You can improve the chances that an AI-assisted search feature can find and use your pages, but you cannot make citation reliable or guarantee it. Google says eligibility for links in AI Overviews and AI Mode starts with ordinary Google Search eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a search snippet. That is a prerequisite, not a promise that Google will select it. ChatGPT Search and Bing describe different systems and provide different levels of guidance, so there is no single optimization recipe for every AI search engine.
What does it mean for an AI search engine to cite your website?
A citation is a link or other source reference that accompanies an AI-generated answer. For a site owner, three separate outcomes matter: whether a crawler can access a page, whether the platform considers it eligible to appear, and whether a particular answer actually cites it. Improving the first two can make the third possible; neither establishes that the third will happen.
“AI search” is not one shared index or retrieval pipeline. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as Search features grounded in its existing Search systems, including retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out. OpenAI’s user-facing help explains that ChatGPT Search may use search providers and rewrite queries. Bing’s available information in this article is narrower: its search-result summaries describe an AI Performance report, but do not provide enough detail to explain all of Bing’s citation or reporting behavior.

Make important pages accessible, useful, clear, and eligible for ordinary search; then measure what each platform actually exposes.

These distinctions also help set a sensible expectation for a site owner. Crawl access means a system can retrieve a page; indexation means a search engine has included it in its index; eligibility means it can be considered under a platform’s documented rules; and a citation is the result of a particular answer-generation process. Passing one stage does not prove that the next one will follow. A page can be indexed and still not be selected for a particular question, while a citation observed in one answer does not establish permanent visibility.
Start with the eligibility gate, not an AI-specific trick
Google’s AI features guidance, last updated December 10, 2025, says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be considered as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google also says there are no additional technical requirements for these features. Crawling, indexing, and serving are not guaranteed, even when a page follows its guidance.
This is a useful diagnostic order. If a page is blocked or absent from Google’s index, adding special markup or rewriting its headline for an AI answer will not solve the basic discovery problem. First establish whether the intended page can be fetched and appears in ordinary search; then improve its usefulness and clarity.

Google describes its generative AI features as rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. Its explanation of query fan-out means a complex question may be broken into related searches, with information gathered across those searches to help form an answer. For publishers, that is a reason to make a page genuinely useful and clear on its subject, not a reason to manufacture a collection of pages for every possible wording of a query. The public description does not give site owners a formula for predicting which supporting link will be chosen.
Build and audit a page in a practical order
1. Check access for crawlers and users
-
Review robots.txt and confirm that the relevant page and resources are not disallowed. Also check access controls beyond robots.txt: CDN rules, hosting security settings, authentication, and other infrastructure can prevent a crawler from retrieving a page.
-
Use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection to investigate what Google received for an important URL and whether it is indexed. If it is not indexed or cannot be served with a normal search snippet, diagnose that before treating AI citation as the problem.

Check that the page is reachable from relevant pages on your own site. Add clear internal links so visitors and crawlers have a route to it; a page’s existence in a sitemap alone does not explain its relevance or make it easy to discover.
-
Verify that the main information is available as accessible text. Google can process JavaScript when it is not blocked, but Google notes that JavaScript SEO can be more complex. If content depends on JavaScript, check what is rendered and whether the important text can be accessed.
When investigating a missing page, work from the simplest causes outward. Check whether the page loads for an ordinary visitor, whether a login or security challenge stands between it and a crawler, whether robots.txt blocks it, and whether internal links point to the intended URL. Then inspect Google’s view of the URL in Search Console. These checks identify access and indexing problems; they do not compel Google to index or serve the page.
2. Make the page answer a real reader need
Give the page a distinct reason to exist: original reporting, practical detail, genuine expertise, or first-hand experience where it is actually available. A page that merely paraphrases information already common across the web adds little value for the reader and gives the publisher no sound basis for implying special authority.

Google’s generative-search guidance emphasizes unique, valuable content rather than commodity pages made to attract AI responses. Avoid publishing large batches of near-duplicates, rewriting material solely to influence AI answers, or manufacturing third-party mentions. Those tactics do not establish usefulness or trustworthy sourcing.
Explain the work behind claims when it matters. A product review, for example, should describe tests and methods that really took place; it should not suggest hands-on use if none occurred. Make authorship clear where readers would expect it and provide accurate author background. Google’s people-first content guidance, last updated October 5, 2026, cautions against deceptive creator profiles, including fabricated credentials or identities.
Apply the same honesty to AI-assisted writing. If readers would reasonably want to know how a piece was created, explain the process in a way that helps them assess the work. The useful question is not whether a tool was involved, but whether the page offers accurate, valuable work for visitors and represents its reporting, expertise, and authorship truthfully. Avoid creating large volumes of pages primarily to attract search visits or to influence an AI answer.
3. Organize the content for comprehension
Use descriptive headings, coherent sections, and readable paragraphs to help people find and understand the answer. Keep related steps or caveats together. This is sound editorial practice, not a requirement to divide the page into arbitrary small “AI chunks.” Google says there is no ideal page length for its generative search features and no need to chunk content for them.

