Set a non-empty player join password, save the setting, and restart the Soulmask server. In a hosting panel, use the Server Password field under Config or Startup. On a self-hosted server, add -PSW="your-password" to the launch command. The player password is separate from the administrator password, -adminpsw.
What a private Soulmask server actually does
A password-protected Soulmask server requires every player to enter the join password before connecting. That lets you restrict access to friends, a community, or an invited group instead of accepting anyone who can find the server address.

“Private” in this procedure means password-gated access. The documented setup does not establish that the server disappears from every server browser, query service, or other discovery mechanism. A server may still be visible while rejecting players who do not know the password.
Shockbyte describes the purpose plainly: “Making your server private allows you to control who can join by restricting access with a password.” Its procedure was published November 12, 2024.

The control surface changes, but the result is the same: a non-empty player password must be loaded by the game server process.
Set a password in a managed hosting panel
Panel labels differ between providers and may change with the panel software. Look for a field mapped to the Soulmask -PSW startup argument. The following sequence covers the documented Config and Startup layouts.

Use the panel’s stop button or console control and wait until the process is fully stopped. Editing a value while the process is still running can leave the active instance unchanged.
- Open the configuration area. Select Config on panels that organize game settings there. On panels that expose launch arguments, open Startup.
- Find the player-password field. It may be labelled Server Password or represented by a startup variable associated with
-PSW. - Enter a non-empty password. Use a private value that you can distribute to intended players. Do not paste the administrator password into this field.
- Save the setting. Confirm that the panel reports the change as saved. If the panel displays a generated command line, check that the value is attached to
-PSW. - Restart the server. Start it from the panel or console and wait for the normal ready state.
- Test from a player account. Connect with the new join password. Then test once without it, or with an incorrect value, to confirm that access is rejected.
XGamingServer documents a Startup variable mapped to -PSW; its instructions state that leaving the field empty makes the server public and that the operator should restart from the console after setting it. The practical rule is therefore simple: an empty player-password field means no password gate, while a saved non-empty field takes effect after a restart.

Configure a self-hosted Windows server
On Windows, the launch parameters are normally stored in StartServer.bat. Make a backup of the file before editing it so you can restore the previous command if a typo prevents startup.
- Stop the Soulmask dedicated-server process.
- Open
StartServer.batin a text editor. - Locate the line that launches the server executable or calls the server command.
- Add
-PSW="your-password"as an additional argument. Keep the quotation marks when the password contains spaces or other characters that the shell could interpret. - Save the batch file and close the editor.
- Run the batch file again and wait for the server to finish starting.
- Give the join password only to the players who should be allowed in.
A documented pattern looks like this:

Keep your existing values unless you intentionally want to change them; the privacy-related addition is -PSW.
Configure a self-hosted Linux server
Linux installations use StartServer.sh for the launch command. The argument is the same as on Windows, but the shell script must be executable and the server must be restarted after editing.

- Stop the running Soulmask server service or process.
- Open
StartServer.shwith an editor. - Add
-PSW="your-password"to the command that starts the dedicated server. - Save the script and verify that the file still has execute permission if your deployment relies on running it directly.
- Start the service or script again.
- Test a connection with the new password and a second connection using an incorrect password.
Do not put the real password in a public code repository, a screenshot, a forum post, or a support ticket. If the script is managed in version control, protect the file or inject the secret through your deployment system instead of publishing it.
Use the password variable in Docker or Podman
Containerized deployments commonly expose the player password as the SERVER_PASSWORD environment variable. Set that variable in the container’s environment or env file, preserve the deployment’s existing game and query port mappings, and then restart or recreate the container so the new environment is loaded.
- Stop the existing container or prepare a replacement deployment.
- Add
SERVER_PASSWORDwith a non-empty value to the environment configuration used by the container. - Keep the configured game and query ports unchanged unless you are deliberately changing network settings.
- Recreate or restart the container. Merely editing an env file does not change variables inside an already running container.
- Check the container logs for a normal server startup, then test with the correct and incorrect passwords.
Container documentation also discusses separate game and query ports and router port forwarding. Password protection does not remove the need to expose the required ports to intended players. If the server is unreachable after a redeploy, check the container’s port mappings and the router or firewall rules before changing the password again.

Do not confuse the player password with the admin password
Soulmask uses two different credentials. Mixing them is a common cause of accidental administrator access or a server that appears unprotected.

Set both values independently if you need administration tools. A player who knows only the -PSW value should be able to join but should not receive the administrator credential. Conversely, changing -adminpsw does not create a player join gate; you must set -PSW or SERVER_PASSWORD.

Choose the method based on who operates the infrastructure. A panel reduces process and networking work, while self-hosting gives you direct control but leaves updates, uptime, firewall rules, backups, and secret handling in your hands.

Verify that the server is really password-protected
A successful save in a control panel is not proof that the running process loaded the value. Verify the effective behavior after every change.

- Confirm the server was stopped before the setting was edited.
- Confirm the saved panel field, batch file, shell script, or environment file contains a non-empty player password.
- Restart the server, service, or container.
- Connect from an intended player account using the exact password.
- Attempt a connection with no password or an incorrect password from a separate client.
- Inspect the startup command or container configuration if the incorrect-password test still succeeds.
- After testing, remove the password from chat logs, screenshots, and temporary notes that do not need to retain it.
Record the time of the change and which deployment surface you edited. That small operational note helps distinguish a failed password change from a client using a cached server entry or an administrator connecting through a separate management path.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server remains public
- Check that the field is not blank or composed only of spaces.
- Confirm you edited the active server instance, not an unused configuration or an old container.
- Verify that the launch command contains
-PSW, or that the container receivedSERVER_PASSWORD. - Stop and restart the server after saving. The documented workflows require a restart for the change to apply.
Players cannot join with the correct password
- Have the player re-enter the value exactly as configured, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Check for quotation marks accidentally becoming part of the stored value when editing a script or env file.
- Confirm the client is connecting to the intended server and not another instance with a similar name.
- Review startup logs for an argument or environment-variable parsing error.
The server will not start after editing a script
- Restore the backup and confirm the server starts without the new argument.
- Add only the documented
-PSW="your-password"argument, then test again. - Check shell or batch-file quoting, especially if the chosen password contains spaces or characters interpreted by the operating system.
- On Linux, verify that the launch script remains executable and that the service points to the file you edited.
The password works but administrators lose access
Joining and administration are separate operations. Ensure the administrator credential remains configured through -adminpsw and has not been replaced with the player value. Give the admin password only to trusted operators.
The container restarts but the old password remains
Inspect the environment inside the newly running container and compare it with the env file used by the deployment command. Recreating a container from an unchanged compose file or from a different env file will preserve the old value. Restart or recreate the instance that actually serves the public ports.
Password-handling practices for a private server
- Use separate secrets. Never reuse the administrator password as the player password.
- Share narrowly. Send the join password only to intended players and avoid public server listings that include it.
- Protect configuration files. Restrict access to batch files, shell scripts, env files, backups, and hosting-panel accounts.
- Remove exposed values. If the password appears in a public screenshot, repository, log, or support post, change it and restart the server.
- Rotate after group changes. When someone should no longer have access, replace the player password and distribute the new value to the remaining group.
- Keep network controls separate. A password does not replace firewall rules, router configuration, updates, backups, or account security.
What changes when you rotate the password
Changing the player password changes the value required for new join attempts after the next restart or redeploy. Tell current players when the change will occur so they can update their saved connection details. If a player continues to connect without entering the new value, verify that they are not using an already authenticated session, an administrator path, or a different server instance.
