To make suspicious stew, combine one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower in a crafting grid. The flower determines the stew’s status effect, so the same mushroom-and-bowl recipe can produce a useful food, a short utility boost, or a dangerous debuff.
Java and Bedrock use the same ingredient pattern and flower mapping, but the effect lasts for different amounts of time. The exact durations below come from an effects table updated September 25, 2026, so check your game version before relying on a number in a timed situation.

What you need
- One red mushroom
- One brown mushroom
- One bowl
- One flower of your choice
The ingredients make one suspicious stew. The recipe is not tied to a particular flower: changing the flower changes the effect. A stew crafted with a blue orchid is therefore a different item in practical use from one crafted with a wither rose, even though both use the same two mushrooms and bowl.
Suspicious stew restores 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation. Its maximum stack size is one, so each bowl occupies its own inventory slot. Those nutrition and stack figures are documented by the Minecraft Wiki (2025) and Microsoft Learn (2026).

Craft suspicious stew step by step
- Collect the mushrooms. Put one red mushroom and one brown mushroom in your inventory. You need both colors; two mushrooms of the same color do not satisfy the documented ingredient set.
- Choose a flower. Select the effect you want from the table below. Do not choose by appearance alone: several flowers create harmful effects.
- Get a bowl. Have one empty bowl ready before opening the crafting interface.
- Open a crafting grid. Use the inventory crafting area or a crafting table.
- Place the four ingredients. Add one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower. The result is suspicious stew.
- Move the stew to your inventory. Keep the flower choice recorded or store the stew with other stews made from the same flower, because the finished item does not visibly tell you which effect it contains.
The important decision happens before step five: the flower is the effect selector. If you need a known result, craft the stew yourself with a flower you deliberately selected rather than relying on a stew obtained as loot.
Every flower effect and duration
The following values distinguish Java Edition from Bedrock Edition. “Beneficial” means the effect normally helps the player, “harmful” means it can put the player in danger, and “utility” describes an effect whose value depends heavily on the situation.

| Wither Rose | Wither | Harmful | 8 seconds | 6 seconds | Dangerous in ordinary survival play; keep it separate from food flowers. |

Which flower should you use?
For a generally useful food
Use a blue orchid or dandelion for Saturation. Both flowers produce the same effect and the same duration in each edition. This is a practical survival-food recommendation because it adds a beneficial effect without the obvious danger associated with the poisonous, withering, blinding, weakening, or otherwise harmful choices.

- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
For emergency healing
Use an oxeye daisy or poppy for Regeneration. The two flowers are interchangeable for this recipe: each gives 8 seconds in Java and 6 seconds in Bedrock. Crafting one in advance can give you a compact emergency option when ordinary food alone is not the effect you need.
For a planned utility task
Allium, cornflower, and torchflower can be appropriate when you have a specific short task in mind. Allium gives Fire Resistance, cornflower gives Jump Boost, and torchflower gives Night Vision. Their durations are short, especially in Bedrock, so consume them immediately before the task rather than treating them as long-term potions.

Flowers to treat as hazards
Azure bluet causes Blindness, lily of the valley causes Poison, tulips cause Weakness, and wither rose causes Wither. These are not neutral recipe variants. Keep them out of a food-storage area and never consume an unidentified suspicious stew when you are already in danger. The effect is not visibly communicated by the finished stew, which makes accidental selection a realistic inventory mistake.
How to manage an item that hides its effect
Suspicious stew does not visibly communicate its flower or status effect after it has been crafted. Once several stews look identical in your inventory, you cannot safely identify one by its icon alone. Use a simple storage discipline:
Rank #3
- Keep each flower-specific batch in a separate inventory slot or chest position.
- Store beneficial and harmful variants in different areas.
- Record the flower next to the container if you maintain more than one type.
- Consume a stew only when you know which flower was used.
- Do not mix villager- or loot-obtained stew with a known batch unless you are willing to treat its effect as uncertain.
The non-stackable nature of the item makes this separation easier to maintain conceptually but more expensive in inventory space: every stew uses a separate slot, even when several have the same effect.
Getting the ingredients in survival
Mushrooms and flower
Your crafting plan needs one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, and one flower. The exact flower you choose determines the result, so collect the flower before crafting if you are preparing a named use such as regeneration or saturation. If you only collect “any flower” and decide later, you may accidentally make a harmful variant.
Bowls
Bring an empty bowl as the fourth ingredient. Because suspicious stew does not stack, carry only as many bowls and ingredient sets as you can use or store safely. Planning the bowl count prevents a trip from ending with mushrooms and flowers but no container.
Edition awareness
The broad recipe works in both Java and Bedrock. The main edition-specific difference for normal use is the effect duration. If you are following a timed plan, select the Bedrock value when playing Bedrock and the Java value when playing Java; do not assume the longer Java window applies everywhere.

