon account browsing, Alexa interactions, linked-account notifications and Photos group links have different controls; changing one does not change the others.
Before changing the household setup, list what you actually want to share: eligible Prime benefits, digital content, Alexa calls and messages, Shopping Lists, or Photos groups. Then check the corresponding Family eligibility and privacy settings. If an adult needs their orders and browsing to remain outside another adult’s account access, separate logins are the meaningful first step; service-specific controls are additional boundaries, not substitutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide my Amazon browsing history from my family?
If your family members use the same Amazon login, editing Your Browsing History or removing items from recommendations may reduce history-based personalization, but it does not stop another signed-in user from accessing account information. For adults who want a stronger boundary, use separate accounts and check whether Amazon Family can share the eligible benefits you need. Amazon’s Privacy Notice also says you can browse without linking history to an account by signing out and blocking cookies, but warns that blocking cookies can interfere with cart, checkout and sign-in.
Can two adults share Prime without sharing one Amazon account?
Amazon Family lets adults keep separate accounts while sharing eligible Prime benefits and digital content, subject to current requirements. Amazon’s U.S. help page lists a same-primary-residential-address requirement and payment verification for Prime sharing. Check the current Amazon Family page for eligibility in your marketplace and for the specific benefit you want to share.

How do I stop Alexa from sharing my lists or notifications?
For linked-account notifications, open the Alexa app and go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications Preferences. Turn off Received from Linked Accounts to stop receiving them, and Send to Linked Accounts to stop sending them. These switches control notifications, not all Family sharing; Amazon says linked adults can share Amazon Shopping Lists and use compatible Alexa calls and messages.
Does deleting Alexa recordings remove all Alexa activity?
No. Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests deletes those items from its cloud, but other interaction records may remain, including attachments, information provided in requests, actions Alexa took, products searched for and other request-related information. Use More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data to review the available controls, and do not treat them as deletion of every Amazon account or service record.
How do I stop other people from opening an Amazon Photos group link?
In the Amazon Photos app, open Sharing, select the group, open its information and switch off Link sharing. On the website, open Sharing, select the group, open Settings and switch off Link sharing in the Privacy tab. Amazon says only the owner and invited people can access the group with link sharing off. Only the owner can remove or block group members, so use the member controls too if necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes Amazon Family keep all activity private between adults?
No. Separate accounts create an account-level boundary, but Amazon Family can still share eligible benefits and household features. Linked adults may share Shopping Lists, compatible Alexa calls and messages, notifications, and Amazon Photos visibility on Echo devices with screens. Payment methods are also part of the Family context and verification, so review the current terms before linking.
The Bottom Line
A shared Amazon login should be treated as shared account history: anyone with access may be able to see purchase and other account information. Separate adult accounts linked through Amazon Family offer a stronger boundary while allowing eligible benefits to be shared, but payment verification and connected features such as Alexa and Amazon Photos still need separate review. Use each service’s controls for the specific activity you want to limit, and do not assume they make a shared login private.
