To make Windows restore app windows to the monitor positions you used before, open Start > Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection. With that option enabled, Windows can put windows back where they were after you disconnect and reconnect an external display.
For the setting names and current setup steps, see Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance. The instructions below lead with Windows 11 and note the equivalent Windows 10 behavior where it matters.
Turn on remembered window locations in Windows 11
Use this procedure while your monitors are connected so you can confirm that Windows sees the complete setup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect every monitor. Plug the displays into the computer or docking station and turn them on.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Scroll to Multiple displays and expand that section if it is collapsed.
- Enable Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- Decide whether to enable Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. Turn it on if you want windows on a disconnected screen hidden until that display is available again; leave it off if you prefer Windows to keep them visible in the remaining desktop when possible.
The first option is the one that addresses remembered app positions. The minimize option controls what happens at the moment a monitor is unplugged or otherwise disconnected; it is a separate control in the same section.

What the two Multiple displays options do
| Option | When it matters | Result documented by Microsoft |
|---|---|---|
| Remember window locations based on monitor connection | After the monitor arrangement changes because a display is disconnected and later connected again | Windows restores windows to their previous locations when the computer is re-docked. |
| Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected | At the time an external monitor is disconnected | Windows minimizes windows that were on the disconnected monitor. |
These settings are useful for a laptop that alternates between a mobile screen and a desk with one or more external monitors. They do not replace normal window-management tools: the remembered-location option concerns monitor connections, while Snap is for arranging windows that are currently open.
Make the monitor map match your desk
Windows can remember a position only in relation to the display arrangement it detects. If the numbered displays in Settings are in the wrong order or height, a window may appear to return to an unexpected place even though the memory option is enabled.
- Stay on Settings > System > Display.
- At the top of the page, locate the numbered display icons.
- Drag each icon so the on-screen arrangement matches the physical layout on your desk. For example, place the icon for a monitor that sits to the left of the laptop screen on the left side of the diagram.
- Select Apply.
- Move the pointer across the boundaries to confirm that it travels from one physical screen to the next in the expected direction.
Microsoft’s screen-resolution and layout instructions cover selecting a display and changing its layout. Correcting the map is especially important when monitors have different heights: align the icons vertically so the pointer and windows cross at the same relative position as they do on the desk.
If Windows does not see one of the monitors
The remembered-location setting cannot restore a window to a display that Windows has not detected. Fix detection first.
Check the physical connection
- Confirm that each video cable is firmly connected to the computer or to the dock.
- Check the monitor’s power and input selection.
- If the display is connected through a dock, reseat the dock connection as well as the monitor cable.
Microsoft specifically recommends checking cables connected to the PC or dock before using the software detection control.
Run Detect
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Expand Multiple displays.
- Select Detect.
After Windows finds the screen, return to the display diagram, place the numbered icon correctly, and select Apply. Then verify that Remember window locations based on monitor connection is still enabled.

Check the display mode
In the Display page, select the display you want to configure and review the available display arrangement controls. A monitor that is present but configured in an unintended arrangement can make a restored window look misplaced. The official multiple-monitor support page explains the display-selection and arrangement workflow for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
What happens when you undock and reconnect
Microsoft says that when a computer is undocked, windows on the external monitor are minimized, and when the computer is re-docked, Windows puts those windows back where they were. This is the scenario the remembered-location setting is designed to handle.
The exact visual result depends on which displays are connected at the time. If a monitor is absent, its windows may be minimized when the related option is enabled. When that monitor becomes available again through the same setup, Windows can restore the windows to their previous monitor locations.
Use the monitor connection setting for automatic recovery across docked and undocked sessions. Do not use it as a substitute for correcting a display map: if the map is wrong, first drag the display icons into the correct physical order and apply the change.

Use Snap when you want to arrange open windows now
Windows Snap solves a different problem. It lets you place and resize open windows using screen edges, keyboard controls, Snap Assist, and available layouts. Microsoft’s Snap Your Windows guide documents those controls.
| Task | Use |
|---|---|
| Restore an app to the monitor it used before a monitor was disconnected and reconnected | Remember window locations based on monitor connection |
| Place several currently open windows into a deliberate side-by-side or grid arrangement | Snap, using an edge, keyboard shortcut, Snap Assist, or a layout |
| Make pointer travel and window placement match the physical monitor order | Drag the numbered display icons in Display settings, then select Apply |
You can use both: first set the correct monitor map and enable connection-based memory, then use Snap to arrange the windows you want on each screen during the current session.
A reliable desk-and-laptop workflow
If you regularly move between a laptop-only setup and a multi-monitor desk, use the following sequence to avoid confusing a layout problem with a memory problem.

- Prepare the desk setup. Connect the monitors to the PC or dock and turn them on.
- Confirm detection. In Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays, use Detect if a screen is missing.
- Correct the map. Drag the numbered icons to mirror the physical left-to-right and top-to-bottom arrangement, select Apply, and test pointer movement.
- Enable memory. Turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- Choose disconnect behavior. Enable Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected if minimizing is preferable when you unplug; otherwise leave that option off.
- Arrange your work. Use Snap or manual dragging to put each open app where you want it.
- Test the transition. Disconnect or undock, observe what happens to windows, reconnect, and check that the displays return to the same physical arrangement.
Testing after the display map is corrected isolates the two variables: a missing or misordered monitor is a detection/layout issue, while a window that does not return after a successful reconnect points to the connection-memory workflow.

A window is minimized after you unplug a monitor
This is expected when Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected is enabled. Reconnect the monitor to give Windows the display on which the window was previously located. If you do not want this minimizing behavior, return to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and turn that option off; the separate remembered-location option can remain enabled.
A monitor is missing from the Display page
Check the monitor and PC-or-dock cables, then select Multiple displays > Detect. Until the display appears in Windows, no window-position setting can place an app on it.
The displays appear in the wrong order
Drag the numbered icons to match the physical arrangement, select Apply, and test pointer movement across the screens. Do not try to compensate by repeatedly dragging app windows; correct the desktop map first.
The monitor is detected, but the window returns to the wrong screen
Recheck the numbered display map and the connection-based memory checkbox. A monitor that has been assigned a different position in the diagram can make the result appear wrong even when Windows is following the saved arrangement.

Windows 10 note
Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, and the setting is found under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays. However, Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use Windows 10, the documented steps may apply to your installation, but moving to a supported Windows release is the safer long-term choice for security and maintenance.
Checklist before you disconnect the laptop
- Every monitor is visible in Display settings.
- The numbered display icons match the physical arrangement.
- You selected Apply after moving any display icon.
- Remember window locations based on monitor connection is enabled.
- You have chosen whether Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected fits your workflow.
- Windows are arranged with Snap or manual dragging as desired.
Once those conditions are met, Windows has the configuration it needs to restore windows when the external monitors are connected again. If the result is still wrong, repeat the detection and display-map checks before changing window arrangements individually.