Alternative ways to obtain suspicious stew
Brown mooshroom method
A brown mooshroom can be fed a flower and then milked with a bowl to produce the corresponding suspicious stew. The flower you feed determines the effect, so the same safety rules apply: use a beneficial flower for a survival supply, and avoid feeding a harmful flower unless you have a deliberate reason to create that result. This method is useful when you have access to a brown mooshroom but want to avoid assembling the two-mushroom recipe for every bowl.
Generated loot
Suspicious stew can occur in shipwreck and desert-well loot. Loot is a convenient discovery route because it requires no crafting ingredients at the moment you open the container, but the finished stew still does not visibly reveal its effect. Treat found stew as unidentified until you have a reliable record of its source and flower, and do not consume it during combat, near hazards, or when a harmful effect would be costly.
Expert farmer villager
An expert farmer villager can sell suspicious stew for one emerald. This provides a renewable trading route if that villager and trade are available in your world. The same identification issue remains: keep purchased stew separate from flower-labeled batches unless you know which effect the individual item represents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between crafting, a brown mooshroom, loot, and trading
| Acquisition route | What you must have | Best reason to choose it | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crafting | One red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one chosen flower | You want a known effect and control over the flower | Requires all four ingredients and produces a non-stackable item. |
| Brown mooshroom | A brown mooshroom, a flower, and a bowl | You already have the mob and want to turn flowers into matching stew | The fed flower still controls the effect; harmful flowers remain hazardous. |
| Shipwreck or desert-well loot | Access to the generated structure and its container | You want to find stew while exploring | The item’s effect is not visibly communicated, so identification is uncertain. |
| Expert farmer trade | An available expert farmer villager and one emerald per stew | You prefer an emerald-based supply route | Purchased stew still takes one slot and does not advertise its effect. |
Crafting is the clearest choice when the effect matters. The other routes are alternatives for availability, exploration, or trading convenience, not a way to bypass the need for careful identification.

Using suspicious stew safely
Before you eat
- Confirm your edition so you know which duration applies.
- Confirm the flower used, especially if the stew came from a mixed storage area.
- Check that you are not about to enter a situation where Blindness, Poison, Weakness, or Wither would be dangerous.
- Make sure your task fits the short duration. A four- to eight-second effect is a brief window, not a permanent status.
During a timed task
Consume a utility stew immediately before the action it supports. Fire Resistance, Jump Boost, Night Vision, and the other listed effects have durations measured in seconds. The Bedrock values are shorter for every effect in the table, so leave less time between eating and beginning the task when playing Bedrock.

After consumption in Bedrock
Bedrock’s item definition lists a bowl returned after the stew is consumed. Account for that returned bowl when planning inventory space, especially if you carry several single-slot stews. The documented nutrition values remain 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation.
Troubleshooting the recipe
The recipe does not produce suspicious stew
- Check that one mushroom is red and the other is brown.
- Check that a bowl is included, not just the two mushrooms and flower.
- Check that exactly one flower is being used.
- Verify that you are placing the ingredients in a functioning crafting grid.
- Confirm that you are not confusing a different mushroom or decorative item with the required ingredient.
The stew gives an unexpected effect
The flower controls the result. Recheck which flower was in the grid, and remember that tulips, azure bluets, lily of the valley, and wither roses are harmful choices. If the stew was found in a shipwreck, desert well, or obtained through a villager, the item itself does not show the effect; do not infer the result from its appearance.
The effect ended too quickly
Compare the duration with your edition. For example, Regeneration lasts 8 seconds in Java but 6 seconds in Bedrock, while Saturation lasts 0.35 seconds in Java and 0.3 seconds in Bedrock. These are intentionally brief effects, so use the stew at the start of the action rather than several seconds beforehand.
The inventory is filling with bowls and single stews
Suspicious stew has a maximum stack size of one. Store flower-specific stews separately, carry only the number you expect to use, and leave room for the bowl returned after consumption in Bedrock.
A practical preparation checklist
- Decide whether you need Saturation, Regeneration, Fire Resistance, Jump Boost, Night Vision, or no effect at all from the listed flowers.
- Reject the harmful flowers unless you intentionally need Blindness, Poison, Weakness, or Wither.
- Collect one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and the selected flower.
- Craft the stew in your inventory grid or a crafting table.
- Separate the finished item from any unidentified stew.
- Write down the flower or use a dedicated storage position.
- Check your Java or Bedrock edition before planning around the duration.
- Consume it only when the short effect window matches the task.
Bottom line
Suspicious stew is made with one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower. Choose blue orchid or dandelion for Saturation, oxeye daisy or poppy for Regeneration, and treat azure bluet, lily of the valley, tulips, and wither rose as dangerous ingredients. The recipe works in Java and Bedrock, but every listed duration is edition-specific, the item does not reveal its effect, and each stew occupies a separate inventory slot.
