To make room for PS5 Pro games, first check Settings > Storage, then choose between deleting games you can download again, removing optional game data, archiving games to USB, or adding a compatible M.2 SSD. USB storage can hold PS5 games but cannot run them; an M.2 SSD can keep PS5 games playable directly from added storage.
Sony’s storage guidance covers PS5 consoles generally. Its M.2 installation guide includes a CFI-2000/7000 model group, but you should still check the diagrams and compatibility requirements for your exact console before buying or installing a drive. Sony’s published material does not establish a typical PS5 Pro game size or how much space every player needs.
Check what is using storage before deleting anything
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. The console separates usage into categories such as games, media, and saved data. Looking at the breakdown first helps you target the actual source of the problem rather than deleting a game when another category is taking up the space.
Game installations are often the most obvious place to reclaim room, but the categories represent different kinds of content. In particular, saved data and installed game data are not interchangeable: moving or deleting an installation is not the same thing as managing a save. Sony lists PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saved data, and says a Plus membership is required for that cloud-storage feature. Cloud saves do not remove the storage used by installed games.

Use the storage screen to choose your next step
- If games and apps account for the space you need, review Console Storage > Games and Apps for games to delete, optional content to remove, or installations to archive.
- If you want to keep an installed PS5 game but do not need it immediately, USB extended storage can serve as an archive. The game must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before you can play it.
- If you want a larger library of PS5 games available to launch without copying them back and forth, consider a compatible M.2 SSD.
Sony’s official storage-management guidance says deleting a game or application does not remove access to a purchase: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any games or applications that you delete — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.” Deleting is therefore an option when you are willing to download or install the game again later.
Choose the storage option that fits how you play
The key distinction is whether you need to keep a game or play it directly from the added storage. Deletion frees space without buying hardware, USB is useful for keeping less-used games on hand, and M.2 expansion is the direct-play option for PS5 games.

Delete a game if you can get it back when needed
Deletion is the simplest choice when you want free space without purchasing storage and do not mind reinstalling a game later. Use the storage screen to identify an installation to remove, then download a purchased game again from your game library when you want it back. The purchase remains available even though its installed files are gone.

Customize content when a game offers it
Some games show a Customize option beside their entry in Console Storage > Games and Apps. Use it to review whether portions you no longer need, such as optional add-ons, can be removed individually. This can preserve the parts you still use, but it is game-dependent: if Customize is not shown, this selective-removal route is not available for that title through this option.
Use USB for games you want to keep but rarely play
USB extended storage is best thought of as an archive for PS5 installations rather than extra space from which PS5 games launch. You can keep an installed PS5 game there, but you must copy it back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play it. That makes USB practical for a game you want to retain without downloading again, but a poor fit for a title you switch into frequently if the copy-back delay is inconvenient.
PS4 games are different: Sony says they can be played directly from USB extended storage. A compatible SuperSpeed USB external drive is the relevant type of device for this use. The official storage guidance establishes the play-versus-archive distinction, but it does not compare current drive prices or the performance of individual external drives.

Add an M.2 SSD for a larger active PS5 library
A compatible M.2 SSD is the option to consider when you want added storage from which PS5 games can be played directly. Sony says M.2 storage can hold, download, and play PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. It is more involved than deleting or archiving because the drive has to meet the console’s requirements, have an effective cooling structure, and be installed according to the instructions for the particular console model.
How to free space or expand it
Free space using the console’s storage controls
- From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Storage and inspect the categories to see where space is being used.
- Open Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed games and apps.
- Delete games you are willing to download or install again. Sony says deleting a purchase does not remove it from your game library.
- If a game has a Customize option, inspect its selectable content and remove only the portions you no longer need.
- If you want to retain a PS5 installation but do not need it playable right now, move it to USB extended storage. Plan to copy it back to console or M.2 storage before launching it later.
These choices solve different problems. Deleting reduces the installed library and requires a later download or installation; USB preserves the PS5 game’s stored installation but does not make it launchable from that drive; customizing can reduce a supported game’s installation without removing every part of it.
Prepare an M.2 SSD for direct play
- Check the exact PS5 model and consult the corresponding Sony M.2 installation instructions and diagrams before purchase or installation. The PS5 support material is general, and the installation guide includes a CFI-2000/7000 model group.
- Confirm the drive’s interface, capacity, form factor, total dimensions with its cooling structure, and cooling design against Sony’s requirements below. Do not rely on a product title alone; check the actual specifications.
- Install the drive using the model-specific instructions. Sony requires an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet.
- When prompted, format the M.2 SSD. Sony says the entire M.2 SSD must be formatted, so do not treat an already-used drive as though its existing contents will be preserved.
- After setup, use the M.2 storage for compatible game and app installations. If a game has problems when run from M.2 storage, Sony’s troubleshooting advice includes moving it to console storage.
The instructions above describe the decision and preparation points established in Sony’s guidance; they are not a substitute for its model-specific physical installation diagrams. Follow those diagrams for the exact console rather than assuming every PS5 model is opened or assembled in the same way.

M.2 SSD requirements to check before buying
Sony’s M.2 compatibility guidance gives a capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB. Its storage overview also states a maximum M.2 expansion capacity of up to 8 TB. The support pages do not state publication dates for these figures; the guidance was current as accessed on October 13, 2026.

Matching these headline numbers does not guarantee that a third-party drive will work. Sony explicitly says it cannot guarantee every drive that appears to meet the listed specifications, and performance may not match the internal SSD in every game. A drive’s heatsink can also change its width and thickness, so a bare-drive specification is not enough to establish that the finished assembly will fit.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
Expecting PS5 games to launch from USB
A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage has to be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before it can be played. If you want to play a PS5 game directly from added storage, use a compatible M.2 SSD. USB extended storage can run PS4 games directly.

Assuming deletion erases a digital purchase
Deleting installed game files is not the same as removing ownership of a purchased game. Sony says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from the game library. The practical cost of deletion is the need to download or install the game again when you want it, not losing the purchase.
Buying by capacity or speed alone
An M.2 SSD can meet the capacity and read-speed guidance and still be an unsuitable choice if it uses an unsupported interface or its cooling structure exceeds the dimensions. Check the full specification, including the installed heatsink, and consult the model-specific Sony instructions. Sony’s 5,500 MB/s figure is recommended sequential read speed; it is not a universal performance guarantee.
Assuming a cloud save replaces an installed game
Saved data and game installation data serve different purposes. Sony’s guide identifies PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saved data and requires a Plus membership for that feature, but a cloud save does not free the space used by the installed game itself. For game-installation space, use the deletion, customization, USB archive, or M.2 options instead.

The Customize control is available only when a game presents it. If it does not appear, you cannot assume that the game supports removing individual content portions through that menu. Use another storage option rather than searching for a setting that is not offered for that title.
Make the choice based on access, not just capacity
- Choose deletion when you want to avoid buying hardware and can tolerate downloading or installing the game again.
- Choose customization when the game offers it and you can identify optional portions that are no longer needed.
- Choose USB extended storage when you want to retain PS5 installations for later but accept copying them back before play, or when you want to play PS4 games from the external drive.
- Choose M.2 expansion when the goal is to keep more PS5 games directly playable, and you are prepared to verify compatibility, cooling, dimensions, and model-specific installation steps.
Sony’s published material does not establish a typical game size, average PS5 Pro storage demand, or a universal amount of extra capacity to buy. Make the decision from the storage breakdown on your console and how often you want each game ready to launch, rather than assuming one capacity suits everyone.
