To make short AI videos feel more consistent, treat each generation as one directed shot: choose text-to-video for a scene you can describe, or image-to-video when a supplied image should anchor the look. Keep the prompt focused on one action and the intended camera behavior, use compatible references, and refine one detail at a time. References and careful editing can improve continuity, but they cannot guarantee identical results.
Choose text-to-video or image-to-video
Start by deciding what should control the shot: your written description or an existing image.
- Text-to-video: Describe the scene from scratch. It suits flexible shots such as B-roll and backgrounds, especially when you do not need exact continuity with a specific starting image. Runway says text-to-video can be more effective for complex motion sequences because it is not constrained to a particular starting scene. Runway’s text-to-video prompting guide
- Image-to-video: Supply an image when composition, subject, lighting, or style should begin from a defined visual. Use the prompt mainly to describe how the image should move, rather than repeating every visible detail. Runway’s image-to-video guide
If the same character or product must recur, image-to-video gives you a stronger visual anchor than a text description alone. It is still a reference, not a promise that every generated frame will match.
Write a prompt for one shot
Build the prompt around what the viewer sees and how it changes. A practical starting pattern is:

[subject and setting, if needed] + [one subject action] + [environmental motion, if relevant] + [camera movement or locked camera] + [style or lighting, only if important]
For text-to-video
Name the subject and setting, then describe one clear action. Add relevant environmental motion, framing, lighting, and style. For example: “A red paper kite rises above a quiet beach at sunset; wind ripples the water; wide shot, camera slowly tracks upward; soft natural light.” The example is a prompt pattern, not a guarantee of a particular result.
For image-to-video
Let the input image establish what the subject looks like and where it is. Direct the motion instead: “The person turns their head toward the window as the curtain moves gently; locked camera.” If the framing should stay steady, say so positively—such as “locked camera”—and specify the motion that is allowed.

Keep the wording direct and positive. Runway’s Gen-4 guidance warns that negative phrasing can produce unpredictable or opposite results. Its prompt guides also recommend adding one element at a time, so you can judge which change improved the shot. Runway’s Gen-4 prompting guide
Keep the action plausible for the clip duration
A short generation has limited time to establish and complete an action. Avoid stacking unrelated scene changes into one prompt; a subject walking, changing outfits, entering a new location, and performing a second action may be better handled as separate shots.
Runway’s Gen-4 guide describes 5- and 10-second clips for that model. Those durations are model-specific, not general limits for AI video tools. Check the selected model’s current duration options and make sure the action fits the clip. Runway’s image-to-video guide advises that a complex sequence may need a longer duration; an unwanted cut can be a sign that the sequence does not fit the selected length. Use references to reduce visual drift
For recurring characters, products, or a recognizable visual style, prepare a clear source image with the subject visible and consistently framed. Runway’s reference-media guidance recommends clear, well-lit face references. For a broader style, use a few complementary references that share a palette, lighting, and mood rather than combining conflicting aesthetics. Runway’s reference media guidelines

Choose a more neutral image or remove conflicting cues where possible. Keep style wording stable across shots, and generate one scene at a time. These practices can help communicate continuity, but character identity and style can still drift between outputs.

- Generate the simplest version. Start with the main subject action and camera behavior. For image-to-video, avoid adding visual details already clear in the image.
- Identify the specific miss. Decide whether the problem is the action, camera motion, lighting, or another element.
- Change only that element. If the camera moves when it should not, clarify the desired camera behavior; if the action is muddled, simplify it.
- Regenerate and compare. Keep the parts that work and adjust the next detail only after seeing the new output.
Generation is variable, so iteration improves the odds of getting a usable shot; it does not ensure a particular result. A long prompt that produces muddled motion is usually a cue to reduce the request to the core action and camera direction.

Build a longer sequence from short clips
Plan each generation as a separate scene. To carry a shot forward, Runway’s image-to-video guide describes using the previous generation’s final frame as the image input for the next one. The shared frame may appear twice when clips are joined, so remove the repeated frame in an editor. Runway’s image-to-video guide
For a steadier result, describe a locked-off camera where appropriate. If the footage still wobbles, stabilization in an editor may help, though it cannot correct every generation artifact. Review the join for abrupt changes in subject position, lighting, or style before treating the sequence as continuous.
Check rights and permission before publishing
Runway states that, as between the user and Runway, users retain ownership and rights to content uploaded to and generated on its service, and may use outputs in contexts such as monetized short-form video and product advertising; it says formal Runway attribution is not required. That vendor statement does not settle rights in third-party inputs, other legal obligations, local rules, or platform policies. Review the service’s current terms for your use case.
