Make a Soulslike easier by reducing the number of problems you must solve at once, not by trying to remove every mistake. Learn the controls and one enemy pattern, spend stamina and healing deliberately, change your weapon or build when a tactic fails, and use exploration, summons, co-op, or accessibility settings when the game provides them. You still have to read attacks and choose a response, so victories retain the satisfaction of learning.

What “easier” should mean in a Soulslike

Soulslike games do not share one difficulty model. Some use a fixed combat setting and put the adjustment in character progression, equipment, level design, or assistance systems. Others offer several combat presets or granular options. The useful question is not “Which Soulslike is easiest?” It is “Which source of difficulty is blocking me, and does this game offer another way to handle it?”

A fight can feel overwhelming because of several demands arriving together: recognizing an attack, positioning the camera, choosing whether to block or dodge, managing stamina, finding a healing window, and dealing enough damage before the next attack. You can lower the friction by changing one demand at a time. A slower weapon may make damage timing harder but guard breaks easier; a shield may reduce reaction pressure but consume stamina; a summon may divide the boss’s attention while leaving you responsible for positioning and punish windows.

Do not treat a stronger character as a substitute for accessibility support. More health can give you room for an error, but it does not fix a tiny interface, an uncomfortable camera, or a control that is difficult to press. Handle those barriers separately.

Start with the control and resource loop

Before changing your build, make sure you know what the game considers a legal action. Read its control guide and practice in a low-risk area until the essential inputs are automatic. The exact buttons vary by platform and game; the principles below are a checklist, not a claim that every Soulslike uses all of these systems.

Stamina determines how many decisions you can make

In Elden Ring, stamina reaching zero prevents further stamina-consuming actions until it regenerates. That makes an empty bar more than a minor inconvenience: it can remove your ability to attack, guard, sprint, or evade at the moment an enemy’s turn begins. Watch the bar while attacking, and leave enough for the response you expect to need. A short pause that allows regeneration is often safer than one additional hit.

Other games may use a differently named meter or no stamina meter at all. Identify which actions share the resource, whether sprinting drains it, and how quickly it returns after an attack or block. Then build your plan around the resource rather than around a fixed number of swings.

Know what two-handing, skills, shields, and parries actually do

The official Elden Ring Starter Guide explains that two-handing a weapon increases attack power and makes it easier to break an opponent’s guard. It also documents weapon skills and their FP costs, shields, parries, and equipment and item switching. These are different tools with different demands:

  • Two-handing: consider it when you want more damage or guard-breaking pressure and can survive without a shield.
  • Weapon skills: check the skill’s range, recovery, and FP cost. A skill that looks powerful is not useful if it leaves you in an attack you cannot safely finish.
  • Shields: blocking can replace a precise dodge with a stamina and positioning decision. Test how much incoming damage is negated and how much stamina the guard consumes.
  • Parries: use them only when the enemy’s attack has a reliable parry timing and the reward justifies the risk. A failed parry is not the same as a normal block.
  • Equipment and items: arrange frequently used options so you can select them without looking away from the fight. Accidental item cycling is a control problem, not a lack of courage.

Do not assume one of these mechanics is universally optimal. An enemy may be easy to stagger but difficult to parry, or safe to circle but dangerous to block. Match the tool to the encounter.

Turn a failed attempt into information

Hidetaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware, has described the intended process as observing what happens, memorizing it, and learning from mistakes. He has also said that players should feel there is a chance to win a difficult encounter rather than that the game is unfairly punishing them. That is a description of design intent, not a guarantee that every fight will feel fair to every player, but it gives you a useful practice rule: never repeat an attempt unchanged if you do not know why it failed.

Use observation attempts

On one attempt, lower your damage goal. Watch the enemy’s opening move, the attack that follows a missed punish, and the animation that signals a phase change. Notice whether an attack tracks your last position, whether a delayed swing catches an early dodge, and where the recovery ends. You can die while gathering this information and still have made progress.

Change one variable at a time

  1. Name the failure. Examples include “I run out of stamina after blocking,” “the camera loses the target near a wall,” or “I heal during an unsafe recovery.”
  2. Choose one adjustment. Try shorter attack strings, a wider arena position, a shield, a different dodge direction, or a different weapon skill.
  3. Test the same situation. If the boss uses the same opener, apply the new response and compare the result.
  4. Keep or discard the change. If it solves one problem but creates a worse one, revert it and test a different variable.

This method preserves the learning challenge while removing the frustration of making several unmeasured changes between attempts.

Reduce reaction pressure with positioning and defense

Keep space for the response you need

Fight away from walls, corners, stairs, and clutter when the arena allows it. A clear space gives the camera room to turn and makes an attack’s direction easier to read. Backing away is not always safe: some enemies close distance quickly, and some attacks are designed to catch retreating players. Move toward a known safe angle rather than simply holding away from the enemy.

For large enemies, decide whether staying close to a leg, flank, or rear is safer than standing at mid-range. For small, fast enemies, distance may buy time to identify the next move. The correct range is the one that makes the enemy’s cues and your chosen response consistent.

