Make important pages reachable through ordinary links, list their preferred URLs in a current sitemap, avoid blocking Google from pages or rendering resources it needs, and keep duplicate-URL and JavaScript signals consistent. Then use Search Console and server logs to find access, indexing, and server problems. These steps help Google discover and interpret your site, but they cannot force a crawl, guarantee indexing, or promise rankings.

How crawling, indexing, and search results fit together

Getting a page into Google Search involves distinct stages. Google must first discover a URL, fetch the page, and render it when necessary. It can then analyze the page and decide whether to include it in its index. Separately, Google decides whether and how to serve an indexed page for a particular query. A page can be discovered without being fetched promptly, fetched without being indexed, or indexed without appearing for the searches its owner expects.

Google Search Central describes its system this way: “Google Search is a fully-automated search engine that uses software known as web crawlers to explore the web regularly to find pages to add to our index.” That description explains why a site owner supplies accessible pages and useful signals rather than submitting an instruction that guarantees a result. Google does not guarantee that it will crawl or index a particular page, and no checklist can promise a timeline or ranking.

Keep the goal practical: remove avoidable obstacles and make each important page understandable. First make it findable through links, then ensure Google can access and render it, and finally check what Google reports about that URL.

Make important pages discoverable through links

Internal links connect your pages and give crawlers paths to follow. Put links to important content on pages Google can already find, such as relevant category pages, navigation, or related articles. Do not leave a valuable page accessible only through a site search box, a form submission, or an interaction that a crawler cannot follow.

Use standard links with descriptive destinations

For a link Google can reliably crawl, use an HTML anchor element with an href containing the destination URL. For example: <a href="/guides/site-maps/">Read the sitemap guide</a>. Google generally relies on links expressed as anchor elements with an href; a button-like control with a script-only click handler is not an equivalent crawl path.

Write anchor text that tells a person what the linked page is about. “Read the sitemap guide” describes the destination more clearly than “click here.” The surrounding page should also make sense: link from a relevant page where the destination is useful, rather than adding unrelated links solely to create more crawl paths.

Check the site’s information architecture

  • Make sure important pages are linked from other pages, rather than existing as isolated URLs.
  • Use navigation and category structures that help visitors reach key sections.
  • Link to app screens and other distinct pieces of content with real URLs and crawlable anchors.
  • After publishing or moving a page, check that internal links point to its current preferred URL, not an obsolete or redirecting variant.

A sitemap can provide another discovery path, but it does not replace useful internal links. Links help both people and crawlers move through the site; the sitemap is a separate list of URLs you want considered for Search.

Think of the path to an important page as a visitor would: can someone start from a page that is already part of your site and follow a clear sequence of links to reach it? If not, add an appropriate link in navigation, a category, or related content. This makes the page easier to discover without relying on a crawler to infer destinations from a control that only works after a particular interaction.

Build and maintain a sitemap that reflects preferred URLs

A sitemap gives Google information about URLs on your site. Include the absolute URLs of pages you want considered for search, using each page’s preferred version. Keep the file current as pages are added, removed, or moved. If you include last-modified information, keep it accurate; a date that does not reflect a real content change is not useful information.

Google supports standard sitemap formats and does not express a preference for one format. XML is versatile; larger inventories can be split among multiple sitemap files or organized with a sitemap index. Google documents a limit of 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per sitemap file. If an inventory exceeds either limit, use multiple files and, where appropriate, an index to organize them.

Choose a format and organization based on the size of the inventory and the data you need to include, not on an expectation that one supported format will receive preferential crawling. A sitemap index is an organizational option when you have multiple sitemap files; it does not change the role of the entries themselves. Regardless of format, the important checks are that the listed addresses are the preferred versions and that the file remains accurate.

  1. Choose the URLs. Add preferred, canonical URLs for content you want eligible for Search. Do not list alternate versions or URLs that you intend to keep out of Search.
  2. Keep the file accurate. Remove deleted URLs and update entries when pages move. Use last-modified values only when they reflect actual changes.
  3. Validate the inventory. Check that listed URLs resolve to the intended pages and do not point to an obsolete variant or a page that should not be indexed.
  4. Submit it in Search Console. Submission helps Google learn about the URLs; it is not a command to crawl them or a guarantee of indexing.

Repeatedly resubmitting an unchanged sitemap is not a substitute for fixing a discovery, access, or content problem. If a URL is intentionally excluded from Search, do not add it as though it were a preferred page.

A sitemap is best treated as a maintained inventory, not a running log of every URL the site has ever generated. When a page is moved, update the entry to its preferred destination; when content is removed, remove its old URL from the inventory. This keeps the sitemap aligned with your internal links and canonical signals, so it does not suggest that an alternate or retired address is the one you want Google to consider.

Let Google fetch pages and resources it needs

Review your robots.txt rules to catch accidental blocks on important pages. Also check whether the rules prevent Google from fetching CSS, JavaScript, images, or other resources needed to render a page. A page’s source may look complete to a developer while its rendered version loses key content because required resources cannot be fetched.

robots.txt controls crawler access; it is not a reliable mechanism for removing a URL from Google’s index. A crawl restriction and an indexing-removal instruction are different things. If a page should not appear in Search, do not assume that blocking crawling by itself will achieve that outcome. Check the page’s indexing directives and the status Google reports for the URL.

