The reliable way to reduce HTTP requests in WordPress is to remove assets a page does not use, load feature files only where they are needed, cache responses at the browser and server, and measure the result in a network waterfall. Do not automatically merge every CSS and JavaScript file: concatenation can help an HTTP/1.x site, but HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 already multiplex many files and an oversized bundle can make caching and rendering worse.

Use the sequence below: measure first, eliminate unnecessary work, add the right caches, then test again for logged-out and logged-in visitors. The best result is not simply the smallest request count; it is the fewest necessary requests, the least transferred data, and a fast response for both repeat and personalized page views.

What counts as an HTTP request in WordPress?

When a browser opens a WordPress page, it requests the HTML document and then usually requests stylesheets, JavaScript, images, fonts, videos, tracking scripts, iframe content, and sometimes data from remote APIs. A page with 80 network entries may still be faster than a page with 20 entries if the 20 files are large, render-blocking, or served slowly. Conversely, many tiny files can create avoidable connection and scheduling overhead, especially on older HTTP/1.x connections.

Separate two measurements:

  • Requests: how many resources the browser asks for, including redirects, third-party files, and API calls.
  • Transferred bytes and timing: how much data arrives, when critical CSS and JavaScript become available, and whether a resource comes from cache.

A repeat visit may still show a request because the browser validates a cached file and receives a lightweight 304 Not Modified response. That is very different from downloading the full file again.

1. Audit the network waterfall before changing WordPress

Start with evidence from the page you actually want to improve. Open the page in a private browser window, open Developer Tools, select Network, enable the option to preserve the log, reload the page, and wait until late-loading requests finish. Record the request URL, initiator, status, transferred size, resource type, and whether the file is needed for the initial viewport or a later interaction.

  1. Capture a clean logged-out view. Test with an empty browser cache and then with a warm cache. A page cache commonly serves anonymous visitors but bypasses logged-in sessions.
  2. Group requests by initiator. Expand a stylesheet or script to see which plugin, theme file, inline code, or third-party embed caused it.
  3. Mark resources that are not used on this URL. Examples include a form library on pages without a form, a gallery script on ordinary posts, or a commerce widget on informational pages.
  4. Check the response status and cache columns. A 200 response with a large transferred size is different from a cached response with zero bytes or a small validation response.
  5. Repeat for important templates. Check the home page, a post, a page, search results, archive pages, and any custom landing page. An optimization that helps one template may break another.

Use a performance audit as a second view, but keep the waterfall as your source of truth for request ownership and cache behavior. Save a before-and-after record containing total requests, transferred bytes, render-blocking time, and the largest initiators.

2. Remove assets that the page never uses

The highest-confidence reduction is deletion. Review every plugin and theme that adds CSS, JavaScript, fonts, tracking code, or an embed to every page. Disable a feature you do not use, remove duplicate libraries, and replace multiple copies of the same third-party widget with one implementation.

Prefer WordPress’s enqueue system

Registering and loading assets through wp_enqueue_script() and the related enqueue APIs keeps dependencies, loading order, and handles under WordPress control. The Theme Handbook documents this approach and explains that the version argument gives a changed file a new URL for cache busting: WordPress Theme Handbook: Including assets.

A typical theme enqueue can look like this:

add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
    wp_enqueue_script(
        'site-interactions',
        get_theme_file_uri('/js/site-interactions.js'),
        array(),
        '1.4.2',
        true
    );
});

The handle identifies the asset, the dependency array controls ordering, the version changes when the file changes, and the final argument asks WordPress to place the script in the footer where appropriate. The example version is illustrative; use a deliberate version for your own release process.

Find the asset handle and its owner

In the page source and Network panel, identify the file URL, then inspect the theme or plugin code that enqueues it. If you remove an asset with wp_dequeue_style() or wp_dequeue_script(), run the dequeue late enough that the original enqueue has already occurred, and target the exact registered handle. Test the page’s feature afterward: a stylesheet may contain shared layout rules, and a script may be a dependency for several components.

Load feature files conditionally

Move a feature’s enqueue call behind the condition that proves the feature exists. For example, a contact-form stylesheet can load only on the contact template, and a gallery script can load only when a post contains a gallery block. Use the narrowest reliable condition available: a page template, post type, block presence, shortcode, or a setting that enables the feature.

Conditional loading should be decided on the server before HTML is sent. Hiding an element with CSS or waiting for JavaScript to decide whether a library is needed still downloads the library and therefore does not reduce the request count.

Control third-party requests

External fonts, analytics, video players, social widgets, advertising tags, chat tools, and embedded forms can add requests outside your own server. Remove services that no longer serve a measured purpose. Delay a non-critical embed until a user scrolls to it or interacts with it, but make sure the delayed code does not block keyboard access or essential content. A third-party domain can also add DNS, connection, and TLS work, so count those requests separately from your first-party files.

