The most effective way to extend a phone battery’s useful life is to control heat and avoid keeping the battery at an extreme charge level for long periods. Keep the phone below the manufacturer’s temperature limits, recharge before it reaches empty, enable the built-in optimized or adaptive charging feature, use a compatible charger and cable, and store an unused phone at roughly half charge. These habits slow chemical ageing; they cannot reverse capacity that the battery has already lost.
What actually ages a lithium-ion phone battery
A lithium-ion battery loses capacity through chemical ageing. Apple describes battery age as the result of a combination of temperature history and charging pattern, rather than one isolated charging event. Every battery eventually holds less energy and may deliver less peak power, but your routine affects how quickly that happens.
- Heat: The most controllable risk. Apple warns that using or charging an iPhone above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Samsung lists 0°–35°C as the optimal Galaxy usage range and warns that extended use or storage above 35°C or below 0°C accelerates deterioration.
- Long periods at full charge: Staying at 100% for many hours adds stress. Optimized and adaptive charging features delay the final part of charging when the phone predicts that you will remain plugged in.
- Deep discharge: Regularly running the battery completely empty is unnecessary. Partial charging is normal for lithium-ion cells.
- Normal calendar ageing: Even a carefully treated battery gradually loses capacity. Settings can reduce stress, but they cannot restore chemically lost capacity.
The daily routine that gives the battery the best chance
- Keep the phone cool while it charges. Move it out of direct sun, a hot car, a warm pocket under heavy use, or any enclosed space where heat cannot escape. If a case traps heat, remove it temporarily.
- Recharge whenever convenient. Do not wait for 0%. Apple explains that a charge cycle is the total of 100% of the battery’s capacity discharged over time, not necessarily one uninterrupted drain from full to empty.
- Leave optimized charging enabled. Apple’s Optimised Battery Charging and Google Pixel’s Adaptive Charging reduce the time the battery spends fully charged. The phone completes charging closer to your expected unplug time.
- Use an 80% limit when your model provides one. If the phone normally ends the day with plenty of charge, an 80% cap can prioritize long-term battery health over maximum daily runtime. Availability depends on model and software version.
- Use a compatible adapter and cable. Match the charging equipment to the exact phone model and region. Avoid damaged cables, loose connectors, and unverified accessories.
- Reduce demanding use during charging. Gaming, navigation in direct sun, video recording, and hotspot use can create heat on top of charging heat. Let the phone charge without intensive workloads when possible.
Temperature control: the highest-value habit
Know the practical limits

The limits refer to the phone’s environment, not just the weather report. A device in direct sun, inside a parked car, or under a pillow can become much hotter than the surrounding air. A phone may also heat itself through a processor-intensive task while charging.
What to do when the phone feels hot
- Stop gaming, video recording, navigation, or hotspot use temporarily.
- Unplug the charger if the device is uncomfortably hot.
- Move the phone to a shaded, ventilated, dry place.
- Remove a heat-trapping case while charging.
- Let it cool naturally; do not use a freezer, ice pack, or other sudden-cooling method that could cause condensation.
Wireless and fast charging can produce more heat than slower charging in some situations. Samsung specifically advises unplugging and waiting if a Galaxy becomes hot during wireless or fast charging.

Charging percentages, cycles, and the 80% question
Do you need to wait until 0%?
No. Apple states that you can recharge a lithium-ion battery whenever you want and do not need to discharge it completely first. A cycle accumulates as partial discharges add up to 100%: using 25% one day and 75% later represents one combined cycle, not two complete cycles.
Frequent top-ups are therefore acceptable. The practical goal is to avoid repeatedly forcing the phone through full discharge and emergency shutdowns, not to hit a particular percentage before every charge.
Should you charge only to 80%?
An 80% limit can reduce the time spent at the highest state of charge, which is useful when a phone routinely has substantial charge left at bedtime. Google Pixel offers an 80% limit and describes it as a battery-health measure. Other phones may provide a similar control, while availability and behavior vary by model and software version.

The trade-off is straightforward: an 80% cap gives less immediate runtime. Use it when the reduced capacity still covers your day; disable it temporarily before travel, long navigation sessions, or another day when maximum runtime matters.

Use the phone’s built-in charging controls
Optimised Battery Charging on iPhone
Apple’s Optimised Battery Charging reduces the time an iPhone remains at 100%. The phone may pause near the final part of charging and finish closer to the time it expects you to unplug. Apple also says an iPhone stops charging when full and can resume below about 95%, so an overnight connection does not mean the battery is continuously forced above 100%.
Adaptive Charging and the 80% limit on Pixel
Google Pixel’s Adaptive Charging learns your charging habits and aims to complete charging near your usual unplug time. Google says the learning period is about 14 days. Pixel also offers an 80% limit on supported software and models. Look in the phone’s Battery or Charging settings; labels and availability can change with updates.
Galaxy battery-protection features
Galaxy models include battery-protection controls whose names and options vary by model and software. Samsung’s guidance emphasizes temperature management, compatible accessories, and avoiding extended use or storage in extreme temperatures. Open the phone’s Battery settings and select the available protection mode rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same limit.

