Change your operating system’s default browser: Windows uses Settings > Apps > Default apps, macOS uses Desktop & Dock (or General on older releases), iPhone uses Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App, and Android provides the choice in its default-app settings. If links from only one app still open elsewhere, that app may have its own link-opening preference.
What changing the default browser actually does
The default browser is the operating system’s normal destination for web links. When you click an ordinary HTTP or HTTPS link in an email, document, notification, or another application, the system sends it to the browser selected as default.
This setting does not uninstall other browsers, erase bookmarks, or move saved passwords. It changes which installed browser receives links when an application follows the system default. A particular app can still override that behavior, and a work or school administrator may be able to manage the choice.

- Install the browser you want to use before opening the default-browser controls. macOS and iPhone specifically require a browser that is installed and supports the platform’s default-app feature.
- Update the browser if it does not appear in the selection list, then reopen Settings.
- Keep the old browser installed until you have confirmed that links, downloaded files, password prompts, and extensions work as expected in the new one.
- If only one application ignores your choice, test a link from a different application. That separates a system-level default problem from an app-specific preference.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
Set your preferred browser as the default
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Search for the browser you want, or select it from the list of installed apps.
- Choose the browser’s default options for web links. Windows may show separate entries for protocols such as HTTP and HTTPS, and for file types such as .htm and .html; select your preferred browser for each relevant entry.
- Close Settings and click a web link from an email or document to verify the result.
The exact confirmation prompt and screen layout can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but both versions use Settings > Apps > Default apps as the starting point. Microsoft’s Windows guidance also treats individual file-type and link-type associations as part of the default-app configuration.

When only some links open in another browser
Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and inspect the associations for the link or file type that misbehaves. A browser can be the default for HTTPS links while another program remains assigned to an HTML file or a different protocol. Select the unexpected association and choose your preferred browser.
If Windows repeatedly restores a different browser, check whether the computer is managed by an employer, school, or family-safety policy. A policy can restrict changes or reset them after synchronization. On an unmanaged computer, make the association change again, restart the affected application, and test a fresh link.

Mac: macOS Ventura 13 and later
Choose the default web browser
- Install the browser you want to use.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Find Default web browser and choose your preferred browser.
- Click a link in Mail, Messages, Notes, or another application to confirm that it opens in the selected browser.
The browser must be available on the Mac before it can be selected. Changing this control affects normal system links; an individual application may still provide a separate “open links with” choice.
macOS versions before Ventura
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
- Select General.
- Use Default web browser to select the browser you want.
- Close System Preferences and test a link.
Apple places the same function in a different panel on older releases. If the browser is missing from the menu, install it first and reopen System Preferences.

iPhone
Change the Browser App setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default Apps.
- Tap Browser App.
- Select the browser you want to handle web links.
Only a browser that supports Apple’s default-app feature appears as an available choice. If the browser does not appear, update or reinstall it, then check the setting again. After selecting it, test a link from Mail or Messages rather than relying on a link that was already open in another browser.
Android
Set the default browser without relying on one universal menu path
Android device makers customize Settings, and menu names vary by phone model and Android version. Open Settings, look for the area named Default apps or a similar app-management section, then choose the browser category and select your preferred browser. Some phones expose the same control through an app’s information page or a Settings search for “default browser.”

After selecting the browser, open a link from a different app to verify it. If the browser is not listed, install it from the device’s approved app store and return to the default-app control. Google’s Android guidance deliberately notes that the navigation can differ by manufacturer, so a path copied from another model may not match your screen.

A system default is the normal route, not a guarantee that every application must use it. Developers can add an internal preference, and managed accounts can impose a policy. The quickest diagnostic is to compare the same link in two apps: if one follows your choice and the other does not, inspect the second app’s settings before changing the operating-system default again.

Outlook mobile
Microsoft documents a specific control in Outlook mobile. Open Settings > Open Links With, then choose between Edge and the system default. Selecting the system default makes Outlook defer to the browser chosen in iOS or Android. A work or school administrator may manage this option, in which case the control can be unavailable or can revert after synchronization.
Other messaging, mail, and document apps
- Look in the app’s Settings for labels such as Open links with, Use in-app browser, External browser, or Default browser.
- Turn off an in-app browser if you want links to leave the app and use the operating-system default.
- Restart the app after changing its link preference; many apps read the setting only when they launch.
- If a managed account controls the option, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the local setting.
Why links still open in the wrong browser

How to verify the change safely
- Open a harmless public webpage link from the app where you normally click links.
- Confirm that the preferred browser launches rather than an in-app preview, unless the app is intentionally configured to use its own viewer.
- Repeat the test from a second app, such as a notes or messaging app. This reveals whether the operating-system setting works broadly.
- If the second test fails, inspect that app’s link preference before changing system settings again.
- On Windows, test both an HTTPS link and an HTML file if you changed associations individually.
A note about Chrome’s default-browser behavior
Google Chrome Help states: “When you set Chrome as your default browser, links open automatically in Chrome.” That behavior depends on the operating system accepting Chrome as the default and on the app that launches the link not applying its own override. Windows 11 users should still review the relevant file-type and link-type defaults when a particular kind of link behaves differently.
