If wireless earbuds keep slipping, start with the fit you already have: insert each earbud gently, rotate or angle it as the manufacturer shows, and test tip sizes separately in your left and right ears. A supported fit-test in the companion app can confirm whether the seal is suitable. Only after those steps should you consider a model-specific wingtip or stability band.

There is no universally best ear-tip material, size, or earbud shape. Comfort and stability depend on your ear anatomy, the exact model, the seal, movement, moisture, and whether an accessory is designed for that earbud. Use the sequence below to find a secure fit without forcing anything painful.

Start with a gentle insertion and a small adjustment

The quickest improvement is often positioning, not a new accessory. Earbuds should sit securely without being wedged deep into the canal or pressed hard against the outer ear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact model. Open the charging case, check the label or your phone’s Bluetooth settings, and find the manufacturer’s wearing instructions for that model. Stem direction, nozzle angle, and wing placement vary.
  2. Clean and dry your ears and earbuds. Moisture, skin oil, sunscreen, shampoo residue, and debris can reduce friction and irritate skin. Do not push a cotton swab into the ear canal.
  3. Insert the earbud gently. Apple’s AirPods Pro guidance says, “Gently insert the ear tip into your ear canal opening.” Follow the equivalent instruction for your model rather than copying another design.
  4. Rotate or angle it as directed. AirPods Pro instructions, for example, direct users to rotate the stem toward the face and adjust rotation or angle. A different model may require a different motion, so use its manual.
  5. Check stability with relaxed movement. Turn your head, speak, smile, and walk normally. If the earbud shifts immediately, adjust its position before changing parts.

Never twist aggressively or force the tip past the comfortable opening of the ear canal. A secure fit should feel supported, not pressurized.

Apple’s AirPods Pro fit guidance illustrates the insertion and rotation approach for that specific product family.

Choose tip sizes for each ear, not as a matching pair

Your left and right ear canals are often different shapes. Treat each side as its own fitting problem. If your earbuds include small, medium, and large tips, test them independently rather than assuming both ears need the same size.

Signs a tip is too small

  • The earbud feels loose or falls out when you walk, talk, or chew.
  • Outside sound leaks in and music sounds thin, especially in the bass.
  • You need to push the earbud inward repeatedly to keep a seal.

Apple notes that a loose feel or falling out can indicate that an AirPods Pro tip is too small. On that model, try the next size up, then reposition it gently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs a tip is too large

  • You feel compression, pressure, or soreness soon after insertion.
  • The ear canal opening feels stretched or tender.
  • The earbud slowly works outward because the material is pushing against the canal.

Apple’s AirPods Pro guidance identifies compression or discomfort as signs that a tip may be too large. A smaller tip can relieve pressure, but it must still form a stable seal.

A practical size test

  1. Start with the manufacturer’s preinstalled size.
  2. Try one alternate size on the left ear while leaving the right ear unchanged.
  3. Walk, turn your head, and speak for 10 to 15 minutes. Apple recommends judging AirPods Pro fit during ordinary activity rather than immediately after insertion.
  4. Repeat the test on the other ear. Record which size feels secure and comfortable on each side.
  5. Use the combination that works for each ear, even if the sizes do not match.

Do not judge only by a tight sensation. A tip that feels very tight for two minutes may become painful later, while a slightly looser tip may remain stable once the earbud is rotated into its intended position.

Run the manufacturer’s fit test when your model supports one

Some earbuds use microphones and software to check whether the ear tip is sealing properly. These tests are useful confirmation, but they are not universal and they do not replace your comfort judgment.

AirPods Pro ear-tip fit test

Supported AirPods Pro models provide an acoustic seal or ear-tip fit test. With the earbuds connected, open the relevant AirPods controls on your paired Apple device and choose the ear-tip fit test. Keep still and quiet while the test plays its tones. If it reports a poor seal, first remove and reinsert the earbud, then adjust its angle. If the result remains poor, try a different size on that ear and repeat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s current fit instructions are documented at its AirPods Pro ear-tip fit page. Menus can differ by operating-system version and AirPods model, so use the labels shown on your device.

