Start with your phone’s adaptive 5G option—such as 5G Auto on iPhone—or switch to LTE in places where 5G speed is not useful. If the battery still drains quickly, check which apps and screen activity are using power before restricting everything. Battery Saver can buy more time, but may delay updates or notifications. The exact controls and their effects depend on your phone, software, carrier and location.
Does turning off 5G save battery?
It can, but there is no reliable universal figure for how much longer a charge will last. Apple says 5G On might reduce iPhone battery life, while Motorola says 5G uses more battery than 4G on its Edge 2025 models. Neither gives a percentage or number of hours that applies across phones and networks.
Network setup is one possible reason for the difference. Some non-standalone 5G networks use LTE and 5G together, which Samsung says may use more power and make a Galaxy phone warmer. Deployments vary, so this is a possible contributor—not an explanation for every fast-draining phone. Screen brightness, background apps, hotspot use, navigation, streaming and gaming can also matter.

Think of this as a practical comparison, not a lab test. A phone can use different networks as you move between areas, and coverage and carrier behavior affect what it connects to. If you compare two settings, try them during similar routines and in the same places. Do not expect an exact result that transfers to another phone or network.
Choose a 5G setting that fits your use
iPhone: start with 5G Auto
On iPhone 12 or later with a compatible carrier service, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. If the options are available, choose:
- 5G Auto: Uses Apple’s Smart Data mode to switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Apple describes this mode as saving battery life.
- 5G On: Uses 5G whenever it is available. Apple says this might reduce battery life.
- LTE: Uses LTE only, so the phone will not connect to 5G.
Try 5G Auto first if you want to keep 5G available when it offers a noticeable benefit. If battery drain remains a concern, compare LTE-only use during your normal day. Available choices depend on device, carrier, plan and market. See Apple’s 5G settings and availability guidance.
These options are not identical in what they prioritize. 5G On favors using 5G whenever available, while Auto is designed to fall back to LTE when the faster network is not noticeably improving the experience. LTE is the more direct test if you want to see whether 5G connectivity is contributing to drain in your usual locations. If you rely on 5G for a specific task, you can return to an option that keeps it available afterward.
Pixel: look for Adaptive connectivity
Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, have an Adaptive connectivity option. Google says some US carriers may limit its availability. Settings and behavior can also depend on the software and carrier, so check Google’s Pixel battery-life guidance for your model.
On a 5G-capable Pixel, Battery Saver may cause the phone to use 4G rather than 5G, depending on carrier network behavior. That makes Battery Saver useful when runtime matters more than keeping 5G active, but it is not the same as a universal, permanently available LTE switch.
Adaptive connectivity is a device-specific option, not a setting to expect on every Android phone. If you do not see it, check your manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming your phone is missing a standard Android control. The carrier can also affect whether a feature is offered or how the phone behaves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther Android phones: check the maker’s instructions
There is no single Android path or adaptive-5G control that applies to every phone. Look in your cellular or mobile-network settings, or consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. Motorola’s Edge 2025 guide describes a Turn off 5G control for supported software and says 5G uses more battery than 4G. Do not assume that exact toggle or behavior exists on other Motorola models or Android phones. Samsung notes that some non-standalone 5G networks use LTE and 5G circuits together; its explanation is specific to those deployments, not every 5G connection. See Motorola’s Edge 2025 user guide and Samsung’s battery-drain guidance.

