You can often improve slow Wi-Fi for free by checking what is slow, restarting the router, moving it to a better spot, and choosing the band that suits each device. First, measure performance: a Wi-Fi speed test reflects the device, wireless connection, router, and broadband service together, so one low result does not identify the cause.
Find out where the slowdown is
Run a free speed test before changing anything. Repeat it later under similar conditions, since speeds can vary, and note the results. If possible, compare a device near the router with one in the problem area, and test a second device. Keep heavy downloads or streaming on your network paused while you compare so they do not skew the result.
A test near the router helps separate a coverage problem from a broader one. If a device is fast nearby but slow farther away, distance, walls, or interference may be involved. If several devices are slow even near the router, the router or broadband service may be the issue. If you already have a wired connection available, compare its result with Wi-Fi; do not buy a cable just to perform this check.
Ofcom recommends repeating speed tests and using the results to help distinguish a Wi-Fi issue from a broadband problem: Ofcom’s slow or unreliable connection guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Restart the router
A restart is a quick, free first step. The Federal Communications Commission says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.” Follow your router’s instructions; Ofcom suggests switching it off for about 30 seconds, then turning it back on. Wait for the connection to return before testing again. A restart may help with a temporary problem, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade.
Move the router to a clearer, more central spot
Place the router in an open location, ideally nearer the rooms and devices that need a strong connection. Keep it away from obstacles where practical. Walls, furniture, and other objects can weaken or slow a wireless connection; a router tucked behind a cabinet or in a far corner may serve the rest of the home poorly. - Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Choose the Wi-Fi band that fits the device
If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, the better choice depends on where the device is and what it needs. Neither band is universally best.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Band | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Devices farther from the router or separated by more obstacles | Generally covers more area, but may provide lower data rates |
| 5 GHz | Nearby devices where faster data transfer matters | Can provide faster data rates, but is more limited by distance and obstacles |
Try the band that matches the device’s location, then repeat your test. The result also depends on the device and the surrounding wireless environment. - NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Reduce congestion and check interference
Several active devices using the connection at once can affect performance. Pause downloads, backups, or other heavy use that is not needed while you test. Nearby wireless networks and other wireless devices can also interfere, and local conditions vary from home to home.
If your router offers channel selection, use its instructions to try automatic channel selection or a different available channel, then test again. Do not assume a manual channel change will help every home: its effect depends on nearby networks and the router’s controls. When to contact your internet provider
If multiple devices remain slow near the router after you have repeated comparable tests, contact your internet service provider and ask it to check for a service issue. Share the test results and explain whether they were taken close to the router, at different times, or on multiple devices. A slow Wi-Fi test by itself does not prove that the broadband line is at fault.

If service tests look healthy but wireless performance remains poor, check whether the router can provide the speeds included in your subscribed plan and whether the devices support the connection you are using. The FCC advises checking router capability before considering replacement: FCC consumer guidance on Wi-Fi. Updating router software is sensible security maintenance, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to speed up Wi-Fi; the FTC recommends checking the manufacturer’s and ISP’s update guidance: FTC advice on securing home Wi-Fi.