How to verify a setting is working
- Open Settings and search for battery, charging, or battery protection.
- Turn on the optimized, adaptive, or protection feature offered for your model.
- If an 80% limit is available, check whether it is a fixed cap or a schedule-based option.
- After enabling it, observe one or two charging sessions. A pause below full charge or a completion near your normal unplug time indicates that the feature is active.
Overnight charging and fast charging
Is leaving the phone plugged in overnight harmful?
Modern phones manage an overnight connection. Apple says an iPhone stops charging when full and resumes when the level drops below about 95%; Optimised Battery Charging can delay the final charge so the phone spends less time at 100%. Overnight charging is therefore generally compatible with normal use, provided the phone is in a cool, ventilated place and uses suitable accessories.

Do not charge under bedding, inside a sealed bag, or in a hot vehicle. The risk in those situations is accumulated heat, not a single overnight session.
Does fast charging ruin the battery?
Fast charging is a convenience, not an automatic cause of failure. It can create additional heat, so avoid combining it with demanding tasks or a hot environment. Apple explains that charging transitions from fast charging to slower trickle charging around 80% to manage stress and heat. If the phone becomes hot, stop intensive use, unplug it if necessary, and let it cool.
Use the charging speed your phone and adapter are designed to support. A high-wattage adapter does not make an incompatible phone charge safely or faster, and an unsuitable accessory can damage hardware.

Cable and adapter requirements
Google specifies a compatible USB-C cable and power adapter for Pixel charging. Samsung recommends a genuine, compatible adapter for Galaxy phones and warns that an incompatible adapter may damage the charging port. Match the connector, charging standard, power rating, and regional requirements to the exact model.

- Replace frayed, crushed, hot, or intermittently connected cables.
- Keep liquid and debris out of the charging port; never force a connector.
- Use a reputable adapter with the phone’s required safety standards.
- If charging repeatedly stops, becomes unusually hot, or requires wiggling the cable, stop using that accessory and arrange an inspection.
How to store a phone for several months
Long-term storage is different from leaving a phone overnight. A powered-down phone should be stored partly charged in a cool, dry place so it is not left at either extreme.
- Back up anything you need and shut the phone down completely.
- Charge it to approximately half capacity. Samsung specifies about 50–70%; Apple’s long-term guidance also recommends around 50% rather than full or empty.
- Remove it from direct sunlight, hot cars, damp rooms, and other temperature extremes.
- For storage lasting more than a few months, check it periodically. Samsung recommends topping up every 3–6 months.
- Before returning it to regular use, inspect the phone and cable for swelling, damage, or corrosion. Do not charge a visibly swollen battery.
Do not put a fully charged phone away for months, and do not store it completely empty. Either extreme can leave less usable capacity when you need the device again.

Menu names, charge limits, and thermal safeguards can change with software updates and regional or model differences. If a setting described here is absent, use the controls shown in the phone’s current Battery or Charging menu.
When a battery problem needs service
Charging habits cannot restore a battery that has already lost substantial chemical capacity. Arrange a battery check or replacement when the phone frequently shuts down, cannot meet normal usage needs, loses charge unusually quickly after ordinary use, or becomes swollen.

- Frequent shutdowns: A worn battery may no longer supply the peak power the phone requests.
- Severe runtime loss: If ordinary settings and a cool environment do not help, ageing—not a charging mistake—may be the cause.
- Physical swelling or damage: Stop charging and seek professional service promptly.
- Port or accessory faults: Intermittent charging, heat at the connector, or visible damage calls for inspection of the cable, adapter, and port.
There is no universal smartphone cycle-count number that applies to every model. Apple notes that retention varies by product, so a cycle figure from one phone should not be treated as a lifespan guarantee for another.
Common situations and the right response
The phone is hot while charging
Stop intensive apps, remove a heat-trapping case, move the device to a cool ventilated location, and unplug it if it remains hot. Resume charging only after it has cooled naturally.
The battery gets cold and runtime falls
Cold can temporarily reduce available runtime. Keep the phone at a moderate temperature and allow it to warm naturally; do not apply direct high heat.

Temporarily charge to full if your phone’s 80% limit is enabled. Keep the device cool and unplug it when practical rather than leaving it in a hot environment at 100%.
The phone is normally still at 40–60% at bedtime
Enable the available 80% limit or optimized charging feature. The lower maximum may reduce unnecessary time at the highest state of charge without affecting your usual routine.
You are storing the phone for a season
Power it down at roughly 50–70%, keep it cool and dry, and schedule a check and top-up every 3–6 months for Samsung devices. Apple’s guidance similarly favors about 50% and periodic charging for storage beyond six months.