Galaxy Buds fit test

Supported Galaxy Buds models can run a fit test in the Galaxy Wearable app. Connect both earbuds, open the earbuds’ controls, and select the fit-test option if it appears. Follow the on-screen instruction to keep the earbuds in place during the measurement. Reposition first when the result is poor; change tip size only if a careful repositioning does not improve the seal.

Samsung describes this process in its Galaxy Buds fit-test support article. The option is model- and app-dependent, so its absence does not mean your earbuds are defective.

How to interpret a test result

  • Good seal, comfortable fit: Keep the current size and position, then verify stability during your normal activity.
  • Good seal, painful fit: Reduce pressure by trying a smaller tip or a less deep position. A pass does not override pain.
  • Poor seal, comfortable fit: Reinsert and rotate as directed, then test the next size. Check that the tip is fully attached.
  • Inconsistent results: Run the test in a quiet room with clean, dry tips and both earbuds seated at the same time.

Understand what makes an earbud stay put

Stability comes from several factors working together. Comparing only “small,” “medium,” or “large” tips misses the way the earbud interacts with your ear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Fit factor What to check Typical adjustment
Tip size and pressure Does the tip seal without painful compression? Try a different size on that ear and reassess after normal movement.
Acoustic seal Does outside sound leak in, or does the earbud feel blocked? Reinsert, rotate, and test another tip size.
Earbud orientation Is the body or stem pointing in the direction shown by the maker? Follow the model’s specified rotation or angle.
Outer-ear support Does the design use a wingtip or stability band? Install only the accessory made for the exact model.
Software fit test Does the companion app report a suitable seal? Use the result as a guide, then prioritize pain-free comfort.
Accessory compatibility Will the part fit the nozzle, sensors, case, and charging contacts? Verify dimensions and case clearance in manufacturer documentation.

Ear-tip material can change friction and feel, but the available guidance does not establish one material as best for everyone. Choose based on the fit and comfort you experience with your model.

Use wings or stability bands only when they match your model

Outer-ear supports can stop rotation and reduce the load on the ear-tip, but they are model-specific parts, not universal add-ons.

Wingtips on applicable Galaxy Buds

Some Galaxy Buds use a wingtip that faces upward into the outer ear. Samsung’s instructions show the wingtip helping the earbud lock into the ear’s contours. Install the correct left and right wingtip, orient it as shown, and avoid stretching it over a housing it was not designed to fit. A wingtip that sits in the wrong direction can create pressure rather than stability.

See Samsung’s illustrated wearing guidance at this Galaxy Buds support page. The instructions apply to applicable models only.

Stability bands on QuietComfort Earbuds II

Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds II Fit Kit is a concrete example of a model-specific system. The kit contains three sizes of silicone eartips and three sizes of stability bands. The bands hug the outer ear, and the manufacturer says the pieces can be mixed and matched. This does not make the kit compatible with other earbuds.

Check the exact model name before purchasing an accessory and confirm that the band does not block microphones, touch controls, vents, or the charging contacts. The product listing is at Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds II Fit Kit page.

Before trying a third-party accessory

  • Confirm the accessory lists your exact generation and left/right orientation.
  • Check that the earbuds still sit fully in the charging case; a band that prevents contact can leave them uncharged.
  • Verify that microphones, proximity sensors, vents, and touch areas remain unobstructed.
  • Look for the manufacturer’s installation and removal instructions.
  • Stop if the accessory creates pressure, redness, or a change in hearing.

Universal silicone covers are not proven to fit every earbud or case. Treat compatibility as a specification to verify, not an assumption.

