The hosting cutover happens when your domain’s DNS starts directing visitors to the new server—not when files are copied. To make the move safely, build and test the new environment while the old site remains online, lower DNS TTL in advance, switch the correct DNS records, remove staging-only crawl blocks, and monitor both servers until public traffic and search crawlers consistently reach the new host.

What actually makes a migrated website live?

A server migration has two separate milestones. First, the site must be complete and functional on the replacement infrastructure. Second, the public DNS records for the domain must point website traffic to that infrastructure. The second step is the cutover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on your architecture, the record you change may be an A record for an IPv4 address, an AAAA record for IPv6, a CNAME used by a proxy or platform, or the domain’s authoritative nameservers. Changing an unrelated record, such as a mail record, will not move the website.

Keep the old server available throughout DNS caching, final validation, and rollback planning. Different visitors can receive different DNS answers for a while because recursive resolvers and local networks cache records independently.

Decide whether this is only a hosting move or also a URL move

Your migration plan depends on whether the public URLs stay identical.

Migration type What changes SEO and launch work
Infrastructure-only move Files, databases, and runtime move to another host; domain, protocol, hostnames, and paths remain the same. DNS cutover, functional testing, crawl access, logs, uptime, and rollback monitoring.
URL move The domain, subdomain, HTTP/HTTPS protocol, hostname, or URL paths also change. Everything in an infrastructure move, plus an old-to-new URL map, direct permanent redirects, canonical and internal-link updates, robots and sitemap updates, and search-console monitoring.

Treat URL changes as a separate project. A server move does not require redirects when the URLs truly remain unchanged, but changing even one hostname or path creates a redirect and indexing obligation.

Prepare the new server before touching DNS

Copy the application and its data

  • Upload every web, media, and downloadable file, including files outside the document root that the application needs.
  • Import the production database and verify character sets, database versions, users, privileges, and connection strings.
  • Recreate runtime versions, extensions, package dependencies, environment variables, queues, caches, and background workers.
  • Recreate file ownership and permissions using the least privilege that still lets the application read and write required locations.
  • Configure storage volumes, uploads, backups, scheduled jobs, cron tasks, webhooks, and external API credentials.

Recreate the web and security configuration

  • Add every production domain and alternate hostname that should answer on the new server.
  • Install a valid TLS certificate and configure both HTTP and HTTPS behavior before launch.
  • Match URL rewriting, compression, caching, upload limits, timeouts, and header policies from the old environment.
  • Allow required inbound ports and configure firewall, web-application firewall, rate-limit, and denial-of-service controls without blocking legitimate users or search crawlers.
  • Recreate email dependencies separately. Website DNS changes do not automatically move mail, and MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records must continue to point to the systems that handle mail.

Compare the old and new configuration files and environment variables line by line. A page that loads in a browser can still fail later when a payment callback, scheduled task, image processor, or administrative job uses a missing setting.

Build a private test copy

Google recommends testing a move on an IP-restricted copy or a temporary hostname before the public DNS switch. Restrict access with a network allowlist, authentication, or both. If you use a temporary hostname, explicitly prevent indexing; a temporary address can otherwise appear in search results.

Protect staging from search engines

  • Use an access restriction whenever possible.
  • Keep migration-only noindex directives and restrictive robots rules on the test copy.
  • Do not rely on robots.txt alone to protect sensitive content: crawlers may discover a blocked URL without being allowed to fetch its page.
  • Record every staging-only setting in a launch checklist so it can be removed deliberately.

Test real user journeys

  1. Open the home page, representative content pages, category or archive pages, and a URL with query parameters.
  2. Load images, stylesheets, scripts, fonts, downloads, video, and other static assets.
  3. Submit contact, newsletter, and support forms; confirm validation, email delivery, spam controls, and success pages.
  4. Sign in, sign out, reset a password, and test roles or permissions used by administrators and customers.
  5. Exercise search, filtering, carts, checkout, subscriptions, bookings, or any other transaction path that applies to the site.
  6. Test integrations such as analytics, payment gateways, shipping, CRM, webhooks, social login, and third-party APIs.
  7. Check error pages, redirects, canonical tags, structured data, pagination, language variants, and downloadable files.

Compare generated HTML and important response headers with the old site. Check that staging does not expose production secrets and that links do not accidentally point to the temporary hostname.

Preserve verification and crawler access

Before cutover, confirm that every Search Console verification file, HTML tag, DNS verification record, and analytics tag needed by your team will remain valid after the move. A verification file that exists only on the old server can disappear as soon as DNS changes.

