To make Firefox your default browser on Windows 11, open Firefox, select Menu (☰) > Settings, scroll to Default browser, and choose Make Default. If that button does not complete the change, use Windows 11’s Default apps settings, select Firefox, and assign the required web-link associations, including HTTP and HTTPS.
Firefox must already be installed. Setting it as the default changes which application opens supported links; it does not remove other browsers, and a few Windows Search or taskbar links can still open Edge because they use a Microsoft-specific protocol.
What “default browser” means in Windows 11
The default browser is the application Windows uses when you open a supported web link from another program. Mozilla Support defines it as “the app that opens when you click a link in an email, document, or another application.” This normally includes links opened from email clients, documents, chat applications, and other desktop software.
Windows 11 treats the choice as a set of associations rather than one completely independent switch. The most visible associations are the HTTP and HTTPS link types. Windows can also expose individual file or link types, so Firefox may be the default for some web links while another application remains assigned to a particular association.

Microsoft-specific links used by some Windows surfaces are an exception. Certain results from Windows Search and links launched through taskbar features use a Microsoft protocol that can continue to open Edge even after Firefox is correctly configured as the default browser. That behavior does not necessarily indicate a failed setup.
Before you change the setting
- Install Firefox first. Windows cannot select an application that is not installed.
- Open Firefox once. This makes it easier to find its Settings page and confirms that the installation starts normally.
- Keep both apps available while testing. Changing the default does not uninstall Edge or any other browser.
- Know what you want to test. Use a normal web link from an email, document, or another application. Do not use a Windows-specific Search or taskbar result as your only test, because those may use the Microsoft protocol described above.
Route 1: Set Firefox as the default from Firefox Settings
This is Mozilla’s simplest Windows procedure and should be your first attempt.
- Open Firefox.
- Click the Menu button (☰) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Stay on the General settings page and find the Default browser section. You can use the Settings search box if the section is difficult to locate.
- Select Make Default.
- Close Settings, then open a supported link from another application to verify the result.
When Firefox is already the default browser, the Make Default control is absent. That missing button is normal: it indicates there is no change for Firefox to make.

Firefox asks Windows to assign the common browser associations automatically. Mozilla describes the Windows 11 behavior as applying the most common settings through Set default. This is convenient because you do not have to visit every association individually in the usual case.
If Firefox says the change did not work
A failed one-click attempt does not require reinstalling Firefox. Use the Windows procedure in the next section so you can see and assign the associations directly.

Route 2: Use Windows 11 Default apps
Windows Settings is the manual fallback and gives you more visibility into each association.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Default apps in the search box.
- Select the Default apps Settings result.
- In the list of applications, select Firefox. If Firefox is not listed, confirm that it is installed and that you opened the intended Windows installation.
- Review the associations shown for Firefox. Assign Firefox to the web link types you want it to handle, especially
HTTPandHTTPS. - For each association that still points to another browser, select the current application, choose Firefox, and confirm the Windows prompt if one appears.
- Open a normal link from another application to check the result.
Windows’ layout can change between Windows 11 updates. The labels may appear as an application-based list or as separate file-type and link-type entries, but the underlying task is the same: choose Firefox for the association you want to change.

Neither route establishes a difference in Firefox’s browsing performance or quality. They are two ways to configure the same Windows default-association system.
How to check that Firefox is really the default
- Open an application that contains an ordinary web link, such as an email or document.
- Click a link that begins with
http://orhttps://, or use a link whose destination you can identify. - Confirm that Firefox opens and that the page appears in a Firefox window.
- If another browser opens, return to Default apps, select Firefox, and inspect the association for the link type that was used.
Testing with a standard external link matters. A Windows Search result or a taskbar surface can follow a Microsoft-specific protocol and open Edge independently of the ordinary HTTP and HTTPS assignments.
When only some links still open another browser
Inspect HTTP and HTTPS separately
Windows 11 can expose HTTP and HTTPS as separate link associations. If one opens in Firefox and the other does not, open Start > Default apps, select Firefox, and examine both entries. Assign Firefox to the association that still names another browser.

Check the exact link source
A link opened from an email, document, or another application normally uses the browser association. A link launched by a Windows Search result or a taskbar feature may use Microsoft’s own protocol instead. Compare the two behaviors before changing settings again.

Edge can remain installed and visible after Firefox becomes the default. The presence of Edge in the Start menu, taskbar, or Windows settings is not evidence that Firefox was rejected.
Troubleshooting the most common setup problems
The “Make Default” button is missing
Firefox hides that control when it already considers itself the default browser. Verify with an ordinary link. If the link opens in a different application, use Windows Default apps to inspect the individual associations rather than looking for the button in Firefox.
The button is present but nothing changes
- Open Start and search for Default apps.
- Select Firefox from the application list.
- Review and assign the relevant link types manually, beginning with
HTTPandHTTPS. - Test a link from an email, document, or another application.
This route follows Microsoft’s application-, file-type-, and link-type default controls and avoids relying on a single automatic request.
Firefox does not appear in Default apps
Windows can only select installed applications. Confirm that Firefox launches from the Start menu, then reopen Default apps and search for it again. If it still is not listed, the installation itself may not have completed correctly; reinstall Firefox using Mozilla’s current Windows installer and repeat the procedure.

One association keeps reverting
Return to Firefox’s entry in Default apps and look for the specific association rather than changing the browser at the application level again. Windows may show a separate entry for the link or file type. Assign Firefox to that entry and test the same kind of link.
A Windows Search or taskbar link still opens Edge
This is the documented Windows-specific exception. Some Search and taskbar surfaces use a Microsoft protocol that is not the ordinary HTTP or HTTPS browser association. Firefox can be the default for supported links while those particular surfaces continue to open Edge. Reassigning HTTP and HTTPS will not necessarily change that behavior.
The screen does not match these labels
Firefox and Windows 11 update their interfaces. Look for the same concepts—Firefox’s Default browser section, Windows Default apps, and the individual link-type associations—even if a button is positioned differently or has a slightly different label. Mozilla’s Windows instructions and Microsoft’s Default apps documentation are the authoritative references when an update changes the layout.
What changing the default does—and does not do
- It changes link handling. Supported links sent from other applications are directed to Firefox when Firefox owns the relevant association.
- It can involve several associations. Windows 11 may show HTTP, HTTPS, and other file or link types separately.
- It does not uninstall other browsers. Edge and other installed browsers remain available and can still be opened directly.
- It does not override every Windows surface. Microsoft-specific links from some Search and taskbar features can continue to open Edge.
Changing the default again later
You can return to Start > Default apps at any time, select the browser you want to use, and assign its supported link or file associations. The same screen is also where you can correct a single association without changing every other browser setting. If you choose another browser’s built-in default button, it may request the same Windows association change through its own settings.

Because Firefox and Windows 11 receive interface updates, the exact position of a control can differ from these descriptions. The names Settings, Default browser, Make Default, and Default apps identify the relevant paths.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to uninstall Edge before making Firefox the default browser?
No. Firefox can be the default while Edge remains installed. Changing the default only changes which application handles supported links.
Why does Firefox open normal links but Edge still open Windows Search results?
Some Windows Search and taskbar links use a Microsoft-specific protocol rather than the ordinary HTTP or HTTPS associations. Those links can continue opening Edge even when Firefox is correctly set as the default.
