I spent $20 on an old Blu-ray player, and it changed how I think about watching movies. Instead of scrolling through a library of titles, I could pick a disc, put it on, and give one film my attention. The price is part of my story, not a guide to what used players generally cost; the appeal was rediscovering a more deliberate way to watch.

Why I wanted to try physical media again

Streaming makes it easy to browse, but that ease can turn choosing a movie into its own activity. I wanted to see what would happen if watching began with a specific disc rather than an open-ended menu. The old player gave me a simple way to try that without making the experiment feel like a major commitment.

A disc also makes the choice tangible: you pick a title, load it, and settle in. For me, that small bit of intention helped movie night feel like an event again. The pleasure was not that physical media is automatically better for everyone; it was that a different format changed the rhythm of watching.

What the experience changed—and what it didn’t

Using a player brought back the satisfying ritual of choosing a movie and watching it as a movie, rather than treating a screen full of options as the main attraction. It gave me a reason to revisit films I already owned and to be more present with the one I had selected.

That does not make discs the right choice for every situation. Streaming is convenient, and a disc player requires compatible equipment and a physical copy of the film. But if browsing has become more appealing than watching, a shelf of movies you already care about can offer a useful counterweight.

Can an old Blu-ray player still play your discs?

Often, but compatibility depends on the exact player and disc. Sony’s US support guidance lists Blu-ray movie formats including BD-ROM, BD-ROM 3D, BD-R and BD-RE, alongside several DVD formats and CD-R/CD-RW music playback. Some BD-XL support is limited to models from 2011 onward, and Sony advises checking the manual for supported file types. A Blu-ray player should not be assumed to play every disc or digital file (Sony’s disc compatibility guide).

How to connect a Blu-ray player to a TV

When both devices have HDMI ports, HDMI is a straightforward connection; Sony recommends it for optimum picture quality. However, available terminals vary by model and region, so an older player may not have the connection you expect. Check the player and TV ports before buying, and consult the player’s manual for the right output and any settings to change (Sony’s connection guide; Panasonic’s DMP-BDT270 / DMP-BD903 / DMP-BD93 manual).

If you also use an audio system, the wiring and output settings may differ from a direct player-to-TV connection. Panasonic’s guide to connecting a Blu-ray player or system to an external device shows why it is worth checking the instructions for your specific equipment rather than assuming one setup works for all (Panasonic’s external-device connection guide).

Will a Blu-ray player play DVDs and CDs?

Many models support DVDs and some CDs, but the supported formats differ. Sony’s US list includes DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R and DVD-RAM movie playback, as well as CD-R and CD-RW music playback. It also notes limitations for CD-ROM and Super Audio CD. Check the manual for the exact model and the type of disc you want to use; do not infer support for every DVD, CD or file format from Blu-ray playback alone (Sony’s supported-disc list).

Do Blu-ray discs have region codes?

Yes. Blu-ray discs use lettered region codes, and a player generally supports discs from its own region unless the model specifies otherwise. If you have an imported disc, confirm that it matches the region compatibility of the player. Sony’s UK support page outlines the limitation, but your exact player and disc are the practical checks to make (Sony UK’s region-code guidance).

What to check before buying a used player

Assess the individual unit rather than treating its age or price as proof of value. A quick check before purchase can help prevent the most common compatibility surprises:

  • Identify the exact model. Use its manual or manufacturer support page to confirm disc types and file compatibility.
  • Match the player to your discs. Check the region for imported Blu-rays and verify support for the formats you plan to watch.
  • Check the TV connection. Confirm that the player’s available outputs work with your television; HDMI is useful only when both have a compatible port.
  • Check the remote and basic operation. If possible, confirm that the unit powers on, opens and closes its tray, responds to controls, and attempts to play a disc. These are practical checks of that particular used item, not guarantees about its condition.

My $20 purchase made physical media feel worth revisiting, but it was one personal experience—not evidence of a typical used-player price or a promise that every old unit will work. The useful question is whether a specific player can connect to your setup and play the discs you want to watch.
