Start with the setting that matches the problem: increase text size when letters are too small, use display zoom or magnification when the whole interface is hard to see, and adjust contrast, color or brightness when size alone does not help. Android, iPhone, Windows and web apps expose different controls, and some apps ignore system preferences. Change one setting at a time, then check the apps you actually use.
Choose the adjustment that matches the barrier
“Make everything bigger” is not one universal command. Text size changes letters while preserving more of the existing layout; display zoom enlarges interface elements as well; magnification enlarges a temporary area or the entire screen. Contrast, color and dimming settings address different visual problems and can be useful even when text is already large.

A practical order is: increase text size, try bold text, test display zoom, then add magnification or contrast/color changes for the remaining problem. Review each important app after every change because support varies by platform, version and software.

Make text larger on Android
Google’s current Android accessibility guidance places the main controls under Settings, but manufacturers can rename or move them. If your menus differ, search Settings for Font size or Display size.

Increase font size
- Open Settings.
- Open Font size (on some devices this is inside Accessibility or Display size and text).
- Move the slider toward the larger end and read the preview.
- Open several apps you use every day, including messaging, email and a browser, and check whether text reflows without being clipped.
Google’s current help describes an Android font-size range that can reach up to 200 percent. That is a platform option, not a promise that every device or app will expose the same maximum. Some apps do not use the font-size setting, so look for an in-app text or accessibility control when one screen remains small.
Enlarge the whole interface with Display size
- Open Settings and search for Display size.
- Move the display-size slider until icons, buttons and other controls are easy to locate.
- Check landscape and portrait orientations if you use both.
- Return to a smaller value if important controls become unreachable or a layout loses information.
Display size affects more than letters. It can increase icons, spacing and controls, which is useful when the difficulty is finding or activating interface elements rather than reading paragraphs.
Use bold, outline or high-contrast text
On current Android guidance, Bold text is found under Accessibility > Display size and text. Turn it on when ordinary-weight type looks faint. Google notes that some apps do not use the bold-font preference.
Android 16 and later documentation includes Outline text. Android 15 and earlier guidance points to High-contrast text instead. These labels and availability depend on the Android release and device maker, so use the setting-search field if the exact wording is absent.
Adjust color, inversion and dimming
- Color correction: helps distinguish colors for some forms of color-vision difference. It is not available on every Android device.
- Color inversion: reverses screen colors and may help in a particular lighting situation, but it can make photos and media look unnatural.
- Extra dim: reduces luminance beyond the normal brightness range where supported. Google’s current help notes a location change for Pixel 10 and later; other devices may place it elsewhere.
These controls address contrast, color perception or glare; they do not replace a larger font. Test them with both text and controls, and turn off any option that makes one category harder to interpret.
Make text and controls larger on iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone guide uses a separate accessibility area for text and display changes. The instructions below apply to iPhone; they do not establish identical menus on iPad, Mac or third-party applications.

Use Larger Text
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size.
- Tap Larger Text.
- Move the slider to the size you can read comfortably.
- Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes to reveal additional, larger steps when the standard range is insufficient.
Apple describes this preference as applying to supported apps. If one app does not change, check that app for its own text-size control or use iPhone screen Zoom.

Turn on Bold Text
In Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, turn on Bold Text. iPhone may need to apply the change across the interface. Bold text can improve the visibility of thin strokes, but it may change line breaks and available space.
Use Display Zoom for the whole interface
Apple’s Display Zoom option enlarges interface elements rather than changing only a paragraph’s font. Open the display-related settings, select Display Zoom, choose the enlarged view and follow the on-screen confirmation. The available choices can vary by iPhone model and iOS version.
Use screen Zoom or temporary text enlargement
For occasional close reading, iPhone’s screen Zoom enlarges a movable portion of the display. Apple also documents a temporary hover-to-enlarge feature for viewing text larger without permanently changing every screen. These approaches are useful when you need detail briefly but want the normal layout the rest of the time.
Change color and visual presentation
The same Display & Text Size area includes display-color adjustments. Options can include stronger contrast, color filters and color inversion. Choose the adjustment that solves the specific problem, then verify text, icons, photographs and status indicators; a change that helps one element can reduce clarity elsewhere.

Use the scaling controls the device and app provide
Microsoft’s Windows app guidance recommends validating software with Magnifier, global display scaling and text-size settings. The exact consumer menu path depends on the Windows release, display configuration and app. Use the operating system’s display or accessibility settings and the app’s own preferences, then test at the scale you expect people to use.

Global scaling enlarges more of the interface; an app-level text setting may affect only that program. If a control disappears after scaling, look for a responsive layout, maximize the window or reduce the scale one step. A setting is not successful if it makes a required action unavailable.
Increase the size of a web page
Browser zoom is the normal user-agent path for enlarging a web page. Use the browser’s built-in zoom control and check headings, form fields, menus, tables and dialogs at the enlarged level. Web content should remain usable when enlarged, but individual sites can contain layout defects or controls that do not reflow correctly.
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.4 states that, except for captions and images of text, text should be resizable up to 200 percent without loss of content or functionality. This is a web-content accessibility criterion, not a guarantee that every native application or desktop program behaves the same way.

