You can often keep an existing laptop useful longer by managing heat and battery charging, reducing unnecessary power use, checking battery health, preserving storage space, and protecting your files. Start with built-in settings and diagnostics; consider repair only after identifying the actual bottleneck. The right hardware fix depends on the laptop’s exact model.
Start by separating battery runtime from laptop lifespan
Battery runtime is how long the laptop runs between charges. Battery longevity is how much capacity the battery retains over time. Overall service life also depends on the display, storage, memory, cooling, software support, and whether the machine still meets your needs. A power-saving setting can stretch a charge, but it cannot restore capacity lost through battery wear or fix a failing component.
Before changing settings or arranging repair, make a current backup of important files. That protects your data if troubleshooting leads to cleanup, service, or a replacement device.

Reduce battery wear with heat and charging habits
Heat and frequent deep discharges can speed the decline of a lithium-ion battery. Microsoft Support recommends avoiding frequent full discharges and, when practical, keeping routine charge between about 20% and 80%. These are care recommendations, not a promise of a particular battery lifespan. Avoid leaving a laptop in hot environments, and use built-in battery management instead of repeatedly checking and unplugging it by hand.

For a laptop that will be stored unused, Microsoft recommends a charge of roughly 40%–60%, a cool, dry location, and periodic checks so the battery does not deeply discharge. See Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.
Use charge management when your model offers it
On supported Windows devices, Smart charging can limit charging while the laptop remains plugged in. On Mac laptops, battery health management and Charge Limit options vary by model and settings. Check your device’s own battery settings rather than assuming a feature exists: Apple’s Mac battery settings guide and its guidance on battery health management on Apple-silicon Mac laptops describe available controls.
Treat a swollen battery as a safety issue
If the battery is visibly swollen or pushing beyond the laptop’s enclosure, stop using the device. Do not press, puncture, or attempt to flatten it; arrange appropriate service. Microsoft’s instruction is: “If your battery expands beyond the device’s mechanical enclosure, stop using the device immediately.”

Stretch the time between charges
When you need more runtime, reduce power demand rather than expecting settings to repair a worn battery. In Windows, turn on Energy Saver or Battery Saver, lower screen brightness, and shorten the time before the screen turns off. Where your model exposes them, a lower refresh rate or less power-intensive graphics setting can also help. Windows saving modes reduce some background activity, so notifications or syncing may be less immediate.
Microsoft lists these options in its Windows battery-saving tips. Their benefit is more time per charge; they do not restore battery capacity or address unrelated performance problems.
Check battery condition before paying for service
Windows 11: generate a battery report
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the HTML report at the file location shown in the command output, then review its battery usage and capacity information.
Use the report as an indication of battery condition, not as a standalone verdict about the entire laptop. Microsoft explains battery reporting in its battery-care guidance.

Mac: review Battery settings
Open the Mac’s Battery settings and review battery condition and maximum capacity where shown. Options vary with the Mac model and macOS version; Apple documents the settings in its Battery settings guide. If the battery is worn, service may restore useful unplugged runtime, but it will not resolve a separate storage, performance, or software-support problem.

Low free space can interfere with updates and everyday work. Remove apps and files you no longer need, or move large files to another drive. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes these approaches when there is not enough space for an update.
Back up files before substantial cleanup or repair. A compatible external USB drive can hold a separate copy; choose a connection and capacity that suit the laptop and the backup routine. Mac users can connect external storage for automatic Time Machine backups; Apple’s Mac laptop support page links to backup and service help. A backup reduces data-loss risk, but it does not make the laptop faster or extend its hardware life.

Use symptoms to decide whether to troubleshoot or seek service
One symptom alone does not mean a laptop must be replaced. Look for persistent or worsening problems and identify which part of the experience is failing: battery runtime, speed, storage, reliability, or software support. Microsoft’s guide to assessing whether it is time for a new PC identifies signs such as frequent fan noise, declining battery life, recurring errors, slow tasks, low storage, high sustained CPU, memory, or disk use, and inability to receive current updates.
- Battery drains quickly: Check battery condition, then decide whether runtime settings or model-compatible battery service address the problem.
- Fan noise or slowdowns persist: Check system activity and whether a particular app or resource is consistently busy. If the symptom continues, seek model-appropriate diagnosis rather than assuming a memory or storage upgrade is possible.
- Errors recur or storage is nearly full: Back up important files, free space cautiously, and check whether errors continue.
- Updates are no longer available: Treat this as a software-support and security concern, not a problem solved by replacing the battery. The options depend on the laptop and its operating-system support.
There is no universal repair-versus-replace price threshold. The decision depends on the model, local service and parts availability, software support, the fault, and what you need the laptop to do. Apple owners can use its Mac laptop support page to find battery checks and service options. For any laptop, confirm the exact model and repair method before buying internal parts; upgradeability and safe battery replacement are model-specific.
