Open a video in the YouTube Android app, switch the player to full screen, then spread two fingers across the video to zoom in. Pinch inward to restore the original framing. The enlarged view uses more of the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold display, but it can crop the source image; it cannot remove black bars that were encoded into the video.

Make a YouTube video fill more of the inner display

These steps follow Samsung’s Galaxy guidance and YouTube’s Android-player instructions. The exact Fold generation and One UI version are not specified, so a menu name or control location can differ slightly on your device.

  1. Unfold the phone and open the YouTube app. Select the video you want to watch and let the player load.
  2. Enter full screen. Tap the player’s full-screen control. YouTube’s Android instructions call for turning the device horizontally for landscape viewing. On a Fold, rotate the unfolded phone so the video is presented in the orientation you want before applying the gesture.
  3. Spread two fingers on the video. Place two fingertips on the picture and move them apart. This pinch-out gesture enlarges the image so it occupies more of the inner screen.
  4. Restore the original view when needed. Pinch two fingers inward on the full-screen video. YouTube returns to the original video size and framing.

Samsung Support describes the feature this way: “YouTube now supports pinch zooming to completely fill the screen.” “Completely” refers to using more of the available display area; it does not mean every source video can lose every bar or retain every edge at the same time.

What “fill the screen” means on a Fold

A Fold’s inner panel and a video file will not always have the same shape. A clip may be widescreen, square or vertical, while the unfolded display has its own aspect ratio. YouTube first chooses a layout that suits the source. Pinch-out is an additional viewing choice that enlarges that layout beyond its original framing.

Therefore, filling more of the panel does not create extra picture information. It makes the existing picture larger. If the source is narrower or wider than the display, the player must either leave unused areas or crop part of the image when enlarging it. There is no gesture that simultaneously shows every original pixel and guarantees that the picture reaches every edge of a differently shaped screen.

What pinch-to-zoom changes

The gesture scales the picture beyond its original on-screen framing. As the picture becomes larger, its edges extend beyond the visible area, so some of the original frame is cropped. A person near the edge, subtitles positioned close to a border, or graphics at the extreme top or bottom can disappear from view after zooming.

Samsung and YouTube guidance does not give a crop percentage for a particular Fold model or for a particular video. The amount depends on the video’s shape and the display’s shape. Treat the gesture as a viewing choice rather than a quality setting: it changes how much of the frame you see and how much of the display the picture occupies.

Pinch-out is reversible. Pinch inward returns to the original video size, allowing you to check the complete composition before deciding which view is better for that clip.

When the zoom gesture works

YouTube’s aspect-ratio requirement

YouTube’s Android full-screen help says pinch-out zoom requires a device aspect ratio greater than 16:9. That is a technical eligibility condition, not a promise that every video will fill every Fold screen. A compatible device and a compatible player state are both needed: the video must be playing in the YouTube app’s full-screen view, and the phone’s screen shape must meet YouTube’s stated threshold.

The 16:9 figure is not a measurement of how much of the Fold will be filled, nor is it a percentage of users or videos. It simply describes when YouTube makes the pinch-out behavior available. Since the title does not identify a Fold generation or software release, use the gesture as the first test rather than assuming that one model-specific result applies to every Fold.

Videos that already match the screen

Samsung says the zoom function cannot be used when the video has the same aspect ratio as the screen. In that situation, there is no additional mismatch for the gesture to correct, so spreading your fingers may have no visible effect. A video that already fits the panel is not failing merely because it does not enlarge further.

Black bars that are part of the video

Some uploads contain black bands inside the video file itself. Those bars are not added by the Fold’s player. Samsung says pinch zoom cannot remove black bars embedded in the video, so a spread gesture may enlarge the entire image while leaving those encoded bands visible. The practical test is to try the gesture once; if the bars are part of the source, the player cannot crop them away as a separate layer.

How YouTube fits vertical, square and widescreen videos

YouTube’s Android player adapts to the size and aspect ratio of the source video. It handles vertical, square and horizontal uploads differently instead of forcing every clip into one fixed rectangle.

  • Vertical video in portrait orientation: the player becomes taller to suit the upright source.
  • Square video in portrait orientation: the player also uses a taller layout than it would for a widescreen clip.
  • Widescreen video in portrait orientation: the player becomes shorter because the source is relatively wide.
  • Landscape full screen: the player uses the available horizontal layout, after which a supported pinch-out gesture can enlarge the image further.

This automatic fitting and manual zoom are separate behaviors. Automatic fitting determines the player’s initial layout for the source shape. Pinch-out deliberately enlarges that initial image and therefore may crop it. A vertical Short, a square tutorial and a cinematic widescreen upload can consequently look different before you touch the screen, even on the same Fold.

