Quick answer: TikTok gives you three separate controls: make the entire account private, choose an audience for one post, and turn off the app’s built-in video downloads. Use the account and post controls to limit viewing; use Privacy > Downloads to limit saving. These settings reduce access and in-app downloading, but they cannot stop someone from sharing a link, recording the screen, or redistributing a file they already obtained.
Understand the three privacy controls
Account privacy, post privacy, and download permissions solve different problems. Changing one does not automatically give you the same control as changing the others.

A practical setup is to decide who should be able to watch first, then separately decide whether those viewers should get TikTok’s download option.
Make your entire TikTok account private
Use this setting when you want every post to require follower approval rather than managing videos one at a time.

- Open the TikTok app and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy.
- Turn on Private account.
On a private account, you approve follower requests. Only approved followers can view your posts and profile details such as your likes and follower/following lists, according to TikTok’s Help Center.
What a private account does not hide
Privacy does not make the account invisible or unsearchable. Your account name, username, and profile photo remain visible to people on or off TikTok. Someone can therefore identify the account even when they cannot see its posts.
When account privacy is the better choice
- You post personal material and want one consistent audience rule.
- You do not want to audit each new post’s audience setting.
- You are comfortable approving followers before they can see your feed.
If you need a public profile for discovery but have one sensitive video, keep the account public and use that post’s individual privacy control instead.

Restrict one TikTok video without making the account private
TikTok lets a post have its own audience setting. This is useful when most of your profile can remain visible but one video should be limited.
For a new post
- Create the video and proceed to TikTok’s posting screen.
- Find the audience or privacy control for the post. TikTok may label it as who can watch the post or use similar wording.
- Select the most restrictive audience that still meets your purpose.
- Publish only after checking the selected audience on the final posting screen.
For a video that is already posted
- Open your profile and select the video.
- Open the post’s options and look for its privacy or audience setting.
- Change the audience and save the change.
TikTok’s exact labels and available audience choices can vary by account, age, app version, and geography. The official Help Center identifies this feature as Post privacy settings, but the available choices should be read from the controls shown in your own app rather than assumed from another account.
What post privacy controls—and what it does not
A post-level audience setting changes who may view that particular post. It does not automatically change the audience for your other videos, and it does not by itself switch off TikTok’s download function. If preventing in-app downloads matters, review the separate Downloads setting as well.

Turn off TikTok video downloads
This is the account setting for limiting TikTok’s built-in download button on videos and photos you have posted.

- Tap Profile in the TikTok app.
- Tap Menu ☰.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy.
- Open Downloads.
- Switch Video downloads off.
TikTok describes the effect this way:
“When you turn the video downloads setting off, people can’t download videos or photos you’ve already posted or your future content.”
That means the setting applies to existing posts as well as posts you publish later through TikTok’s own download feature. It is not a recall mechanism: a file someone downloaded while downloads were enabled remains on that person’s device.

Sharing can still happen after downloads are disabled
TikTok says people may still share a post using a link or direct messages on third-party platforms. Disabling downloads therefore limits one saving method; it is not a guarantee that nobody can copy, screen-record, or redistribute what they can view.
Age, account, and Family Pairing restrictions
Download controls are not identical for every user.

- Accounts for users under 16 cannot turn downloads on.
- For ages 13–15, TikTok says the download setting cannot be changed.
- For ages 16–17, enabling downloads requires a public account.
- TikTok’s teen privacy information says accounts for ages 13–17 are private by default.
- Family Pairing controls may affect whether a teen can change privacy or download settings.
Defaults and available controls can also depend on local law and the account’s region. If a switch is missing or locked, check the account’s age category, whether the profile is private, and any Family Pairing restrictions before treating it as an app error.

Choose the right combination for your situation

Check that your settings have the intended effect
After changing privacy controls, use this checklist before sharing sensitive material:
- Confirm Private account shows the state you intended under Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy.
- Open the individual post and verify its audience label; do not assume it inherited the account’s previous setting.
- Under Privacy > Downloads, confirm whether Video downloads is off.
- Review the post from a viewer account or ask an approved follower to confirm what is visible, especially after changing an existing post.
- Remember that your name, username, and profile photo remain visible even with a private account.
Troubleshoot missing or ineffective privacy options
The Downloads switch is missing or cannot be enabled
First check whether the account is private. TikTok does not allow downloads to be turned on for a private account. Next check the account’s age category: users under 16 cannot enable downloads, and ages 13–15 cannot change that setting. A 16–17-year-old needs a public account to enable it. Family Pairing or regional rules can impose additional limits.
A post still appears in places you did not expect
Reopen the specific post and inspect its audience control. Post privacy is separate from account privacy, and a change to one video does not necessarily change other posts. Also remember that a link or a copy made before the privacy change may continue to circulate outside TikTok.
The menu wording is different
TikTok’s labels and feature availability can change with app version, age, and geography. Start from Profile, open Menu ☰, then Settings and privacy and Privacy; look for the account, post-audience, or download control under the labels shown on your device.
A privacy routine that is easier to maintain
- Decide whether the audience rule should apply to the whole account or only one post.
- Set account privacy before accepting follower requests if approval is important.
- Set the audience on every sensitive post during publishing, and recheck it when editing an existing post.
- Turn off Video downloads before publishing content you do not want saved through TikTok’s download button.
- Keep copies of your own originals and assume that anything a viewer can see could be captured by another method.
These steps separate access control from download control, which prevents the common mistake of treating a private account or a post audience choice as complete protection against copying.