Review firewall and bot controls from outside the network. Googlebot and other legitimate crawlers must be able to resolve the domain, establish HTTPS connections, and fetch normal pages. Do not mistake a security rule that blocks unwanted automation for a rule that blocks all unfamiliar user agents or cloud networks.

Lower DNS TTL before the switch

DNS records have a time-to-live (TTL), which tells caching resolvers how long they may reuse an answer. Lowering the TTL before cutover can shorten the period during which some users still receive the old address. Google gives “a few hours” as an example of a conservative low value and recommends making the change at least a week before the move when possible.

Lower the TTL on the records that serve the website, not just on an unrelated record. Confirm the authoritative DNS provider accepts the new value, then allow the previous, longer TTL to expire before the final switch. A low TTL cannot instantly clear caches that already stored the old value; it only affects future refresh behavior.

Complete the final data and capacity check

Account for writes

Identify anything that can change during the final copy: orders, comments, registrations, uploads, messages, or CMS edits. Choose a short maintenance window, temporarily pause writes, put the application in read-only mode, or replicate changes until the final synchronization. Otherwise, the new database can launch missing records created on the old host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take recoverable backups

  • Take a final database backup and verify that it can be restored.
  • Back up application files, user uploads, configuration, certificates, and scheduled-job definitions.
  • Save the current DNS records and provider settings so rollback does not depend on memory.
  • Keep credentials and recovery keys in a secure location accessible to the on-call operator.

Check capacity and limits

Confirm that CPU, memory, storage, database connections, worker counts, bandwidth, and file-descriptor limits match expected demand. Google notes that a move can temporarily increase crawling, so leave headroom for additional requests rather than sizing the new server only for the old average.

Cut over DNS and remove staging blocks

  1. Confirm the final content and database synchronization is complete and that the old site is still healthy.
  2. Remove the temporary noindex directive and staging-only robots restrictions from the production copy. Keep any deliberate production exclusions.
  3. Update the website-serving A, AAAA, or CNAME records, or change nameservers if DNS authority is moving. Make only the records required for the website; do not overwrite mail or verification records accidentally.
  4. Record the exact time, old value, new value, TTL, operator, and rollback value.
  5. Keep the old host serving the site while cached DNS answers expire and validation proceeds.

The DNS change is the public hosting cutover. Uploading files, changing a control-panel setting, or installing a certificate on the new machine does not direct visitors there by itself.

Validate the live site from outside your network

Do not validate only from a workstation that may use a cached answer. Query the domain through more than one public DNS resolver and, where possible, from different networks or geographic locations. Confirm that the answers eventually show the new infrastructure while recognizing that a temporary mixture is expected.

Use this launch checklist

  • Resolve the apex domain and every production subdomain used by the site.
  • Open representative URLs over HTTP and HTTPS.
  • Confirm the certificate covers the exact hostname, is unexpired, and presents the expected chain.
  • Check that HTTP redirects to the intended HTTPS or canonical hostname without loops.
  • Load pages with and without a trailing slash, common query strings, and legacy aliases.
  • Submit forms and verify email, database writes, and confirmation messages.
  • Test authentication, checkout, downloads, search, and other critical transactions.
  • Inspect response status codes, server timing, cache headers, security headers, and application logs.
  • Check that analytics and conversion events still arrive.
  • Verify that robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonical links, and structured data are available on the production hostname.

Run checks repeatedly during the first hours rather than treating one successful request as proof that every resolver has switched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle URL changes with a complete redirect plan

If the domain, protocol, hostname, or paths changed, create a row for every important old URL and its exact destination. Include pages that receive traffic, backlinks, search impressions, or internal links, not just the home page.

Implement direct permanent redirects

Use server-side permanent redirects, preferably HTTP 301 or 308, from each old URL directly to its final new URL. Avoid chains such as old URL to an intermediate URL to a final URL, and avoid redirecting every unrelated page to the home page. Preserve query parameters when the destination application requires them.

Google advises keeping migration redirects for as long as possible, generally at least one year. Continue checking old URLs for missed mappings and keep the old infrastructure available long enough to serve those redirects reliably.

Update the signals that describe the new URLs

  • Change canonical links to the new URLs.
  • Update internal navigation, images, scripts, feeds, structured references, and hreflang annotations.
  • Review robots rules so the new paths are crawlable and obsolete rules do not block them.
  • Generate and submit XML sitemaps containing the final URLs.
  • Update external integrations, callback URLs, webhooks, and API allowlists.

Use Search Console after launch

Verify all relevant old and new properties, including protocol and hostname variants that matter to the move. Use URL Inspection to test representative new pages, review indexing and coverage reports, and submit the new XML sitemap.