Choose between preserving the frame and filling more of the display

Viewing choice Screen coverage Original frame visible Best fit
Original full-screen fit Uses the player’s unzoomed layout; unused areas may remain when the source and screen shapes differ. Preserves the source framing, including objects near the edges. Movies, tutorials, presentations, subtitles or any clip where every border matters.
Pinch-out zoom Uses more of the inner display by enlarging the picture. Some of the source frame is cropped; the amount is not specified for an unspecified Fold model. Clips where a larger subject matters more than seeing the complete border.

There is no setting that can maximize both columns at once when the source and display have different shapes. If the video’s composition is important, remain at the original size. If empty space is more distracting than a cropped edge, use pinch-out and inspect the result. For a presentation, diagram or video with captions at the margins, preserving the full frame is usually the safer choice; for a subject centered in the picture, the larger view may be more comfortable.

A reliable viewing routine on a Galaxy Z Fold

Start with the inner display open

Open the Fold before launching the video so the player is already working with the larger inner screen. Select the clip, then use YouTube’s own full-screen control rather than relying only on the phone’s rotation. This keeps the action inside the player that supports the documented gesture.

Rotate before spreading your fingers

YouTube’s Android instructions associate full-screen landscape viewing with turning the device horizontally. Rotate first, wait for the player to settle, and then place both fingers on the picture. Attempting the gesture while controls or another view is covering the image can make it appear unresponsive even when the video supports zoom.

Make the spread deliberate

Touch the picture with two fingers at the same time and move them apart across the image. A very short movement may not visibly change the scale, so use a clear spread while keeping both contacts on the video. Do not use a one-finger drag or tap the control icons and expect the same result; the documented action is a two-finger pinch-out on the full-screen picture.

Check the picture after zooming

Look at the top, bottom and side edges after the spread gesture. If a face, caption or diagram is clipped, pinch inward and keep the original framing. If the important subject remains visible and the larger presentation is preferable, continue watching in the zoomed view.

Use pinch-in as a reset

When switching to a different video, or when a new scene contains edge-positioned information, pinch inward to return to the unzoomed view. This gives you a consistent starting point for judging each source rather than assuming one zoom level suits every upload.

Do you need another app, accessory or purchase?

No additional phone, screen protector, replacement part, stylus, stand or external display is identified as enabling YouTube’s fill-screen gesture. The action is a software feature in the YouTube Android player on a compatible Galaxy device. A Galaxy Z Fold is the device named in this question, but buying a newer Fold is not required simply to try the gesture on an unspecified model.

If you are choosing between Fold models, verify the exact generation and current software support separately. The available Samsung guidance is general for Galaxy phones and tablets and does not establish generation-specific behavior, menu wording or a particular retail listing. Product availability, pricing and affiliate terms are not part of the playback instructions.

Troubleshoot full screen or pinch-to-zoom problems

Samsung’s Galaxy support guidance recommends several checks when YouTube does not enter full screen or the expected display behavior is missing. Use them as troubleshooting options, not as mandatory preparation. Menu labels can vary with the device and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Check the connection

Verify that the phone has a working internet connection and allow the video to load normally. A player that is still buffering or failing to start may not expose all playback controls. Once playback is stable, try the full-screen control and the two-finger spread again.

2. Update YouTube

Install any available update for the YouTube app, then reopen the video. YouTube’s player behavior can change as the app is updated, so an older installation may not match current help instructions.

3. Clear YouTube’s cache and data

Samsung suggests clearing the YouTube cache and data when playback or full-screen behavior is malfunctioning. Use the app-management controls provided by your Galaxy software, then launch YouTube again and sign in if the app requests it. Because the exact path is version-dependent, look for YouTube in the phone’s application settings rather than assuming one fixed menu wording.

4. Restart the Fold

Restart the device after an update or after clearing app information. A fresh launch can resolve a temporary player or rotation state that prevents full-screen controls from behaving normally.

5. Check the full-screen app setting

Open Settings → Display → Full screen apps and make sure YouTube is selected. Samsung lists this as a check for Galaxy full-screen playback. The setting’s presentation can differ by software release, but the relevant control is the display list that determines which apps may use the full screen.

6. Try another browser or app

Samsung also suggests trying YouTube in another browser or app if the problem persists. This is a diagnostic step: if playback works elsewhere, the issue is more likely tied to the original app’s state or compatibility than to the Fold’s inner display itself. The browser or alternate app may present different controls, so do not assume that its gestures are identical to those in the YouTube Android app.

