AI does not make programming enjoyable or meaningless for everyone. It changes which parts of the work people do themselves: some developers welcome spending less time on routine tasks, while others miss the hands-on problem-solving. If programming has started to feel less satisfying, the useful question is not whether you should use AI, but which parts of programming you want to keep doing—and which parts you are comfortable delegating.
Why AI can change how programming feels
Programming is both a way to produce working software and a process of exploring, making decisions, and solving problems. AI can shift the balance between those parts. When it handles routine code or supplies a quick answer, you may get to an outcome faster but spend less time in the process you enjoyed.
That trade-off is not universal. Microsoft Research’s 2025 study of more than 500 developers, which included interviews and observational studies, found perceived productivity and satisfaction benefits, particularly for routine work. It also reported variation by task complexity, individual use, and team adoption. The findings describe a range of experiences, not a guaranteed effect for every programmer. Microsoft Research’s developer study offers context for why the same tools can feel helpful on one task and disruptive on another.
Anthropic’s 2025 internal study also captured both sides: some engineers focused on what they could accomplish, while others missed parts of coding by hand. One anonymous engineer put the distinction this way: “I thought that I really enjoyed writing code, and instead I actually just enjoy what I get out of writing code.” The study involved 132 Anthropic engineers and researchers surveyed and 53 in-depth interviews, so it is useful for understanding possible experiences, not for estimating how common they are across the industry. Anthropic’s account of its internal study also reports self-assessed productivity, which the company cautions is difficult to measure precisely.

What developers use AI for—and what they worry about
In the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026, common reported uses included generating code in a familiar area, debugging or refactoring, answering technical questions, and writing or improving tests. These are tasks where a developer can often inspect the suggestion and decide whether it fits.
The same survey found that 17.1% selected concern about losing job skills or training AI to replace them as a reason to avoid AI at work or school. That is a reported concern, not evidence that using AI inevitably weakens skills. The survey is a snapshot of responses, not a causal study of what happens to a person’s ability over time. Broader findings should be read in their own context. Google’s DORA 2025 research surveyed nearly 5,000 technology professionals and collected more than 100 hours of qualitative data. It describes AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions; that is the report’s summary, not a universal law about every team. DORA’s 2025 report focuses on organizations and software delivery, rather than individual enjoyment.

Google and Ipsos’ 2026 Our Life with AI survey covered 21 countries and 21,000 participants; Google reported that 74% of AI users said they used it to learn something new or understand a complex topic. That makes learning a credible reason people turn to AI in general, but it does not establish that AI improves programming education. Google’s summary of the survey is about AI use broadly, not programming-specific learning outcomes.
Choose which parts of programming to keep hands-on
There is no proven routine that restores enjoyment for everyone. Instead, decide how you want AI to fit each task. These questions turn broad unease into choices you can make in a project:
- How much practice do you want? If you are learning a concept or want to sharpen a skill, try the implementation yourself before asking for help. If the task is repetitive and familiar, delegating more may suit you.
- Will AI help you understand the code? Ask for an explanation, possible causes of a bug, or test ideas—not only a finished solution. Then verify that you can explain the result in your own words.
- Can you check the output? Keep responsibility for reviewing generated code, running tests, and checking edge cases. If you cannot assess a suggestion yet, treat it as a prompt to learn rather than as a ready-to-use answer.
- Do you find the task interesting? Reserve some work for yourself when the investigation, design, or act of coding is part of what you value. Hand off work you would rather not spend time on.
These are practical decision questions, not a tested framework. Their purpose is to preserve agency: you can choose differently for a learning exercise, a routine fix, and an important design decision.

Build an AI workflow that still feels like yours
For learning a new concept
Make an attempt before requesting a complete implementation. Ask AI to explain an unfamiliar error, compare two approaches, or suggest a small exercise. Afterward, close the answer and reconstruct the idea yourself. The goal is to make the explanation useful without letting the tool remove the practice you came for.
For debugging or refactoring
Describe the observed behavior and the relevant code, then ask for plausible causes or a minimal change to investigate. Check each suggestion against the program’s actual behavior, and run appropriate tests. If the code works but you cannot explain why, ask for a walkthrough or simplify the change until you can.
For routine or repetitive work
AI may be most welcome where the task is familiar, low in personal interest, or easy for you to verify. You can delegate a first draft or repetitive transformation, then focus your attention on review and the parts that require judgment. Microsoft Research’s findings suggest routine work can be a place where developers perceive benefits, while also cautioning that results vary with task and use.

For work you love doing yourself
Keep the keyboard time. You do not need to hand off a task just because AI can attempt it. Anthropic’s internal interviews describe engineers drawing different boundaries based on what they found exciting and how readily they could verify the result. A personally meaningful task can be worth doing directly even when delegation might be faster.

AI can be convenient for questions, but programming also involves sharing context, discussing trade-offs, and learning how other people approach a problem. Microsoft Research found less evidence of an effect on collaboration in its developer study; Anthropic interviewees, in a separate internal study, described some questions to colleagues shifting to AI. These observations cover different populations and methods, and do not establish one general effect on teamwork.

How to tell whether your approach is working
Try changing one kind of task at a time and notice what changes for you. After a project or learning session, ask yourself:
- Did I understand the code I kept or accepted?
- Did I get enough hands-on practice for what I wanted to learn?
- Did AI reduce tedious work, or did it take over the part I found engaging?
- Did I still have useful conversations with other people involved in the work?
Use your answers to adjust the boundary between direct work and delegation. Studies of adoption and reported experience do not establish a universal way to restore enjoyment, and no particular AI technique can promise that result. Programming should still leave room for the kinds of work that make it worthwhile to you.
