You can often make a slow Windows 11 PC feel more responsive by finding what is slowing it down, then addressing that cause. Start with Task Manager, Windows Update, Windows Security, storage, and startup apps before changing visual or power settings. Results depend on the PC and workload: Microsoft’s guidance does not substantiate a 200% performance gain, and software changes may not overcome older hardware.

1. Find out what is slow

First, identify the symptom: a slow sign-in, sluggish apps, stuttering games, or an unresponsive PC. The likely fix depends on the problem. A crowded startup can delay sign-in, while an app that uses unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources can make the whole PC feel slow.

  1. Right-click Start and choose Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, look for apps or processes using an unusually large share of CPU, memory, or disk while the PC is sluggish. Close an app you recognize and are not using; do not end unfamiliar processes just because their names are unfamiliar.
  3. Open Performance to see current CPU, memory, and disk activity. Check during the slowdown rather than relying on a reading taken when the PC is idle.

Task Manager is a resource monitor as well as a startup manager, according to Microsoft’s guide to Windows system configuration tools.

2. Install relevant Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. If the issue began after a recent change, note that timing before making other adjustments.

Check the optional driver updates only when they are relevant to your device or a problem you are troubleshooting. Installing every optional driver is not a universal performance fix; choose updates appropriate to your PC.

3. Scan for malware

Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so scan if the PC is unexpectedly slow or behaving unusually. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. Microsoft includes malware checks among its recommended steps for improving PC performance.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

4. Check storage and free space carefully

Low storage can hinder performance and leave too little room for Windows updates. Open Settings > System > Storage to see how space is being used. Windows Storage settings groups usage by category so you can investigate what is taking up space.

  1. Review the categories and identify files or apps you no longer need.
  2. Use Cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense if available, and review what Windows proposes to remove.
  3. Delete only items you are comfortable losing. You do not need to delete personal files to follow these performance steps.

If an update cannot complete because the PC lacks space, Microsoft explains options in Free up space for Windows updates. External storage, including a portable SSD, can be useful for that narrow storage need or for moving files; it is not a general Windows speed booster.

5. Reduce unnecessary startup activity

Apps that launch at sign-in can lengthen startup and use resources in the background. Review Settings > Apps > Startup or open Task Manager > Startup apps. Use Task Manager’s impact labels to prioritize apps you do not need immediately; Microsoft defines those labels using startup CPU and disk use in its startup-app guidance.

  • Disable apps you recognize and do not need to open automatically.
  • Keep security tools, accessibility features, input tools, and hardware utilities you rely on.
  • Do not disable every entry simply to make the list shorter; weigh convenience at sign-in against background activity.

6. Reduce visual effects if you prefer responsiveness

Animations and other visual effects use system resources. If you value responsiveness more than visual polish, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the result, and choose Adjust for best performance. The interface may look plainer, with fewer visual effects. Microsoft lists this as an option in its performance guidance.

7. Choose a power mode for the situation

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a mode under Power mode, if your device offers the setting. Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance, but it can increase electricity use, make a laptop warmer, and shorten battery life. Use it for a demanding task when plugged in; for ordinary mobile use, Balanced or an efficiency-focused mode may be a better fit. Available choices can vary by device. See Microsoft’s power-mode instructions.

8. Restart and check the original problem again

Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, restart the PC, then repeat the task that felt slow. Recheck Task Manager while the symptom is happening. If startup improved but a particular app still stalls, focus on that app’s resource use rather than changing unrelated settings.

9. Know when software fixes have reached their limit

If the PC remains slow after these steps, the limiting factor may be its hardware capacity or age. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement and says upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution in some cases (Microsoft Support, “Tips to improve PC performance in Windows”).

There is no universal part upgrade established by that guidance. Before considering a component change, check the exact PC model, what can be upgraded, and whether the workload is limited by storage, memory, or another component. A change that does not address the actual bottleneck may not help.

If games are the only thing that feels slow

For games running in a window, Windows 11 has a specific setting called Optimizations for windowed games. Its relevance is limited to applicable windowed games; it is not a general fix for slow startup, everyday app performance, or all games. See Microsoft’s instructions for windowed-game optimizations.
