The reliable way to customize a tablet home screen is to identify the platform first, then touch and hold an empty area of the screen. That opens the editing controls, but the labels and available options differ on iPad, standard Android tablets, and Samsung Galaxy tablets.

Use the section for your device below. You can change wallpaper, place apps, add widgets, make folders, manage pages, and adjust the visual layout without installing another app. Before following a path, check the tablet model and software version because Apple documents regional and model availability, Google marks some features as Android 14 or later, and Samsung notes that menus can vary by carrier, software version, and model.

Identify your tablet before changing anything

Look at the tablet’s branding and software. An iPad runs iPadOS; tablets from many manufacturers use Google’s Android; Samsung Galaxy tablets use Android with Samsung’s own Home screen controls. A menu shown in one platform’s instructions may not exist on another.

  • iPad: Apple’s current guides document a Home screen flow that uses Edit and Customize. Some appearance features depend on the iPad model or region. See Apple’s Home Screen customization guide and its iPad personalization guide.
  • Android tablet: Google’s instructions cover app placement, shortcuts, widgets, folders, Home screen pages, and the difference between removing a shortcut and uninstalling an app. Google flags some steps as requiring Android 14 or later; check Google’s Android Home screen help.
  • Samsung Galaxy tablet: Samsung adds controls for page order, the main page, grid and layout choices, Galaxy shortcuts, widgets, folders, and wallpaper. Its tablet guide was last updated June 29, 2026, and names Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab S8 among compatible examples; Samsung still says that exact options vary by model and software. Use Samsung’s Galaxy tablet guide and its shortcut instructions.

Open the Home screen editing controls

iPad

  1. Go to the Home Screen.
  2. Touch and hold an empty part of the background until the app icons jiggle.
  3. Tap Edit, then tap Customize.

The Customize panel is where the documented iPad appearance controls live. If you hold an icon instead of an empty area, you may open that app’s quick actions rather than the Home screen editor.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Android tablet

For widgets and many layout actions, touch and hold an empty Home screen area. Tap Widgets when that option appears. To place an app, open the app list, touch and hold the app, drag it toward the Home screen, and release it where you want it. The exact gesture for opening the app list depends on the tablet’s launcher.

Samsung Galaxy tablet

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Use the edit controls that appear. Tap Home screen settings for layout and grid choices, or choose Wallpapers, Widgets, or another available control.

Samsung’s labels and screen arrangement can change with the tablet model, carrier software, and One UI version, so use the wording shown on your device rather than forcing a phone-only tutorial onto a tablet.

Customize an iPad Home Screen

Change icon and widget appearance

After entering Edit > Customize, iPadOS provides documented choices for visual treatment. You can select light, dark, or automatic appearance, and you can apply clear or tinted styling to icons and widgets. You can also choose smaller or larger icons. The larger setting hides app names, so it creates a cleaner grid but makes identification depend more on the icon itself. These controls are described in Apple’s iPad Home Screen instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Automatic when you want the Home Screen to follow the system’s light or dark setting. Choose a fixed light or dark appearance when the Home Screen should stay consistent regardless of the rest of the interface. Clear or tinted treatments change the visual emphasis of icons and widgets; they do not replace the underlying apps.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Change the wallpaper

  1. Enter Home screen editing mode by holding the background.
  2. Tap Edit, then Customize.
  3. Choose Edit Wallpaper.
  4. Select the wallpaper source and apply the adjustments offered by your iPadOS version.

Apple notes that wallpaper and appearance options can depend on region and iPad model. If Edit Wallpaper or a particular style is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; verify the model and iPadOS release against Apple’s current guidance at Make your iPad your own.

Apps and widgets on iPad

The Apple page cited above concentrates on Home screen appearance and wallpaper rather than reproducing every widget-insertion path. Use the edit mode described above, then follow the widget or app control that your iPad displays. Do not substitute Android’s Widgets menu for an iPad menu: the names and placement controls are platform-specific. If your goal is only to restyle an existing widget, the documented Customize controls are the relevant starting point.

