Match the fix to the delay: use OpenSSH connection sharing when repeated logins take too long, Mosh when typing in an interactive terminal feels laggy or a session drops as you roam, and compression only as a workload-specific experiment. None makes every SSH task or network universally faster.
First identify what feels slow
“Slow SSH” can describe three different problems, and each calls for a different response:
- A new session takes a while to open: connection setup is being repeated. OpenSSH connection sharing can reuse an existing master connection for later sessions to the same host.
- Keystrokes in an open terminal arrive late: the interactive session is waiting on network round trips. Mosh is designed to make terminal input feel responsive through local prediction and screen-state synchronization.
- The session breaks when your network changes or drops: Mosh is designed to tolerate roaming and intermittent connectivity, provided its server component is available and UDP traffic can reach it.
These mechanisms address different delays. Connection sharing does not speed up keystrokes in a running command, and Mosh does not replace every SSH workflow. The project documentation and OpenSSH manual explain the mechanisms, but do not establish a universal diagnostic test or current benchmark for every network.
Reuse setup work with OpenSSH connection sharing
OpenSSH can keep a master connection and route later client sessions through it. When that master is active or retained, subsequent connections to the same host can avoid repeating some connection setup. This is useful if the wait happens each time you open another SSH session; it is not a fix for high interactive latency after you are already connected.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The SSH client manual documents master mode and ControlPersist. A configuration may use the ControlMaster, ControlPath, and ControlPersist options, but exact syntax, socket-path requirements, and behavior can vary by operating system and installed OpenSSH version. Check the manual for your local client before applying a configuration. OpenSSH ssh_config manual.
Use Mosh for interactive typing lag and roaming
The Mosh project describes it as “a replacement for interactive SSH terminals.” It uses SSH to log in and start a server-side component, then carries the interactive session over UDP. Mosh maintains terminal screen state at both ends and predicts keystrokes locally, correcting those predictions when the server’s state arrives. That design can make typing feel responsive despite network delay and can help a session survive address changes or temporary interruptions. Mosh project documentation · Mosh project repository.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What you need
- Mosh installed on the client and Mosh or
mosh-serveravailable on the remote machine. - SSH connectivity for login and server startup.
- UDP connectivity between client and server for the Mosh session. If UDP is blocked or unavailable, Mosh cannot provide its session transport.
What Mosh does not replace
Mosh is for interactive terminals, not a drop-in replacement for all SSH uses. The project documents that it does not support X forwarding or non-interactive SSH uses such as port forwarding. Keep ordinary SSH for file transfer, tunnels, remote commands, and other workflows that depend on those SSH features. Mosh project documentation.
How strong is the latency evidence?
A 2012 paper by the Mosh authors reported median keystroke response latency below 5 ms with Mosh, compared with 503 ms for SSH, in an experiment over a commercial EV-DO (3G) network. Those figures describe that particular historical experiment; they are not a current universal measurement or a prediction for your connection. Mosh paper.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Try compression only when the workload might benefit
OpenSSH provides the -C compression option. Its manual says compression may help on slow connections, but can also slow things down. It does not reduce network round-trip time, so do not assume it will fix delayed interactive keystrokes. Try it with the specific connection and workload where throughput is the concern, and compare the result with compression off. OpenSSH ssh manual.

Choose by symptom
| What is slow or failing? | Best-matched option | Key requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Opening repeated sessions to the same host | OpenSSH connection sharing | An active or retained master connection; it does not address keystroke lag in a running session. |
| Typing in an interactive terminal over a high-latency link | Mosh | Client and server components, SSH for startup, and UDP reachability; not for forwarding or non-interactive SSH uses. |
| Keeping an interactive terminal usable while roaming or briefly disconnected | Mosh | Its session transport requires UDP; ordinary SSH remains useful for incompatible workflows. |
| Slow transfer or other throughput-limited workload | Evaluate OpenSSH compression | Compression may help or may slow the connection; results depend on the link and workload. |
