To unlock Mutton as a base cat in Mortal Shell II, complete Vlas’s quest: meet him in the Outskirts of Mammon, advance his scenes, rescue him from Lonesome Spire with the Unremarkable Key, then follow the quest to its reported reunion at Marrow Keep. Before freeing him, visit the nearby Brigand and check his stock; guides warn that the shop is no longer available after the rescue.
Start Vlas’s quest in the Outskirts of Mammon
Look for Vlas near the Road to Absolution and the wreckage in the Outskirts of Mammon. Speak with him, then inspect the nearby wreckage and empty cat cage as prompted. This opening scene starts the quest; Mutton is not unlocked by finding a cat elsewhere in the world.
To advance Vlas’s sequence, exhaust his dialogue, rest at a Beacon, and return to him. The walkthroughs agree that the quest progresses through return visits, but they do not establish a universal number of rests or a single guaranteed trigger schedule.

At a later stage, Vlas is imprisoned at a camp in Lonesome Spire, with a Brigand nearby. Check the Brigand’s stock before changing the rescue state: walkthroughs warn that this shop becomes unavailable once Vlas is freed. Buy anything you want from the stock before proceeding.

Find the Unremarkable Key in the upper camp
The Unremarkable Key is used in the Lonesome Spire rescue sequence. Guides place it in a nearby shack or hut in the upper camp, accessible by breaking through a wall. Descriptions of the precise hut and its position vary, so search the breakable-wall shack in that camp rather than relying on a specific compass direction.
Use the key, then follow Vlas’s next quest stages
Return to Vlas and use the key as part of the rescue. The remaining sequence includes further dialogue and location changes. Walkthroughs report a letter at the original Outskirts location and a later reunion at Marrow Keep, but differ on the exact timing and landmark for these events. Revisit the earlier location and check for new dialogue as the quest advances.
If Vlas’s next scene does not appear
- Speak with Vlas until his dialogue is exhausted.
- Rest at a Beacon.
- Return to the location where you last encountered him and check again for dialogue or a new scene.
These are troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fixed sequence; published walkthroughs do not agree on every transition trigger.
Finish the quest at Marrow Keep to unlock Mutton
Continue following the quest’s dialogue and location states until Vlas and Mutton appear at Marrow Keep. Their reported arrival there is the point at which Mutton becomes your base cat.