Keep the key explanation in the page itself rather than relying on a chart image, a video, or an interface interaction alone. Add images or video when they genuinely help users, and follow relevant image and video SEO practices. Semantic structure supports readability and accessibility; Google says perfect semantic HTML is not required for AI features.
There is no prescribed page length to target for Google’s generative features. A short page may be the best answer to a narrow question; a longer guide may be appropriate when the task involves steps, exceptions, or comparisons. Make the page as complete as the reader’s task requires, rather than adding length to meet an imagined AI threshold. Likewise, do not split a coherent explanation into many thin pages just to create more URLs for a retrieval system.
4. Keep technical signals consistent
-
Make the main content easy to distinguish from navigation and other page elements, and provide a good experience across devices. Reduce latency where practical.
-
Reduce unwanted duplicate content where feasible, especially when multiple URLs present substantially the same page without a useful distinction.

If you use structured data, ensure it accurately matches visible page content. Google says structured data is not required for its AI features and there is no special AI schema. Markup may support broader SEO or rich-result eligibility, but it cannot create a factual claim absent from the page.
-
For ecommerce or local businesses, keep relevant Merchant Center feeds and Business Profile details current. Google says these can help products, services, and business details appear in AI responses and other Search results; they are relevant business data, not a citation guarantee.
Technical clarity is about making the page and its claims understandable and reachable, not adding a private set of AI-only signals. A structured-data field that says something different from the visible page creates inconsistency rather than trust. Review markup when page details change, and remove or update it if it no longer represents what a visitor can see.

For JavaScript-heavy sites, do not assume that the presence of text in an application state or after a user interaction means it is equally accessible to search systems. Google says it can process JavaScript when it is not blocked, but JavaScript SEO may be more complex. Verify that the important content is rendered and available rather than hiding the answer behind a control that is not necessary for reading it.
What the official guidance establishes—and what it does not
| Platform or feature | What the available official guidance says | What a site owner should not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Google Search to be eligible as a supporting link. Google says there are no extra technical requirements and points site owners to established SEO fundamentals and Search Console reporting. | Eligibility, indexation, schema, or compliance does not guarantee selection or citation. The rule is not evidence of identical requirements on other platforms. |
| ChatGPT Search | OpenAI’s user-facing help explains that ChatGPT Search can show citations and advises readers to open sources and verify whether they support the answer, are current, and are authoritative. It warns that results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. | This user-facing explanation is not a comprehensive publisher optimization guide or a promise of how a particular page will be retrieved. |
| Bing AI Performance | Bing Webmaster search-result summaries describe an AI Performance report with pages cited in AI answers, visibility trends, and grounding queries. | Detailed instructions and metric definitions are not established here. Confirm the current report interface and definitions in Bing Webmaster Tools before relying on specific measurements. |
This comparison is deliberately about the evidence and controls available to site owners, not a ranking of which platform is most likely to cite a page. The platforms’ public descriptions do not establish a common retrieval system or a comparable citation rate.
The comparison also illustrates an important difference in the kind of guidance available. Google provides a publisher-facing description of eligibility and points to Search Console; OpenAI’s cited help page explains what people using ChatGPT Search may see and how they should verify sources. Bing’s available reporting description is more limited here. Do not turn a user-facing explanation into a publisher ranking guide, or a report summary into detailed instructions that the platform has not established.
Measure visibility without treating it as a promise
For Google, use Search Console’s Search performance reporting to review search traffic that includes AI features; Google’s generative AI guidance also points to Search Console reporting for visibility in those features. URL Inspection is useful for investigating an individual page’s discovery and indexing state. Use the reports to observe outcomes, not to claim that a particular editorial change caused them unless you have evidence for that conclusion.
For Bing, check whether the AI Performance report is available in Bing Webmaster Tools and read the current definitions shown there. The described report includes cited pages, visibility trends, and grounding queries, but the available official search summaries do not establish detailed setup steps or explain the metrics sufficiently to prescribe a fixed reporting workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For ChatGPT Search, inspect citations in actual answers relevant to your site and open the cited pages. Check that the cited source supports the accompanying claim and is current. OpenAI specifically tells users to verify sources because citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A citation appearing once is evidence of that result, not a durable placement or a general performance guarantee.
Where a platform exposes the data, keep these outcomes separate in your own reporting:
-
Eligibility: whether the page is crawlable, indexed, and qualified for the platform’s documented search features.
-
Visibility: whether the page appears or is cited in reported AI answers, and how that changes over time.