  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

Choose dodge, block, guard break, or parry deliberately

  • Dodge: time the invulnerable portion of the movement against the hit, not against the start of the animation. Avoid rolling repeatedly without seeing the attack; early movement can place you in the path of a delayed follow-up.
  • Block: use a shield or guard when the stamina cost is manageable and the attack does not drain your entire bar. Release the guard briefly when safe if the game regenerates stamina faster that way.
  • Guard break: in Elden Ring, two-handing can make breaking an opponent’s guard easier. Charged attacks, jumping attacks, and suitable weapon skills may support that plan, but the enemy and weapon determine whether it is practical.
  • Parry: commit only after practicing the specific attack. A parry strategy that works on one enemy’s horizontal swing may fail on another’s thrust or delayed strike.

Pick one primary defense and one backup. For example, use a shield for ordinary hits and dodge a grab, or dodge most attacks and block only when the camera makes timing unclear. Fewer choices during the fight can make the same challenge manageable.

Heal only in a real window

Healing is an action with recovery time, not a pause button. Identify a reliable window: after a slow attack, when the enemy is recovering from a missed lunge, or after creating enough distance to prevent immediate contact. If an enemy repeatedly punishes your heal, move farther before healing, use a defensive item if the game offers one, or stop taking damage rather than trying to out-heal it.

In Elden Ring, the publisher identifies upgrading healing flasks as one way to prepare for a difficult encounter. Upgrade capacity or potency when available, but keep the same rule: extra healing gives you more attempts inside the fight; it does not make an unsafe healing animation safe.

Change the plan before demanding faster reactions

A failed tactic is evidence about the tactic, not a verdict on your ability. If your weapon cannot reach the enemy safely, if its recovery is too long, or if its damage type is a poor match, change the plan.

Test a different weapon or moveset

Compare more than the damage number. Ask whether the weapon’s range, speed, stamina cost, stagger potential, and recovery fit the enemy’s openings. A shorter weapon may be easier against a fast target because it returns to neutral quickly; a longer weapon may let you punish without standing inside a sweep. Practice the first two attacks and the retreat from each moveset before taking it into a serious attempt.

Use the relevant skill and build tools

In Elden Ring, Ashes of War can change a weapon’s skill and therefore the options available in an encounter. Try a skill that solves the specific problem: a gap closer when distance is unsafe, a ranged option when approaching is dangerous, or a defensive effect when trading hits is unavoidable. Check its FP cost and recovery, and do not spend all FP before the phase in which the skill matters.

Reallocate or improve attributes only when you understand what the change buys you. More health increases tolerance for a mistake; endurance can support heavier equipment or longer defensive sequences; a damage attribute can shorten the number of openings required. The best choice is the one that removes your most common failure, not the one with the highest theoretical damage.

Use consumables as part of the strategy

Consumables are most useful when they address a known weakness. A protective item can reduce the consequence of a damage type; a status or buff can shorten a dangerous phase; a projectile can finish an enemy without entering a risky range. In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco specifically points to finding a protective consumable recipe as one available way to approach difficulty. Gather enough for planned attempts, but verify the effect and duration in the item description rather than assuming every buff stacks.

Leave, explore, and return stronger when the game permits it

Open progression is one of the strongest forms of difficulty control because it changes your options without changing the enemy’s rules. Bandai Namco presents Elden Ring’s exploration, leveling, weapon and equipment changes, flask upgrades, and other tools as ways to find a solution. Miyazaki likewise recommends approaching the game at your own pace and returning to an obstacle after progressing elsewhere.

  1. Record what ends the attempt: damage type, stamina failure, lack of range, or an unreadable attack.
  2. Explore for the resource that addresses it, such as a weapon upgrade, flask improvement, defensive item, or attribute level.
  3. Practice the new tool on ordinary enemies so its controls are familiar.
  4. Return and test the same encounter with the change, keeping your original notes for comparison.

This preserves challenge because you still have to execute the plan. You are choosing when to face the problem, not asking the game to solve it for you.

Use Spirit Ashes, summons, or co-op when available

Assistance systems can reduce the number of simultaneous decisions. A companion may draw attention while you heal, create a back attack, or give you time to learn a phase. Co-op can add another player’s damage and positioning, but it can also increase enemy health or make behavior less predictable depending on the game.

In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco identifies both Spirit Ashes and summoning other players as intended ways to engage with difficulty. Choose the level of help that supports your goal:

  • Learning solo: use the first attempts to understand attacks and spacing.
  • Partial assistance: summon a Spirit Ash or companion, then focus on recognizing attacks rather than racing to finish.
  • Co-op progression: bring another player when the barrier is execution, repeated losses, or simply wanting a shared experience.

Do not judge a summon by whether it makes the boss trivial. If you want to retain more of the learning challenge, use assistance to survive a phase or practice a specific response, then try the fight again with less help later.

Accessibility is a separate difficulty conversation

A build change cannot solve every input, vision, hearing, or camera barrier. Steam’s accessibility documentation groups features such as adjustable difficulty, text size, subtitles, contrast, camera comfort, and input methods separately because players can encounter different kinds of obstacles. Microsoft’s Xbox accessibility guidance likewise recommends considering distinct gameplay barriers instead of treating difficulty as one universal slider.