If you are unsure which option to pick, favor the least disruptive setting that addresses your situation. Adaptive 5G is a sensible starting point if you want the phone to use 5G when it is useful. LTE-only is a more restrictive comparison: it may reduce cellular power use in some circumstances, but you give up 5G while it is selected. Whether that is a worthwhile exchange depends on the service available where you spend time and whether you notice a speed difference.
Find what is actually using the battery
Before turning off several features at once, inspect recent battery use. On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery and review usage by app; Google recommends keeping app optimization enabled. Samsung’s Battery and device care includes Background usage limits, where you can put rarely used apps to sleep or restrict selected apps. Labels and locations can differ by model and software.
If one app stands out, check whether it needs to run in the background. Restricting background use can delay that app’s refreshes or other functions, so avoid applying the restriction indiscriminately to services where timely updates matter. Google’s Pixel battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy background-use instructions describe their respective controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the report to decide what to test, rather than treating every app or feature as equally likely to be responsible. A high-use app may reflect something you actively did, such as watching video or navigating, rather than an unwanted background problem. If a rarely used app is consuming power in the background, consider restricting that app specifically. Then observe whether the change helps before making more restrictions.
Keep app optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it. Broadly disabling or restricting background behavior can create a different problem: delayed refreshes, or an app that does not perform its expected background task. The goal is to reduce unnecessary use while preserving the functions you depend on, not to silence everything.
Reduce screen and activity-related drain selectively
Adjust the display
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
- Turn off an always-on display or live wallpaper if you do not need it.
- On supported Pixel models, Google also suggests turning off Smooth Display. Samsung provides display and timeout adjustments on Galaxy phones.
- Dark theme may help on some OLED or AMOLED screens, but savings depend on the display and how you use the phone; it is not a guaranteed improvement on every handset.
These adjustments are useful if screen-on use is a major part of the drain. Changing them is not a substitute for checking app usage when the battery report points elsewhere. Google lists these options in its Pixel battery guidance; Samsung covers display settings in its Galaxy battery-optimisation guidance.
Choose changes that do not make the phone inconvenient to use. For example, lowering brightness is easy to reverse when you need a brighter screen, and a shorter timeout reduces the period the display stays on after you stop interacting. If you use an always-on display to check information at a glance, decide whether turning it off is worth losing that convenience. These are targeted adjustments, not requirements to disable every display feature.
Turn off or pause only activities you are not using
Switch off hotspot or tethering when nothing needs the connection. When you need to stretch a low charge, consider postponing prolonged GPS navigation, video streaming, camera use, high-intensity games or calls while moving. Google lists these among activities that can use battery. There is no need to disable every connection if you still need it; target the activity that is consuming power or that you can safely pause. See Google’s Android battery-saving guidance.

(Note: For iPhone 14 series and earlier, please use your own Lightning cable and connect it via the USB-A or USB-C port.)
- 30W Bi-Directional Charging: Enjoy two-way fast charging, a feature found in many Anker power banks, with up to 30W output and 20W input. (Note: Compatible with iPhone 15 Series, MacBook, Galaxy, iPad, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and more.)
- What You Get: Anker Zolo Power Bank (10K, 30W), 5.4-inch (13.7 cm) built-in USB-C cable, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Hotspot use is a particularly clear example of a feature to switch off when finished: leaving a connection available when no other device needs it serves no purpose for that moment. But if you need navigation, a call or a camera, turning it off solely to save battery may defeat the purpose of carrying the phone. Prioritize the tasks you need, and reduce optional or prolonged use when the remaining charge is tight.
Connectivity choices should also be specific. Turning off all connections may interfere with the service you want, while choosing LTE rather than 5G is a narrower change. Keep the connection you need for calls, messages or data, and pause only features that are not currently serving you.
Use Battery Saver when the trade-off is worthwhile
Turn on your phone’s built-in Battery Saver or Low Power mode when you need more time before charging. Android’s general guidance says Battery Saver can limit background activity, visual effects, network connections and apps, so some features or updates may be delayed. The exact changes vary by device.
Pixel’s standard Battery Saver may switch a 5G-capable phone to 4G, depending on carrier behavior. Extreme Battery Saver is more restrictive: it pauses most apps, and paused apps do not send notifications. Samsung offers configurable Power saving restrictions. Before using a stronger mode, consider which calls, messages and app alerts must still arrive. For device-specific behavior, see Google’s Pixel Battery Saver instructions and Samsung’s Galaxy battery-optimisation guidance.
Battery Saver is best treated as a temporary runtime tool, not a free improvement with no side effects. It can be a good choice before a long stretch away from a charger, but if you need a particular app to refresh or notify you promptly, check how that app behaves under the mode you use. Extreme modes can be especially disruptive because pausing most apps means losing their notifications until they are no longer paused.
If you want to preserve normal app behavior, start with a less restrictive measure—such as adaptive 5G, a lower screen brightness or restricting one unnecessary background app. Use a broader saver mode when the extra time matters more than background convenience. The available controls and restrictions differ across Android manufacturers, so a phone’s own Battery Saver description is more reliable than assuming every device changes the same functions.
Keep the phone cool and check battery condition
A hot phone can lose charge faster even when you are not actively using it. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or another hot place; if it overheats, let it cool. Google notes that heat accelerates battery drain, and Samsung also advises allowing an overheated device to cool. See Google’s Pixel battery guidance and Samsung’s advice on battery drain and heat.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Heat and 5G should not be confused as a single diagnosis. Samsung describes warmth as something that may occur with some non-standalone network configurations, but a warm phone can have other causes too. Regardless of the cause, avoid direct sun and give an overheated device time to cool rather than expecting a network setting to solve every heat-related drain problem.