Use Change of Address only when moving to a different domain or subdomain. Google says it is not intended for an HTTP-to-HTTPS change or a same-site path change. Those moves still require the appropriate redirects and updated canonical and sitemap signals.

Expect search crawling to fluctuate temporarily. Google says small-to-medium URL migrations commonly take a few weeks for most pages to move, while larger sites can take longer. A short-term change in crawl rate is not, by itself, proof of a ranking penalty; investigate persistent indexing or traffic losses alongside logs, status codes, and page-level reports.

Monitor both servers before decommissioning the old one

Keep the old infrastructure online until evidence shows the move is complete. Compare old and new access logs, analytics, DNS answers, uptime checks, response errors, crawl errors, indexing reports, and user reports.

Signals that the migration is healthy

  • Public resolvers increasingly return the new address.
  • Requests arriving at the old host decline as requests arrive at the new host.
  • Critical pages return the expected status and content over HTTPS.
  • Application, database, payment, email, and scheduled-job logs show normal operation.
  • Search Console reports no widespread blocked, redirected, server-error, or duplicate-URL problems.
  • Users can complete the actions that matter to the business.

When to roll back

Roll back if the new host has widespread errors, missing data, broken transactions, invalid certificates, or a security problem that cannot be corrected quickly. Restore the saved DNS values, keep the old site serving, and stop making unrelated changes while you identify the fault. Because cached answers may continue reaching the new host, the replacement server should remain safe and able to display a maintenance response during rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once traffic has moved, logs are clean, users and crawlers receive the intended site, and any URL redirects have been verified, you can schedule final decommissioning. Preserve backups, DNS history, redirect configuration, and monitoring records before deleting the old environment.

Common failure modes and fixes

Some visitors still see the old site

This is usually DNS caching rather than a failed upload. Check authoritative answers, resolver results, record TTLs, and local cache behavior. Keep both hosts functional until the cached period has passed.

The new site shows a blank page or server error

Compare runtime versions, missing extensions, environment variables, database credentials, file permissions, rewrite rules, and application logs. Confirm that the new host can reach its database and required external services.

HTTPS warns about a certificate

Verify that the certificate includes the exact apex and www or other hostname being requested, that the server presents the correct certificate, and that the full certificate chain is installed. Check both IPv4 and IPv6 endpoints if both records exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pages disappear from search

Inspect a missing URL, look for accidental noindex, restrictive robots rules, authentication barriers, five-hundred-level errors, incorrect canonicals, and redirects to irrelevant destinations. Confirm that the sitemap lists the final canonical URLs.

Forms or payments fail only after cutover

Check callback allowlists, DNS names used by integrations, firewall rules, environment secrets, time synchronization, outbound network access, and queue workers. Test a complete transaction and inspect both the application and provider logs.

All-at-once or staged migration?

Small and medium sites can generally switch together after a complete test. Larger sites may stage sections so that a problem is isolated to one part of the property. A staged approach requires consistent DNS, routing, cookies, authentication, analytics, and redirect rules; do not split traffic merely to create the appearance of progress.

Approach Best fit Main trade-off
All at once A site that can be copied and validated as one coherent application. Shorter change window, but a defect can affect the entire site.
Staged sections A large property with separable applications or sections and strong observability. Limits blast radius, but increases routing, data-consistency, and monitoring complexity.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • New files, database, runtime, storage, permissions, jobs, and integrations are complete.
  • Private testing covered representative content and every critical user journey.
  • Staging access restrictions and crawl blocks are documented and have a removal step.
  • Search Console verification, analytics, certificates, DNS records, and mail dependencies are confirmed.
  • Website DNS TTL was lowered ahead of time, with the old value recorded.
  • Final backups and a tested rollback DNS configuration exist.
  • Write activity is frozen, replicated, or otherwise accounted for during the final synchronization.
  • The new host has capacity for normal traffic and a temporary crawl increase.
  • External DNS checks, HTTPS tests, forms, authentication, transactions, logs, and monitoring are ready.
  • If URLs changed, the redirect map, canonical links, robots rules, internal links, and sitemap are complete.
  • The old server will remain online until traffic and crawler requests have demonstrably moved.

Bottom line

Make the new copy production-ready first, test it privately, lower DNS TTL in advance, and change the website-serving DNS record only when you can support a controlled cutover. Remove accidental indexing blocks at launch, preserve crawler access, apply direct permanent redirects for any URL changes, and keep the old host available while DNS, users, and search engines converge. Decommission only after logs and monitoring show that the new server is handling the site correctly.
