To improve the chances that AI shopping experiences can find your products, keep product data complete and current, distribute it through the supported catalog or feed for each channel, and check that intended crawlers can reach your public store pages. There is no universal registration step, and none of these actions guarantees a recommendation, ranking, or sale. Most importantly, product discovery and checkout are separate capabilities.
How AI shopping services find products
There is no single AI shopping directory or feed that covers every service. OpenAI documents product-feed onboarding for ChatGPT, while Shopify describes discovery through Shopify Catalog, activated sales channels, and open-web crawling. The route depends on your commerce platform, channel, and eligibility.
For Shopify stores, the Shopify Catalog and product discovery guide explains how catalog data is structured for AI channels. Shopify identifies ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta among its agentic storefront surfaces; access and purchase behavior differ by channel. OpenAI’s feed onboarding guide describes a separate direct-feed route. OpenAI says product-feed onboarding in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners, so a merchant should not assume that submitting a request guarantees access.
Make each product record clear and accurate
Start with the products that matter most to your store. Review the product and variant records rather than relying on a generic store description. Use specific titles and factual descriptions, make options unambiguous, and ensure that each record points to the correct product page and image.

- Product and variant title, description, and options
- Product URL and clear product images
- Current price, currency, and availability
- Brand and other relevant attributes required by the channel
Those fields are an operational checklist, not a universal schema. The OpenAI product specification sets requirements and formatting rules for its supported feed formats. A spreadsheet or JSON export is not automatically compatible: follow the format and validation rules for the integration you actually use.
Keep feed data synchronized when prices, inventory, or product details change. OpenAI recommends a regular full feed and API updates where appropriate. Its specification also warns that sale-window or expiration dates in an upload do not replace updating current price and availability. A feed containing stale stock or pricing can misrepresent what the store can fulfill.

Choose and configure the right channel
If you use OpenAI’s direct product-feed route
Review the access requirements, approved integration method, supported market configuration, required fields, and validation process in OpenAI’s onboarding documentation. OpenAI documents file-upload and API options; it generally recommends a daily full feed by file upload, with API updates during the day where appropriate. The standard upload specification targets the US. Confirm separately with OpenAI whether additional markets are supported for your integration.
If you use Shopify
Check that your store and products are eligible, then review which agentic storefront channels are available and activated for your store. Shopify Catalog structures product titles, descriptions, options, images, prices, availability, and other attributes for AI channels, and updates pricing and inventory continuously. If you rely on custom fields, product groupings, or unusual option logic, verify how those values map into the catalog rather than assuming the storefront presentation carries over unchanged. Compare routes on the operational details
Before committing engineering or merchandising time, compare the documented terms that affect your store:
- Whether approval or other eligibility requirements apply
- Which product fields the route supports and how they map
- How quickly updates flow and how you control them
- Which markets and currencies are supported
- Whether the channel offers discovery, a referral to your site, or checkout in the AI experience
- What work is required to keep inventory and orders reconciled
The vendor documentation does not establish one route as best for every merchant. Channel availability and checkout features can change, so confirm current terms for your platform and region.

Check crawler access without confusing it with catalog distribution
Open-web crawling and catalog syndication are distinct paths. Shopify says its robots.txt rules are advisory and that not all crawlers must follow them. Review the file and any bot-management, firewall, or proxy rules for unintended blocks if you want public pages to be crawlable. Do not apply a blanket allow or deny rule without considering your privacy, licensing, and channel preferences.

Shopify stores serve /agents.md, /llms.txt, and /llms-full.txt by default. Shopify says these files provide store context such as the store name and URL, sitemap, policies, and discovery endpoints. They supplement rather than replace Shopify Catalog. If you use another commerce platform, check its current documentation for supported discovery mechanisms; do not assume those Shopify paths exist on your site or are used by every AI service.
Findability does not mean checkout is enabled
A product can be discoverable in an AI shopping experience without customers being able to complete the purchase there. Shopify describes ChatGPT as discovery-focused: customers can proceed to the merchant site in an in-app browser or a new tab. Other Shopify-supported channels may offer direct checkout when activated, subject to eligibility and rollout.
OpenAI’s agentic commerce key concepts treat feeds and checkout as separate parts of the system. An in-channel checkout requires additional merchant-side work for matters such as order validation, fulfillment, taxes, payment risk, and payment processing. Plan for those operational responsibilities separately from product discovery.

Measure the setup, not a promised ranking
After configuring a feed or channel, verify that records pass the relevant validation process, that variants and destinations are correct, and that updated prices and stock reach the channel as expected. Check the actual customer path for each enabled surface: a product listing, a referral to your site, or an in-channel purchase flow. Treat visibility and sales as outcomes to monitor, not results guaranteed by a feed, schema, crawler rule, or discovery file.