If the phone repeatedly runs down unusually quickly, compare its battery-usage report with its battery-health information, if available. Battery life means how long the phone runs before needing a recharge; battery lifespan is how long the battery remains usable before replacement. Apple explains that chemical aging reduces the capacity a battery can hold. Settings may reduce current power use, but cannot restore capacity lost to aging. If battery health is degraded, consider service through the manufacturer or an authorized provider. See Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance.
This distinction matters when evaluating results. A phone with less remaining capacity may still benefit from reduced screen or network use, but settings cannot bring back the charge capacity it had when new. If battery health is poor, increasingly restrictive settings may make the phone less convenient without addressing the underlying loss of capacity. Battery service is the relevant next step to consider for degraded health.
Battery care is not the same as making one charge last longer
Samsung Ireland’s guidance, last updated 27 November 2025, suggests a 20–80% charge range as optional battery-care advice and describes Battery protection. A lower charging cap may help with battery care, but it also means less charge available for the day; it does not make today’s charge last longer. Feature names and limits vary by Galaxy model. Refer to Samsung’s regional battery-optimisation instructions for the controls supported by your phone.
In other words, a charge limit concerns battery care over time, while the settings in this guide aim to stretch the charge currently in the phone. If you have a full day ahead and want the maximum immediate runtime, a lower cap works against that short-term goal. Treat it as an optional choice about battery care, not as a quick fix for 5G drain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option should you try first?
| Option | Potential runtime effect | What you give up or need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive 5G or 5G Auto | Can use LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience; Apple says 5G Auto saves battery. | Availability and behavior depend on phone, carrier and market. See Apple’s 5G guidance. |
| LTE-only | May reduce cellular power use in some situations; no universal saving is established. | No 5G connection while selected. Actual speed and coverage depend on your carrier and location. |
| Battery Saver | Can limit background activity and, on Pixel under some carrier conditions, use 4G instead of 5G. | Updates, visual effects, network behavior or app functions may be limited; Extreme Battery Saver pauses most Pixel apps and their notifications. See Pixel Battery Saver guidance and Android guidance. |
| App or background restrictions | Can target apps that use power in the background. | Background refreshes or other activity may be delayed. Check the app-level report before restricting it. See Pixel guidance and Samsung guidance. |
| Battery service | Addresses reduced capacity from battery aging rather than changing network use. | Appropriate when battery health is degraded; settings cannot restore chemically lost capacity. See Apple’s battery-health explanation. |
A practical order is to start with the least disruptive changes: choose adaptive 5G if available, check battery use, and adjust the specific app, screen setting or activity that stands out. Compare LTE if you still suspect 5G is contributing, then turn on Battery Saver when you need a broader temporary reduction. If the report and usage changes do not explain a persistent problem, consider heat and battery condition rather than adding restrictions at random.
There are no comparable official measurements here that establish a particular percentage or number of hours gained by switching from 5G to LTE across phones and networks. To learn what helps in your own routine, change one setting at a time and compare battery use in similar places and for similar activities; coverage and network conditions can affect the result.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use 5G Auto or LTE?
Start with 5G Auto or your phone’s adaptive connectivity option if you want to keep 5G available when it provides a noticeable benefit. On iPhone, Apple says 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience and saves battery. Why does my phone battery drain so fast on 5G?
5G may be one contributor, but it is not the only possible cause. Some non-standalone 5G networks use LTE and 5G together; Samsung says this may use more power and make a Galaxy phone warmer. Screen use, background apps, hotspot use, navigation, streaming, gaming, heat and battery age can also matter. Check the battery-usage report and test one targeted change at a time instead of assuming the network is solely responsible.

Does turning off 5G always make a phone last longer?
No universal amount of extra runtime is established, and the effect depends on the phone, network, location and use. Apple says 5G On might reduce battery life, and Motorola says 5G uses more battery than 4G on its Edge 2025 models, but neither statement provides a universal percentage or number of hours. Compare settings during similar use if you want to assess your own phone.
Will Battery Saver turn off 5G?
It depends on the phone and carrier. Google says a 5G-capable Pixel may use 4G while Battery Saver is on, depending on carrier network behavior. Do not assume the same behavior on every Android device. Battery Saver can also limit background activity and other functions, while Pixel Extreme Battery Saver pauses most apps and their notifications.
Should I turn off background activity for every app?
No. First inspect recent battery use and focus on apps that are using power in the background without a function you need. Restricting background activity can delay refreshes or other tasks, and some apps may need to run to provide timely updates. Targeted changes preserve more of the phone’s normal behavior.

Can a power bank fix 5G battery drain?
A compatible USB-C power bank can provide a recharge away from an outlet, but it does not reduce 5G drain, restore battery health or make one existing charge last longer. Check that the power bank’s connector and charging support match your phone. If battery health is degraded, settings or accessories do not restore the lost capacity.