When the screen itself is the problem
For a monitor, television, e-reader or specialized display, first check the device’s own text-size, scaling, contrast and brightness menus. If those controls are missing, operating-system magnification or the application’s accessibility options may still help. Availability is hardware- and software-dependent, so do not assume that a control found on one screen exists on another.
Fix contrast, color and brightness separately
Larger type cannot compensate for text that blends into its background. Google’s accessibility guidance explains that sufficient color contrast makes text and images easier to read and comprehend. Contrast is especially important in bright surroundings or when display brightness is low.
Use the WCAG contrast thresholds as a design check

These are minimum WCAG 2.2 criteria, not a prescription for an individual’s preferred colors. Thin or unusual letterforms can appear fainter than a ratio suggests, so stronger strokes or more contrast may be appropriate.

Do not communicate meaning with hue alone
Color calculations do not fully represent how people perceive hue. Microsoft gives red-on-green as an example that can remain difficult for some users even when the colors seem distinct. Pair color with labels, icons, patterns, position or text, and make sure the non-color cue remains visible after color filters or inversion.

Dark and light themes can feel different under different lighting and for different visual needs. The relevant test is whether text, controls and states remain distinguishable for the people using the interface. Offer a theme choice where practical and verify contrast in each theme rather than treating one as automatically more readable.
How designers and site owners keep interfaces readable
Preserve user resizing
Do not block browser zoom, text resizing or operating-system scaling. Test web pages at 200 percent and confirm that content does not overlap, clip, disappear or become impossible to operate. Responsive breakpoints may change as users zoom; that is acceptable if all content and functionality remain reachable.
Use real text instead of text baked into images
W3C guidance notes that images of text pixelate when enlarged and make foreground and background color adjustments harder. Use selectable, semantic text for headings, labels, instructions and buttons whenever practical. If an image must contain words, provide an equivalent text alternative and do not make the image the only way to complete a task.
Give touch controls enough area
Android’s developer accessibility guidance recommends a touch target of at least 48 by 48 density-independent pixels (dp) for touch interfaces. This is a control-size recommendation, not a font-size setting. Keep the interactive area large even when the visible icon is small, and leave enough spacing to prevent accidental taps.

- Increase text to the largest supported setting and inspect every screen.
- Test global display scaling or browser zoom, not just a designer’s default viewport.
- Check portrait, landscape, narrow windows and high-density displays.
- Look for clipped labels, overlapping dialogs, truncated buttons and horizontal scrolling that hides actions.
- Verify keyboard, touch and screen-magnifier operation where those input methods are supported.
- Check normal, bold and high-contrast text as well as light and dark themes.
Troubleshoot the common failures
Only some text became larger
The app may not support the operating system’s text preference. Look for an in-app text-size or accessibility setting. If none exists, use display zoom or magnification, and report the compatibility problem to the app developer.

Text is larger but buttons are still hard to use
Text size does not enlarge every control. Increase display size or global scaling, use magnification for a specific action, and check whether the control has a larger touch target. On touch interfaces, the Android recommendation is at least 48 by 48 dp.
Enlargement causes clipping or overlap
Reduce the scale one step only if necessary to restore access, then try a responsive layout, a wider window or an app-specific reading mode. For a website, the author should correct fixed-height containers, hidden overflow and controls that cannot reflow at 200 percent.
High contrast helps one screen but hurts another
Contrast and inversion can alter icons, photos, charts and status colors. Keep the setting if it improves the tasks you perform most, but use labels and redundant visual cues where you control the interface. Try a different contrast option rather than assuming full inversion is the only solution.
The screen is uncomfortable even with readable text
Adjust brightness for the room, try a supported extra-dim option, and test a different color presentation. Avoid dimming so far that text loses contrast. If discomfort or visual difficulty persists across devices, seek professional advice; accessibility settings are not a diagnosis.
A practical setup sequence
- Identify the failure: decide whether letters are too small, strokes too faint, colors too similar, the whole interface too small, or the screen too bright.
- Change text size first: use Android Font size or iPhone Larger Text, then check the apps that matter.
- Add weight: enable Bold Text, Outline text or High-contrast text when thin strokes remain difficult.
- Scale the interface: use Display size, Display Zoom or global scaling when icons and controls—not just words—need enlargement.
- Use magnification selectively: reserve screen Zoom or Magnifier for detailed reading when permanent scaling wastes too much space.
- Correct contrast and color: choose a setting that separates foreground and background and does not depend on hue alone.
- Recheck tasks: open a long article, a form, a menu, a dialog and a media screen. Confirm that every action remains visible and operable.
- Keep an app-specific fallback: when a program ignores system settings, use its own controls or a browser/OS magnifier rather than assuming the global setting failed.
What “readable on any screen” can and cannot mean
No single value works on every device, app, distance or lighting condition. Android and iPhone expose different controls; Android manufacturers vary the names and locations; Windows guidance depends on the release and application; and third-party apps can ignore system preferences. The reliable goal is not one universal setting but a combination of user-controlled size, scaling, contrast and magnification that preserves content and functionality.
For people building interfaces, that means respecting resizing, meeting contrast minima, using actual text and keeping controls operable at enlarged settings. For people changing a device, it means starting with text size, testing support in important apps and adding display zoom or magnification only where the remaining barrier requires it.