Customize a standard Android tablet

Place an app on the Home screen

  1. Open the tablet’s complete app list.
  2. Touch and hold the app you want.
  3. Drag it toward the Home screen and release it in the desired position.

Moving an app this way creates or repositions a Home screen icon; it does not move the app’s installed files. If a long press exposes app shortcuts, you can drag one of those shortcuts to the Home screen as well. Shortcuts are optional actions supplied by the app, so not every app offers them.

Add and position a widget

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Choose an app to see the widgets it provides.
  4. Touch and hold the widget, drag it to the Home screen, and release it where the grid accepts it.

Google describes widgets as items that show information without opening apps. A widget may require a clear rectangle of space; move icons or choose another page if the placement outline will not fit.

Resize a widget when the widget allows it

  1. Touch and hold the widget already on the Home screen.
  2. Release it when resize handles or an outline appears.
  3. Drag the available edges to the size you need, then tap outside the widget.

Resize handles are conditional. If they do not appear, that widget or launcher does not expose a resize control, so changing the grid or choosing a different widget size is the available route. Google’s feature notes and Android-version caveats are on Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens.

Make a folder

  1. Touch and hold one app or shortcut.
  2. Drag it directly onto another app or shortcut.
  3. Release when the second item is highlighted.
  4. Open the resulting folder to rename it if your launcher offers a name field.

Folders reduce visual clutter while keeping related apps together. You can move additional items into the same folder by dragging them onto it.

Add or remove a Home screen page

To create another page, drag an app or shortcut toward the right edge until a blank page appears, then release it. To remove a page, move everything off that page; Google’s instructions state that an empty page is removed. This approach preserves the apps and only changes where their Home screen entries live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove an icon without uninstalling the app

Read the action label before confirming. Google distinguishes Remove, which takes an item off the Home screen, from Uninstall, which removes the app from the device. Use Remove when you are decluttering but still want the app installed; choose Uninstall only when you intend to delete the app itself. The distinction is part of Google’s official instructions at Google Android Help.

Customize a Samsung Galaxy tablet

Adjust pages, the main page, and the grid

Touch and hold an empty Home screen area to enter Samsung’s edit view. From there, Samsung documents controls for adding, removing, and reordering Home screen pages, and for selecting which page is the main page. The same edit view provides Home screen settings, where supported Galaxy tablets expose layout and grid choices. A denser grid fits more icons; a looser grid leaves more open space around icons and widgets.

Samsung’s tablet-specific instructions, including the page controls and layout options, are at Customize the Home screens on your Galaxy tablet. The guide’s compatibility examples include Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Tab S8, but its menus are not a guarantee that every older or carrier-customized model has identical controls.

Add an app or shortcut

  1. Open Apps to view installed applications.
  2. Touch and hold the app.
  3. Choose Add to Home, or keep holding and drag the icon to the desired Home screen position.

Samsung also supports app shortcuts where an app supplies them. A shortcut is a Home screen entry for a particular action, not a second installation of the app. Samsung’s separate guide explains adding app shortcuts and reminds users that settings vary by carrier, software version, and model: Add app shortcuts on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add and resize a widget

  1. Touch and hold an empty Home screen area.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Select the app and widget style you want.
  4. Drag the widget onto the page and release it in an open area.
  5. If edge handles appear, drag them to resize; tap outside the widget to finish.

As on other Android tablets, resizing is available only when the widget and launcher provide handles. A missing handle means that particular widget is fixed at its offered size.

Create a folder

  1. Touch and hold an app icon.
  2. Drag it onto another app icon.
  3. Release when the folder preview appears.
  4. Use the folder’s name control if you want a label such as “Reading” or “Work.”

Change Galaxy tablet wallpaper

  1. Touch and hold an empty Home screen area.
  2. Tap Wallpapers.
  3. Choose a built-in wallpaper or select an image from Gallery.
  4. Adjust the preview if Samsung offers positioning controls.
  5. Apply the wallpaper to the Home screen, or to the locations offered by your model.