7. Distinguish a fault from an unsupported video

If full screen works but spreading two fingers does nothing, first consider the content and aspect ratio. The gesture is unavailable when the video and screen share an aspect ratio, and embedded black bars cannot be removed. Those are content or geometry limits, not necessarily a problem with the phone.

Common situations and the right response

The image gets larger but important edges vanish

That is the expected trade-off of zooming. Return to the original size with a pinch-in when the complete frame matters. There is no documented Fold-specific crop amount that would let you predict the exact missing area for every video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The video still has black bands after zooming

Determine whether the bands are part of the uploaded picture. Samsung’s guidance says embedded bars remain; pinch zoom is not a tool for deleting pixels that the creator placed inside the video.

The player fits a vertical clip differently from a movie

That behavior is expected. YouTube adapts its player to vertical, square and horizontal sources, with portrait layouts becoming taller for vertical and square clips and shorter for widescreen clips. Manual zoom remains a separate, optional enlargement.

The full-screen button is available but the display does not rotate

Follow the troubleshooting sequence: confirm the connection, update YouTube, restart the Fold, and check Settings → Display → Full screen apps. If the issue remains, test YouTube in another browser or app as Samsung suggests. Do not infer from one failed rotation that pinch zoom is unavailable; first establish that the player is actually in its full-screen state.

Pinch-out works on one upload but not another

Compare the source and screen shapes before treating that difference as a fault. YouTube adapts each upload independently, and Samsung says zoom is unavailable when the video has the same aspect ratio as the screen. A source with encoded black bars can also remain letterboxed after enlargement. Pinch inward, start the next video at its original fit, and judge that clip on its own.

What this guidance does not establish

The instructions apply to Galaxy phones and tablets generally and to YouTube on Android. They do not identify a particular Galaxy Z Fold generation, One UI release or regional software build. Consequently, the gesture is the appropriate first method for an unspecified Fold, while exact menu wording and the appearance of the full-screen control may differ on your handset.

The official guidance also does not provide device-specific measurements, a crop percentage, a list of every supported video format, or a publication date for the support pages. Do not treat the 16:9 condition as a performance statistic; it is YouTube’s stated technical threshold for pinch-out zoom.

Fast decision guide

  1. Want every edge visible? Stay with YouTube’s original full-screen fit.
  2. Want a larger picture and can accept cropping? Spread two fingers on the full-screen video.
  3. Does the spread do nothing? Check whether the video and screen share an aspect ratio, then consider embedded black bars.
  4. Is full screen itself failing? Work through Samsung’s connection, update, cache/data, restart and full-screen-app checks, then test another browser or app.

The central distinction is simple: YouTube’s player chooses an initial layout for the source video, while pinch-out asks it to enlarge that layout. The first aims to fit the content; the second prioritizes using more of the Fold’s inner display and accepts that part of the source frame may be outside the visible area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact gesture for filling the inner screen?

Open the video in the YouTube Android app, enter full screen, and spread two fingers apart on the picture. Pinch inward to return to the original size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will pinch-to-zoom remove all black bars?

No. Samsung says bars embedded in the uploaded video remain. Zooming cannot delete black bands that are part of the source image.

Why does pinch-out do nothing?

YouTube says pinch-out requires a device aspect ratio greater than 16:9. Samsung also says zoom is unavailable when the video and screen have the same aspect ratio. Confirm that the video is in YouTube’s full-screen player before testing again.

Does zooming crop the video?

Yes. Enlarging the picture uses more of the display but can move the source edges outside the visible area. Pinch inward whenever subtitles, faces or graphics near the border are cut off.

Do vertical and square videos behave differently?

Yes. YouTube adapts its player to vertical, square and horizontal sources. In portrait orientation, vertical and square clips use a taller player, while widescreen video uses a shorter one. Manual pinch-out is separate from that automatic fitting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special accessory or another phone?

No accessory is identified as enabling the feature. The gesture is performed in the YouTube Android app on a compatible Galaxy device; a purchase is not required just to try it.

What should I do if YouTube will not go full screen?

Check the connection, update YouTube, clear its cache and data, restart the Fold, and check Settings → Display → Full screen apps to ensure YouTube is selected. Samsung also suggests trying YouTube in another browser or app.

Is the procedure identical on every Galaxy Z Fold?

The documented guidance is general for Galaxy phones and tablets and does not name a Fold generation or One UI release. The pinch gesture is the appropriate first method, but controls and menu wording can vary by model, software version and region.

The Bottom Line

For the largest YouTube picture on a Galaxy Z Fold, open the video in full screen and spread two fingers apart. Pinch inward to restore the complete frame. Zooming can crop edges, cannot remove black bars encoded in the video, and may be unavailable when the device and video share an aspect ratio.