Referral visits: visits arriving from a platform, where analytics can identify them.
-
Reader outcomes: whether visitors complete the task the page is intended to support.
This is a measurement framework for making decisions, not a claim that any one metric is a ranking factor. Platform reports and analytics may not expose every stage of the process.
Use the measures to ask practical questions: Is the page accessible and indexed? Is it appearing in the surfaces a platform reports? Are citations sending useful visitors? Do those visitors find what they came for? Each question concerns a different outcome, so avoid combining them into a single score that suggests a citation is equivalent to a visit or a successful reader experience.
Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are relevant diagnostic tools for their respective platforms. For a local business or online shop, current Business Profile details or Merchant Center feeds may also help keep business and product information accurate in Google’s ecosystem. These tools help you review and maintain information; none is a signup path or a paid service required to qualify for a citation.
Do not spend time on unsupported citation hacks
Google’s guidance directly rejects several ideas often presented as special requirements for its generative features. It says Google Search ignores llms.txt for visibility, and that special AI files, AI-only markup, content chunking, and rewriting pages for AI are unnecessary. That statement is Google-specific; it does not establish how every other service treats every file or signal. There is no reason in the available guidance to add these as Google citation prerequisites.
Likewise, do not treat exact-match long-tail coverage as a universal recipe, inflate author credentials, or create inauthentic third-party mentions. Focus on accessible pages and trustworthy, useful content. Search systems can change, and none of the reviewed guidance promises that following a checklist will result in a citation.
Be especially cautious of claims that a single technical change guarantees inclusion across platforms. Google’s statements about its own AI features do not document ChatGPT Search or Bing, and OpenAI’s user-facing guidance does not promise a publisher a specific retrieval or citation outcome. Treat platform claims separately, check current official documentation when implementing a platform-specific change, and avoid paying for generic “AI citation” products on the strength of an unsupported guarantee.
A compact audit checklist
-
The page is accessible to users and is not unintentionally blocked by robots.txt, infrastructure rules, or access controls.
-
Google Search Console’s URL Inspection shows what Google received; the page is indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet if you are assessing Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.
-
Relevant internal links make the page discoverable within the site.
-
The principal answer is available in accessible text, with clear sections and no dependence on inaccessible interactions.

The page contributes original, accurate value and does not pretend to offer reporting, experience, testing, or authorship that it does not have.
-
Structured data, if present, agrees with visible content; business feeds and profiles are maintained when relevant.
-
Search Console, applicable Bing reporting, actual citation checks, referral analytics, and reader outcomes are interpreted as distinct signals.
For an ongoing audit, revisit both the page and the platform’s reporting rather than assuming a one-time technical check settles the question. Recheck indexation after substantial changes, verify that important details and structured data remain accurate, and review the current definitions of any visibility metrics you use. A well-maintained page can remain eligible and useful, but changes in a platform’s systems or answer behavior are outside a publisher’s control.

The realistic standard for success
A well-built page can be easy to crawl, eligible for ordinary search, clear to readers, and worth citing. That is the attainable standard. “Reliably cite” is not something a site owner can ensure: Google explicitly says crawling, indexing, and serving are not guaranteed, while OpenAI warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Build for people and technical eligibility, then verify platform-specific outcomes rather than promising them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google require special schema or AI markup for AI Overviews and AI Mode?
No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for its AI features and no special AI schema is required. Structured data may support broader SEO or rich-result eligibility, but it should accurately match visible page content.
Will being indexed guarantee that Google cites my page?
No. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be considered as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says crawling, indexing, and serving are not guaranteed, and eligibility is not selection.
Should I add llms.txt or split my article into small AI chunks?
Google says Search ignores llms.txt for visibility and that special AI files, content chunking, and rewriting pages for AI are unnecessary for its generative features. That guidance is specific to Google; it does not establish another platform’s behavior.

How can I check whether a page is eligible for Google AI features?
Use Search Console’s URL Inspection to investigate what Google received and whether the page is indexed. Google’s stated eligibility prerequisite is that the page can appear in ordinary Search with a snippet. Passing that check does not guarantee a citation.
How should I verify a citation in ChatGPT Search?
Open the cited page and check that it supports the claim, is current, and is an authoritative source for that claim. OpenAI warns that citations and results may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.
Can I measure AI citations in Bing Webmaster Tools?
Bing Webmaster search-result summaries describe an AI Performance report that includes cited pages, visibility trends, and grounding queries. Check the current report and metric definitions in Bing Webmaster Tools, since the available description does not establish detailed setup instructions.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Make pages crawlable, discoverable, accurate, useful, and clear; verify Google’s ordinary Search eligibility when assessing Google AI features; and measure each platform only through the reporting and citations it actually exposes. These practices improve the conditions for being considered, not the odds by a guaranteed amount—and no checklist can promise a citation.