A complete troubleshooting sequence for slipping earbuds

Work through these steps in order so you change one variable at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the model and orientation. Read the manufacturer’s wearing diagram and identify left and right earbuds.
  2. Inspect the ear tips. Make sure each tip is fully seated on its nozzle, undamaged, and free of oil or debris.
  3. Clean and dry. Wipe the outer surfaces with the method approved for your model. Keep liquid away from openings and charging contacts.
  4. Reinsert gently. Place the tip at the canal opening, then rotate or angle the earbud exactly as directed.
  5. Test each ear separately. Use the included sizes, allowing 10 to 15 minutes of ordinary activity for each candidate when practical.
  6. Run the app fit test. If supported, reposition and repeat before changing size again.
  7. Check movement-specific failure. If the fit is stable while seated but slips during running, identify whether sweat, jaw movement, or the outer housing is causing the rotation.
  8. Investigate a model-specific wing or band. Verify case clearance and exact compatibility before installation.
  9. Stop for pain or irritation. Do not continue testing a painful combination.

Match the fix to the symptom

The earbud falls out while walking

Reinsert and rotate it first. If the fit remains loose, try the next larger tip on that ear and perform a walking test. If the tip seals but the housing rotates out of the outer ear, a compatible wingtip or stability band may address the movement better than a larger tip.

It stays in but hurts after a few minutes

Remove it and try a smaller tip or a less compressed position. Do not solve pain by pushing the earbud deeper. Check whether a wing or band is pressing one spot of the outer ear; support should stabilize the earbud without creating a pressure point.

Bass disappears or noise control seems weak

This usually indicates an incomplete acoustic seal, an incorrectly seated tip, or a poor angle. Reinsert, rotate, and test another size. A larger tip is not automatically correct if it causes compression and pushes itself outward.

Only one side slips

Fit that ear independently. Use a different size or orientation on the slipping side, and inspect that tip for stretching or damage. Do not force both sides to use a matching size.

The app says the seal is good, but the earbud still moves

An acoustic seal test measures sealing at a moment in time; it does not guarantee stability during exercise or jaw movement. Recheck orientation and consider whether the outer-ear housing needs a model-specific wing or band.

The earbud will not charge after adding a cover

Remove the cover and verify that the earbud sits completely in its case. A compatible-looking accessory may interfere with the case cavity or charging contacts. Use only parts documented for the exact model and generation.

Keep the fit comfortable over time

Fit can change as tips collect skin oil or lose their shape. Inspect them regularly for tears, flattened edges, or looseness on the nozzle. Replace damaged tips with parts specified for your model. Clean and dry the earbuds after sweaty use according to the manufacturer’s care instructions, and let moisture evaporate before charging.

Apple advises keeping earbuds and skin clean and dry and notes that sweat and residues from products such as sunscreen or shampoo can contribute to irritation. Its cleaning guidance is available at Apple Support. Avoid applying alcohol, solvents, or water unless your model’s instructions explicitly permit them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop using the earbuds

Remove the earbuds if you develop pain, persistent tenderness, itching, swelling, discharge, or skin irritation. Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor if ear pain or skin irritation develops; its safety guidance is at Samsung Support. Do not keep testing different sizes through pain, and do not insert objects into the ear canal to relieve pressure.

Seek medical advice promptly for severe pain, sudden hearing changes, bleeding, or symptoms that continue after removing the earbuds. A fit test cannot diagnose an ear condition.

How to decide whether you need a replacement accessory

Consider a model-specific replacement tip when the supplied tip is worn, torn, permanently deformed, or no longer stays attached. Consider a wingtip or stability band when the ear-tip seal is comfortable and consistent but the outer housing still rotates or slips during your normal activity.

Do not buy an accessory solely because it is marketed as “universal.” Confirm the exact model, generation, left/right fit, charging-case clearance, and sensor access. Manufacturer listings establish what the part is designed to fit; they do not prove that every wearer will find it comfortable or stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable fit routine

For future adjustments, use the same short routine so results are comparable:

  1. Wash and dry your hands; clean and dry the earbuds.
  2. Choose one tip size for each ear and attach it completely.
  3. Insert gently and rotate or angle according to the model manual.
  4. Run the supported fit test, if available.
  5. Walk, speak, and move normally for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Write down comfort, stability, and sound-seal observations for each side.
  7. Change only one variable—tip size, position, or accessory—then repeat.

This process separates a sizing problem from an orientation problem and helps you avoid escalating to larger, tighter tips when a simple rotation would have worked.