The wallpaper source and final confirmation labels can vary with Galaxy software. Samsung’s guide is the authoritative path for the tablet family and software version shown on your device.

What each platform documents at a glance

Task iPad Android tablet Samsung Galaxy tablet
Enter Home screen editing Hold the background, tap Edit, then Customize. Hold an empty area; tap Widgets for widget work. Hold an empty area; use edit controls or Home screen settings.
Icon appearance Size, light/dark/automatic, clear, and tinted treatments are documented; larger icons hide names. Google’s cited page focuses on placement and organization rather than icon styling. Grid and layout controls are documented; icon-style availability varies by model.
Wallpaper path Edit > Customize > Edit Wallpaper. The cited Google page does not document a wallpaper path. Hold empty space, tap Wallpapers, choose built-in or Gallery content, then apply it.
Widgets The cited Apple page documents appearance controls; widget insertion labels depend on the iPadOS screen shown. Hold empty space, tap Widgets, select and drag; resize when handles appear. Hold empty space, tap Widgets, drag, and resize with edge handles when available.
Folders and pages The Apple pages cited here do not document the full page-management sequence. Drag one item onto another for a folder; drag an item right to create a page and empty a page to remove it. Drag apps together for folders; edit mode supports adding, removing, reordering, and choosing the main page.

A practical order for a clean layout

Customizing everything at once can make it difficult to tell which change caused a problem. Work from the largest visual decisions to the smallest:

  1. Set the wallpaper first. A busy image can make small icons and text harder to read; a simple background leaves more contrast for widgets.
  2. Choose the grid or icon size. On iPad, decide whether larger icons and hidden names suit you. On Galaxy tablets, set the available grid or layout before placing many items.
  3. Keep the first page for frequent actions. Place the apps and one or two genuinely useful widgets there, then move occasional-use apps to later pages.
  4. Group by task. Drag related apps into folders such as communication, travel, study, or media. Folder names should describe the task rather than the company that made an app.
  5. Remove only what you mean to remove. On Android, choose Remove for a Home screen cleanup and reserve Uninstall for deleting the app.
  6. Test in both orientations if you rotate the tablet. A layout that looks balanced in portrait may leave a large gap in landscape; move a widget or use a different page if your launcher allows it.

Fix common customization problems

The edit menu does not appear

Make sure you are holding an empty part of the Home screen, not an app icon or widget. Release only after the editing controls appear. If the controls still differ from these instructions, check the tablet model and software version: Apple cites model and regional variation, Google marks some functions as Android 14 or later, and Samsung lists carrier, software, and model differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A control named in a guide is missing

Do not substitute a different platform’s path. On iPad, Customize and Edit Wallpaper depend on the documented iPadOS interface and availability. On Samsung tablets, the same feature may be placed under Home screen settings or another edit-mode button. Update references to the exact labels visible on your device and consult the platform support page linked in the relevant section.

A widget will not fit or resize

Move other icons away and try a larger empty area. If no resize handles appear after touching and holding the widget, that widget does not expose resizing on your current launcher. Select another offered widget size or place it on a less crowded page.

An app disappeared after cleanup

On Android, check whether you selected Remove or Uninstall. Remove deletes only the Home screen entry; the app remains installed and can be placed again from the app list. Uninstall removes the app from the device and requires reinstalling it if you need it later.

The wallpaper looks different after applying it

Preview and crop behavior can vary by screen orientation, tablet model, and software. Reopen the platform’s wallpaper editor, adjust the image position, and apply it again. On Galaxy tablets, choose whether the available confirmation applies the image to the Home screen or another location offered by the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final checklist

  • Confirmed whether the tablet is an iPad, a standard Android tablet, or a Samsung Galaxy tablet.
  • Checked the model and software version when a menu or feature was missing.
  • Entered edit mode by holding an empty Home screen area.
  • Changed wallpaper through the platform-specific control.
  • Placed apps and widgets only after selecting the grid or icon size.
  • Used folders and extra pages to keep the first page uncluttered.
  • Verified whether an Android action says Remove or Uninstall before confirming.
