To prepare your brand data for Apple’s AI-era search, make important public pages crawlable and accurately described, then handle app actions and content separately with App Intents. Apple says Applebot-crawled data supports search and may provide context for generated answers—but it does not promise that any particular markup, directive, or app integration will earn a citation or improve ranking.
What Apple says Applebot does—and what it does not promise
Apple Support’s “About Applebot,” published September 5, 2026, says data crawled by Applebot supports search experiences integrated into Spotlight, Siri, and Safari. Apple also says that crawled data may provide additional context and up-to-date content when AI models generate output for display in Apple products and services. Its examples include world-knowledge answers in Siri and Search that may link to source websites.
That is a reason to make useful public information accessible and clear, not evidence of a dedicated Apple answer engine or a guaranteed route into every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple does not say that using a particular Schema.org type, adding an App Intent, or changing a robots directive guarantees answer inclusion, a citation, or a higher position.

Apple says these factors have no predetermined relative importance. It also says Applebot-Extended rules are not considered in Search ranking. Structured data should describe real page content; it is not a ranking guarantee.

Choose the implementation route that fits your goal
| Route | Where the information lives | What it can support | Key limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawlable pages, metadata, and public structured data | Public website | Applebot crawling and search; Apple’s archived guide says structured data can enrich search results, while current guidance allows for possible generated-answer context | No documented guarantee of answer inclusion or rank; the detailed schema list in the archived guide is from 2016 |
| Robots directives and page-level controls | Website robots.txt, HTML, or page response | Controls for crawling, indexing, snippets and generated-answer context, training use, and paywall identification | These controls have different effects; opting out of training is not the same as removing a page from search |
| App Intents, app entities, and Spotlight indexing | Native app | Making app actions and app-owned content more understandable to system experiences such as Siri and Spotlight | Requires app-side work and does not replace public website markup |
For a public brand site, start with the first two routes. If the goal also includes helping someone find app content or complete an action, assess the third route independently.
Make important website content available to Applebot
Check crawler access and rendering
Applebot respects standard robots.txt directives. If your robots.txt file does not name Applebot but does include rules for Googlebot, Apple says Applebot follows those Googlebot instructions. Applebot does not follow crawl-delay. It may adjust its crawling to reduce impact when a site slows down or returns errors, and it caches crawled content.
Applebot may render pages in a browser. If robots.txt or other access rules block JavaScript, CSS, or resources needed to render a page, the crawler may not see it as intended. Check that essential product, service, and brand details are present in crawlable page content, or that the page remains understandable when those resources are unavailable.

If you need to distinguish Applebot traffic in server logs, Apple documents reverse-DNS verification under *.applebot.apple.com and provides a published CIDR list for IP matching. Do not rely on a user-agent string alone when identifying crawler requests.
Keep page descriptions aligned with visible facts
Use accurate page titles and descriptions, working destinations, and structured data that matches what a visitor can actually see. Mark up genuine products, organizations, or other page entities only when the values are accurate and present on the page. Do not add ratings, prices, or claims just to populate a field.
Apple’s archived App Search Programming Guide, last updated December 15, 2016, recommends making a site discoverable and indexable, adding relevant deep links into an app, and enriching search results with Schema.org and Open Graph markup. It lists AggregateRating, Offers, PriceRange, InteractionCount, Organization, Recipe, SearchAction, and ImageObject as supported types for the described context. Treat that list as historical advice, not a verified current compatibility matrix: Apple’s current Applebot page does not publish a comprehensive list of Schema.org types for every Apple surface.

The archived guide also says title, description, and a deep link were required to index an item in its described App Search context, and recommends a content-specific image. It points to an App Search API validation tool; check whether Apple currently offers that tool before relying on it. More generally, inspect what Applebot can extract using currently available Apple tooling, then compare the extracted page information with the live page.

