The most dependable way to build a large fortune in GTA 5 Story Mode is to invest in stocks affected by Lester’s assassination missions. Complete The Hotel Assassination when the story requires it, but save the other four Lester assassination missions until after the main story and final heist payout. Then you can invest a much larger bankroll for each character. The trades are tied to story events, not guaranteed fixed returns, so save before investing and watch your in-game portfolio rather than relying on an old guide’s percentage targets.

Why Lester’s assassination missions are the best-supported fast-money method

Lester’s assassination missions trigger specific movements in the in-game stock market. Buying the affected company’s shares at the right point can turn mission progression into a much larger return than ordinary, speculative trading. The key is not to rush through every assassination as soon as it appears: four of the five can wait until you have completed the main story and collected the final heist payout.

The Hotel Assassination is the exception. It is required to advance the story, so complete it when prompted. The other four can be held back to let Michael, Franklin, and Trevor accumulate more cash before investing. This is a timing strategy: it does not change which stocks are associated with the missions, but it gives you more starting money to put into those trades.

This is the best-supported choice if your priority is maximizing a later investment, not necessarily earning the largest possible amount at the earliest point in the campaign. Doing an optional assassination sooner lets you use the trade earlier, but you will have less cash available to invest. There is no need to rush those four missions for this strategy; hold them until the final heist payout has arrived, then treat each one as a separate market opportunity.

All five assassinations eventually count toward 100% completion. Delaying four is therefore useful for managing your bankroll, not a way to skip them permanently. A replayed mission does not apply its stock-market effects to the persistent campaign save, so a missed trade generally requires returning to a suitable earlier save or starting another playthrough.

Set up your saves and investments first

  1. Create a manual save before buying shares. Keep it in a separate slot so you can return to the pre-investment state if a trade goes wrong.
  2. Make another safe save before starting each assassination. This gives you a recovery point around the mission as well as before the purchase.
  3. Invest separately with all three protagonists. Michael, Franklin, and Trevor have separate cash balances and portfolios. Switch characters and make the intended trade for each one; a purchase made with one character does not invest the others’ money.
  4. Check which exchange lists the stock. The Lester trades use either LCN or BAWSAQ. Do not substitute a similarly named company on the other exchange.
  5. Advance in-game time and monitor each portfolio. Check the return for the character who owns the shares. Sell when the return stops rising rather than treating a fixed percentage from an older guide as a guaranteed target.

Think of the two saves as separate safety points, not as a reason to keep overwriting your only fallback. The pre-purchase save protects the investment decision; the pre-mission save preserves the state before the story event changes the market. If you are uncertain whether an exchange is working or whether you have selected the right symbol, pause and verify before moving the mission forward.

The three portfolios also make this a character-by-character routine. After switching characters, confirm that character’s cash is being used for the intended purchase and later check that character’s holdings. Do not assume one protagonist’s sale closes another protagonist’s position. If you are investing with all three, repeat the purchase and monitoring steps for each rather than treating the group as a shared account.

Which stocks to buy for each Lester assassination

Use the timing in the table as the trade sequence, not as a promise of a particular return. The stock symbols and exchanges below are the ones associated with the missions; BAWSAQ availability depends on Rockstar services, while LCN’s relevant movements are mainly driven by events in the local save.

Mission Before the mission After the mission Timing note
The Hotel Assassination Buy Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET) on BAWSAQ. After BET’s rise, Bilkinton Research (BIL) on LCN is a recovery opportunity once its price falls. Story-required; do it when progression demands it.
The Multi Target Assassination Buy Debonaire (DEB) on LCN. After selling the rise in DEB, Redwood Cigarettes (RWC) on LCN is a recovery opportunity after its decline. One of the four assassinations to delay until after the main story and final heist payout.
The Vice Assassination Buy Fruit (FRT) on BAWSAQ. Facade (FAC) on BAWSAQ is a recovery opportunity after its price declines. Check BAWSAQ before relying on this trade.
The Bus Assassination Do not buy Vapid (VAP) before the mission. Buy Vapid (VAP) on BAWSAQ after the mission lowers its price, then watch for its recovery. The unusual trade in the sequence: the purchase comes after the mission.
The Construction Assassination Buy GoldCoast (GCD) on LCN. Monitor GoldCoast’s post-mission rise and sell when its return stops increasing. One of the four assassinations to delay until after the main story and final heist payout.

The table includes two different kinds of opportunities. For most of the sequence, the first purchase is made before the assassination and sold after its related rise. The second company listed for Hotel, Multi Target, and Vice is a recovery opportunity: wait for the relevant decline, then buy and follow its recovery. The Bus trade is the exception to the usual pre-mission purchase pattern. That distinction matters more than memorizing a single target percentage.

How to work through the trades without missing the timing

1. Handle The Hotel Assassination when required

Before starting the mission, make the two saves described above and invest in Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET) on BAWSAQ with each character whose cash you want to use. After the mission, advance in-game time and check the relevant portfolios. When BET’s return has stopped rising, sell rather than waiting for an assumed universal peak. Bilkinton Research (BIL) on LCN is a separate recovery opportunity after its price falls; it is not the pre-mission purchase for this assassination.

  • Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
  • Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.

Because this mission cannot be put off if you want to continue the required story progression, it is the one point in the sequence where you may have a smaller bankroll. That is not a reason to skip it or try to force the later trades early. Complete the required opportunity carefully, then preserve the larger remaining opportunities for after the main story.

2. Preserve the other four opportunities

Once The Hotel Assassination is complete, leave the other four Lester assassinations alone while you finish the main story and receive the final heist payout. The larger bankroll is the reason to wait. Do not start one merely because it is available if your aim is to maximize the money invested in its linked stock.

Before each delayed assassination, return to the investment checklist: verify the exchange, make the separate save, switch through the characters you plan to invest with, and buy the stock only at the timing shown below. The missions are distinct opportunities, so finish one trade cycle and check the relevant holding before beginning the next. This makes it easier to notice which character owns each stock and whether a rise or decline is occurring in the correct market.

3. Invest before The Multi Target Assassination

When you are ready to complete this mission, buy Debonaire (DEB) on LCN with each character you intend to use. After the mission, monitor the DEB return and sell when it stops rising. Redwood Cigarettes (RWC), also on LCN, is the subsequent recovery opportunity after its price falls. Treat it as a distinct trade: it comes after the DEB move rather than replacing the initial DEB investment.

4. Invest before The Vice Assassination

Buy Fruit (FRT) on BAWSAQ before beginning the mission. Afterward, track the return in each character’s portfolio and sell when it stops climbing. Facade (FAC), also on BAWSAQ, is the recovery opportunity after the decline. Because both trades depend on BAWSAQ, verify that the exchange is showing current listings before you commit to this mission’s investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Buy Vapid after The Bus Assassination

This mission reverses the usual before-the-mission pattern. Do not buy Vapid (VAP) in advance. Complete the Bus Assassination first, then buy VAP on BAWSAQ after its price has fallen. Monitor the recovery in the portfolio and sell when the return stops rising. Buying before the mission misses the documented timing of this trade.

6. Invest before The Construction Assassination

Buy GoldCoast (GCD) on LCN before starting the mission. Afterward, check the portfolio as time advances and follow the post-mission rise. Sell based on the return you actually see in the save, not a percentage target copied from a different version or market state.

LCN and BAWSAQ: what to check before you trade

The two exchanges are not interchangeable. Several of the assassination-linked companies appear on BAWSAQ, so a trade that depends on that exchange can fail as a practical plan if the service is unavailable or its listings are stale. LCN’s useful movements are mainly tied to story events in the local save and normally do not require online service.

  • For a BAWSAQ trade: open the exchange and confirm it loads current listings before starting the mission investment. If it does not, keep your pre-mission save. You can wait and check again, or proceed without that trade.
  • For an LCN trade: use the LCN listing for the named company and watch its movement after the relevant story event.
  • For either exchange: verify the company name and symbol. A similarly named company on the other exchange is not a substitute for the stock in the sequence.

BAWSAQ is accessed from Story Mode, but it relies on an internet connection and Rockstar services. That is different from LCN’s locally driven story-event movements. If BAWSAQ will not load current listings, do not treat an old price or stale screen as confirmation that the planned purchase is ready. Preserve the save and either wait for service or continue the mission without depending on that particular trade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If BAWSAQ is unavailable, do not assume that a later mission replay will repair the missed opportunity. The mission’s market consequences do not apply to the persistent campaign save when you replay it. Preserve the earlier save if you may want to wait for the exchange to return before proceeding.

How to decide when to sell

There is no single return percentage that can be presented as a guaranteed sell point across editions and market states. Guides and player reports describe different outcomes, and timing affects what a particular save shows. A practical approach is to check the portfolio after advancing in-game time and sell when the return stops increasing. This uses the result in your own campaign instead of assuming a number from another player’s run will repeat exactly.

  • Check the portfolio for the character who owns the shares; the three characters’ balances and holdings are separate.
  • For a pre-mission stock, monitor its rise after the mission before deciding to sell.
  • For a recovery stock, wait until its price has declined before buying, then monitor the recovery.
  • Keep the separate save until you are satisfied with the result, so an unexpectedly poor outcome does not erase your fallback.

Guides may report large outcomes, but those figures depend on the edition, platform, initial bankroll, market state, and when the player sells. A GTA Forum guide posted November 2, 2025, describes its author’s personal PS3 and PC outcomes; that is one player’s report, not a population statistic or a guaranteed current payout. Treat claims of a particular final fortune, including billion-dollar totals, as conditional or anecdotal rather than a promise.

  • Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.

For the same reason, avoid planning around a percentage copied from a guide without checking your own portfolio. A reported peak may come from a different edition, an earlier or later market state, or a player who invested a different amount. The actionable rule is to observe the holding in your save after advancing time and make the sale based on the return actually shown there.