Remember that robots rules are scoped to a particular host, protocol, and port. A rule applied to one site origin does not automatically cover every other origin or variant. When checking access, test the exact version of the site that contains the page—for example, its actual protocol and hostname—and confirm that the relevant rule is being applied there.

Check responses as well as rules

A crawler must be able to reach the server and receive a useful response. Look for network failures, incorrect status codes, and server errors such as 5xx responses. Google may slow its crawl when a server is having trouble, so a burst of failed requests or recurring server errors can affect discovery and fetching beyond the individual failed page.

  • Confirm important pages load successfully at their intended URLs.
  • Investigate 5xx responses, timeouts, and intermittent network failures instead of treating them as indexing mysteries.
  • Check that an important page is not accidentally returning a status or directive that conflicts with its intended availability.
  • Review access rules for both the page and the resources needed to render it.

Separate an access problem from an indexing decision. If Google cannot fetch the page or essential resources, first address the rule, response, or network issue. If the page can be fetched but is not in the index, use the URL’s reported status and its indexing signals to investigate that separate stage. Fixing a block does not itself guarantee inclusion; it removes one obstacle and gives Google an opportunity to process the page.

Reduce ambiguity between duplicate URL versions

The same content can be reachable through multiple URLs. If your site offers variants, choose the URL you prefer Google to treat as the main version, then use consistent signals to communicate that choice. Google considers redirects and rel="canonical" annotations stronger signals than sitemap inclusion, but canonical selection remains Google’s decision.

Signal When it fits What it communicates
Redirect Use when retiring an obsolete or duplicate URL and sending visitors to the replacement. The old address should lead to the preferred destination. It is a stronger canonical signal than sitemap inclusion.
rel="canonical" Use when a duplicate or alternate URL should remain available but you want to indicate a preferred version. The annotated URL is your preference among versions. Keep canonical annotations consistent with the page’s actual preferred URL.
Sitemap inclusion Use to list the preferred URLs you want considered for Search. The listed URL is a preference signal, but it is weaker than a redirect or canonical annotation.

These signals can be combined: redirect variants you no longer need, mark the preferred URL consistently on pages that remain available, and list preferred URLs in the sitemap. Avoid sending conflicting messages—for example, listing one version in the sitemap while declaring another as canonical. None of these signals guarantees that Google will select the URL you prefer.

The implementation choice depends on whether the alternate address still needs to work. If it is obsolete and visitors should land elsewhere, a redirect fits that purpose. If both addresses need to remain accessible, a canonical annotation communicates which one you prefer. Sitemap inclusion reinforces the preferred URL in either case, but is a weaker signal on its own. Review all three places together when changing URL structures so internal links, annotations, redirects, and sitemap entries agree.

Make JavaScript pages and metadata understandable

Google can render JavaScript, but a site should not make distinct content depend on a single URL that changes only through client-side interactions. A single-page application should expose individual pieces of content at distinct URLs. This gives each page a stable address that can be linked, discovered, inspected, and associated with its own descriptive page information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use distinct URLs and crawlable navigation

Give each important app screen or content item its own URL and link to it with a standard anchor and href. Do not rely only on a click handler that swaps visible content while leaving the address unchanged. Test that a page can be reached directly at its URL, not just by starting at the home screen and clicking through the application.

Keep titles and canonicals consistent

Use a descriptive page title that fits the content at that URL. Make canonical declarations consistent with the URL and with the original HTML. Google can process JavaScript during rendering, but the initial HTML and the rendered page should not provide contradictory canonical information. If the canonical changes only after rendering or conflicts with the preferred URL you list in the sitemap, review the implementation and align the signals.

When checking a JavaScript-heavy page, look beyond whether the browser displays something after scripts run. Confirm that the expected content and page signals are available to Google after rendering, that resources are accessible, and that separate pages have separate addresses. This is particularly important when a page appears blank or incomplete to a crawler because scripts or resources fail to load.

A useful test is to open a specific app URL directly, rather than reaching that screen only by navigating from the home page. Check that it has its own descriptive title and that the canonical information identifies the same preferred page as the original HTML. If two screens have different content but share one address, Google and users have less clear signals about how to reach and distinguish them. Give each distinct piece of content an address and a crawlable link.

Diagnose crawl and indexing problems in Search Console and logs

Use Google Search Console to check the status of a specific URL and to review site-level indexing information. URL Inspection is useful for investigating an individual page; Page Indexing reporting can help identify patterns across pages. Search Console is available at no cost, but its reports are diagnostic information, not a promise that a URL will be indexed.