3. Use browser caching so repeat visits do less work

Browser caching does not necessarily remove the first request, but it prevents repeat downloads of unchanged static files. WordPress explains that cache headers can reduce server load and that a browser may validate a cached resource with a lightweight response instead of transferring the complete file again: WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook: Cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For stable CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images, and theme files, configure suitable Cache-Control directives with a meaningful max-age. Expires headers and entity tags such as ETag are also part of the browser-caching toolkit. Your web server, reverse proxy, CDN, or host control panel normally sets these headers; do not add conflicting rules in several layers without checking the final response headers.

Use versioned URLs for changed files

Long-lived caching is safe only when a changed file receives a new URL. WordPress’s enqueue version argument appends a version value to the asset URL, allowing browsers to keep the old file until the new URL appears. Increment the version whenever the file’s contents change, or use a release process that produces a new immutable asset name. Purging a cache without changing the URL can leave some visitors with an older browser-cached copy.

Distinguish a cache hit from a validation request

In Developer Tools, an entry marked as served from memory or disk cache may still appear in the log. A request that returns 304 Not Modified transfers headers but not the full representation. Compare transferred bytes and response timing rather than treating every row as an equally expensive download.

4. Add full-page and server-side caching

A page cache stores generated HTML and serves it to another anonymous visitor without rebuilding the page through the complete PHP and database stack. Static caches and reverse proxies can similarly serve files before PHP is invoked. WordPress’s hosting guidance describes serving static CSS, JavaScript, fonts, and images from static caches, reverse proxies, or CDNs instead of repeatedly invoking PHP and the database: WordPress Hosting Handbook: Performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure cache rules around real users

  • Cache public, anonymous pages with a known freshness period.
  • Exclude administrator screens, checkout or account pages, and any response containing private user data.
  • Decide how cookies affect caching; a broad cookie exclusion can accidentally bypass the cache for every visitor.
  • Define purge triggers for publishing, editing menus, changing widgets, and updating theme or plugin assets.
  • Confirm that logged-in users receive the correct personalized response, even if anonymous visitors receive cached HTML.

Test an anonymous page in a private window, then test while logged in and with any personalization enabled. A page cache can lower origin work dramatically while leaving the browser’s asset requests unchanged, so measure both server response time and front-end requests.

5. Use a CDN or reverse proxy when the architecture fits

A content delivery network can serve images, JavaScript, CSS, fonts, and theme files from locations closer to visitors. A reverse proxy can serve cached HTML and static content before the request reaches PHP or the database. WordPress’s optimization guidance discusses caching and delivery strategies alongside the distinction between older and newer HTTP protocols: WordPress optimization handbook.

Before enabling broad caching, document which URLs are public, which cookies indicate a logged-in or personalized session, and how purges propagate. Check whether a cache respects query strings, authorization headers, and response cookies. Verify that a deployment removes old asset URLs only after the new files are available, and test an invalidation from the browser, the edge cache, and the origin.

A CDN does not automatically reduce the number of resource URLs in a page. Its main benefits are shorter network distance, edge cache hits, and less load on the origin. If the CDN adds a new hostname for every resource or prevents effective reuse of cached files, the waterfall can become more complex rather than faster.

6. Decide whether to combine CSS and JavaScript

Concatenation trades many files for fewer, larger files. On HTTP/1.x, combining several small files can reduce connection and request overhead. On HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, multiplexing allows many streams to share a connection, so aggressive bundling is no longer automatically beneficial. WordPress documents the historical recommendation to combine files for HTTP/1.x and notes that multiplexing in HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 may make the older technique unnecessary: WordPress optimization handbook.

Situation Potentially useful approach Risk to check
HTTP/1.x, many tiny first-party files Combine compatible files into a small number of bundles. A bundle can become render-blocking or invalidate unrelated code when one file changes.
HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, independently cached assets Keep logical files separate when they are small and loaded in parallel. Too many uncompressed or duplicate files can still waste bytes and parsing time.
Critical CSS plus large application JavaScript Separate above-the-fold styles and defer interaction code where safe. Deferring required code can produce broken controls or layout flashes.
Several plugins with conflicting dependencies Resolve duplicate libraries and keep WordPress dependency ordering. Blind merging can change execution order and break plugin features.

Make one bundling change at a time. Compare first view and repeat view, total transferred bytes, cache hit behavior, render-blocking time, and the browser protocol shown in the connection details. A larger bundle can increase the cost of a small edit because every visitor must download the changed bundle again, even when most of its contents are unchanged.

7. Cache repeated outbound API calls

A page that requests the same remote data for every visitor can create an HTTP request from your server for each page view. If the data changes infrequently, store a successful response locally for a defined interval. WordPress’s HTTP API guidance recommends caching API requests and identifies the Transients API as an available built-in option: WordPress Common APIs Handbook: HTTP request performance.