Check the game’s settings and the platform’s controller options for the exact title you are playing. Look for:

  • remappable controls, hold-versus-toggle choices, and alternative input methods;
  • subtitle size, speaker labels, visual indicators for important sounds, and contrast options;
  • camera sensitivity, camera shake, target-lock behavior, and motion-reduction settings;
  • color, brightness, and interface adjustments that make enemy cues readable;
  • difficulty or assistance settings, if the game offers them.

These changes do not invalidate learning. They can make the information needed for learning visible, audible, or physically reachable. If a game lacks a setting you need, platform-level features or a configurable controller may help, but check compatibility with the specific game and platform before buying anything.

Compare games by the help they offer, not by an “easiest” ranking

When choosing a Soulslike or a similar action game, compare the systems that can reduce friction. The table uses Elden Ring and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as documented examples of different approaches; it is not a universal ranking, and the latter is not being presented as a Soulslike.

Design question Elden Ring Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Combat difficulty slider Bandai Namco states that there is no setting to lower difficulty and no easy-mode button. Electronic Arts documents multiple combat difficulty levels.
Companion or co-op help Bandai Namco identifies Spirit Ashes and summoning other players. Specific assistance depends on the game’s documented modes; do not assume Soulslike-style summoning.
Leave and progress elsewhere Open-world exploration, leveling, equipment, skills, flask upgrades, and consumables provide alternate routes. Progression and encounter structure differ; check the game’s own options rather than transferring assumptions.
Granular combat assistance Use equipment and in-game mechanics; no universal easy mode is provided. EA documents auto-lock, button-mash settings, and slow mode in addition to difficulty levels.
Accessibility controls Check the current platform and game settings for the options available to your version. Consult EA’s accessibility documentation and the platform settings for the current version.

For any game, ask five questions before committing: Can I change combat difficulty? Can I bring a companion or co-op partner? Can I leave a hard encounter and improve elsewhere? Does the game offer alternate timing or range-based tactics? Which camera, input, subtitle, and visual options exist on my platform?

Troubleshoot the most common “I can’t make progress” situations

“I die before I can learn the pattern.”

Spend an attempt defending only. Stay alive long enough to identify the opener, the delayed attack, and the end of the combo. Increase health or healing capacity if the game allows it, and use a summon or companion to create observation time.

“My attacks never reach the enemy safely.”

Use a longer weapon, a gap-closing skill, a ranged option, or a punish from a different angle. If none fits, leave and look for equipment that changes your range or damage plan. Do not keep adding the same short attack to an opening that is too small.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Blocking makes me collapse, but dodging is inconsistent.”

Check the stamina cost and guard properties of the shield. Block only the first hit, then reposition; or practice dodging one named attack rather than the entire combo. A hybrid plan is often easier than forcing a complete switch from block to dodge.

“The camera is the real boss.”

Move away from walls, adjust camera sensitivity, test target lock on and off, and fight from a range where the enemy remains visible. Against very large enemies, unlock if the camera constantly points at the wrong body part, then use a deliberate manual angle.

“I am spending all my resources before the important phase.”

Reserve stamina for defense, FP for the skill that solves your hardest phase, and consumables for a known vulnerability. Shorten ordinary attack strings and stop chasing damage after a safe punish. Resource discipline often changes the fight more than a small damage increase.

A repeatable practice routine

Use this routine whenever a boss or elite enemy feels impossible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare: choose equipment you can control, confirm healing and item inputs, and enter with a clear resource plan.
  2. Observe: spend one attempt identifying the opener, the attack you can punish, and the attack that catches your current dodge.
  3. Stabilize: select one defense and one backup; stop changing both every attempt.
  4. Exploit: practice the safest punish until it is consistent, then add a second punish.
  5. Adapt: change one weapon, skill, position, or support option if the same failure repeats.
  6. Decide: continue when each attempt teaches something, or leave to explore and strengthen the character when the game permits it.

The aim is not a flawless run. It is to make the fight’s decisions legible, then execute them under pressure. That is how assistance lowers frustration without erasing the challenge that makes a Soulslike rewarding.

Sources and scope

The Elden Ring-specific mechanics and options described here come from Bandai Namco Europe’s “ELDEN RING Starter Guide: Tips to know before playing the game” (October 11, 2021) and its discussion of the game’s challenge and progression options. The guide covers PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One; button instructions may require platform-specific adaptation.

The design-intent quotation comes from the PlayStation.Blog interview with FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki: “We don’t want players to feel like the game is unfairly punishing, but rather that there’s a chance to win a difficult encounter and make progress.” It describes his view of the design, not a measured success rate or promise of an identical experience for every player.

Accessibility guidance is based on Steamworks’ accessibility feature documentation and Microsoft Learn’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108. The comparison of granular assistance uses Electronic Arts’ “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Accessibility Resources.” Settings can vary by platform, edition, language, and updates, so verify the menus in your copy.