  1. Inspect the exact preferred URL. In Search Console, use URL Inspection for the version you want Google to consider, rather than assuming alternate protocol, hostname, or path variants have the same status.
  2. Check page availability and indexing signals. Review whether access is blocked, whether the page has an unintended noindex directive, and whether the reported status points to a response or indexing issue.
  3. Compare the inspected page with your intended setup. Confirm that its canonical, sitemap entry, internal links, robots rules, and returned page all point toward the same preferred version.
  4. Review the wider pattern. Use Page Indexing reporting to see whether similar URLs share an access, status-code, or directive problem.
  5. Check server logs when fetching is in doubt. Look for Googlebot requests and their responses, especially failures and server errors. Logs can distinguish a crawler that has not requested a page from one that requested it but received an error.
  6. Fix the cause, then monitor. Correct the relevant link, rule, status, directive, canonical, or server issue and allow Google to revisit the URL. Do not plan around a guaranteed same-day crawl or indexing date.

A single URL inspection answers a narrower question than a whole-site review. If one page is unavailable, investigate that URL and its response. If many similar pages show the same pattern, inspect shared templates, rules, and server behavior. This keeps troubleshooting focused on the cause rather than repeatedly submitting URLs.

Use the reports and logs to ask different questions in sequence: Is the URL known? Could Google fetch it? Did the server return a successful response? Could Google access the resources needed to render it? Are the canonical and indexing directives consistent with your intent? The answers help narrow the next fix. For example, a block points toward access configuration, while recurring 5xx responses point toward server reliability. Neither issue is solved by changing sitemap entries alone.

For a small site, Search Console’s free URL and site-level diagnostics may be enough to identify the next step. Paid technical auditing tools are optional; consider them only if you need broader site analysis. Likewise, hosting or server support is relevant when logs or errors indicate network or server trouble, not as a general requirement for crawling. No particular paid service is needed to follow the core checks in this guide.

  1. Confirm the page exists at a stable, preferred URL. Load it directly and decide which version should represent it.
  2. Link to it from crawlable pages. Use relevant anchor text and a real href, including for JavaScript application navigation.
  3. Check access. Review robots rules, response status, network availability, and access to rendering resources.
  4. Align duplicate signals. Redirect retired variants, use consistent canonical annotations where variants remain, and avoid conflicting sitemap URLs.
  5. Make the rendered page legible. Ensure content, titles, and canonical information correspond to the page’s distinct URL and remain consistent with the original HTML.
  6. List the preferred URL in the sitemap. Keep the sitemap current and within Google’s per-file limits.
  7. Inspect and monitor. Check URL Inspection and Page Indexing reporting, then use server logs to investigate fetch failures or server trouble.

Changing multiple signals at once can make it harder to identify which issue caused a reported change. Where possible, address a known problem, verify the implementation, and then monitor the affected URL or group of pages.

Apply the sequence to the exact URL you care about, then repeat the checks for other important pages or shared page types. A site-wide issue in a template or robots rule can affect many URLs; a problem isolated to one page may call for a narrower fix. Keep expectations realistic after making a change: Google chooses when to revisit a page and whether it belongs in the index, so use reporting and logs to monitor rather than treating submission as a deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my site into Google?

Make important pages reachable from pages Google can already find using standard links with an href, and include preferred URLs in a current sitemap. Then check that Google can fetch the pages and resources they need to render, and inspect the URLs in Search Console. These steps help discovery and diagnosis, but they do not guarantee crawling, indexing, or rankings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why isn’t my page indexed?

First check whether Google can access the exact URL: review its robots rules, response status, network availability, and any unintended noindex directive. Then compare its canonical declaration, sitemap entry, and internal links to ensure they identify the same preferred URL. URL Inspection can help with an individual page, while Page Indexing reporting can reveal patterns. A page can be fetched and still not be selected for indexing.

How do I get Google to crawl a page?

Link to it from relevant pages with a crawlable anchor and submit its preferred URL in an accurate sitemap. Confirm that robots rules do not block the page or necessary rendering resources, and that the server returns a useful response. Google may revisit pages on its own schedule; submitting a sitemap or inspecting a URL is not a command that guarantees a crawl or a same-day result.

Should I use a redirect, a canonical tag, or a sitemap for duplicate URLs?

Use a redirect when retiring an alternate URL and sending visitors to the replacement. Use a rel="canonical" annotation when an alternate URL should remain available but you want to indicate a preferred version. Include preferred URLs in the sitemap as an additional, weaker signal. Keep the signals consistent; Google makes the final canonical selection.

Does robots.txt remove a page from Google Search?

No. robots.txt controls crawler access and is not a reliable URL-removal mechanism. If a page should not appear in Search, do not assume that blocking crawling will accomplish that. Check the page’s indexing directives and the status reported for its exact URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which sitemap format should I choose, and how large can a file be?

Google supports standard sitemap formats and does not express a preference. XML is versatile, and larger inventories can use multiple sitemap files or a sitemap index. Google documents a maximum of 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per sitemap file. Choose the format and organization that fit your inventory, and keep the listed URLs accurate.

The Bottom Line

Help Google by making important pages reachable through ordinary links, listing only preferred URLs in a maintained sitemap, allowing access to pages and rendering resources, and keeping canonical signals consistent. Use distinct URLs for distinct JavaScript content, then diagnose problems with Search Console and server logs. These practices remove common obstacles, but Google alone decides when to crawl and whether to index or serve a page.