A minimal pattern is:

$data = get_transient('example_remote_data');

if (false === $data) {
    $response = wp_remote_get('https://api.example.test/items', array(
        'timeout' => 5,
    ));

    if (!is_wp_error($response) && 200 === wp_remote_retrieve_response_code($response)) {
        $data = json_decode(wp_remote_retrieve_body($response), true);
        set_transient('example_remote_data', $data, 15 * MINUTE_IN_SECONDS);
    }
}

The endpoint and interval in this example are illustrative. Choose an expiration that matches how quickly the data must change, handle errors without replacing a good cached value with an error, and avoid storing credentials or private responses in a shared transient. If the response varies by user, include the relevant user or request context in the cache key or do not share the value.

8. Compare optimizations with the right metrics

Use a small test matrix rather than a single page-load score.

Metric What it tells you How to interpret a change
First-view request count How much work a cold browser must start. Lower is useful only if required content still arrives correctly.
Repeat-view request count Whether browser and edge caches are being reused. A visible request may be a cheap validation rather than a full download.
Transferred bytes Network cost for the tested visitor and cache state. Often more actionable than the raw count when bundles or images are large.
Cache status and headers Whether the browser, CDN, reverse proxy, or origin served the file. Check Cache-Control, max-age, ETag, and purge behavior.
Render-blocking time How long CSS or early JavaScript delays the first usable view. Fewer requests can still be worse if one merged file blocks rendering.
Protocol Whether the connection uses HTTP/1.x, HTTP/2, or HTTP/3. Use the protocol when deciding whether concatenation is worthwhile.
Compatibility Whether forms, menus, editors, embeds, and plugin features still work. Keep the change only after functional testing on affected templates.

Run tests from more than one geographic location when your audience is distributed, and test with a cold cache and a warm cache. There is no universal percentage or millisecond improvement: results depend on asset weight, cache-hit rate, protocol, geography, hosting, and the number of personalized responses.

9. Troubleshoot common failures

A feature works on one page but not another

The conditional rule is probably too narrow, or the feature is inserted by a block, shortcode, or widget that your condition does not detect. Compare the working and failing pages, identify the missing handle or dependency, and broaden the condition only to the templates that truly need it.

Visitors see old CSS or JavaScript after a deployment

Check the final asset URL and its version value, then inspect browser, CDN, reverse-proxy, and origin caches separately. Change the enqueue version when the file changes and purge the relevant cache layer. Do not solve a single stale file by disabling all long-lived caching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The request count falls but the page becomes slower

Inspect the merged file’s size, compression, parse time, and render-blocking status. Under HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, restore logical splitting if the bundle prevents parallel delivery or invalidates code that did not change.

Logged-in users receive cached or incomplete content

Check cookie and authentication exclusions in the page cache and reverse proxy. Purge the affected URL, test in a logged-in session, and ensure private fragments are generated for the correct user rather than embedded in a public cached document.

An API limit is still reached

Confirm that every code path uses the same transient key, that the transient is written only after a successful response, and that the expiration is long enough for the intended reuse. Add logging around cache misses and remote status codes, but do not expose API credentials in logs or page output.

10. A safe implementation order

  1. Record a baseline waterfall for cold and warm logged-out views, plus a logged-in view for personalized templates.
  2. Remove abandoned plugins, duplicate embeds, unused fonts, and globally loaded feature assets.
  3. Convert remaining theme and plugin files to supported enqueue APIs and assign deliberate version values.
  4. Add conditional loading for features tied to templates, blocks, post types, or visible interactions.
  5. Set browser cache headers for stable static files and verify that changed URLs receive new versions.
  6. Enable full-page caching for public responses, with explicit exclusions for authenticated and personalized pages.
  7. Add a CDN or reverse proxy only after documenting purge, cookie, query-string, and authorization behavior.
  8. Test bundling based on the site’s actual HTTP protocol; keep files separate when multiplexing and cache granularity make that better.
  9. Cache repeated remote API responses with an expiration that matches their freshness requirements.
  10. Re-run the waterfall and functional tests, then keep only changes that improve the relevant metrics without breaking content or interactions.

Which changes usually matter most?

For most WordPress sites, eliminating globally loaded assets and preventing duplicate third-party embeds is the safest first win because it removes work rather than rearranging it. Browser and page caching then reduce repeat transfers and origin processing. Conditional loading is the main technique for large plugin-heavy sites. CDN delivery helps when visitors are far from the origin or static files consume significant bandwidth. Bundling is a protocol-specific experiment, not a default checkbox, and outbound API caching matters when server-side requests repeat the same remote work for many visitors.