Other ways to make money during the story

Heists, properties, and businesses can also provide Story Mode income, but they depend on progression, purchase decisions, or setup choices. They are useful as part of the wider campaign economy, but they do not replace the delayed Lester investment sequence if your aim is to make the most of a larger post-story bankroll. Keep Story Mode guidance separate from claims about businesses or payouts in GTA Online.

Heist crew costs and property or business income are separate considerations from the stock sequence. Your setup choices and purchases affect what money is available and when; they are not a shortcut that makes the assassination trades unnecessary. If you are deciding between immediate campaign cash and a larger eventual investment, weigh that timing against the goal of this method: preserve the optional assassination-linked trades until the main story has paid out.

Other story events can move stocks, but they are less dependable as a general fast-cash plan than the assassination sequence. Examples documented by GTA BOOM in its September 25, 2013 stock-market guide include Vangelico falling after The Jewel Store Job and recovering later, and FlyUS declining after Legal Trouble and recovering after Meltdown. Those examples describe particular story-event movements; they do not establish guaranteed returns for ordinary trading or for every save.

Ordinary stock picking is a different proposition from a mission-scripted trade. A scripted opportunity has a named story event and a specific associated company and timing; speculative trading does not have that same dependable trigger. If the goal is reliable planning, prioritize the known Lester sequence and treat other market movements as secondary chances rather than an equivalent strategy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Completing all assassinations immediately: this gives you less campaign cash to invest in the four optional missions. Delay those four until after the main story and final heist payout if maximizing the investment base is the priority.
  • Buying Vapid before The Bus Assassination: its documented trade is to buy after the mission lowers the price.
  • Investing with only one protagonist: each character has a separate balance and portfolio, so switch characters and place each trade individually.
  • Using a fixed target from an older guide: exact peaks vary. Watch the return in your save and sell when it stops rising.
  • Assuming BAWSAQ is always available: confirm current listings before relying on a BAWSAQ-dependent trade.
  • Expecting mission replay to recreate a missed trade: replay does not apply the stock effects to the persistent campaign save. Use a suitable earlier save or another playthrough.
  • Mixing Story Mode with GTA Online: the businesses, payouts, and progression in one mode should not be assumed to apply to the other.
  • Confusing the first trade with the recovery trade: sell the initial mission-linked winner before treating the post-decline company as a separate opportunity.
  • Assuming a symbol is available on either exchange: match the company and ticker to the named exchange, especially when switching between BAWSAQ and LCN.

Vandal’s “GTA 5 Stock Market Guide: Lester Stocks & When to Sell,” crawled October 13, 2026, and GameTruth’s “GTA V Story Mode Money: Stocks, Heists and Properties,” updated October 3, 2026, describe the core investment sequence and the distinction between modes and other income sources. GTA BOOM’s older 2013 story-event examples are useful context, but should not be mistaken for guaranteed trading results in every current save.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to make money in GTA 5 Story Mode?

The strongest, most dependable method is to use the stock movements tied to Lester’s assassination missions. Complete The Hotel Assassination when story progression requires it, then save the other four until after the main story and final heist payout so you have a larger bankroll to invest.

Which Lester assassination missions should I delay?

Delay The Multi Target Assassination, The Vice Assassination, The Bus Assassination, and The Construction Assassination until after the main story and final heist payout. The Hotel Assassination is required for story progression and should be completed when prompted.

Do I need to buy stocks with Michael, Franklin, and Trevor separately?

Yes. Each protagonist has a separate cash balance and portfolio. Switch to each character you want to invest with, place that character’s trade, and check that character’s portfolio when monitoring or selling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I buy Vapid for The Bus Assassination?

Buy Vapid (VAP) on BAWSAQ after The Bus Assassination has lowered its price. Do not buy it before the mission; this is the unusual post-mission purchase in the Lester sequence.

What if BAWSAQ is unavailable or its listings look stale?

Verify that BAWSAQ is loading current listings before relying on a BAWSAQ-linked trade. Preserve your pre-mission save, then wait and check again or proceed without the trade. A later mission replay will not apply the stock effect to your persistent campaign save.

Is there a guaranteed percentage at which I should sell?

No fixed percentage is guaranteed across editions, platforms, bankrolls, and market states. Advance in-game time, watch the relevant character’s portfolio, and sell when the return stops rising rather than relying on an old target.

Can I replay an assassination to recover a missed stock opportunity?

No. Mission replay does not apply the stock-market consequences to the persistent campaign save. Recovering a missed scripted opportunity generally requires a suitable earlier save or a new playthrough.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do heists and properties make money too?

Yes. Heists, properties, and businesses can provide Story Mode income, but they depend on campaign progression, setup choices, or purchases. They are separate from the Lester stock strategy and should not be confused with GTA Online businesses or payouts.

The Bottom Line

For the best chance at a large Story Mode fortune, complete The Hotel Assassination when required, save the other four Lester missions until after the final heist payout, and follow each stock’s specific timing. Invest separately with each protagonist, verify BAWSAQ before depending on it, keep safe saves, and sell based on the portfolio return in your own campaign—not a promised percentage.