Use Apple’s controls according to the outcome you want
Indexing, snippets and generated-answer context, and model training are separate decisions. Apple’s documented controls are not interchangeable, so choose them for the specific page and consequence you intend.
| Control | Effect Apple documents | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
noindex |
Applebot will not index the page; it will not appear in Spotlight or Siri Suggestions | Use when the page should be excluded from those search experiences, not merely when you want to prevent generated-answer context |
nosnippet |
Applebot will not generate a description or web answer for the page, and will not use its data as additional context and up-to-date content for generated output in Apple products and services | This affects snippets and answer context; it is not the documented training opt-out |
nofollow |
Applebot will not follow links on the page | Consider the effect on discovery through the links on that page |
Applebot-Extended disallow rule |
Opts crawled content out of use for training Apple’s general-purpose foundation models; Applebot-Extended does not crawl webpages | Disallowing it does not by itself remove pages from search |
Apple says publishers can use standard robots directives for Applebot. A robots.txt rule for Applebot-Extended is a different control from page-level indexing and snippet directives. For example, a sitewide training opt-out can be expressed as:

Use a broad rule only if that is the intended scope. If the decision varies by content, set controls at the appropriate level and verify that they apply to the intended pages.
Mark paywalled pages accurately
Apple documents the page-level Schema.org property isAccessibleForFree for identifying paywalled, metered, or subscription content. When a page is not freely accessible, Apple says isAccessibleForFree: false leaves it eligible to appear in search, but the page’s content will not be used as additional context for generated output in Apple products and services. Apple says this signal applies at page level; it does not support section-level hasPart markup for this purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApply that value to the actual access conditions of the page. It is not a way to remove a page from search, and it should not be used to describe content that is freely available.

Keep training use separate from search visibility
Apple’s September 9, 2026 dataset disclosure says its training data includes publicly available information crawled by Applebot, licensed or purchased third-party data, open-source data, user-study data, and synthetic data. Apple says Applebot does not crawl login-protected or paywalled websites and respects standard robots.txt directives publishers use to restrict crawling or training use. Apple also describes processing such as quality filtering, text extraction, and deduplication.
In the same disclosure, Apple describes its training data collectively as trillions of individual data points, says text-data collection began in 2018, and says image-data collection began in 2020. These are broad company disclosures, not independent measurements of Applebot pages, brand records, or search performance. They do not establish that every crawled page entered a particular model, and Apple does not say Schema.org markup affects training selection.
For apps, implement App Intents as a separate layer
App Intents and website structured data solve different problems. Public Schema.org markup describes information on a website; it does not expose private app content or make an app action available to Siri. App Intents let developers describe app actions and content through structured types, including app entities and enums. Apple’s developer documentation says developers can index entities for Spotlight, use transferable types, associate visible views with entities, and donate actions or content.
Apple’s “Apple Intelligence and Siri AI” documentation says schemas act as a contract between the system and an app. Its schema documentation includes the .system domain for in-app search and content access, which Apple describes as broadly applicable to apps that search or open content. This work requires an app implementation; adding web markup alone does not do it.
Apple’s developer documentation gives “Find bicycle.” and “Search for mountains.” as example utterances for app search intents. These illustrate natural-language phrasing, not measured search frequency or evidence that users commonly make those queries.
Quick Recap
A practical audit for a brand site and app
- Inspect crawler rules. Review robots.txt and page response directives for Applebot-specific and general crawler instructions. Check whether a Googlebot rule is also shaping Applebot behavior.
- Test rendered content. Confirm that important information remains available if scripts, stylesheets, or other resources cannot be loaded.
- Align page signals. Compare each page’s title, description, canonical destination, visible facts, and structured data. Correct inconsistencies rather than adding unsupported fields.
- Choose controls per page. Decide independently whether the page should be indexed, used for snippets or answer context, or excluded from training.
- Describe access honestly. For applicable paywalled or metered pages, use page-level
isAccessibleForFree: falseand reflect actual access conditions. - Assess app integration separately. If users should find app-owned content or perform app actions through system experiences, evaluate App Intents and Spotlight entity indexing.
- Validate and measure. Use Apple tooling that is currently available to inspect crawler extraction. Review server logs and available analytics for changes, but do not attribute every visit or answer to a single markup change.
