To make a Samsung Galaxy more comfortable to use after dark, combine the controls that address your specific problem: turn on Dark mode to darken supported menus, Eye comfort shield to warm screen colors, and Extra dim to lower brightness beyond the regular control. For a bedtime routine, Sleep mode can bundle some of these display settings with Do not disturb. Menu names and available features vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Choose the setting that addresses the problem

These settings do different jobs, so you can use more than one. Adjust one at a time to see which change you prefer, and set brightness for the room rather than aiming for a universal percentage.
How do I turn on Dark mode?
- Open Settings > Display > Dark mode and select Dark.
- To set a schedule, open Dark mode settings, then choose sunset-to-sunrise or custom start and end times if your phone offers them.
You can also swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Dark mode Quick Settings tile. Touch and hold the tile to open its settings on supported versions.

Dark mode applies to Samsung’s system interface and supported apps; some third-party apps keep their own appearance. Downloaded themes and some high-contrast fonts can also affect how it looks. Samsung Canada notes that some apps may flicker with Dark/Night mode and recommends keeping the phone and apps current. See Samsung’s Dark mode guidance.

How do I turn on Eye comfort shield?
- Open Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield, or swipe down and tap its Quick Settings tile.
- Choose an available mode, such as Adaptive or a custom schedule, and adjust the color temperature if your phone provides that control.
Eye comfort shield gives the screen a warmer tint; it is a display preference, not a guarantee of reduced eye strain or better sleep. Samsung US says the feature is available on One UI 3.1 and higher devices, while also noting that availability can vary by model. Consult Samsung’s Eye comfort shield instructions if the setting is missing or named differently.
How do I turn on Extra dim?
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and tap Extra dim.
- If you do not see the tile, open Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements to find the feature or follow the phone’s controls for adding its Quick Settings tile.
- Touch and hold the tile to access intensity and shortcut options, if available.
Extra dim reduces brightness beyond the regular brightness control. Samsung cautions that some accessibility features may not be supported on every model. Its support instructions for Extra dim describe the controls and tile setup.

Can Sleep mode combine night settings?
On supported phones, Sleep mode can group choices such as grayscale, Dark mode, Eye comfort shield, Do not disturb, Always On Display, sound settings, and Power saving. The available combination depends on the installed software.

Make text easier to read and troubleshoot unexpected colors
Change the size of on-screen content
Open Settings > Display > Screen zoom and adjust the control to change the size of interface elements. This can help with readability without changing the screen’s color or brightness. Samsung provides this path in its display troubleshooting guidance.
Check settings if the screen looks too dark or tinted
If the display suddenly seems unusually dim, warm, or tinted, check whether Extra dim or Eye comfort shield is on. For a color cast, also inspect Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Color filter. Adaptive color tone may appear on some devices but not others. Samsung lists these possibilities in its guide to unusual screen colors.

Why your Galaxy menus may differ
Samsung’s support paths and feature availability vary by model, software version, and region. The cited Dark mode guidance is from Samsung Canada, and the other instructions are from Samsung US; menus on a device sold or configured elsewhere may differ. If a path does not match, search Settings for the feature name, or use the relevant Quick Settings tile when available.
